Behringer X touch one, is my controller of choice. I use it for a couple of things. During recording and mixing. Recording it great to get ya back to place you need to get when using Markers. Mixing for automation.
@@mixdownonline I recently got the X-Touch Mini. Just 1 fader, but it's got 8 rotary encoders, with 2 buttons under each. Like Chris, I'm still programming mine; for the moment, I'm using it the encoders to enable/disable sends and 'throw' delays and reverb. As it stands, the X-Touch Mini rotary encoders are a lot more precise than the encoders on my QCon Pro G2 (probably because I just took the G2 out of the box when it came and put it straight to work), plus I don't have to manoeuvre through various screens to get control of the FX sends... they're just there, ready! Plus, it gives me 2 layers to do my assigning. I AM lucky, though, that the X-Touch Mini works on my Mac (at least with Cubase 12 Pro), as Behringer has never provided a midi mapping program for Mac users; at this stage, it's probably very unlikely.
I've taken the plunge and got an X-Touch (8ch), plus 2 X-Touch Extenders for a total of 24 channels. Took a bit of research and fine tuning to get the 3 working together but the result is an absolute DREAM
Very interesting and thanks for the video! With Stream Deck, do you only use the shortcuts for Cubase or also the Midi integration (Midi Plugin and "Midi Remote" or Mackie Control features in Cubase)?
Nice overview. I am using the single fader version of Faderport, which is very useful for transport and automation. I have also set it up i Wavelab to use the transport functions, and it also works on the Fairlight page of Davinci Resolve which is the audio part with transport functons and the fader. In my opinion a practical and useful tool that I am using all the time.
Years ago I bought a second hand Novation SL MkII zero model. It's still connected to the computer but I don't use it often. I programed parameters for my TC M1 and D2 in it. I open it rarely though. I used it a lot for live gigs in a livehouse where I was working full time.
Great Video Chris! I have the Faderport 8 & have been thinking about grabbing the 16. I'll have to watch your video again about it. I do wish Steinberg or someone would help with more integration for Cubase like it is with Studio one, but I do like using it and would be hard to do without it. I also have the Kensington Trackball (wireless version). Love it and definitely can't work without it. Keep doing what you do Chris, I'm a HUGE fan & appreciate you.
Man, that's not an easy question... If you MIX more than anything else in Cubase, the Faderport 16 or a similar motorized controller is nice to work with. If you're more into Production, composition, and recording, then the Monogram CC. And if you're like me, ALL OF THEM Lol!
I used to have a faderport too but the MCU integration just makes it pretty useless for anything else apart from recording (in cubase). Just wish it had auto-bank and the ability to select multiple channels at once from the controller... Also the sends on fader is a bit cumbersome, wish it worked more like a live console with that.
Not everyone likes MCU integration, and yes, it has its limits, but for my workflow, the FP16 works well. I wish Steinberg would come up with a fully integrated controller like the FP16 though!
Hello Chris , very nice video about your controllers. You inspired me to buy the streamdeck , if you could make a video would be great help, happy holidays to you and family..(and new neigboards!).
Hi Chris, I am using, besides the CC121 from Steinberg, the Loupedeck CT for a while now. It's possibilities are amazing. It does everything that you showed for Stream Deck and maybe more. The advantage is that it has 6 turnable knobs, which also include press actions. Then it has 12 touch sensitive fields and a big wheel. The wheel also can have turn and press actions. And all knobs, wheels and buttons can have severel layers of functionality. For Nuendo, I use 3 different Cubase profiles: one from company Loupedeck, one from Sideshow, and one I created myself. Apart from Nuendo, I use it for WaveLab, TH-cam, DaVinci Resolve, Vlc Media-Player, Zoom, etc. Not too long ago they also added Midi functionality and I created a profile for controlling some parameters of THU-software (Amp and effect simulator). And it comes with an internal memory of 8GB, which you can use like any other external USB-Drive, so not only for its own data. Everything can be programmed also by a software they deliver with this appliance. However, I must admit that it took me quite a while to understand the logic behind this controller, when I started to make my own profiles. But I do not want to miss it any more. Apart from Loubedeck CT, I have also some controllers from Akai: MPK mini 3, MPD226 and MPD232. And my Presonus Studiolove Series III mixer can also perform as a DAW controller, using the Mackie standard protocols. I also have a trackball mouse, but I still have difficulties using it after being used to use a standard mouse for so many years... Thank you for your great videos and I am looking forward to the next MCC events to come. Have a nice weekend! Regards from Germany, Hajo
I don't know if it qualifies (it only controlls two specific plugins), but the controller I love the most is the SSL UC1. My only gripe is that I haven't been able to get it to follow the selected channel in Cubase (I've seen it work in other DAWs). Other than that, it's perfect!
