The Christian Response to Grief

  • Grief is a human emotion that affects all of us at different times throughout our lives, but sometimes it can feel overwhelming.
    The Catholic Church, in all her wisdom, offers us this beautiful prayer in the rite of Christian burial:
    "Indeed for your faithful, Lord, life is changed not ended, and when this earthly dwelling turns to dust, an eternal dwelling is made ready for them in heaven."
    Fr. Mike extends hope and encouragement to anyone grieving today. He explains that our grief as Christians should look different in the light of Christ's promise of eternal life.

    The only way I got through losing my Dad was remembering the words spoken to me by a Christian woman taking care of him in the hospital,
    "You have taken care of him the best way you could but you can't do
    anymore for him. God is going to embrace him with love and care for him in ways you can't". I bless that woman every time I think of my father.

      Thank you, this spoke to me - my mother died a month ago. I can now tell myself, "I took care of her as best I could for sixty years, but I couldn't do anything else for her. Jesus has taken her in, has met all of her needs, and loves her perfectly."

    When I was 15, I lost my uncle, who was also my Godfather. At his funeral Mass, I really broke down. I loved that kind, gentle and patient man, and my grief came in a torrent of tears as we left the church. At the entrance of the church, a wonderful priest took me aside and said, "Don't be ashamed of your tears, your grief. There's no greater tribute you can pay to someone, and no greater testament to our Lord of how highly you thought of His child that his passing makes you weep so." I'm almost 60 now, but I've never forgotten those words. Grief is our tribute to the person and our testament to God of a person's reflection of Him here on earth.

    Came across this in the midst of heavily grieving ..my husband leaving...my abortion 14 years ago, this October.❤️💔 😭I was listening to Tears in Heaven "would you know my name, if I saw you in Heaven? ....I must be strong and carry on because I know I don't belong here in heaven." Then, through my tears and snot, this video comes up, "we don't grieve as those who have no hope...if we get to heaven, we get to see them again in heaven.."
    God, have mercy on me. Protect my son. Daniel, please pray for your family on earth. Pray for me, pray for your father.🙏🙏

    Thank you Fr.Mike for your kind words. Today Thursday 14th of September 2023 I will attend the funeral Mass of my buddy Seamie Hickey who died unexpectedly last Monday after a short battle with cancer. Seamie was in his early 50's. He worked hard up to a few months ago as a truck driver. We worked together in the past and became good friends. He leaves behind a beautiful home and a beautiful family.
    Please Fr.Mike pray for the Soul of Seamie and pray for his family at this very sad time.

    I was with my daughter when she died from cancer four years ago. Katie was 40 and a HUGE light in this world.
    Jesus and especially Mother Mary, were right by my side and they are with me now.
    I came away from the experience with three gifts: kindness, gratitude, and acceptance- Blessings through death and grief.
    When we pray “thy will be done”, that is our faith. Gifts follow the grief, always.

    I lost my 16 yr old son , who was very ill, 24 months ago, and needed me all his life.. i thought his illness made me stronger in Christ while he was on this earth, little did I know, that only after Christ called him home, is when I experienced Jesus’s love comfort strength compassion consolation.. he walks with me everyday ..even on bad days , Jesus walks with me, just as he has been ever since I have been entrusted with the care of my son.. I miss you Son.. i know i will see you again. ❤️

    I just cant get over loosing my Mother. I'm riddled with guilt that l didn't treat her as well as l should have and l feel like I let her down badly, especially in her final days, when she needed me most...if it wasn't for the guilt, I think it would be easier to deal with but l can't get passed it. And even though l have hope to see her again, I'm also troubled about what that realty will be like. It will never be the same as in this life..just the simple every day things & opportunities which we take for granted in this life, won't be there anymore, in the next. We won't have the same relationship we had in this life and that saddens me, to be honest. Can souls even hug or embrace each other? I just don't know what to think anymore..I know this sounds silly but l never really believed this would happen, I thought she'd be around forever.. Please pray for me.

