Awesome stuff! It's really too bad that platinum is so expensive, it'd be so nice to have lots of it. Guess we just have to wait for that asteroid platinum mining business to take off, then we'll have the stuff everywhere.
don't worry they'll only sell small amounts to stop the price from crashing. Or they'll do what they did with diamonds. Just gotta love capitalism and min-maxing profit :)
As for Platinum, we needed some and after asking 20+ jewelry shops finally someone sold us junky platinum alloy quite cheap, it was about 180 miligrams of platinum (total volume was 220 or so) for about 6 euros
The Gayest Person on TH-cam god damn it! You beat me to it. I was gonna say the exact same line. I was even laughing about it in my head for the past 10 minutes.
I have a catalytic cigarette lighter, and it is about 120 years old! I read somewhere that it contains platinum black! It contains a tiny 2.5 mm black irregular shaped ball, which is suspended in the middle of a mesh of 6 strands of 0.1mm titanium wire! This is inserted in a tube of cotton soaked in methanol and selfignites!
5:59 "Once molten the mix gives off NO fumes... " and let me finish that sentence off for you "at which point I realized that a fume hood isn't just a noisy nuisance and I should have done this where there is one."
3:39 Here in the US, if someone sells you an ampoule of a highly reactive chemical enclosed in a clear bag, generally you take it over to your fume hood, get set up for your reaction, then open the thing still in the bag by smacking one side of it with a hammer.(unless it's highly reactive with polythene or something, in which case you party on with a hacksaw as you do)..
Great to see you back Tom. Interesting reactions here. At least Pt has gone under $800 US these days. I keep hoping the price will go lower and I can stock up on some Pt labware.
It's sad that I broke my rough upload schedule long enough 'to be back'. Ah anyway, yes it's always great to see the platinum price failing. Quite different chemistry, and the metal would just be such a useful thing to have around the lab
11:46 nah, the glass breaks because it's a molten potassium salt. Glass, as some may know, is made by fluxing silica with "soda", or sodium. That allows the silica to form a viscous semi molten mass which is easy to work with. Same with borosilicate, except there's also some boron oxide in it. Anyway, potassium is also a very active glass flux. It'll change the glass composition when it's molten. The hotter it gets, the more active it gets. This will screw up the glass' properties and throw the finely thermal expansion properties of the borosilicate glass waay off. It'll only do it to a certain depth though. So you'll have one layer with a modified thermal expansion bonded to the original one. Naturally, it's not gonna hold together at some point.
1:1 it is probably better (although I haven't had experience running a metal reduction really) but the cost of using stochiometric Pt is just so excessive. So Pt tends to be catalytic and Ni isn't, so perhaps they can be exchanged, perhaps not
Is 1g platinum bullion not sold in Australia? It's pretty simple to toss it into aqua regia and boil it down. Don't see why you need to order from Aliexpress. Long waiting time + higher cost.
I would have just put the orange cake in a little cupil with some flux and melt it into a bead of metal in my blast furnace, but what do I know about pyrometalurgy or chemistry
Shouldnt you have something like a bunsen burner and a crucible to do this reaction? I'd imagine a burner could easily get 500C. One thing actually that I find interesting is in these amateur labs I never see a bunsen burner used ever while in school use of a burner was fairly commonplace.
Question! Only a basic understanding of chemistry here. How does the platinum go from having (presumably) six single bonds with the chlorine to (presumably) only two double bonds with the oxygen? Does this mean there was a change in charge or something?
Why didn't you make the chloroplatinic acid from platinum metal? Nurdrage has a good video on it, and it's a lot more cost effective (1g of platinum is like 40 bucks)
Good question. The price was good and it saved me a bit of time, but also I could never find like small amounts of Pt to buy, it was always at least a few grams and I couldn't afford the upfront investment at the time
@@billsmathers7787 they all seem to come from the states which adds like at least $30 of postage on them at least (which seems unfair for 1 gram of something...)
How safe is it to heat nitrates? I could be wrong, but the platinum is not changing oxidation states so the Pt complex isn't a reducing agent for the nitrate. Does heating without a reducing agent make this a relatively safe process?
No fume hood? No one is concerned about platinosis?! The symptoms can take years to appear but I guess if your ok I should be less afraid to work with the compound when refining precious metals 🤷🏻♂️
For future reference you can open these vials reliably with a small tubing cutter. Just go slow through the plastic and once the glassgets scribed snap it open 🤓
It's funny you would say that 1 gram of that chemical is about $50, it's not like it's pure platinum, but one gram of pure platinum would be less than that lol
Not sure. It might be because it is Pt(IV), and simple salts seem to be Pt(II)? And it doesn't get reduced by acids? Not sure why it doesn't form Pt(IV) salts though?
Hydrogen gas can be produced by dissolving Aluminum foil in caustic NaOH solution. Wanna see the reaction of your PtO2 with the H2 gas. :) *you have a cool TH-cam channel
Sir , can you help me i collect 100 gm platinium from e-scrape but problem is this that after coupling pt when i melt this that make liquid so please help me thanks
You would have been better off (more cost effective) buying $50 worth of Pt (~1gm) and dissolving it in hot Aqua Regia and evaporating to dryness to get the H2PtCl6. Love from Canada (no homo). Be glad to mail you reagents you can't buy there.
Bro when you flashed brave soldier on the screen I started laughing then the 2nd time I laughed again .....then when it said shit soldier after you said it broke I lost my shit dropped my phone laughed till I had tears picked up my phone seen the screen had a crack and immediately said to my phone "shit soldier"..... Thanks bro

The best part about working with these rare salts is that the price forces you to work with incredibly small quantities which takes skill.

I've missed you, man.
Aw it's always good to post a vid, thanks man

rhodium is even worse and its really a shame cause it's got a fascinating coordination chem, similar to chromium and cobalt (unsurprisingly)

Hey platonic acids can still be fulfilling
Almost as bad as catalictic

Is 1g platinum bullion not sold in Australia? It's pretty simple to toss it into aqua regia and boil it down. Don't see why you need to order from Aliexpress. Long waiting time + higher cost.
Used in drug manufacture so they only sell in ounces and above for some reason.
Do they not have triangular files in Australia? Score around that vial and give it a light tap.
Nice!
Do you plan to do any hydrogenations with it? You could do toluene to methycyclohexane and the likes!
I could do that! Or perhaps benzene? Or maybe, even better, naphthalene to tetralin??
Oh, yeah, that last one would be really cool! Naphtalene's easy to get, and tetralin is a useful high-boiling solvent. You could even make decalin!
Can you hydrogenate Phenol with this? Asking.
Did you have H3O written on the board? (Not H2O?).. Had to Google it, "Hydronium"

It has to do with orbital hybridization. Its a bit complicated but basically they have multiple valences.
