Been using these for 15 yrs. I also get different colors for buckets. Blue from Lowes for plumbing(blue=water), Red/Orange from HD for electrical(red=danger) Green from Menards for carpentry, (Green=wood). This way I can see them from a distance. I have several blue ones too some without the pouch for extra/oversize plumbing stuff.

I have been doing this for years. Some of my friends and people I meet on a job think I am crazy. But grabbing a plumbing bucket or an electric pail is way easier than trying to sort your tools before you hit the road. I probably have fifteen categories. Drywall is unto itself. Hole saws. Drill box. Wire wheels. Angle grinder. Saws all. Jig saw. Etc. Two of everything is an understatement more like four.

Jeff, I love your simple no none sense approach to renovation projects. I am learning and growing a lot from your videos. The bucket organization is so simple, easy and budget friendly. It beats spending hundreds of dollars on Milwaukee Packout boxes and similar storage devices. I even got an additional bucket with a seat on top for when I need to take a quick break. I would like to see how you handle your power tools as well. Keep bringing great content.

Last year was new deck, this year we are doing full kitchen remodel (even though you tried to talk us out of it this year ) 😀. I also use pencilpouches for tiny stuff. Bits, marker, blade, awl, few screws... tiny stuff. And specific pouch for electrics - small tester, cablestrippers, cutters, wagos, heatshrink, isolated screwdrivers, tape, etc.

  • @devinF1piper

I'm a bit fancy on the Packout system - what I REALLY like are the 15" organizer totes they offer. I'm a plumber, so I have one for general hand tools, and I have one for my soldering kit. It fits an MC tank, paste, spark lighters, pliers, flame pad, and an old peanut butter container where I keep odd 1/2" fittings. Same idea, saves a TON of time, makes organizing simple. The only difference is that I don't have as much space - so I have to pay up for the engineering! Honestly though, it's an amazing system, I love it, and going from one small job to the next (sometimes I'll go to five sites in a day), it REALLY simplifies the process of meeting the customers' needs

Love the tip. I have 1 bucket... and that's not enough. Because the tool I need is either in the basement, the garage, the car, or the bucket. So I'm still running up and down the stairs. I now realize I need for sure a plumbing bucket and probably some others. You are THE DIY Guru.

I pick and choose for the job and load them up.

I just bought three $20 tool bags for electrical, plumbing, and carpentry tools. I chose bags over buckets because I often bring tools to family's houses via my truck's back seat if weather is wet or via the trunk of my wife's car, and buckets are bulkier and tippier. It feels so much better to be organized--i used WalMart bags and cardboard boxes before.

I have come to a realisation this morning: I got more entertainement value here than on Netflix. And that's on top of the great information provided. It is also on top of taking DIYers seriously, especially with your recent initiatives.
On a personnal note, this channel helped me a ton in the last years. We purchased an old house an remodeled it all. The whole thing: gutted it, replaced the fundations & mechanicals, relocated the stairs, removed a raccoon family in the attic, etc, etc. As a bonus, I am certainly not alone to appreciate your humor and your realistic, honest delivery.
I am Happy to throw in few canadian bucks now, for what they're worth anyway. As they say, better late than never.
    Big thanks! Keep it up!

I started using the pail years ago. The reason was when in a crawl space when you got to the far end you need a tool, screw that you did not have. So out you crawl again and again. With the bucket it had all your tools, screws or what ever you needed. Was good to carry your waste material back out also. I now use it on every job not just the crawl spaces.

I had to go out and buy beefier tools and equipment when I started using hardwood for everything, so I now I have more tools than I do room to put it all. Went to replace some old outlets and light switches yesterday and couldn't find a single pair of needlenose pliers or my wire strippers because my tools are all over the place. I decided that rnough was enough, and instead of doing what I had planned to do, I instead spent my day finding all my tools from the bins and boxes that they had been kept. Then, I decided to put together 'kits' for different types of work i.e. electrical, carpentry, and I figured that I'd look to others to see how they go about organizing their tools. Stumbled onto this video which was EXACTLY what I needed. Pails are a genius idea.

Awesome video Jeff… I have a few of those bucket organizers and they work great. Lots of pockets like you mentioned to store all kinds of tools. I do have one for electrical, but now I have to get one for plumbing… Currently my plumbing tools are in one of those cloth type tote bags but some of the tools are buried and I have to move stuff around to see what’s below. The bucket ideal is perfect because I’ll be able to see most if not all of my tools at a glance. Re my current project: I’m converting my old kitchen into a bedroom since I built a 25’x 28’ great room with a kitchen / living room with a two-car garage below and I’m almost done with that… My next project is redoing or replacing a wooden front porch. When I constructed it, I used womanized construction wood? Now it’s getting old and time to redo it. I want to use structural grade plastic 2x10’s and 2x8 for the framing and the same for the flooring. My question is - is recycled construction grade plastic a good option to use since I don’t want to have to redo this porch again or is there a stronger grade rot resistant wood like hickory, I should be using…? Thanks for any thoughts and reply… PS Just absolutely love your videos… You certainly have a huge amount of experience and I appreciate the heck out of the videos. Save me a ton of work with those great tips+… THANK YOU….!!! Ray

