In a game like bloodborne I agree but in a game set in medieval fantasy no, armor should have stats since its actually armor not clothing like lies of P or bloodborne.
It's better than I could have ever expected. The devs get the Souls formula, but they added so much of their own souls to it. I love the Perfect Guard combat mechanic, it's so refreshing compared to the usual strafe, strafe, dodge, attack formula. And I'm so into the story. The world building, the characters and environmental story telling. For the first time, I'm actually reading all the notes and letters. And best of all, you don't need a Vati video to appreciate the story. I'm on chapter 11 and can't wait to play through again.
I agree that being a more active participant in the story was really cool, but also keeping story details vague enough to where you still have to piece it together, ala souls. Also, I'm standing by the black rabbit brotherhood being the best example of how to do a gank fight that I can think of. I hope even FromSoft themselves can take note on that one lol
Think this is spot on, Nioh and Nioh 2 are really good but they take their own direction enough to make it feel pretty different. Lies of P has truly impressed me in how it clearly understands why soulslikes have such an allure while being confident in their own weapon system that was really cool. I am hoping the end tease is for another game not just dlc because there is so much they can do with that story.

Glad you managed to get the review copy. I just beat the game yesterday - was great! Definitely agree that its the greatest soulslike. I did love Jedi Survivor earlier this year but this game feels more true to the souls formula whereas the other one is just the Star Wars World - not really as mysterious as the World of this game. One can only hope Lords of the Fallen is just as good.
Definitely one of the more difficult ones il give it that. It's far more difficult the fromsofts games but that might just be because iv more or less mastered that formula.. most frimsoft bosses have a hard time knowing what to do with aggresive players like myself..in lies of p u WILL get fucked up if u are too aggressive and don't have parries mastered (parrying is probably my weakest area besides sekiro)..if u come too aggressive u won't have enough stamina to defend or run away/dodge the upcoming barrage in lies a p which is a huge challenge... also fromsoft rarely has legit multi phase (full health bars) bosses and when they do its balanced In that one phase is more manageable than the other.. in lies of p the multiphase bosses have equally difficult phases that require u to fully master to the 1st one if u are even gonna have a chance with the 2nd! mostly because most 1st phases need to be cleared using up as little heals as possible, which is difficult when u think u beat a boss with no heals left just to find out NOPE ur gonna need to figure out how to make it out of the 1st phase with enough heals for round 2!!
I have to agree. Lies of P is absolutely the best Soulslike I've ever played. I hope Lords of the Fallen brings its A game because LoP is gonna be hard to beat! I have been getting my ass handed to me in LoP lol. Some of the boss fights are tough! I'm only about 7 hours in so far. So I'm sure I have plenty more ass whoopings to come.
Nioh is more like Ninja Gaiden but with souls like elements, Lies of P however I feel kinda has perfected the soulslike element, I feel right at home playing this game as play any other Fromsoftwere game, the only difference is the story telling and wouldn't say it strays too far. Lies of P is the oerfect soulslike game I really hope they are successful enough to continue making more games, finally someone can compete with Fromsoftwere.
Blasphemous plays exactly like a metroidvania great game but not really a souls like. No RPG elements since there's no stats or level up, dying makes you lose fervor not exp and in 2 its actually beneficial, the upgrade system is different, the combat doesn't revolve around stamina. Maybe the only similarity is the healing mechanic, otherwise it's a metroidvania through and through, the combat, the map, the backtracking and movement upgrades that allows you to continue progressing or to explore areas you couldn't reach before.
It makes me so happy to see so many people love this game as much as I do and funny enough I used to suck at souls(I couldn’t figure out where to go in ds1 till my friend elped me I always went to the cemetery 😅) and now I’ve beaten ds1 ds3 bloodborne Elden ring all these multiple times and have become a souls vet in my own right but lies of p I was excited for from the moment it was revealed till release and I rarely give this out but it was an honest 10/10 for me and the fight that secured it was the white lady she was a truly worthy opponent and I am man enough to admit I cried when I beat her because of her story and I’m glad I was able to give her sister the apple i can’t wait for the next game
after platinuming the game I no longer think of it as a “soulslike”, I consider it a true souls game. what I mean is it isn’t just “like” a souls game.. this IS a big-boy, AAA-quality souls game we essentially got the 8th FromSoft souls game and it wasn’t even made by FromSoft