      Don't worry; eventually God will comfort you. Isaiah 54 says to you; just reverse the roles; for man... because: the scripture is for a woman with lots of bad luck in life; and she married; but really she is a part of the faulty foundation; a religion that makes women a laughing stock; of the VM; because: if you do not believe in the creation of women as wholesome; then you are laughing at the VM; who gave birth to the savior because: she is a woman.
      Isaiah 54
      you who have never travailed;
      because more are the children of the desolate woman
      than of her who has a husband,”a
      says the LORD.
      2“Enlarge the site of your tent,
      stretch out the curtains of your dwellings,
      do not hold back.
      Lengthen your ropes
      and drive your stakes in deep.b
      3For you will spread out to the right and left;
      your descendants will dispossess the nations
      and inhabit the desolate cities.
      4Do not be afraid, for you will not be put to shame;
      do not be intimidated, for you will not be humiliated.
      For you will forget the shame of your youth
      and will remember no more the reproach of your widowhood.
      5For your husband is your Maker-
      the LORD of Hosts is His name-
      the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer;
      He is called the God of all the earth.
      6For the LORD has called you back,
      like a wife deserted and wounded in spirit,
      like the rejected wife of one’s youth,”
      says your God.
      7“For a brief moment I forsook you,
      but with great compassion I will bring you back.
      8In a surge of anger
      I hid My face from you for a moment,
      but with everlasting kindness I will have compassion on you,”
      says the LORD your Redeemer.
      9“For to Me this is like the days of Noah,c
      when I swore that the waters of Noah
      would never again cover the earth.
      So I have sworn that I will not be angry with you
      or rebuke you.
      10Though the mountains may be removed
      and the hills may be shaken,
      My loving devotion will not depart from you,
      and My covenant of peace will not be broken,”
      says the LORD, who has compassion on you.
      11“O afflicted city, lashed by storms,
      without solace,
      surely I will set your stones in antimony
      and lay your foundations with sapphires.d
      12I will make your pinnacles of rubies,
      your gates of sparkling jewels,
      and all your walls of precious stones.
      13Then all your sons will be taught by the LORD,e
      and great will be their prosperity.
      14In righteousness you will be established,
      far from oppression,
      for you will have no fear.
      Terror will be far removed,
      for it will not come near you.
      15If anyone attacks you, it is not from Me;
      whoever assails you will fall before you.
      16Behold, I have created the craftsman
      who fans the coals into flame
      and forges a weapon fit for its task;
      and I have created the destroyer
      to wreak havoc.
      17No weapon formed against you shall prosper,
      and you will refute every tongue that accuses you.
      This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD,
      and their vindication is from Me,”
      declares the LORD.

    This was perfect for me. A year ago, my ex bf and I broke up so he could pursue a potential call to the priesthood. Though no physical death has occurred, the loss of such an intimate relationship from one moment to the next feels like the death of a loved one to some extent. Hoping to marry this person to then accepting his call and walking away from our life together is heart wrenching. But I now know that my intense grief and pain has been because I have loved much. It brings peace amidst the confusion. I am so grateful I was given the time to love him that much.

    My dad just passed away last December 2, first Saturday of the month, dedicated to Our Lady. I am consoled that Our Lady is with him at the hour of his death.
    It was too sudden, and it is heartbreaking. Heart attack. My mom is very devastated, more devastated than my sisters and me.
    2 masses were celebrated during his funeral. The priests spoke loving words of hope, not unlike Fr. Mike.
    It is incredibly tough because we have so many wonderful memories, and he was the best dad ever. My faith seemed magnanimously increased during his death. I became closer to God and all the drought in my spirit seemed to be showered with trust in God.
    I pray daily for my daddy’s soul (and all souls in purgatory). I told God to turn my grief and my tears into prayers and offered up each suffering for the sake of love, through Our Lady🙏

    My grandpa died less than an hour ago and about 10-15 minutes after I got off the bus stop, he had a heart attack 8 days ago and was luckily already in the hospital getting a check up and if he wasn’t he would have died right then and there. God allowed all of my family cousins, aunts, uncles, and my father who he had guided deeply throughout his life to come and see him. I’m glad God gave me the opportunity to see him and hug him one last time. I am 14 years old and I know that I have been in the period of my life when people I love are going to start dying, but I also know that they will be in heaven with Jesus Christ.
    Rest in Peace and thank you for everything Michael Byrd.

    Thank you Father Mike for this video! As a mother of two, 11 and 9 year olds, and recently I was diagnosed with cancer, this video hit home! This video will be a great way to have my little ones think of how to deal with emotions, in the event of grief, how to continue to have faith and not loose such! That is my greatest fear, that this situation will make them question God. I have been praying to have the right words and examples of faith for them, and this video will definitely help me! I want them to live Jesus regardless of life situations! I know our Lord will heal me, therefor I do not fear cancer, our God is battling this fight for me!

