This was the first Indy 500 I watched flag-to-flag and now 16 years later, i'm about to attend my very first Indy 500. Unbelievable experience so far! 🙌
God this Stings!! Marco Andretti’s Career could’ve been changed forever with that one win 2006. I’m rooting for him this year to break the curse And bring the Andretti Family back to Indy 500 Winners Circle.
It really did alter his whole career trajectory. It is probably hard being any Legends kids when your grandfather and father were so dominant. I think he had 3 career wins in all and is nowhere close to even getting on a podium the last 8 years.
Being a Sam Hornish fan I was super happy he pulled off a pass and took the win from Marco. Few things from Hornish Indy 500 win. It was first one won with a last lap pass. It was only one he finished all 200 laps.
Going into turns 1 and 2 it looked like Marco had it in the bag, then you see Hornish close the gap quickly into 3 and had him setup coming out of turn 4 Marco didn't defend on the final stretch and break the draft. No substitute for experience over youth. Still you want every race to be this close at the finish makes for a great memorable race.
I think that this is right around the time that I started watching open-wheel racing (04-05ish), and I was bananas and I vaguely remember this.... blows my mind whenever we talk about IndyCar, we tend to think of the dynasties of Penske and Chip Ganassi, and we sometimes forget about the Andretti Autosport...
I still remember watching this race on TV and being so shocked that Marco lost it at the very last second to Hornish. 16 years later I'm still not over it... lol
The Andretti Curse is so popular, it’s hard to name and remember another curse in the Motorsports world (besides the McCurse) EDIT, 6/2/2022: The Scott Dixon Curse
@@davidvasquez08 Lance Armstrong won 7 Tour De France, Ricky Carmichael won 7 MX Titles, Jeremy McGrath won 7 SX Titles, and Valentino Rossi has 7 MotoGP Titles, but Giacomo Agostini has 8 MotoGP World Titles.
Good video. I've been a racing fan since I can remember. I had also helped out on pit a crew for a local driver and was co-owner of a midget race team when I, by chance, met Sam Hornish, Jr. He was 20 years old at the time and nobody had ever heard of him, including me. But I followed his career after that and being a fellow Ohioan, I was ecstatic when he won! I was sure Marco was going to win and I wouldn't have been too unhappy about it, but to personally know someone who won the 500 is pretty cool. One of the oldest moves in racing; look high, go low!
Plus, Marco would have been the first true rookie to win the 500. All other "rookie" winners were well accomplished prior to racing at Indy for the first time.
I remember watching the 06 500 as an 11 year old from Ohio. I was stoked that a fellow Ohioan won that race, and didn’t realize how significant of a finish that race was until years later
It feels like the spirits who cursed the Andretti family also gave Sam a golden mushroom from the Mushroom Kingdom and installed it in the engine block of his car!
One thing that marco needs props for is not blocking sam. Marco slid over- allowed- but did not come back down on Sam which would have caused complete devastation and the race would be remembered for wrong reason.
BFM, now please do a video about the Dixon curse, which we now know exists. Six-time IndyCar champion, won the Indy 500 in 2008 and didn't touch the winner's circle there ever since.
Kyle Moyer lost this race for Marco. Telling a 19 year old kid, "Bring it around. Do whatever you can just bring it around" with 1 lap to go probably made him lift in the turns.
I think Marco Andretti got into professional racing too early and easily. He should've built himself up to be a winner in his own right and then get into the pro ranks.
Marco sounds like one of the biggest "What if" in recent Indycar history. Maybe he should have done 1 or 2 seasons in Indy Lights, but man in the early years I feel like he had a lot of potential and talent. Just checked some races on yt between 2006-2008 and he was a serious contender for the win for 12 times and he was barely in his 20s. In some of them he was crashed out or he had some technical problems. Feels like later with the DW12 never felt that comfortable after 2015 season. Such a shame because the guy had the speed to win much more in his career. Maybe he should try something in NASCAR...
This is kinda like one of those ‘greatest drivers to never win the Daytona 500’ speakin of which, That might be another possible topic for the folks at BFM.. ‘Championship winning drivers to never win the Daytona 500.
how about a video on Danica leading the race and then being told to fall back to 3rd, I couldn't believe it when it happened, and it's basically a story that has been buried.
IndyCar bust. Only two wins in almost 15 years while driving for one of the best teams in the series when Dario Franchitti got an Indy 500 and a championship in the same team... Definitely underwhelming. You could cut some slack in his first years, since he started as a 19 year old, but even in that time, he showed flashes of raw speed and talent that, ultimately, didn't translate to anything worthwhile in his later seasons.

Just checked some races on yt between 2006-2008 and I've noticed that he was a serious contender for the win for 12 times, and he was barely in his 20s, with a better luck he could have run three times in a row in the top 5 at the end of the championship standings. Sadly in some of these races he was crashed out or he had some technical problems. Feels like later with the DW12 struggled massively, especially after 2015 season. Such a shame because the guy had the speed to win much more in his career. Maybe he should try something in NASCAR... Still, as he was part of those 2nd/3rd generation driver dynasties, his career was WAY much better than many other 2nd/3rd generation drivers like A.J. Foyt IV, Larry Foyt, Al Unser III, Robby Unser, Arie Luyendyk Jr... In the end I think that maybe he was on the same level of Graham Rahal.
Sam Hornish is the biggest party pooper in Indycar history, I'm glad Scott Dixon exists so he erased his one trick pony oval only driver and his 3 championships against a largely weak field, the best engine and tons of luck. Otherwise people would be calling a nascar bust the best driver after the split.
This was the first Indy 500 I watched flag-to-flag and now 16 years later, i'm about to attend my very first Indy 500.

First race i ever watched flag to flag was the 2001 Daytona 500
Andretti Autosport has five Indy 500 wins. Wheldon in '05, Franchitti in '07, Hunter-Reay in '14, Rossi in '16, and Sato in '17.
I'm assuming he meant Michael had one win as a car owner going into the 2006 Indy 500
Andretti in the Indy 500 is the equivalent of Dale Earnhardt in the Daytona 500
Except Dale won his Daytona 500
@@Ob1tuber Mario won it
It's the other way round for Andrettis. Dale grinds first then win later, but Andretti wins first, grinds later
OBJECTION!

The Andretti is like Coca-Cola flavours and Star Wars films. You can’t beat the classics.
So basically in this case, nobody beats Mario
except that ALL the Star Wars films are classics. ALL are awesome.

Well, I guess congratulations to Marco Andretti on his win at the 2022 Indianapolis 500, if the BFM Jinx works perfectly

Thanks for the videos...I have had TV service for the last 12 years and rely on channels like yours for entire.. thank you!

I blame inexperience. He really shouldn't have let Hornish get a run on him.
Exactly, too early despite lineage
Imagine if Marco Andretti won the Indy 500, AW MAN!!!
Maybe Hornish wouldn't make the switch to NASCAR so early..
They’re never going to break this curse sadly. There won’t be another Andretti to ever win the Indianapolis 500.
If anyones an expert on curses it’s definitely Darien
I was so angry with this ending
You cannot talk about the andretti curse without talking 1992 and 1994.
92 was soooo painful because he was smoking the field
it really sucks that Marco has come nowhere close to winning Indy 500 ever since
this is what ruined marco career. if he didn’t get passed he’d be a multiple time champion
Can you imagine the conspiracy theories if Marco had taken out Hornish and Michael had won under yellow!?
It would have gone like edwards vs keslowski and/or allison vs Yarborough
Michael has won at least three as a car owner
