My newborn baby has been crying and unsettled for half an hour. I played him this and he relaxed and fell asleep instantly. So the lullaby works!

This is Afunakwa's voice singing a lullaby from the Solomon Islands. The song is about one sibling trying to console a crying brother after both of their parents passed away. Afunakwa who is the singer on this highly acclaimed version, released by Deep Forest in 1992, was never recognized for her contribution to the song. She deserves all the credit. May her soul rest in peace. Google Afunakwa...

    BAEGU (Solomon Islands):
Sasi sasi o to aro aro
O angi si nau boroi amu
Ni ma oe e fasi korona
Dolali dasa na, lao dai afuimae
Afuta guau mauri, Afuta wela inomae
Sasi sasi ae o angisi nau
Boroi nima oe e fasi koro na
Dolali dasa na, lao dai afuimae
Afuta guau mauri, Afuta wela inomae
    ENGLISH INTERPRETATION
Young brother, young brother you be quiet
Although you are crying to me
    Your father has left us
He has gone to the place of the dead
Protect the head of the living, Protect the orphan child
Young brother, young brother hey? Although you are crying to me
    Your father has left us
He has gone to the place of the dead
Protect the head of the living, protect the orphan child.
At the core of Sweet Lullaby is the voice and melody of Afunakwa from the Solomon Islands who comes from the island of Fataleka. Her singing was recorded in 1969 by ethnomusicologist Hugo Zemp in an effort to archive the traditions of a fading culture. This interpretation and lyrics come a translation by her grandchildren. The song is said to be very old and hence the new generation does not understand every word. The song is about a young child crying because he does not see his father with the family. In response his elder sister sung this song to comfort as well as tell him the reality, with an appeal for their deceased father to protect this child in the land of the living (local ancient belief is that the dead care for loved ones they left behind). The old woman also said that the sample, if listened to carefully, used some words and sounds that were added to make it sound more melo. Expression of some words twice, as well pronounciation of most of the words are different from that of normal conversation. Eg. ‘O’ should be OE’, Angiangi should be angisi. This is very common with local traditional songs. Thanks to the people of the Solomon Islands for the lyrics, translation, and interpretation.

Deep Forest is two French musicians, Michel Sanchez and Eric Mouquet. They compose a style of world music, sometimes called ethnic electronica, mixing ethnic with electronic sounds and dance beats or chillout beats. Their sound has been described as an "ethno-introspective ambient world music."

I have been trying to find one close to what I have heard originally, I see videos of those in Aftica which doesnt speak "Deep Forrest" to me- I always thought of the native people in S America fitting that description- this video fits it as well.

Enya did not make this, nor sing in this song. It was made by Deep Forest and the original vocals were taken from a song called Rorogwela which was recorded by Afunakwa of the Solomon Islands.

The name of this melody is called “Rorogwela” and I just found out that it's not Pygmy at all. ''it’s a Baegu lullaby from the Solomon Islands, which are located just east of Papua New Guinea, roughly 8,000 miles east of the Central Africa rainforests where pygmies live. “Rorogwela” is sung by a woman named Afunakwa, who was recorded in 1970 by a Swiss ethnomusicologist, Dr. Hugo Zemp...'' I'm saddened by the crime Deep Forest committed in stealing the song from a woman called Afunakwe who was from the Solomon Islands and not even acknowledging her or compensating her and her people after making millions. No shame!!!!!!
