  • Built in 1896, This tug was once an Admiralty berthing vessel.
She was sold in 1947 and was later lost whilst under tow on 17th November 1947 and then came to rest here at Compton Bay, and has slowly been falling apart since..

Ah yes remember this as a kid on the beach. We used to call it the pirate ship lol! Thank you for explaining about it we never really knew.

The Pirate Ship is a lot better name.
      (Especially for kids..)
I'd probably suggest it might be one myself.. :-)

Great vid, i wonder if there were any salvage attemps soon after she went aground?

      I imagine so..
Pity it had to end like this so shortly after being sold..
      Someone wasted some money..

Or an insurance job, not worth salvage so much scrap metal after the war, and difficult to get to, my father said there was an attempt to tow it off but it failed.@@Oske.images

Saw this ship stuck on the beach while on holiday in the 1950s it was complete then, i was 10 years old, my dad said they tried to tow it off but failed, access to the beach to break the ship was impossible due to the cliffs, later that day at another beach i found a mine cutting float went dashing back to my dad quick dad i have found a torpedo , happy times.

You saw her quite fresh then..
Seeing as she arrived here in 1947.
Pity filming wasn't cheaper those days.
I'd love to have seen a video of someone clambering aboard back then. 😐

Are you following mr lawn. ? lol, its a great wreck and in so close to the shore line, , don't get your feet wet.

Following Mr Lawn is no easy feat..
I hear he's known as 'The Shadow' by some, and skulks around out of the view of decent folk..
(Apart from when he moons at people). So it's been said by an unreliable source from Poole..
Got a lot more than my feet wet.. Not been on this wreck since the early 80's.. :-)

Thanks for reply - yes probably some left over Nazi gold or paintings - wine and Champagne. Sounds all a bit odd to just sink like that with no attempts to salvage.

      Nazi Gold and Wine?
Bloody hell ! I'll be returning on the next big spring tides with a swag bag & a corkscrew & glass! 😉

Such a shame. Part of history left 2 go 2 ruin.