I love the game, currently getting fucked in the ass by Laxasia in her second phase.... Holy shit that boss is crazy to the point that I think it's just overdesigned because it does too much shit too fast. But overall the bosses except the door guardian were great, yes even the gank fights, because the were done properly and always had only one agressive target that attacked you and not some fucking Elden Ring gargoyles, crusible knights or Forskin Duo bullshit.
I personally think Lies of P is a better game than any of the games that clearly inspired it and I used to have both Bloodborne and Seliro in my top two. I agree that LOP was at its best when it did its own thing. Phenomenal game. Must play!
I think this game needed more time for development rly. Feels like much of the game was rushed out especially the middle sections. And the bug that cause player model to lose collision after interacting with objects like doors and elevators will haunt me for the next week for sure, you can just skip entire sections by running straight at locked door and pressing A, how this wasn't patched before release XD
You're not forced to do that. Also, are you not aware of how the speedrunning community have absolutely fucked the souls games, flipped them on their back, and fucked them again?
this video gets Lies of P's philosophy and what I think is wrong with it. The game uses a lot of ideas from FromSoft's games hoping to recreate it's magic, but the result is a game that's very recognizable for anything but it's own ideas. I really disagree with this definition of what a Souls-like is. Hell, Sekiro barely counts as one if we're judging by it's similarities to previous titles.
A flawed masterpiece, a diamond in the rough, Lies Of P is an incredible game and easily thee best souls-like so far. There are a couple flaws that I'd like to point out, the first is the lack of a poise system for our character, while the enemies do have poise. The second is that just about EVERY boss, save for a few, all have 2 phases. Now a 2 phase boss fight isn't a bad thing at all, but I feel like they should be used kinda sparringly. They are so much more impactful when you kill the firat stage, only for them to get back up stronger, you always go "oooh wtf?" But in LOP you go into every boff encounter like "ok so fuck this first phase, just get through it asap. The real fight is in the second phase." There is no "omg wtf is happening" moment when almost every single boss has 2 phases. Those are just 2 flaws/nitpicks in an otherwise incredibly fleshed out game. Edit: also, fuck king's flame fuck boy. Fucko had me tilted for hella long.
I don't think away from the formula is a good idea, I love the souls formula it's a subgenre that I enjoy, unfortunately most other soulslikes don't really do the soulslike formula well enough, you say thay there are many soulslikes but how many of them are actually good game I think you count that on a single hand, there are many souls likes but the majority are really bad, that doesn't really translate as oversaturated, the only good souls games are made by Fromsoftwere, Lop is the first actually good one and I think LOP does stand on its own it has its own very unique story, characters, lore and mechanics, it plays the same and its a third person action RPG yes but everything else is different.

I'm enjoying this more than Nioh or Sekiro, which aren't really souls games. The combat mechanics here are definitely similar to Dark Souls. I'd say (25hrs in) its definitely harder then all of them. I have an unholy amount of points in motevity (strength stat) and it's still kinda difficult.
Yeah the enemies in this game have long wind ups but fast (or even instant) delivery of attacks, unlike FromSoft’s enemies that have clear attack animations. That’s why many enemies feel very snappy and floaty instead of smooth and weighty like the ones in FromSoft’s souls games.
I love watching the bosses play the game doing a 16 hit combo while i wait for my turn to hit once doing shitty damage and then rinse repeat. That's good game design. inb4 skill issue

Post your footage of you hitting the Eldest of the black rabbit brotherhood boss more than 5 times in one go and see if you dont get punished for it, because i can guarantee you cant but the boss sure can. I dont know about you but a boss that has the same stature as the player character should be bound to the same rules as me. Also im pretty sure the white lady can parry attacks too

How is hitting the eldest more than 5 times an argument it's a difficult boss you need to find an opening which usually is 1 or 2 hits before you need to start dodging and perrying, the boss would be a joke if he stood there taking 5 hits from my greatsword that is if he survived.