    I say the Rosary of the seven sorrows everyday and think about how Jesus’ mother watched her beloved son suffer before his burial in the tomb.
    Whenever we think about our own grief and sorrow then we think about our Blessed Mother’s pain grief and sorrow watching her beloved son suffer.
    We all have grief and sorrow in our lives and we must think about the sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary 🙏🙏
    God Bless

    My mother passed away last August. As an only child ,I will never be the same without her. Since, then I'm back to church for weekly mass, doing catechism in a year with Father Mike and have never felt closer to God as I do now. When I go to church, I feel close to her, like she's not that far away. That is the power of The Holy Eucharist. Praise God and our Blessed Mother.

    I lost two of the most important men in my life who are not my father. Once when I was 17 years old and it was crushing, I still know the day the date the time when I got the phone call it doesn’t go away it gets easier to take, but it doesn’t go away, it took me a long long time like many decades before I was going to risk it again. And I buried him in July 2015. I don’t have the strength anymore to take risks with that part of my heart. I still love people and people still love me, but that special love is long gone. I just never wanna go through that again.

    “Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.”

    My mom was a good Catholic and stayed married to my dad all those years even though he drank a lot and refused religion. My dad, was almost 90, and on his deathbed my sister asked him if he believed in God. He replied that he believed in science. So of course I feel terrible and pray for him every day, but what could we do ? 🙏🙏

    I loved this message so much. But, it's also a bit heartbreaking for me because my sister - who was so lovely and kind - had become wiccan before she died unexpectedly. She grew up loving Christ but I think just had so much past pain that she turned to what she thought would give her control over herself, her feelings, and her environment. Not digging deeper into her faith and realizing she already had that. She was so misled at the end. I'm sad because I'm not sure I'll ever see her again because of her choice. I don't know if she's in purgatory and prayers can help.

      Pray for her. Offer small inconveniences in your day on her behalf. Have a Mass said for her, if you can. Speak to the Lord of your grief and fear, then pray for her salvation. The Lord exists outside of time. Mary, the Mother of God, was preserved from the stain of original sin by the foreseen (future) merits of Jesus' Passion. It seems possible that the Lord could use your prayers now to aid in her conversion/salvation at the moment of her death back then. That last moment is between the Lord and any one soul. While your love for your sister lives on, let it be joined with hope and whenever her memory comes before you, pray for her.

      Apparently Jesus revealed to St Faustina that when someone dies who’s soul is not in a state of grace (lost), He appears to them and, like with Peter, asks them three times, “Do you love me?”. God’s mercy and love are so much greater than we think! I have great hope for your sister❤️

    I can attest to that statement I was asked by a group of Comtemplative nuns to clear their exceedingly overgrown Abbey cemetary . I was in deep grief for the tragic loss of my parents and as a youngster in my 20s I was very afraid of Death itself. As I was clearing the heavy brambles away from the back wall of the cemetary where all the names of the Sisters who had died were carved into the marble a huge Crucifix became clear to me with the words ´LIFE IS CHANGED, NOT TAKEN AWAY´. This was all the reassurance I needed to go on another day and TRUST in Our Heavenly Father beyond reason. Allelluia! Folks, do not be afraid.

    A deacon once explained that grieving is understandable, however we should not make a false god out of it. Too, in the parable of Lazarus and the rich man, Jesus said Abraham told the rich man there's a chasm that prevents anyone from crossing in either direction. In my opinion that is a wonderful reason to pray for everyone. It's a very sobering thought because it isn't just a thought. We are to learn from everything God taught us, and that parable is one of His lessons.

    It's the pain of being left alone with them gone and never able to see them ever again. Never able to talk to them ever again. Never able to say all the things you long to say to them. You can't because they are gone. Now I have to replace them with the AIR. Because I can't see God. He is there but he like the air. Funny how sometimes the air creeps up on me & I become aware that the air around me feels cold and is blowing on me. Sometimes in the lounge but there is no window. A ghost? God? I like to think it's God trying to comfort me. Then the light turns on and I never turned it on. God turned the light on? Or a ghost? Faith in the air is not easy without bible reading and BIY and all the other videos that help me find God. Then the faith in the air. Is faith that God is the air.
