Great advice. Thanks. I’m glad I could see the contents of the garage, it’s like mine in many ways. So your approach to it was what I sought. Also, it’s a limited space!! That was my take away. So many organizational videos don’t show the clutter I’m like - get real, where is the mower, snow blower, bikes, chipper ….etc. Empty it out is the best way to start solving the clutter!
Thanks for this video. Just one suggestion. Move the trash barrels closer to the big garage doors so you dont have to pull out a car to take the trash out (or manuvuer the bulky trash barrel past a car to put it out on trash day.) My trash and recycle come on different days and recycle skips a week. There is jusy enough space between my car and the wall to double park 2 trash barrels. So every other week, the recycle barrel parks in front while the trash parks closer to the garage door. On the week recycle happens, when i move the emptied trash barrel into the garage, i rotate the recycle bin to be ready to take out. Both trash and recycle are the day after church nights so i just make putting out barrels a part of my church routine.

I agree with everything but taking everything out to start and allowing huge blocks of time. Some of us don’t have the option to pull everything out. For reasons such as lack of man power or living in an area where your stuff will take a walk if pulled outside. And some of us cannot work for hours at a time. Your garage looks awesome.
I completely agree with @EE-od6qm. These tips were amazing. I think anyone who has a garage should watch and learn from this. My parents definitely should. If I have the money, I’d buy a house and this would be 1 of the things 1st things I do.
I’m working on a project for 1 of my classes to build a web app to collect data about houses (just like a Zillow or Point2homes). I see it just like this; u gotta do a little bit at a time. Like u guys r saying, time planning is very important.
LOVED the idea of using the tape to help judge where to park the car! I hope to finally get my car back in the garage in the next month (after probably 10+ years) and plan to use that idea. Thanks!!
That is key for any declutter, and then sort / organize project. Having an easy "parking spot" for garden tools, vs. Carpenter tools, vs sports equipment will help so much!

I’ve been overwhelmed, since my husband passed, you’ve really helped me in prioritizing. I’m checking out some of your other videos. Thanks again. 😊👍
I liked your video. My wife calls me an organized horder and tool collector. We had metal rack type shelving and cabinets in our garage. Lots of storage totes. Almost everything was tagged as to what was inside. Totes, cabinets drawers all had tags. My wife loved it because she could easily find stuff in "my" garage. And like you said, try to get everything off the floor. Loved the tape idea! But I took it up several notches. Look up Swiss Trax. These colored interlocking tiles made the garage floor look great. And, like the tape, you could see in your backup camera where you were positioned at. We also had motion sensitive parking lasers. But they didn't always work so well. Swiss Trax look really cool! But definitely more expensive than tape. 😆 I'm so sorry to hear you have to demolish your garage! I hope you have a beautiful, organized garage after it's rebuilt. Thanks for the comment!
I was just talking to my neighbor about this! He was saying if you do a covering like nature stone it can save the old concrete and you can have a nice covering without having to replace the concrete. I'm not sure if that's true, but it's not in our budget right now. Are you considering something?
I always ask why? Will a covering help in some fashion- if it holds up and is not just a patch to cover up something, only to need its own maintenance program! Reorganizing and getting things off the floor, would make cleaning the floor easier, the floor it self will get dirty to the same degree. So if it looks nice…. Still gotta clean it, still gonna be cold as hell in the winter, not a place I want to be really. Can’t say a new fancy floor would be a priority for me. Thanks for your help!!
We just moved to a new house and 3 weeks later, still haven’t unpacked the boxes. My goal tomorrow is to organize it and throw stuff out we aren’t using. Great video!!
I appreciate this. I think the cleaning is a separate project, though. Decluttering first instead of taking everything out means that you can stop anytime and come back. Setting a timer for an hour and just doing certain tasks is easier than devoting whole weekends if you don't have the time/energy to do that.