If a game is too different to Fromsoftwere design then why call it a soulslike? This is the greatest soulslike because it feels exactly how a Fromsoftwere game feels while having its own mechanics. Games like Nioh or Remnant are way too different to be called soulslike great games yes but not soulslike. So yes from all the games that tried to imitate the soulslike formula this one in my opinion is the most successful and the most fun to play. Games that are just action rpgs with some soulslike elements are not included.

@outkripper8272 well that's the entire point of the sub genre, the point is to replicate the experience of a souls game but with different setting, world building maybe a different equipment system or leveling system but the whole concept should be the same . in the end it needs to be "souls like" to part of the sub genre, games like Mortal Shell, the Surge, the old and new Lords of the Fallen. And now Lies of P, like can't call a game like hollow knight or blasphemous a "soulslike" because both are Metroidvanias great games and all but they are Metroidvanias. Lies of P while a souls like in entirety it's uniqueness and greatness comes from the fact it implements the concepts very well, the world building is great, the level design is great on bar with Fromsoftwere games, the combat is very responsive and feels just great hit enemies, the art design is great also. Other souls likes fail in these regards because they don't understand what makes souls games so great, Lies of P seems to get it and that's why it's the best soulslike.

There is nowhere that says your definition is true, or even close. Every single game you mentioned is without a doubt some degree of a soulslike. Games can have more than one genre applied to them I dont know where you get this idea that its cut and dry one or the other. A simple google search will identify the problems with that arugment. In regard to your personal opinion, I respect your opinion but quite frankly I disagree. I think there isnt much outside of the general theme that this game has to offer that is somehow unique or interesting. Every other game that you mentioned infact is more interesting and more unique as it doesnt try to be a direct clone. There isnt anything wrong of course with being a direct clone, outside of being an inferior version of the original. Lets take for example, your favorite drink. Lets say you figure out the ingredients the drink is made with, and want to make it yourself. I can almost guarantee that you would still prefer the original to the one you make yourself.
I like this review a lot, I do think you could be more precise in your language tho. FromSoft games are not (just) a pile of systems, a list of nouns. Instead, what defines the Souls genre is the movement between & generated by the continuity expressed in the way all those systems express the same fundamental themes & world building. Souls games (imo) make the most sense if you think of them more in terms of movements, motions, forms, dances which arise out of the pile of systems. A sort of "whole" which ends up incorporating the players own imagination to tell a story greater than the sum of its parts.
Having beat almost every soulslike ever made, I can safely say that Lies of P is better than every last one of them aside from Elden Ring, and I can't say Elden Ring is better either. That's just how amazing LoP is. The best way I can put it is that Dark Souls games lack emotion and soul, ironically enough.

They left out one of the most important aspects of souls. Player OPTIONS FOR OVERCOMING CHALLENGES!!!!! FromSoft always gives its players tons of tools for overcoming challenges. FromSoft wants its players to beat their games. Lies of P's developers only care about their game being the hardest by removing all the options. Wanna overlevel? That's to bad because we are going to make each enemy drop only a tiny bit of ergo so that farming is pointless. Our throwable object do alot of damage don't they? Lol jokes on you. You can only carry a few of each. And on top of that we will give you a NPC summon but they are brain dead and will die in the first minute of every boss fight. You the player are going to beat our game our way or no way at all. I'm in chapter 9 and I have never been this frustrated with a soulslike and I have beaten them all. It desperately needs a patch.
Seems more like you desperately need to improve. There is plenty of ergo if you don't die ever 5 mins, my summons do just fine in a boss fight and usually make it to the very end if not all the way through. It doesn't need a patch at all. I've only got to play around 8 or 9 hours of it and I'm already well into the 5th area. Perfect guarding makes this game pretty easy. I'd say Elden Rings combo monster bosses that attack 15 times in a row are much more punishing than this game

The fact is the developers had one credo when making this game. "We must be harder than FromSoft" I was looking at my trophy list and only 12% have made it to the final chapter on ps5. After fighting Parade Master, I learned to love this game. It definitely grows on you. Definitely a sleeper hit.

