I think subs are superior but as someone who can't pay attention to something when I have to both read, watch, and listen to a language I don't understand, I simply settle for dub because it's easier for my brain to process

Honeslty I can’t say for sure, but I feel like the OG version with subs would let you get a better fit for the characters. Anime has had the issue of getting good VA’s for years so a good amount are at least accurate. This… not so much lmao.

Graphics in old games look very clean and uncluttered, which is why I like them so much. I can appreciate newer graphics too, but there is a charm in these old simple visuals.

The problem is when old or outdated graphics are called "bad". Bad graphics is something completely different, Forspoken has bad graphics. These games are just old, a lot were revolutionary in their day, they don't suddenly become "bad", they would be if they were released now by a AAA developer with no nostalgia or explanation... that's the game. Then in that context, sure.

Back in the day, I thought all these games had good graphics. It's hard for me to go back and play some of those game because of low graphics compared to today, that and I beat most of them.

The golden age of gaming was from 1997-2012 if you ask me. There are outliers of great games outside that time period, but the advancement that occurred within those 15 years will never be replicated again. Also, the chances game developers took would never happen today either.

You gotta figure out your definition of ‘low poly’. N64 games had around 700 polygons on screen at any given time while Shenmue had around 15,000 polygons for its characters and around 60,000 for the background. I would not consider this ‘low poly’. I believe that if the max is under 10,000 that could be considered a lower poly game. Otherwise good video!

Low poly graphics force you to fill in the gaps with your imagination. That’s why my experience and memories of low poly games are so much more vivid and… well, memorable. And no it’s not nostalgia. I’ve been playing new games with a low poly count and they have the same effect on me.

It's like a book. Sure you can go watch frickin godzilla vs kong with a huge graphics budget, sure, but NOTHING will ever make my brain light up as much as successfully rendering a fantasy scene from LOTR in my head. The gaps we fill in are so much more important for engagement than what we're ACTUALLY seeing physically. Just like IRL!

I remember playing G Police and Urban Chaos, and thinking to myself what amazing graphics they are.

I think those games had "aesthetic" that felt more purposeful... because it was. Dev artists had to handcraft these places, little was automated or randomized (same with level designs, but we're speaking of art here). Compare that to new games were the look is kinda of built by the machine doing its own calculations and the input of artists is less direct. I think art in old games was more deliberate.
