It's funny, my brother got around to watching OG NGE after spent years saying it was a worth a peek - he isn't a big anime head but watched them here and there. He finally got to watching, partly because his colleagues/friends prodded him more, and he kinda was ready for it, I am guessing. He absolutely loved it, even the ending. Not only that, but he hasn't seen End of Evangelion yet or rebuild, but he was very satisfied with the OG show.
Great video! My only complaint is I wish it were longer, the 'inspired' section felt a little rushed and it would have been interesting to hear why those specific series are considered to be inspired by Evangelion. Having watched a few of them I could tell where you were coming from, but it still felt kind of like an afterthought. I would love to see an even longer video (or series of videos) on this same topic, maybe exploring different sci-fi UI, like Star Wars, Alien, Akira, etc. and their connections to real life UI. Stuff like NORAD and NASA's Mission Control are so influential, and imo, inherently beautiful in their pragmatism, and they certainly had a massive affect on sci-fi design like in Evangelion (especially the Thermonuclear War simulation scene from War-Games).
I would add to the list of influences, the works of Gerry Anderson... the Supermarionation guy. Known for Space 1999 and Thunderbirds. Especially I would point EVA-researchers towards the series UFO where a shady organisation called SHADO defends earth from weekly incoming attacks by mysterious and enigmatic aliens. You have the bold colors, the whacky sci fi designs, the blink and you miss them white on black all caps text flashes, And Straker and Freeman is basically Gendo and Kozo respectively. We even have the son of the organizations leader that... uhhh... let's just say that Straker prioritizes about as much as Gendo cares about Shinji. Anno has been pretty open about being a fan of UFO... And Space Runaway Ideon (a kids anime that also got a two part sequel movie that kills off most of its cast in horrendous scenes)
Hell yeah, I literally just made a short 40k fan animation using blender and aftereffects to show corruption/hallucinations hitting a computer terminal. I heavily referenced EVA for the UI bits. Cant believe I found this vid after the fact. Awesome analysis!
6:03 *minutes this is the timer that triggers whenever and eva is separated from its umbilical power cable and begins operating on their limited internal power, it's always 5 minutes before they shutdown.
21:20 Caspar, Balthasar and Melchior were not kings in the bible, nor were they _actually_ named. The reason their names are present here is much more straight forward: The wise men that visit baby jesus, in the greek version of the bible, are referred to as, you might have guessed it, "Magi". They were half academics, half magicians that were commonly employed in Persian courts (which is probably were the king association comes from. They were SERVANTS to kings, not kings themselves). I was also a little disappointed that you did not mention that a lot of the UI in Evangelion is NOT even based on CRTs, but on illuminated segment displays. These are even lower tech than CRTs (by a lot) and were incredibly cheap (and thus popular for electronics) in the 80s and 90s. It genuinely hurt a little to see what is clearly meant to represent an ISD on screen while you talk about CRTs.
Funny fact - Neon Genesis Evangelion has a lot of influence for elements from an old UK TV shows called UFO. Hideaki Anno was also the head of the Japanese fan club for UFO TV show.
Haha this rules. I'm currently studying graphic/video/ux design and have taken mondo influence from NGE user interfaces (and David Rudnick, for that matter.) Truly love that y'all went into actual design choices instead of vague notions of "aesthetics." Will invest in future content.
quick heads up, at 5:23 you claim the japanese characters in the evangelion logo to be the words for "new era" and "century"? i don't know where you got that from, but in reality they just spell out "evangelion". 👍 edit : an additional 3 seconds into the video, i'm filled with regret. i'll keep the comment up as a reminder of my past hubris to self-reflect upon or something wise like that. great video.
okay cool video but i take huge umbrage with the way you brought up ultraman. akio jissoji is an episode director for the first ultraman show and his directing style is one of anno’s biggest influences. as well as many other external similarities between ultraman and eva it wouldve been cool to see you explore that a little since anno’s directing style fits perfectly with eva’s graphic design style

this is just what I needed at the start of my third NGE rewatch
god speed soldier
Going to therapy is a good alternative if you ever get bored

I've been wanting a video talking about this for so long and I'm so happy someone has done this. Amazing Vid!
thanks for watching !

I love this cause it's such a new take (for me). Everyone breaks down the meaning behind the story but UI breakdown is unheard of 😮

I don’t think I can forgive you for showing me the Aaron Boone home run to the tune of A Cruel Angel’s Thesis
6:05 fake fan, obviously that's the 5 _minute_ timer for how long an Eva can stay active without the umbilical cable
Omg more people need to see this vid , you're really underrated
share w ur friends!
Absolute heater through and through
Enjoyed the video. great work!
Earned a like and a sub! Great stuff!

That intro is insane 😢
this video was Made for Me. thank you so much! loved it!

thanks for tuning in this is exactly what i’m going for!
ever since 96' anno has been inspiring my dreams with his wonderful designs and creations.
Really nice Video. I'm a huge Evangelion fan boy and also a graphic designer, so this really hits the mark🔥
glad we have the same niche interests!
I frickin love the arts, started my art book evangelion collection sadly I missed the Die Sterne Art Book 😢
I need a video analyzing the UI design of serial experiments lain after this video
I'm sure the 1970 tv series UFO was probably also an inspiration for it.
what is this intro music? very nice video on graphic design :)
it's digimane
thanks but cant find anything on that digimane, what is the name or author i donno what digimane is sir :)@@dansplaining
If you make a sequel, I’d like to see your take on the original Ghost in the Shell movie or Cowboy Bebop…
May I suggest graphic design used in Japanese video package design used in Evangelion as well? It's worth taking a look.