I think the closest Soulsborne is Blasphemous. That game got me into the actual Fromsoft games.
Eventually I'll play Lies of P. Maybe in a few years.

I hate the pinpoint tracking most enemies have. Why is dodge even an option when the tracking means it’s mostly parry or nothin.
What about both Surge and Surge 2? The production quality is much lower, but the combat is spot-on.
Havent played Surge 2 unfortunately as i heard it imrpoved on 1. Played 1 and had fun, but I dont think its as good as LoP by a decent amount

I really disagree with this definition of what a Souls-like is. Hell, Sekiro barely counts as one if we're judging by it's similarities to previous titles.
A flawed masterpiece, a diamond in the rough, Lies Of P is an incredible game and easily thee best souls-like so far. There are a couple flaws that I'd like to point out, the first is the lack of a poise system for our character, while the enemies do have poise. The second is that just about EVERY boss, save for a few, all have 2 phases. Now a 2 phase boss fight isn't a bad thing at all, but I feel like they should be used kinda sparringly. They are so much more impactful when you kill the firat stage, only for them to get back up stronger, you always go "oooh wtf?" But in LOP you go into every boff encounter like "ok so fuck this first phase, just get through it asap. The real fight is in the second phase." There is no "omg wtf is happening" moment when almost every single boss has 2 phases. Those are just 2 flaws/nitpicks in an otherwise incredibly fleshed out game.

I don't think away from the formula is a good idea, I love the souls formula it's a subgenre that I enjoy, unfortunately most other soulslikes don't really do the soulslike formula well enough, you say thay there are many soulslikes but how many of them are actually good game I think you count that on a single hand, there are many souls likes but the majority are really bad, that doesn't really translate as oversaturated, the only good souls games are made by Fromsoftwere, Lop is the first actually good one and I think LOP does stand on its own it has its own very unique story, characters, lore and mechanics, it plays the same and its a third person action RPG yes but everything else is different.

I'm enjoying this more than Nioh or Sekiro, which aren't really souls games. The combat mechanics here are definitely similar to Dark Souls. I'd say (25hrs in) its definitely harder then all of them. I have an unholy amount of points in motevity (strength stat) and it's still kinda difficult.

Yeah the enemies in this game have long wind ups but fast (or even instant) delivery of attacks, unlike FromSoft’s enemies that have clear attack animations. That’s why many enemies feel very snappy and floaty instead of smooth and weighty like the ones in FromSoft’s souls games.

I love watching the bosses play the game doing a 16 hit combo while i wait for my turn to hit once doing shitty damage and then rinse repeat. That's good game design. inb4 skill issue
You can counter that with gaurd, perfect gaurd, healing, and upgrading your weapons and skill tree, all of which the bosses can't do.
@@alenezi989a3 Reread my comment because im not talking about guarding parrying or upgrading weapons. Im talking about hitting the boss. you know the thing you do with the attack button .a.k.a R1/RB? Post your footage of you hitting the Eldest of the black rabbit brotherhood boss more than 5 times in one go and see if you dont get punished for it, because i can guarantee you cant but the boss sure can. I dont know about you but a boss that has the same stature as the player character should be bound to the same rules as me. Also im pretty sure the white lady can parry attacks too

How is hitting the eldest more than 5 times an argument it's a difficult boss you need to find an opening which usually is 1 or 2 hits before you need to start dodging and perrying, the boss would be a joke if he stood there taking 5 hits from my greatsword that is if he survived.

@morgannyan2738 thats why you parry and dodge...who wants to fight a boss that stands there and let's you smack it 5 times or more in a row without punishing you. Sounds like you're wanting an easier game. 2 or 3 hits should be about all you can get on a well designed enemy or boss

If a game is too different to Fromsoftwere design then why call it a soulslike? This is the greatest soulslike because it feels exactly how a Fromsoftwere game feels while having its own mechanics. Games like Nioh or Remnant are way too different to be called soulslike great games yes but not soulslike. So yes from all the games that tried to imitate the soulslike formula this one in my opinion is the most successful and the most fun to play. Games that are just action rpgs with some soulslike elements are not included.