We have a deep metal building (48 x 24). We park 2 cars in front and have shop and apartment in back. Recently I was tired of all the junk so I moved out my truck and dragged all the junk from the shop to the stall where my truck parks. All of the stuff that was not structure like the shop table with vice was moved out. We had not seen the floor in those spots for a long time. Haha. I am in the middle of categorizing and making electrical, plumbing, wood (2x4, 2x6, 1x4, plywood, OSB), paint & paint brushes, tools to inventory what I do have. To put anything up on the wall I put wood studs on the metal purlins (got to love that hard metal) so I can mount OSB. I plan on using nails in OSB for main hanging of small stuff. I am also considering the rails that have hangars like Rubbermaid Fasttrack or something DIY. Finally I am going to move bikes back up high on the wall and move the garden tools out to the pump house using similar methods. Not a lot to do is there. *whew*
Last time I kept tools in my garage the 2 people I was keeping handcuffed to bracket bolted to the concrete were able to use them to escape! I no longer store any tools there, and it's unfortunate because it's such great storage!
Glad you liked it! I don't know why I didn't put the links up! It's actually been 3 years since I made this video so I don't have links to everything, but here's what I could put together (these are affiliate links): Cabinets: bit.ly/3YVKdFF Bike rack: bit.ly/3PiYJ6Z Spring hooks: bit.ly/3sBBTyL Wheelbarrow hanger: bit.ly/47SP2n8
Definitely going to use the tip of the tape on ground to know how far my car is from the garage door. I have a treadmill on the wall facing the garage door so I have to pull in enough not to hit it. When I get out of the car always check the back of the car to see if I have enough room for the garage door. This gets old! Never had time to get a tennis ball so tape will work!
Organizing is so worth it. Once you touch something out it’s back in The same place. Back one car so doors open on same side. I have epoxy floor and it’s makes it so much cleaner looking and easy to clean. Slat wall keeps things organized at minimum departs allowing cars more room.
VERY good presentation with realistic tips. Other garage vids show people cleaning their garages…wha…? Not helpful. Best tip was holding off on buying storage bits and pieces. Thank you! (I’m gonna have to ignore your advice about clearing the space completely first - no can do🤷🏻♀️)
I totally agree with completely emptying the garage to start from scratch. Here are some of my garage organization tips: - If you haven't used something in a year, then you probably don't need it..(make sure you're using your spouse people). - Visualize, measure and sketch a layout where you want to put storage, tools, outdoor or activity equipment, etc. - If you have room for an outdoor shed to store lawn equipment, then consider getting a shed for those items that get dirty (i.e. lawnmower).
Hi. Great advice! Did you shoot a video of how you hung your wheelbarrow? Looks like you used the lip hook with a bungee. I've seen other videos but interested in how you did yours - I have a two-wheel wheelbarrow and most others I've seen are one-wheel. Thanks!
I have not made a separate video about that but maybe I should! I used a hanger from Lowes called "Blue Hawk 3.94-in Black Steel Wheelbarrow Hanger". Because mine has a plastic tub, it didn't feel as secure as I'd like, so I added the bungie for extra security. With a metal tub, I think that hanger would work perfectly on its own and it should work fine with a 2-wheel one.
Thank you! 🙏 I should’ve said this sooner. I’ve been responding to a lot of the comments others have made. Your video gave me a lot of good ideas. If I get a house with a garage, I’m gonna use all the tips u gave in this video. I can even organize my parents’ garage lol.
Maybe you can back in the sedan w/the trunk and park it on the left side of the garage. You can still open the trunk even if it’s backed in. I don’t know which of you guys (u or ur husband) drives that car or u guys use either car.
In a perfect world, my garage would be white and bright… with a professionally sealed floor. The garage would be totally empty and stay empty; aside from parking the cars and maybe our upright freezer. However, I am far from this dream.
Might wanna unblock the outside access door. It’s so handy so you don’t have to open the whole garage just to walk outside and helps save on heating and cooling
We actually had an outside access door with one large pane of glass on the upper half. We were concerned for our security, so we simply moved our outdoor full-sized refrigerator in front of it. Problem solved!
I bought some parking blocks off of Amazon for parking in the right space. I also keep things off of the side walls so that I have more room in between each vehicle. Since I live by myself I don’t have to worry about the passenger side doors so I have been backing one car in so that I have a lot more room to get out rather than being right close to the wall.
