    The lap 0 crash was absolutely amazing. They spent weeks claiming that higher speeds and less experienced drivers would lead to a wreck fest at Indy (partially true, there were a lot of harmless spins early on) and that the "best drivers" would be in Michigan. The race also started later, likely to give some kind of comparison to the average viewer of the virgin IRL vs the chad CHAMP. So when the best drivers in the world can't make it to the green flag, and the race is postponed an hour so the best drivers can get into backup cars I imagine a lot of people switched back to Indy and never changed the channel back.

    • @marklittle8805

    Honestly, the whole Indy/CART split really is the biggest backfire ever in motorsports (al least for me) 🤣... Now even Roger Penske got to own Tony George's biggest pride and joy (Indy itself) and said "checkmate, dude" 🤣 🤣
    Also, keep using GT4's music bro 👍

    • @The52car
      @The52car 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Was it a checkmate, or just Roger realizing the Speedway was always right...

    • @girabyt3
      @girabyt3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@The52car bit of both, because trying to replace the indy 500 it's like trying to replace the superbowl, tradition makes it Impossible ... Also, remember the split was mostly because of costs, how would creating a new division help that?? Specially if, ironically, that foreign talent George was complaining too was also bringing sponsor interest = more money??
      I understand to give chances to the dirt-track local racers (Tony Stewart for example), but you have Indy Lights for that... George should have just swallowed his pride and let sponsors inject money first to balance costs... THEN, create a new local talent division or expand IndyCar's field to let that talent shine on it's own...

    • @girabyt3
      @girabyt3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@GregBrownsWorldORacing afaik, IndyCar today runs both the Road course (for the GP) and the obvious 500 oval, so I don't think mr. Penske doesn't waste the infield 👍
      Also, reinforcing the "Checkmate", remember the 2000's indy 500, the time George got owned by a CART team (Chip Ganassi) with a foreign racer (Juan Pablo Montoya), pretty sure Penske was smuggling all the race seeing a CART partner pissing all over the IRL racers, even if it wasn't his team 😅

    The sad thing is Michigan became the third race in the triple crown after Ontario was closed down, and was a very popular race during the 80's and early 90's before the US 500 but the whole split, the US 500 and subsequent disaster that happened when the fans were killed just completely ended Michigan and its legacy in IndyCar. Every year I wish for Michigan to come back to the schedule, but I don't think it will ever happen.

    so the race itself didn't stop running after 1999, the US 500 branding was added to the michigan date that had been running since the early 80's. they actually ran michigan twice in 1996 before going back to just once the following year. in 2000, CART would use the Vanderbilt Cup instead as its championship trophy until the merger as indycar preferred using the astor cup as the title trophy.

    • @The52car

      Tbh, I kind wish they would go back to the Vanderbilt Cup... the Astor Cup had a very short history prior to its recent reincarnation.

    Question: what would American open wheel look like if the race results flipped were the US 500 turned out to be a good race with no tragedy and indy had a terribly race with the amateurs causing chaos?

    • @maestri09
      @maestri09 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nothing.
      IMS has endured worse crashes and tragedies than the ‘96 split, and interest has always remained high. CART-even at its most financially successful-was never bigger than the Indy 500. The US 500 was just another Michigan 500; an entertaining race, very fast, but nothing standout from the rest of the CART season. It took about 5 years of bickering for the racing community to figure out the Indy 500 was bigger than both CART and the IRL.
