It's still so surreal to see my friends on screen like this. I got to be an extra in the movie and it was so much fun!!!

As a member of the seasonal camping community, I have nomad friends. Some are pushed into it by emotional or economic needs and others choose it knowingly. One of my friends, who had lost her home to the 2008 housing slump, once told me, "Don't pity me. I was forced into a van and found a freedom I wouldn't give up for any amount of money."
Yes, I think for many people economics pushed them into something they never knew they could have!

I watched this movie tonight. Truly a beautiful family, and makes you realize how you truly can find joy in the simplest of things.
Very sad that so many Americans can no longer afford to pay rent or buy and maintain a home. The middle class has been decimated.
Nomad here! (Although I'm not a fan of the desert; currently on a beach) I am grateful for this movie and how they showcased the beauty in our lives. Ride on gentle warriors!

I loved the movie! Glad to hear from the real people (some of whom were in the movie) that it was a faithful portrayal. Every Oscar they win will be well deserved. Congrats to the movie makers on their superb accomplishment!

I admire the nomads determinations making it work for them whereever they start a new biginning of their lives . I believe that God is with them always.
The most Conjuring dialogue in this film was--" there is no final good bye"! The allegory, the metaphors, narratives of some of the scenes of the movie are unforgettable. Thank you " Fern" for the unparalleled spell of acting!

I'm 67 and ready to roll off to Nomadland with a dog and a guitar.
I grew up within 40 miles (San Bernardino valley) of the Mojave in So Cal and just love to spend time out there. I've since spent long periods of my life traveling via motorhome, pickup/camper, kayak/canoe (12000+ miles), bicycle (40,000+ miles), backpack (6000+ miles), and sailboat (60,000 miles circumnavigated singlehanded) in 35 different countries. Much of my time has been spent as close to nature as I can get primitive camping. I am a Nomad - 70 years young and still going strong.

I understand how you feel. But I still think that many people who take it up won't last long.
While some might try it, I think few will adopt it as a way of life. Those who have made it permanent are usually forced to from necessity.
Behind the apparent beauty lies hostility to them - cities and states that enacted laws which banned people sleeping in parked cars - the penalty can be devastating - their car(and home) will be towed away and face stiff fines. They have to do some "stealthing" to avoid being spotted in cities.
Their insurance can barely cover anything so an illness can just destroy their lives entirely.
Quite scary.... Everything has it's pros and cons
Every is at the mercy of the health insurance company. Americans are one hospital admission away from bankruptcy.
This lifestyle is fantastic if your at the height of HEALTH and no kids.
So amazing and beautiful.
House prices are skyrocketing if you have a house cash it out and live like this with no worry if you don’t have one it’s even better not owning one for this price and be in debt for rest of your life

I started this lifestyle almost ten months ago. I haven't ran into any TH-camrs yet, but I have met other nomads. I do hope to see some of you on the road. At this point it's mostly learning.
Brilliant! Nomadic style has proved its practicality bearing in mind, of course, the inability of the modern state to tackle social issues. Come to Central Asia to meet genuine nomads.

I thought the movie mainly showed the realities & difficulties of short-term low wage working, overnight parking, & keeping warm.
I’m going to begin the nomad life in 3-wks I’m buying my van today , I’m 55yrs old divorced and not best shape ; never been scared before however I can’t even sleep knowing move I’m making I’m in U.P. Michigan where do I go first ?
there are still costs though, like the diesel and gas and repairs....where do they get money for those things?
What about if the vehicle breaks down?

There's this movie called Certain Women (2016) which gives similar vibes of countryside America. Sadly, Oscars never acknowledged that movie or First Cow (2020) from the same director.

My only issue with the movie, "Nomadland," was that Frances McDormand's character almost never smiles. I never felt she was actually enjoying her nomad life but was just doing it as an "F-You" to her family.
She looked beaten and defeated throughout the entire movie. I never got the sense that she ever overcame her grief and negative attitude to life.

There are a lot of different opinions regarding this "movie", I'm not really sure if it was a movie or a documentary. I'm afraid the one thing they never really covered was how to be a nomad as far as the monthly cost and requirements to be nomadic. If this trend continues where will the masses of nomads work in such a sparsely populated area with few employment opportunities to be had.
Her cloths looks a lot like Judy's from Cyberpunk not gonna lie

I've always wanted to live in van, but my country is too small, nothing spectacular to see like in the US
I am guessing the community of nomad life in a van is more neighborly than those of us who lives in high rise buildings or landed houses with gates

Until you're homeless, you'll never really know how it feels to be dispossessed of a country. A place to sit down would be nice, but the world tells homeless people to ''move along.'' And that's the damn truth.

family structure was always an illusion. the man was the breadwinner, the woman was the homemaker, no way could that be sustained in a capitalist world with constant inflation. eventually the man and the woman both had to go out to earn the bread, the kids were left alone and to themselves and their peers and it eventually all fell apart. it's not the republicans or the democrats to blame, it's the american way of life that has fucked everything up where the rich always get richer and the poor always get poorer.
Family structure was making one of the genders servants to the other. On the other hand this lifestyle allows each personality to flourish 🙌🏼

Drop a shlT where you stand, then drive away.
Some trailers have showers and if you go to RV or campsites they have shower and laundry facilities. Or you do sponge baths and wash by hand.
Now that gyms are open again, you can get a membership for like $20-$25 a month like Planet Fitness and go to any of their locations. Work out, shower, etc... They have over 1400 locations in the USA alone. Problem solved.

I have been a nomad for 35 years , I started with Jerry Garcia and the grateful dead. This is what we do, follow the weather, the parties and the good times. Theirs nothing depressing about it, like the movie was. Its not for everyone but I can't live any other way, 3 weeks for me in the same place is a long time. Honestly, it is just sad.
Go to many BLM dispersed camping in the west and you will find more quasi homeless. Most sites have 14 day limits but it is rarely enforced.
Sites along the Colorado River near Yuma are just beaten down. Think a Walmart parking lot in the dirt.

not really. gas and diesel will always be available as long as we continue to use plastic and rubber, which also comes from petroleum. rural use of gas is not what is killing the environment. it's the use in concentrated cities with gridlocked traffic where most of the pollution is generated and where electric vehicles could offset it.