Thanks, this is very interesting! Sadly I don't have as much room on my desk as you, but I could definitely squeeze a stream deck in there, and perhaps a little bit of Monogram CC too (being modular is a great selling point!).
Thanks a lot Chris for this very informative video tour of your controllers and how you use them. I would be very interested to see a full video walk through of the Stream Deck... Keep up the great work! Kind regards and blessings, MaxT
Thanks for another great video. Which of these (beside the mouse) would you say are the most essential for you? Mouse is the most important controller. The overwhelming majority editing is done with just keyboard and mouse. I've been running a Logitech MX Ergo Wireless Trackball Mouse for a couple years and love it. Scroll button combined with keyboard mod keys is essential for me. Hover over anything and adjust. Mod buttons (Ctrl, Shift, Alt, etc) and scroll button with any scrolling window allows for vertical, horizontal and Zoom. Comfort is essential with everything but particularly with mouse. For decades used center trackballsand love those as well (still have on other machines). Used a lot of trackpads which I find are not good for audio/video software at all. Big top side trackball is better for long hours of use because you move your hand around more. The Scroll button is just too good to give up at this point. I run a Nektar 25-Key Midi. These little controllers are essential and inexpensive piece of desktop gear for music. I have the big StreamDeck and it may be the single coolest controller for every app and windows. I've used mixing board controllers and never find myself using them enough for the space they take up. Thinking about adding something modular like Monogram CC though. I've also been messing with a Microsoft Hololens 2 with multiple Virtual Monitors and Virtual Touch controllers which is pretty wild. Imagine just poking in the air and being able to move around the studio with the giant controllers wherever you want or just following you around. Not quite ready for primetime and super expensive but it is coming..
Thanks for sharing, JJ! That is a good question...When Mixing in Cubase, the Faderport plays a significant role in my workflow, but if I add the other softwares on top of Cubase... I would say the Monogram CC. But again, I use them all :-)
Hi guys, can we use scroll for vertical zoom? In cubase? I can do horizontal zoom by scroll but for vertical, keyboard shortcut is meeded which is annoying often especially in midi editor
Hi. I just bought NanoKontrol 2 and I can't get it to change automatically to right set of functions in Cubase Artist 12. I'm not supposed to change the set of controls manually eg. when switching between mixer and plugin am I?

Great video Chris, I am setting up my new studio soon, I have, brand new, Stream Deck XL, Monogram CC, and soon to get the ICON QCon Pro G2 Universal Control Surface. I use Cakewalk by Bandlab and subscribed to your channel after seeing you with Mike Enjo on Creative Sauce. I am sure all of these will assist in my workflow, as it does for yourself. I also use the Adobe suite of software and will be starting my own TH-cam channel. I will check out your other videos on controllers and will see which others, probably all of them, you will do in the future. Nice. :)
When I read that you work on Cakewalk, I saw Mike right away...Lol! I assure you that with the combination of the Stream Deck XL, Monogram CC and the ICON, you won't be disappointed. And for your future YT channel, DO IT! It's a lot of work, but it's worth it.
Thanks for yet another top-notch vid Chris. My beloved fave CC121 is a joy to use, and my portable Nano Kontrol Studio alongside my UR 22C/Cubasis 3 Combo works a treat when I'm on the move.
@@mixdownonline Hi Chris, they are still available and I’ve heard that they do still make them in low numbers but I’m not sure how true that is. I had no problem ordering one in Europe and TBH I need to remind myself to use it more. I’m so use to the keyboard for transport (the space bar is so big and easy for start/stop) but I find the CC121 buttons for prev and next marker handy. I’m getting used to using the left buttons for monitor on/off, Solo, Mute etc. And the 4 programmable buttons for undo/redo. Etc.
Between you and Dom Sigalas I am going to end up with a track ball on my desk. I really like the integration of the Presonus controller/mixer with Cubase. It definitely speeds up the work flow in regard to automation.
Why would you use a mouse and that too an expensive trackball? Controllers are supposed to replace (or minimize the use of) the mouse and keyboard. Just buy a good MIDI controller like the Novation Impulse 49 or something... It comes with sliders, knobs and a ton of buttons. Get rid of that clutter on your desk, man. And one more thing... Auto-mapping is outdated and no more supported by newer hardware and DAWs. Switch to the HUI protocol. Assigning the DAW (Studio One) controls to the buttons, sliders and knobs on the Impulse controller is super easy !!!
I love my setup the way it is, and I also have an Arturia Controller that I work with when writing and recording music, but there's no way a Keyboard Controller like the Novation or Arturia will replace what I have on my desk for the type of work I do Mixing music and Video editing. And for the trackball, I can't work with a mouse anymore, gives me hand pain.
Do you use these kinds of controllers in your studio?