@outkripper8272 well that's the entire point of the sub genre, the point is to replicate the experience of a souls game but with different setting, world building maybe a different equipment system or leveling system but the whole concept should be the same . in the end it needs to be "souls like" to part of the sub genre, games like Mortal Shell, the Surge, the old and new Lords of the Fallen. And now Lies of P, like can't call a game like hollow knight or blasphemous a "soulslike" because both are Metroidvanias great games and all but they are Metroidvanias. Lies of P while a souls like in entirety it's uniqueness and greatness comes from the fact it implements the concepts very well, the world building is great, the level design is great on bar with Fromsoftwere games, the combat is very responsive and feels just great hit enemies, the art design is great also. Other souls likes fail in these regards because they don't understand what makes souls games so great, Lies of P seems to get it and that's why it's the best soulslike.
@@alenezi989a3 mate, im glad you like the game, that much is clear. However, it seems you have a complete misunderstanding of what "soulslike" means. There is nowhere that says your definition is true, or even close. Every single game you mentioned is without a doubt some degree of a soulslike. Games can have more than one genre applied to them I dont know where you get this idea that its cut and dry one or the other. A simple google search will identify the problems with that arugment. In regard to your personal opinion, I respect your opinion but quite frankly I disagree. I think there isnt much outside of the general theme that this game has to offer that is somehow unique or interesting. Every other game that you mentioned infact is more interesting and more unique as it doesnt try to be a direct clone. There isnt anything wrong of course with being a direct clone, outside of being an inferior version of the original. Lets take for example, your favorite drink. Lets say you figure out the ingredients the drink is made with, and want to make it yourself. I can almost guarantee that you would still prefer the original to the one you make yourself.

I like this review a lot, I do think you could be more precise in your language tho. FromSoft games are not (just) a pile of systems, a list of nouns. Instead, what defines the Souls genre is the movement between & generated by the continuity expressed in the way all those systems express the same fundamental themes & world building. Souls games (imo) make the most sense if you think of them more in terms of movements, motions, forms, dances which arise out of the pile of systems. A sort of "whole" which ends up incorporating the players own imagination to tell a story greater than the sum of its parts.

Having beat almost every soulslike ever made, I can safely say that Lies of P is better than every last one of them aside from Elden Ring, and I can't say Elden Ring is better either. That's just how amazing LoP is. The best way I can put it is that Dark Souls games lack emotion and soul, ironically enough.

Bloodborne wasn't amazing before old hunters. The main game was just good.
They left out one of the most important aspects of souls. Player OPTIONS FOR OVERCOMING CHALLENGES!!!!! FromSoft always gives its players tons of tools for overcoming challenges. FromSoft wants its players to beat their games. Lies of P's developers only care about their game being the hardest by removing all the options. Wanna overlevel? That's to bad because we are going to make each enemy drop only a tiny bit of ergo so that farming is pointless. Our throwable object do alot of damage don't they? Lol jokes on you. You can only carry a few of each. And on top of that we will give you a NPC summon but they are brain dead and will die in the first minute of every boss fight. You the player are going to beat our game our way or no way at all. I'm in chapter 9 and I have never been this frustrated with a soulslike and I have beaten them all. It desperately needs a patch.

Seems more like you desperately need to improve. There is plenty of ergo if you don't die ever 5 mins, my summons do just fine in a boss fight and usually make it to the very end if not all the way through. It doesn't need a patch at all. I've only got to play around 8 or 9 hours of it and I'm already well into the 5th area. Perfect guarding makes this game pretty easy. I'd say Elden Rings combo monster bosses that attack 15 times in a row are much more punishing than this game

The fact is the developers had one credo when making this game. "We must be harder than FromSoft" I was looking at my trophy list and only 12% have made it to the final chapter on ps5. It's in the single digits for beating the game. So your little I didn't have any problems is just bullshit and I name you liar.