I made a similar switch years ago when I got tired of spending more time finding tools than working on the project.
Except I use plastic tool boxes, and they are all clearly marked.
One for plumbing that has those tools. I have a torch box that has the brushes, flux, solder, ect for sweating pipe fittings.
One for electrical. One for all my air fittings, tips, and those cheap coil hoses that come in handy on occasion.
Then I just have multiple empty buckets in the workshop that I throw the bigger tools in when I need to tackle a job.
Like my 18" pipe wrenches, my 2' level, pry bars, etc. Then I throw in whatever selection of fasteners I might need and take that bucket, and the associated tool box to wherever I may need to work. When I am done, throw everything back in the bucket and put it back where it goes when I get to the workshop.
I also have duplicates of a lot of things spread across the various toolboxes. Razor knives, tape measures, side cutters, screw drivers, adjustable wrenches, etc.
The minimal cost of having duplicates pays for itself in the time I save looking for things or when I need to work in multiple locations simultaniously.
Like right now, I am rewiring my 2nd floor by going through the attic. So I need tools in the attic, and on the 2nd floor. Having multiple tools is so much easier than climbing up and down those attic stairs. Throw in the fact that I keep needing to pull home runs down to the basement, and I need tools on three different levels of my house at that same time.
I know, a tool pouch would cut down on some of that, but it isn't really practical to wear fitting through the tiny hatch to the attic, or when squeezing in to access the outside wall in the attic.

I’ve tried tools boxes but it’s not clear and I never know what’s in them until I go through few of them. This is a good system since u can see all the stuff right in front of u and there’s no lid. The only down side I see is it’s not stackable and it’s have to have it’s down location and I can’t stack other stuff on top of it

Sounds like you don’t use a tool belt? I don’t usually buy I’ve been told that will help with having to run back and forth to get the tool you left in the other room. I think I will try these buckets and also get a better fitting tool belt that I will actually use more often. There are a still defiantly some tools that you need duplicates of. Who really has only one screwdriver?

@@billsedutto8824 I use a belt when doing things up on a ladder, or on a roof, but they just get in the way when crawling around inside an attic, or even getting through the tiny attic hatch that I have in my house.
Also not practical in a crawl space either.

for ladders you can attach a rope to the handle and haul it up after you get to the top.

Thanks 4 sharing! I like the system but i think is good for smb who is using them quite frequently. As a homeowner that is using them seldom, i personally chose the Dewalt Tstack System although i spent around $600 but it keeps all my tools (incl all electrical ones) out of dust +occupying almost the same space as about 5 of those buckets. If i would work on a daily basis w them, ur system is more practical, indeed.

I made all my walls in my garage with spots to hang each tool. I used nails of various sizes. Like two nails to hang a hammer on. When I finally was sure on the locations I used a sharpie and made and outline of each so everyone else also knows. I also have giant long magnets that many screw drivers go on that I got at a big hardware store. I mounted one big cup on that wall for pencils, skinny stuff. I did more than that, but it’s a big part.

I have that same bucket nearby with an assortment of tools that I used on a consistent basis. Hammers, wrenches, utility knives, electrical tools, screwdrivers etc, etc.The rest are kept in the garage. I’m a homeowner who’s house is 70+ years old and is always fixing things here and there. Very useful way of organizing.

You should hire someone instead of fixing them yourself, because doing it yourself lowers home value.

    • @Gabriellariz

I’m not gonna hire someone to patch a hole on drywall, change a faucet, change a door, or replace my water heater when I can do that work and save that money. I’m sure the same can be said for any homeowner who has the skills to the the work themselves. I’m not bragging about it, I’m not the “knows it all kinda person” but with some elbow grease and some TH-cam help.......one can be surprised about what you accomplish.

I find it helps to have redundant tools. For example, sheet metal cutters are used in plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC. So I have a pair of these in nearly all my boxes. I don't like to bring more boxes than necessary, so you don't want to have to bring a box for working on sheet metal just because you have to cut a bit of flashing for a plumbing pipe penetration while you're plumbing. Same is true for carpentry. You're installing a door and need to flash the bottom of the rough opening. Installing a door is carpentry work, but carpentry, especially exterior work, involves flashing. Nearly all trades require a hammer. For painting, I carry tools for taking apart things that are in the way. I like to remove electrical fixtures rather than paint around them assuming that they aren't old and their removal would likely damage the plaster or there's a risk you won't be able to put it back up. Point being, I have an electrical meter, screw drivers, and sockets, pliers, allen wrenches, nut drivers, and a few things like that for painting because paint usually involves some degree of removing stuff. I tend to separate supplies from tools. So going back to the painting issue, the primer, fillers, sand paper, drywall mud, tape roll, would not be in the same box as the paint brushes, scrapers, roller rollers, puddy knives, etc. Tools should not run out, but supplies do. So I put tools in boxes or buckets, and supplies go in storage boxes.