@@MomCanFixIt They have places where you can drill into the concrete and attach them if needed but I have found that it was unnecessary. They don’t move around. One of the best purchases I have made!
I find myself constantly tripping on parking blocks. I've had one sticking out just a few inches, carrying a box of items in the tight space, tripped and fell. I can't live that dangerously. Even just when the car is outside and I'm working in there it's a trip hazard. Definitely doing the tape.
@@debramason7237I agree with you on the tape. It’s the best solution. You don’t wack your head into a tennis ball hanging from the ceiling of your garage or trip over parking blocks. I was telling someone in 1 of my classes about this video today. She said she’d rather get hit in the head w/a tennis ball than trip over a parking block lol.
The tape trick also works better for me because I love backing into the garage. For instance, my grandpa uses these parking mats, kind of like the blocks you and @MomCanFixIt r talking about, to guide him w/his garage parking. When I saw him using them, I thought of doing this but it’s harder to feel the bump when you’re backing in. So then I thought I’ll just pull head in when I park in the garage. But this hack is absolutely genius. I’ll just put the tape in the front of the garage where I can see it in my backup camera when I’m pulling in.
if you reverse park you can close the garage door while in the car to be safe from robbers and unpack the boot full of shopping closer to the door of the house.
Great video. Thanks for the tips. The audio quality when you’re speaking sounds like you’re calling in over the phone, but I’m sure that’s easily fixed with a different mic. The rest was top notch. Good luck with more videos!
Thank you! This video is actually almost a year old and was transferred from my other channel. (Smart Family Money). I am planning to eventually produce some brand new content for this channel and I think you would appreciate my improvements in production quality. :) I'm glad you liked the video though!
If raising that much dust, you will do well with a $40-ish half-mask respirator (3M makes several series) with P95 or P100 filters. They have a soft silicone gasket that lets you actually get a good seal with your face. P100 is better filtration, more restrictive. And the replaceable filters are _so_ much cheaper than new lungs!
For my car parking I used a rectangular plate that when flat on windshield tells me I'm in proper position. I stole that idea from Airports and large jet airliners, they pull forward until that flat rectanglar piece is flat on windshield of aircraft, that way I'm not pulling forward then backing up to "yellow line on floor" behind vehicle
I've seen people hang a tennis ball from the ceiling. When you pull into your spot, it is perfectly placed on either window to give you a safe guide without the hassle.
Good tips overall. But i NEVER store things like ladders, wheelbarrows, shovels, etc in the garage. i hang ladders up out of sight under the deck or outside out of sight. All gardening or outdoor tools, shovels go in a shed. And I built many shelves high up on the walls and ceilings. I try to put nothing at all low on the walls or on the floor.
I’ve seen people use a ball hanging from ceiling of garage using a string so that when you pull in, you know where to stop with the ball touching the windshield. Good ideas. Now to find some extra strength motivation. It’s only half full. Or half empty. 🤦🏼♀️
Get a mitre saw and a circular saw. Make your own racks, hanging from roof, and on the wall. Use a level as well. You'll thank yourself. You could have saved yourself half your budget, maybe more.
It does take practice and skill to use those tools properly, plus proper planning, materials, and time to actually execute on all that. I like to DIY when I can, but not everyone can spare the time, especially when you have little kids.
@@turbo3922 OK, I just see an opportunity to get some half decent tools, research a little bit and build your own. I did it myself. Wasn't that hard, and excellent storage.
In my neighborhood, I’ve seen folks with 4-5 cars and not one in their garages .. cus they have so of everything else in it .. BMWs, Mercedes , Tesla etc
My grandpa is very into his cars being in the garage. He says that by parking a car in the garage it lasts longer. He & my grandma have a 3 car garage and my grandma has a bunch of shit for a family business they have on 1 side of the garage. A few months ago he got another car. I wonder where he parks his 3rd car since their garage can only park 2 cars in it. The other day I was telling my dad, “I wonder where grandpa parks his 3rd car since his garage can only park 2 cars. They would either have to park 1 of their cars on the driveway or get rid of grandma’s stuff.” My dad then said, “I thought u were gonna say they get rid of grandma” lol. 😂
It involves “give and take” when it comes to using our garages for parking cars and for storage. It’s like how we use our time because we only have 24 hours a day. If u use the garage more for 1 thing, then u’ll have less space to use for other things. Just like how if we use our time more for certain things, we’ll have less time for other things.
