    Why did the speaker keep choosing the government side even though the opposition was clearly louder? I am interested as a brit because here they’d call for a division straight away, although divisions can also be deferred here it is rare.

    • @thegrvoflightning9020
      @thegrvoflightning9020 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Because the Speaker typically calls for the side of the Government as they’d usually have the numbers to win a vote. The reason they were deferring divisions is that under the Standing Orders that were sit for Friday Sittings, divisions wouldn’t be held until the next sitting.

    The alp was trying to change it that all speaker votes where approved automatically for 4 days so the in power party could just not bother showing up. 100 years of history and it would of been the first time a speaker could name and approve things on his own right instead of what majority of mp present wanted. This would of highly weaken government mps and independents positions to cross the chamber. I'm actually surprise the speakers would be willing to be part of an assault on the very parliament they are elected to represent for party loyalty. In this case the liberals are correct.

      I'm glad I came across this evidence of how sincerely self entitled the LNP were back in 2008 ignoring the speaker and treating woman like absolute shit.... hopefully our votes for Labor will not only address the crimes committed by the LNP in the last 10 years but also deal with the clawing back via a robo debt the billions in unpaid taxes from our extreme wealthiest.......

      @Sopez1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JCoates98 Its in the video my friend. Anyway 20 days later on the '12 MARCH 2008' new standing orders came into effect, removing this loophole which helped the then ALP government avoid parliament accountability.
      133(a) was updated to 'On Mondays and Tuesdays, any division called for between the hours of 6.30 pm and 8 pm shall be deferred until 8 pm'.
      The above fix, which removed the 'loophole' has change slightly since to be in daytime hours. No government prior or since has made such a radical change to 133(a) like shown in this video to use it as a 'loophole' to delay votes for days (to Wednesday) so they can just not bother showing up on 'Mondays and Tuesdays' to avoid questions from the opposition.

      The speaker is somewhat assumed to be biased, since they're still human - hence the ability to dissent from their rulings etc.
      The problem to me is how much money this is. It's a funny clip, but even just the 40mins times the members present would be a big dollar figure. What a waste.
