Five of Our Favorite Modern Patek Philippe Timepieces

  • In this video, founder John Reardon discusses five of his favorite white metal wristwatches from several of Patek Philippe’s modern collections. His thoughts highlight the continuity of Patek Philippe’s styles, mechanisms, luxury materials, and production, combined with a look at how this historic watchmaker has created an immediately recognizable brand that has the ability to adapt to the needs and aesthetics of modern culture.
    For example, these timepieces are all white metal pieces, which is popular in today’s market, as opposed to antique and vintage Patek watches that primarily featured yellow gold. It's rare for Collectability to present modern Patek Philippe timepieces, but insight into Patek’s modern collections shed light on how these beautiful timepieces of decades past, like the Nautilus, are recreated into modern, artful watches with new complication styles, innovative faces, and a nod to the legacy of Patek’s style and quality.
    Let us know in the comments which modern Patek Philippe timepiece is your favorite, and be sure to check out our website for all things Patek Philippe, including educational articles by the experts at Collectability, as well as advice on how to best buy and sell collectible vintage Patek watches.

    I never cared for the Nautilus....not the Aquanaut. Of the choices, the 5524G is my favorite.

    I love the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time watches big time! Ever since I laid eyes on the 7234R! It was a delight to see the 5524G in your top 5 modern Pateks. Last but not least!! I love when people love this watch!!
    The sector dial annual calendar is a gorgeous piece as well! I appreciate the throw back look to the style of the past. I tend to gravitate to that style in most things in life.
    I was recently turned onto the regulator and think it is extremely cool. What a special and unique piece.

      Did you finally acquire 7234r? My eye is on that one too but not sure if 37.5 lady watch is too small for a man?

    Nice vidéo. Thx J.R.
    The 5930G does matter in the current Patek collection (my view) : It’s the firt regularly produced Worldtime Chronograph. It has very famous ancestors : two pièces uniques.
    It combines a classical Chronograph (best of in house Flyback Chronograph (CH 28-520) from patek seen in the others very fine (in my view) contemporary chronograph like the 5960 and 5980). A chronograph is the best, most contemporary and useful complication of the XIX century and the updated worldtime complication (modernity of the upadted mechanism launched whith the 5110 and the romance of the Louis Cottier style frome de 30’s..) takes the best of what a WT can give you.
    In my view, it’s just after the perpetual chronograph the most useful and beautiful combination of complications.
    Some may have criticized the 30’ min counter but to me, it’s not an aberration for a PP chronograph (see the 1579 which also bears a 30’ min. counter, the 2499, ref. 130 etc.. ). furthermore, it combines the joy of seeing the movment of a flyback chronograph (gives life to the watch) to the peaceful and quiet way of telling time by a classical WT (ie. with no display of the second). So : it bears the genes of a classical dial (baton indexes) and case (spider lugs) but with a twist of modernism : the hands are not dauphine hands but bears a more contemporary and discrete design, the case is a reinterpretation (like the 5230) of a what is known to be the most iconic case design of the WT (the one of the 2523). A true classic on-going.

    Great list! I agree with every single one. I could even add one more from the aquanaut family (5164a , first aquanaut with travel time / 5968a , first aquanaut with chronograph) cliche but awesome, lol

    The 5524 calatrava pilot is the epitome of adventure and beauty in one. Superlative class. I prefer in Rose Gold as well, but what a pure exquisite design a total artform. The best looking Patek Philippe ever and is totally sublime.

    for those of us old enough to remember when the Nautilus was not as hyped as it is now the one to go for is the travel time as I can see in forty years it commanding the attention and prices the Nautilus does now. The Nautilus was a huge departure from normal for Patek back in the seventies and the travel time is so these days. Just like twenty years ago who on earth would have a steel Patek dress style watch, look at the prices of those going ever northward now. Go for the unusual or controversial in watches and nine times out of ten with all brands its those that will go crazy in collectability decades later!

  • @Theo-ul8qm

    Beautiful watches! It’s always special to see so many Pateks together in one place. My favorite is probably to regulator, though that sector dial is very beautiful as well.
    For some reason, I still find it a touch odd to see a full rotor automatic movement in the back of a Patek watch. Probably from looking at too many 5970 vids 😅.

  • @MisterSomm

    • @johnreardon3158
      @johnreardon3158 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for checking out the videos! In terms of pricing with modern white metal watches, I see the 5235G as one of the most reasonable buys today but the 5396G is right there with it. It's very subjective I admit...

  • @sbsb6494

    Mr Reardon, please do a 5235 review. It is a unique piece and needs a longer video! Say hi to the pontiff!

    • @danhem100
      @danhem100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. Lucky to have picked up a 5235G in mint condition. This watch holds so much significance in the Patek story. A regulator with AC function, with a totally unique movement within the entire collection, oh and the buckle decoration....another one of a kind reserved for the two 5235 references.
      A watch lovers watch, understated, proud, yet isolated in every way. It's a classic.

    Enjoyable video to watch. Always difficult to put your opinions out there for everyone to judge. I too love the 5235g and 5396g. The 5235 more due to the 40.5 mm size.
    I have been looking to try a 5235g on the wrist before purchasing. I had seen it in the boutique once a few years back. Wish I would have tried it on then.
    The prices for them have been going up some. Videos like this don’t help either :). Any idea on the number of 5235g produced.

    Great selection - especially the 5524, I love how its something that on the one hand is a departure from what most think of from a Patek (Genta design or a Calatrava derivative) but it still fits so well within their collection and just makes sense as a Patek, beautiful watch 👍
    What are your thoughts on the 5960/1A?

    Agree the 5396G sector dial annual is very underrated. In terms of the 5235G, the newer 5235R has a much more elegant and less controversial dial with very cool white lacquered hands (much like FP Journe CB). The 5930G would only appeal to well healed pilots, as they can use the 30-minute flyback. Travelers would have no use for a 30 minute chrono, nor the soft metal and no water resistance. And collectors would rather have a 5170 MW chrono and 5230 world timer.

    Do I get it right that you (and e.g. Tim Mosso) think that ref. 5235G is much more interesting and collectible than ref. 5235R? And if so, what is the reasoning behind this? Is it that ref. 5235G was the first release of the annual calendar regulator, that it was in white gold, its monochromatic/stealthy look, that it is now discontinued and, thus, the number of pieces out is limited?

    John- why do you think they discontinued all the world timers? Demand seems really weak. The 5930G is relatively easily available as is the 5235R and 5235G

    • @johnreardon3158
      @johnreardon3158 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sumit, That's a great question. Demand for world timers has been relatively weak compared to other complications but over the last few weeks this is changing especially after the last round of discontinued pieces. Still a great value buy!

    I respect your choices. But I think you slightly missed the mark with at least two of your selections. The 5296G sector dial is a simpler and more classic rendition of the modern sector dial rather than the 5396G. And the 5164A Aquanaut Travel Time is the most aesthetically appealing of Patek’s Travel Time watches. I enjoyed your comments about the 5235G. It certainly was a watch out of left field and may well become a historically iconic piece.
