As someone who was in the teens when all this was happening, I didn't care too much for the really early low poly graphics like FF7, much preferring the more detailed 2D pixel art like FF6. The likes of Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter in the arcades were the exceptions. PS2/Dreamcast with their "not quite as low poly graphics" did look good to me. This is why my nostalgia is hit more by pixel art retro graphics these days than by PS1-style retro graphics. Though Quake style early 3d boomer shooters still strike a chord. BTW, has anyone ever told you you look a bit like J.D. from Scrubs?

I think the Mario kart 64 and animal crossing is fine, but the sonic looks WAY too goofy-

I don't think nostalgia is the only reason we're going into this low-poly renaissance (I know this is not the argument being made in the video). I remember thinking 8 and 16 bit sprite work looked old and outdated in the early 2000s ('95 kid), and I think some of that was caused by the rhetoric of the time period. So many people said that about 2D games and then later low-poly games that it wasn't common to hear an alternate opinion. Considering how impressionable kids can be, this is probably where a lot of this comes from, and then as we get older, we don't have those same biases anymore. I personally love seeing all the low-poly games being made in the past few years. I'm hoping I see many more of them as this decade goes on.

im at the point where ultra realistic graphics while amazing when you see them, dont mean much to me after that anymore because the gameplay attached to most of them is so bad or boring who cares about how good it looks. im having more fun playing low poly games that dont require a $4k computer to run. gameplay/story>graphics. im playing Surroundead which uses Synty low poly graphics and honestly, its just an art style. you can have incredibly detailed low poly if you want. just go watch some of the Synty vids on YT. some of the stuff theyve created is amazing and id want to play those games.

quick heads up, at 5:23 you claim the japanese characters in the evangelion logo to be the words for "new era" and "century"? i don't know where you got that from, but in reality they just spell out "evangelion". 👍 edit : an additional 3 seconds into the video, i'm filled with regret. i'll keep the comment up as a reminder of my past hubris to self-reflect upon or something wise like that. great video.

2:44 this is not true. Smoother goraud shading was also used in mgs. I think it was a bit more expensive to compute. I think that's why tekken 3 didn't use it as they wanted to keep it 60 fps

SEGA usually tends to optimize their games well. Specifically their Sonic games on PC. If you make the graphics absolute garbage, you'll make your game run 100x better.