@@stephen39a oh my... Your home must get loud. 🤣 Yeah most people have never even heard of papillons and they are such a fun breed. He makes us laugh every day. @@MomCanFixIt Yep, it can be very rowdy at times. They are our wireless doorbell and burglar alarm! Don't hesitate to speak to anyone with a pap they are usually only to happy to chat about paps. There are few pap groups on Facebook with a lot of members. We have adopted 5 of the 6, usually after fostering for a while.
Looks better but what did you spend $500 dollars on...you didn't paint or redo flooring you just hung some things on the wall...something I could do for free with the random things I have. I liked your tips but was just surprised you spent so much
I almost liked the idea about putting tape on the floor behind the car, but it means that you have to put the car in reverse to check it before you go to park and exit the car or make an adjustment. I use a wiffle practice golf ball that not only tells me when to stop but it also aligns me left to right.
We used to have a hanging ball when we moved in but it drove me crazy to be running into it all the time. LOL Sounds like it's working for you, though!
This is for garage as storage and not garage as workshop. I live in the south and we don’t get snow here, so I’m not a fan of parking cars inside garages. Parking in the garage is a vulnerability commonly exploited by robbers and home invaders. If it snowed a lot here, I might consider it.
You are right. I was talking about storage and parking but I think a lot of the same principles apply if you are setting it up as a workshop. Around me, we have had a bunch of thefts of cars and items from cars that were in driveways so I definitely want to always park in the garage.
Yeah, wouldn’t the car be more vulnerable to getting stolen or broken into if it was parked outside. I was reading an article the other day that among the top ten most stolen vehicles in America are the Toyota Camry & Honda Accord. There r actually no high end cars on this list.
@totallyfrozen U sound like 1 of my high school teachers. She was like, “I don’t understand why anyone parks the car in the garage in Miami. Maybe in 1 of those places w/snow I understand.” Then I was thinking, “You just insulted my mom & my grandpa.”
@@MomCanFixItParking the car in the garage is also more convenient. U don’t have to worry about locking your car which a lot of times we’re thinking to ourselves “Did I lock my car?” Sometimes we’re hanging out w/someone & we even go outside to check if we locked our car. It also makes it easier when u have to unload something, for instance, groceries.
Lol! Which a lot of people in the US don’t use for this purpose. They have a lot of shit in there, even unnecessary shit. They don’t take the time to clean it out & organize it so they have to park there cars on their driveway.
I’m Chinese. The direct translation of garage in Chinese is “car room” and most Americans don’t use it for this purpose. My roommate & I were talking the other day about how a car in the garage is like not the norm in America. There r only very few people like me, @MomCanFixIt, & my grandpa.
@@MomCanFixItjust thought of something last night when I couldn’t fall asleep. Houses should come with outdoor sheds so that we don’t have to store things like lawn & garden equipment in our garages. Then we could for sure park however many cars in our garage that it was meant to park. I now see the other perspective of why people don’t park their cars in their garage. Some people just have too much stuff & need this as a storage space, especially people who have a small garage like a 1 car garage.
@@MomCanFixItThat was cute with the antique adding machine. That’s definitely a reason to get rid of it, “It doesn’t add up.” Is that your husband who was holding it?
Very nearly this entire video was of a woman talking in front of the camera. Since I was looking for videos of garage organization, I guess I would rather have watched a video on garage organization. - I see that this a new channel, so maybe pan the subject of your videos while you speak. Edit: But Kudos to not having loud music walking over your talking, seriously, nothing is more irritating than that.
The SUBJECT of this video is mistakes to avoid when organizing your garage. It would be rather difficult to express these mistakes without talking! Cindy, thank you for the information (as stated in your video title) AND showing us how to organize the garage. Also, the humor added in occasionally made it even more enjoyable to watch. Don't pay attention to the negative reviews; you did extremely well! This is the first time I have ever seen your videos - will be looking for more.

