Lived in Henderson late 70's tp early 80's and was heavily involved in the local off road racing scene. Spent a lot of time at the Las Vegas Speedrome (Dragstrip, Road course) where they used to start and finish the Mint 400 and they also had weekly short course races there. That footprint is where the new speedway now stands. There was also the remnants of a large (mile?) banked oval in Henderson near the intersection of Boulder Hwy and Lake Mead, which an old friend who grew up there said operated briefly in the 60's. He said after it closed they would drag race on the straights until the city ripped the asphalt, putting an end to those shenanigans
In addition to Las Vegas Park Speedway, there was also the Caesars Palace Circuit that was built in the parking lot of the casino before LVMS was built. The Caesars Palace circuit hosted two F1 races in 1981 & 1982 and is considered one of the worst circuits in F1 history. It also hosted two CART races in 1983 & 1984 before being abandoned & is now the Forum Shops/Mirage Casino.
Las Vegas native here, no idea this track even existed until this video
Great video! It would also be interesting if you made a video about the other lost racetrack of Las Vegas: Stardust International Raceway
I thought Smoot was involved with that too, GPLaps did a great video on Stardust as well FWIW
Great video. Need to get S1apShoes out there to go over the land and what's left
It’s the Westgate Casino (home of our biggest sports book) and the Las Vegas Convention Center
great footage and memorabilia! BTW: Las Vegas Park Speedway can also be seen in the 1955 movie "Las Vegas Shakedown" which can be watched on youtube
Really interesting video. Never knew about this track before.
TIL that there's another speedway in Vegas other than LVMS.
Anyway, I enjoyed this video so much and it made me know more about this obscure track. Looking forward to more installments of Abandoned Race Tracks.^^
Really interesting track. Miss when tracks had character
Welp, this track is going on Liars, Thieves, and Lawyers from S1apSh0es in the future
I’m going to preserve this race track in 2024 and rebuild it.
I'm loving the frequency of all this content!
Interesting fact: One of the important figures in developing Las Vegas into what it is today was Oran Gragson. Yes, he’s related.
Wow. I grew up in Vegas and went to the nascar race every during the early 2000s. I never really considered it my him away from home. But had no idea that Vegas used to have a track for horse racing.
No other way to go out in Las Vegas other than penniless and alone in a free hotel room
Love to see this in Lost Speedways Season 3
Never heard of this track before tbh
Has Dale Jr with his TV show on Peacock went to this track?
Swerved me bro; I was expecting the infamous Caesar’s Palace Speedway for the CART days, but this was interesting
Big fan long time sub never knew you were from vegas, I’m off Cheyenne and 215 brother keep making these great videos!!
Air shows used to be held at the track back in the late 50’s/ early 60’s.
Wow Fred Smoot the former Washington Redskins player also invented a time machine too?
I really love your Abandon racks series. Fascinating!
As somebody that was raised in Las Vegas, Darian’s research on this racetrack was spot on and interesting to learn about.
Please do correct me if I'm wrong, but did Dale Jr Lost Speedway do an episode on this track? Very interesting and very intriguing, and also very educational for all fans (whether Die-Hards and fans from the younger generation)....
2 million in 1956 is worth about 20 million today
Love these videos
Never heard of it until today
great video sad 👍🏁😥
You know it would be interesting if horse race tracks would used more with auto racing if they need convert in case horse racing in future gets unpopular. The meadowland in NJ would be ideal for maybe a auto race and very close to nyc area. But hey that’s wishful thinking
bro this is my home track (LVMS) I've been to a race and 3 EDC's! I got to see Jimmy johnson win!
a track that was build in the 1950s and barely did any racing events. It wasn't surprising that it was failing from the beginning. I admit it was good try at first but with darkness and dusty winds picking up in the air it didn't look it was gonna last at all.
We need more of these vids
THANK YOU SO MUCH. A TOTALLY AWSOME EDUCATION. THANKS FOR SHARING. I LEARNED A LOT.
Great video Darian!!!!
Smoot sounds like a good friend of the Blackwell Brothers
I never run well at Vegas on the Nascar games. I think my best finish is something like 15th!
Great video
We also had a track that was NASCAR sanctioned called Craig rd Speedway at 5th street and Craig rd . U should do one about that .
They definitely had the tote board the wrong way up
Great video on a lost track
Could you make one of Riverside?
What about a Forgotten Sponsors series
U need to talk about the moyock dogtrack in moyock NC
A track you should do a video on is Cajon Speedway
I knew of a few guys who raced Super Modifieds and Sprint Cars there in the "Deadly" 1960's.
Oh shit! This is new!
:D hey my hometown of las vegas is on here ^^
Future uploads: Abandoned Race Tracks: North Wilkesboro Speedway and Not A Bust: Scott Goodyear.
Interesting vid
Can you do Canfield speedway?!
interesting it was near the westgate and lvcc home of the sema show vegas was different back when
Cool. I never knew this
As you totally skipped over Craig Road Speedway, which had weekly races, twice yearly "Open Comp" races which had drivers from all over America race for huge purses for the time.
ahhh greenspun. thats where i went to middle school at ahaha
What is your take on a Grand Prix coming to Vegas in 2023?
They get abandoned for a reason, Laughcar is a fading series.
6 of 18 - instead of nearly half the field, you could have just said "a third of the field."
Good to know
Wendy Rene in the background. After laughter
Joseph Smoot, not former Redskin, Fred Smoot, although I do enjoy listening to Fred, aka "the Mouth of the South"!
Hank Greenspan has a middle school name after him and I went there
Abandoned Race Tracks: North Wilkesboro Speedway
I don't think he really needs to make one about that, we preatty much have everything we need to know about that track
The story of North Wilkesboro has been told enough. Plus, it's getting renovated so it may come back to NASCAR.
Marty Robbins
Abandoned Tracks: Jukasa Motor Speedway/Cayuga Speedway
I'll have to look at up this I've been here since 95
6 outta of 18 is NOT Nearly 1/2 the field 😂
I thought this was Slapshoes.
Do You Remember IndyCar Ran Street Course From The 80s Las Vegas ☺
@@plisskenationbackfromthede3657 Look, if Miami gets to call itself a street course, an RFK gets to call itself a street course, then goddamnit Ceasar's Palace is a street course.
Wow.
please do more episodes
You better be careful Matthew dilner will be knocking on your door
👍
Johnny Harra Elvis 1977
Jacobs back 🤮
NASCAR bust Brad sweet
🤨🤔
I think Langhorne would be a good one. Noone talks about it despite being arguably the most dangerous track in history
what do most abandoned track have in common?…
…the guy owning the track is a money launder lol
*S1apSh0es wants to know your location*
