Orson Welles "War of the Worlds" on air closing statement.

  • The War of the World radio broadcast on Hallow we'en eve, 1938 caused a panic among many listeners that tuned in late. As the studio became aware of what was happening, Welles was instructed to offer an on air apology.
    Once the dramatization ended, Welles gave this fitting statement. We can know this was not scripted because he always closed his broadcasts in the same way, and this was completely "out of character" for him.

    WMMR, in Philadelphia used to broadcast the "War Of The Worlds" each year on Mischief Night. That was way back in the late sixties/early seventies. Sitting in a car, on a dark night, we would listen and try to imagine the mindset of the people in 1938 as they listened to the world being invaded by martians. Truly entertaining.
