Invisible Drums - Drumagog's Real-Time Capabilities

  • An invisible drumset was used to demostrate Drumagog's real-time capabilities. Microphones were pointed at both knees, the floor, and a shoulder. Each microphone was connected to an interface, which was connected to a computer running Ableton Live. Each microphone was assigned to a track in Live, with an instance of Drumagog on each track. Each Drumagog had an appropriate sample (kick, snare, hihat, cymbal), and played samples in real-time when the microphone detected each hit.

come on people, drumagog is not built to replace real drums but just to help in the recordings the real drum sound. in fact when you record a drum you wouldn't like the natural sound of the kick-drum and snare (unless you play jazz), so the sound technician puts gates, compressors, limiters and even a trigger to better your sound... not exchange but help (for exemple by adding the trigger to a 30%)... it's used a lot in almost every cd you hear, trust me :) and in live it's rare to find drumagog

      Ahiachebel pretty much:)
But for genres like metal it's more common to just replace the kick or at least use the sample as the primary kick or snare sound.

I think people are misunderstanding the plug-in. Drumming on your knees is not its primary function! Just something you CAN do. It is used in most major recordings now - A real kit is recorded, then sampled sounds are blended with, or completely replace recorded hits. Used A LOT in metal.

If they had this 20 years ago, I could have just got some mics for my cardboard box setup and been ready to record my own drums. Instead, I bought a guitar and collaborated with a drummer and never did my own. I learned to program all kinds of MIDI drums, but you can get more done if you have the ability to play them like this. Some people use this just to fix the sounds they don't like on their Roland drums. I'm not sure which ones, but I hear a lot of people hate the cymbols.

If someone doesn't already do this, I would pay good money to see a live band where the drummer just triggers samples by hitting himself next to various mics!

You can patch this in to Additive Drums...

Yeah I agree with hartistry1957. I think this is a bit overshooting. There are better ways to play "silently". For example these walls you put over ur kit, sorry my english doesn't know a word for that, but u know what I mean. And when I compare normal drum kit and electric kit I think for a start that normal is 10x better looking and I believe it's better in use too

agreed. and triggers are cheaper than mics!

@joe39363 Of course most of people would prefer a $6000 drumkit but if you have no money this is a good solution

@joe39363 I agree with your comments but also technology can allow you to be extremely creative in ways you could never do before using technology, for instance I can have a full orchestra, grand piano, in my own house. It`s all progress in evolution, people still play real instruments and will do so, I agree that music in the top 40 is getting silly these days with the way it sounds. I do prefer gold old fashioned song writing with real instruments at heart. These are more tools & toys.

@joe39363 something like 85% of music created has a heavy importance on computers. hell you wouldnt even be able to record without them

@joe39363 lol... I don't think anybody would find this a better alternative to playing real instruments... Drumagog as a replacement tool is pretty darn useful though

Pretty soon all musicians will just have to stand on a stage
trigger instruments with our minds. Or better yet, the audience can watch a holographic, imaginary band created by the audience themselves in real-time. Even better, give everyone
    electric KoolAid before the show!:)

@joe39363 , yeah, truth is that this software is very interesting to me, i'm a guitarrist, and it takes me a lot of time to make midi sequences with other softs, so, and i don't have enough money, space and hability to play real drums, so, it's practical to me to work alone in studio. but obviusy, i'll prefer a real drumset and a drummer if i could have it...

lol sounds like most modern pop music to me ... miming bimbos with everything else you just described, except perhaps KoolAid ... or perhaps that was your point! ;)

This is awesome. How is this insulting to drummers you can live in an apartment and record an album without buying a $2000 electronic drumset.
You still need to know your rhythms to sound good with this, so drummers should suck it up and not be so emo