*whew*
Whew, that sounds like a BIG job!
Very helpful, thank you! Personal protective equipment is VERY important and I appreciate the section on it.
Last time I kept tools in my garage the 2 people I was keeping handcuffed to bracket bolted to the concrete were able to use them to escape! I no longer store any tools there, and it's unfortunate because it's such great storage!
Awesome! Do you have links to the racks/cabinets/etc you bought for this? Envious of your garage organization skill!
Glad you liked it! I don't know why I didn't put the links up! It's actually been 3 years since I made this video so I don't have links to everything, but here's what I could put together (these are affiliate links):
Cabinets: bit.ly/3YVKdFF
Bike rack: bit.ly/3PiYJ6Z
Spring hooks: bit.ly/3sBBTyL
Wheelbarrow hanger: bit.ly/47SP2n8
What is above your garage that required an I-Beam??? I've only see that in a basement, or a location with concrete/car parking above it.
Ha, that's a very good question! There's nothing above the garage - just attic space. They made some odd choices when building this house.
Glad I could help! That piece of tape really does save me time!
Thank you so much !! This is very helpful! Wish me luck
You can do it!
Organizing is so worth it. Once you touch something out it’s back in The same place. Back one car so doors open on same side. I have epoxy floor and it’s makes it so much cleaner looking and easy to clean. Slat wall keeps things organized at minimum departs allowing cars more room.
I would love to have an epoxy floor but we have such a long list of house projects!
Here are some of my garage organization tips:
- If you haven't used something in a year, then you probably don't need it..(make sure you're using your spouse people).
- Visualize, measure and sketch a layout where you want to put storage, tools, outdoor or activity equipment, etc.
- If you have room for an outdoor shed to store lawn equipment, then consider getting a shed for those items that get dirty (i.e. lawnmower).
Good tips! I definitely use my spouse at least yearly. 🤣
I don’t use a lot of useful things every year that I wouldn’t get rid of (tarps, dolly, table saw, wheelbarrow) 😊
Those wall cabinets look great and the yellow tape thing is a revelation. Thank you for sharing!
You are welcome! Glad I could help!
Great video, I’m sure glad I ran into it. I will be trying all these tips. Thank you.
Glad you liked it! Have you started your garage cleanout yet?
Heck, your garage "before" looks darn good to me :)
Ha, thanks!
So many great tips. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Great advice, thanks!
Thank you Mom! Great tips!
Nice job on the garage. Great video!
Thanks! 👍
Excellent suggestions!
Glad it was helpful!
Wow, such great info. Truly wanna thank you for all the great tips. ✌
Enjoyed your video. Thank you. I’ve been dreaming of a clean and organized garage.
I hope my video gave you some good ideas! Good luck!
Thank you! 🙏 I should’ve said this sooner. I’ve been responding to a lot of the comments others have made. Your video gave me a lot of good ideas. If I get a house with a garage, I’m gonna use all the tips u gave in this video. I can even organize my parents’ garage lol.
How about backing into the garage? Make unloading groceries a lot easier with closer access to the door leading into the house.
Mine wouldn't fit with the hatch opening that way (it would hit the wall). You're right that that works for a lot of folks though!
LOL me too!
These are all good ideas. Thanks for sharing your experiences with the garage.
Thanks! I'm so glad I could help. 😊
Might wanna unblock the outside access door. It’s so handy so you don’t have to open the whole garage just to walk outside and helps save on heating and cooling
We blocked it on purpose for security reasons. 😀
We actually had an outside access door with one large pane of glass on the upper half. We were concerned for our security, so we simply moved our outdoor full-sized refrigerator in front of it. Problem solved!
Thanks for this
You are welcome! Thanks for the comment!

Oh that's great that the parking blocks are working out! How did you attach them to the floor? Did you have to drill into the concrete?
Thanks! Good tip!
or a shop vac!
Or vacuum instead of blowing!
