Some comments from the extension author (I just saw your post in the Reaper forum) The "please read the manual" message is displayed when the default action mode mapping (which is activated when the FX key is pressed) is not found. I will have to check why this happens, as your installation procedure is correct, sorry for the confusion. Apart from the need to assign the actions yourself, the extension should work fine. As already mentioned, you need to learn the values of the encoders by activating "Learn" (the button on the top left) and then selecting the different states of the parameter in the plugin GUI (the encoders can only be used for parameters with discrete values). I will improve the documentation on this point. By the way, "learn" makes plugin mapping much easier than selecting parameters from the menu, when it's activated just touch a fader with your left hand, move a parameter in the GUI with the mouse, touch the next fader, move the next parameter... And thanks a lot for the effort you put into this video.
Good stuff. I'm and X-Touch One user with Reaper and am awaiting which extension you think is best. I have CSI installed and am just starting to play around with it. Will also try Moss this week. It would be great to have a comparison summary with pros and cons, and best for certain types of studio workflows. I'm looking forward to it!
Thanks for doing this videos. I've now the X-Touch and I've been working with DrivenByMoss4Reaper because it's the one that has more features (and color coded) but there's still some things I haven't quite figured out yet, trying to make it work with regions, because at this moment it doesn't have it.
The plugin editing is the reason that I love this form of control. I'd like better control, but it is what it is. I've mapped... I dunno, 15 or 20 plugins in logical fashion. Channel strips get crazy, but being able to map both encoder and fader simultaneously is amazing. Thanks for doing these videos, even after using it forever it's nice to still learn new features. Protip - to use the encoder you have to "learn" the parameters, however it 'learns' after the control you last touched. So you have to touch the encoder then learn the parameters (by sweeping the value. Took me a while to learn how to do it.
The way to do it is assign the value to the encoder, touch the encoder, click "learn", sweep the plugin value (to load the range of values on the encoder) then click off learn again. This will assign the encoder. I have a video on my channel demoing the Plugin Alliance channel strip with the x-touch map I made for it. These can also be shared to other people with the proper plugins.
@g webster : since i own the same bx ssl plugin and intend to buy the x touch, i'm definitely gonna check out your video : Behringer X-touch Demo : th-cam.com/video/M00ysqbmilo/w-d-xo.html
Thanks Jon. I really appreciate you driving youself mad on our behalf. Personally I'd be interested in Smart Knobs 2 next as I'm just about to give it a go myself
Thanks for the video. Sadly after the years nobody found Reaper community commercially attractive and invested a time to make a decent controller. If one would exist it'll Reaper won't be a grave digger only but a serial killer. Having experience with Machine and Push which speeds up the workflow so much, and not only that it makes so many things even possible at first place coz you wanna be fast while in creative mood or even in bad mood. I know I know.. I should be the one to make that controller not another one who complains....
Thanks for all the X-Touch testing and sharing, it would be great if later on you can also share a summary/pros vs cons/comparison of all these options to set up the X-touch BTW, I saw you were using Radial Menu some time ago, are you still using Radial in conjunction with the X-Touch? if so, How does that work for you? Thanks again
good idea. I may make a chart or something. I wasn't able to stick with radial menu. I have a button on my mouse to bring it up but never use it. Conceptually I think its great and well executed, just wasn't easily added to my workflow.
Fx vpots...you need to use the learn button. Then it populates the table with values....handy for on/off stuff and discreet values...I don't think theres a way (yet) of using the vpots like the faders in fx ...but I think you can in action mode IE the EQ button when says read the manual....
Thanks Jon! Seems like this is comparable to DrivenByMoss - some advantages but some disadvantages too. Do you have a view on which is more stable? I tried DrivenByMoss but it crashed a couple of times. I'd like to see CSI next - I understand it's really flexible because you can map any control to any action or parameter, but I wonder if it can do any of the "custom" stuff beyond just parameter mapping - things like navigating folder structures like DrivenByMoss and Klinke do. (I'm sure it can't do anything with a UI, like DrivenByMoss's plugin browser.)
Is the latency recorded here just because of screen recording or is there a delay between the controller and reaper? Thanks for these videos! Do you still use xtouch with reaper? Which extension did you personally prefer? ❤️⚡👍
there's no detectable latency with the controller. I'm using x-touch with CSI extension. I've talked about in the live streams in recent months but no proper tutorial video yet
CSI is what keeps me up late at night , that's where I personally want this topic to get to , I'm on Mac as well and I also follow theReaper Forum CSI threads and I've got pretty far with 'copy and paste' from UNdark's Reaper Daw CSI channel, the coding isn't fun , but copy and paste someone else's code I can do ! @@TheREAPERBlog Thanks! Yes, it is. You could choose surface offset tracks with the early version, like the extender started from track 9, but now the option disappeared.
@@brucelau7794 Any idea for what to do with the offsets? Once I installed the extender it just mirrors the moves on the X-touch, and X-touch mirrors moves of the extender. But no data being sent to the extender's scribble strips.
It's really sad that important core features like MCU are provided only by REAPER extensions that are only for windows. This is a core DAW feature. LIke "hey, reaper is for windows, and mac and linux, but good luck getting any controllers working anywhere that isn't windows".
In my case the plugins mapping does not work at all. It does save but then when I close it and reopen automap is taking control of the plugin. No colors in the tracks. Buttons blinking with no sense. Button Tracks doing nothing ... This extension is very very poor compared to DrivenByMoss or Csi. I think for this controller and Reaper the future is Smart Knobs 2. Hopefully I did not buy an Icon controller thinking about this extension. In general all those free extensions are just that, Beta unfinished programs full of bugs and very unstable. Not recommended. Sad but it seems the controllers world for Reaper is very limited. In the end you have Push 2 for Ableton and Avid controllers for Protools. Sad but truth. Even SSL controller for Cubase is a shit.

Just be sure to sweep through the pot values slowly though, if you do it too quickly you lose some of the granularity.

Yes please Do it for Mac!
Yeah, I was a bit disappointed when he said at the introduction it's Windows only :(
Maybe it is time to just use a tactile monitor and use the surface just for transport controls ,navigation amd faders.
Can you use the X-touch with mac?
yes of course, I normally do as you can see in the other parts of this series
please do smart knobs 2!!!