Thought there's going to be something useful in this video
For my car parking I used a rectangular plate that when flat on windshield tells me I'm in proper position. I stole that idea from Airports and large jet airliners, they pull forward until that flat rectanglar piece is flat on windshield of aircraft, that way I'm not pulling forward then backing up to "yellow line on floor" behind vehicle
Is it hanging from the ceiling? I am not sure what you mean.
I don't have a deck or storage shed. I'd love to have a shed some day!
@@MomCanFixIt oh, ok. Well, sheds are very easy and fun to build.
I’ve seen people use a ball hanging from ceiling of garage using a string so that when you pull in, you know where to stop with the ball touching the windshield.
Good ideas. Now to find some extra strength motivation. It’s only half full. Or half empty. 🤦🏼♀️
Yeah our previous owners had done the ball trick but then I was always hitting my head on it. 🤣 Good luck to you!
Bike hooks are 2$ you hang the bike from the front wheel n really high. Tennis ball on a string to kno how far to pull in
Why not paint the garage while it's empty.
Amaziiiiiiiiiiiiiing
Thanks! 😊
In my neighborhood, I’ve seen folks with 4-5 cars and not one in their garages .. cus they have so of everything else in it .. BMWs, Mercedes ,
Tesla etc
Hi, What breed is you dog, a chihuahua, papillon, other?
He's a papillon! He's not quite as naturally hairy as most papillons, though, and we trim his hair too.
Do you have a dog? 🐕
@@MomCanFixIt Yes, we have 4 papillons and 2 chihuahua's - hence the reason for my question. You don't see to many paps anywhere
@@stephen39a oh my... Your home must get loud. 🤣 Yeah most people have never even heard of papillons and they are such a fun breed. He makes us laugh every day. There is another papillon in my neighborhood and I keep wanting to pull over when I see him out walking but I am worried I will look like a crazy woman. 🤣
I felt exactly like my Mom was there telling me what to do
My husband placed a stop for my front tires so I know when to stop
Oh that's great! I bet that works really well.
Looks better but what did you spend $500 dollars on...you didn't paint or redo flooring you just hung some things on the wall...something I could do for free with the random things I have. I liked your tips but was just surprised you spent so much
The cabinets were the bulk of it! I didn't have free cabinets sitting around. 😊
3:20 That storage rack is now $195.
Oh wow thanks!
Welp, I failed on the very first step lol
how do they manage to screech so much
Any garage with organization has no mistakes.....lol
I almost liked the idea about putting tape on the floor behind the car, but it means that you have to put the car in reverse to check it before you go to park and exit the car or make an adjustment. I use a wiffle practice golf ball that not only tells me when to stop but it also aligns me left to right.
We used to have a hanging ball when we moved in but it drove me crazy to be running into it all the time. LOL Sounds like it's working for you, though!
2:50 dad joke alert
😂 Yep!
And leaving cars outside to get broken into isn't a vulnerability?
Lol u didn't even have that much in there
Keep it simple ! What's in your kitchen? What is in the dining room? What is in the bed room? What should be in the garage? Cars!
Sure but what about lawn and garden equipment? What about Christmas decorations (if you don't have a basement)?
Holy H. use a shop vacuum to clean, not a leaf blower. Insane!
No she can't
Your garage has a drain? Wtf?
It's a great feature, especially in Ohio where our cars often have snow on them that melts!
@@MomCanFixIt it's also a convenient place to drain old oil and coolant! Jk
Mine has a drain
@@SpeedDemonExpress Is “Jk” just kidding? Hope so. ;-)

Less face more garage please
She keep talking and it’s very annoying
Weak info
Worried about a child running into tennis ball lmao. Weak.
Yep. I prefer solutions that don't involve anyone smacking their heads into things! 🎾
I really wish you would showed more of the garage organization and spend less time on camera
Overhead storage....A torn rotator cuff (shoulder injury) waiting to happen. But that's your husband's problem Isn't it?
Don’t let it get that messy and full of useless junk in the first place. There is something called a garden shed. Look it up.
LOL. Feel free to come build me a garden shed any time!
There's also something called manners. Look that up.
@McBain How did building that garden shed for this channel’s host turn out? Oh, you just left a non helpful comment and ran away? Thought so. ;-)
