_The Boy and the Heron’s_ win makes this the 2nd Anime, 2nd Internationally animated and 2nd Traditional Hand-Drawn film along with Miyazaki’s second Oscar win after _Spirited Away._ Not to mention that this is the first PG-13 animated film to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature and literally the film’s win is a huge game changer and a reminder to everyone that Animation is a Medium and Artform not a "Genre for Kids" so Guillermo Del Toro said it perfectly last year, that Animation is ready to take the next step. Also who knows, _Boy and the Heron_ could not only open the door for other Animated Studios such as Disney, Pixar, Warner Bros., Universal/Illumination, DreamWorks Animation, etc. to do more Traditional Hand Drawn animated films (in Disney and DreamWorks Animation’s case) but it could open the doors for more Mature Animated films in the PG-13 and/or R rating range outside of the G or PG rating.
It's the second completely internationally animated film, but third film with international animation, the second film being Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2006).

I think a alternative contender is lord of the rings war of ruhhim since the academy loves lotr franchise and if it end up good maybe it will win
Miya-Zacky never fails to deliver! But for real, I’m finally glad to see that Ghibli studios won a second Oscar. their work is not ordinary Pixar slop. While Disney is crumbling apart on its own self-absorbance, ghibli studio is still trying to enhance its creations. And tbh, I can hardly think of any studio that can rival Ghibli studios in terms of its atmosphere and tranquility that such animation provides. It’s just pure immaculate art
@@DrAngelKins That's definitely not true. We literally had two American films, Puss in Boots 2 and Spiderverse 2 within the last two years that had brilliant visually emotional depth.
@@imnotsqiddy I can see the emotional part - and I love Puss in Boots 2 - but I fail to see the depth. I saw complex ideas being mitigated in a rather simpler way with the Wolf and Puss, which is expected and sometimes, needed from mass-produced animations, yet it does not gives them depth just because the subject is complex. Miyazaki tackles more abstract, matured ideas on emotional development and growth, rather complex feelings, and never belittles, sugarcoats or hinders them or their ambiguity - regardless of the targeted audience. He often creates a vastly rich visual world to support them and make them accessible to everyone, rather than using simple visual metaphors and somewhat reductive dialogue lines. That is true depth, imo.
@@DrAngelKinsno, American TV and cinema have exceptions but it’s full of tropes, big dialogue. Even independent cinema isn’t quite there with British film etc. The non-linear time structure of Ghibli adds depth bc not every scene serves an action driven plot. The visual depth it’s that Ghibli shows inner worlds more through symbols much like Kurosawa did. There’s exceptions in American cinema. David Lynch.
I haven't watched this movie yet, but I have heard the mixed reputation. The younger generation (on their 20's, for example) don't understand the message and the older generation (over 40's) are deeply moved by it. Very interesting. Congrats for Studio Ghibli !
I honestly never understood the arguments and complaints from everyone that _Across the Spider-Verse_ was "robbed” and should’ve won the Oscar over _Boy and the Heron_ it’s literally very reminiscent when the majority got upset and wanted _How to Train Your Dragon 2_ to win the Oscar over _Big Hero 6_ or _Puss in Boots: The Last Wish_ over _Del Toro’s Pinocchio._ Let me be real to the majority of you, their hasn’t been *ANY* animated sequel that has won the Oscar outside the _Toy Story_ franchise which won Best Animated Feature through _Toy Story 3-4._ While _Shrek, The Incredibles,_ and _Into the Spider-Verse_ won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, yet their sequels (Shrek 2, Incredibles 2, and now Across the Spider-Verse) who got nominated didn’t go on to win the Oscar with the _Incredibles 2_ losing to _Into the Spider-Verse,_ and now _Across the Spider-Verse_ losing to _The Boy and the Heron._ Secondly, I had a feeling _Across the Spider-Verse_ wasn’t going to win the Oscar because it didn’t win the Golden Globe and especially the BAFTA for Best Animated Feature which did hindered its chances of winning the Oscar, along with the fact 15 out of the 18 Animated films that won the BAFTA (except The LEGO Movie, Kubo and Klaus) wound up winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, so the BAFTA’s are 82%-83% when it comes to Animated films winning the Oscar, along with the fact the previous Oscar winners for Best Animated feature in the last 3 years also won a Golden Globe and especially the BAFTA respectively: _Soul, Encanto,_ and _Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio._

It’s disgusting to me how Many people are saying spiderverse should’ve won for animation when that animation was the product of major crunch and abuse of the animators due to massive rewrites that lord and miller did for the story (the original teaser for the movie shows a fully animated scene where miles falls through pav’s dimension and is then attacked by Spider-Man 2099, a scene that NEVER appears in the movie). This is for Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo, From Up On Poppy Hill, The Wind Rises, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya and all the Studio Ghibli flims that deserved to win.
¡¡¡BRAVO!!! Long live Ghibli.
YAY THE SECOND 2D ANIMATION WINNER FOR ANIMATED FEATURE!
Declaration of Studio Ghibli film as an Academy Award winner was the best part for me of this year's ceremony
spirit away he won
boy of heron he won
fix he's GOAT
congrats sir, you deserve it 👏
This is the animation equivalent of clubbing baby seals. None of the other entrants had a chance in hell of beating it.
Wonderful film! Miyazaki one of the best film makers of all time!
Fair, but this was definitely one of Miyazaki 's worst films. The pacing was all over the place, the story left unfinished threads and many moments were solved by extreme conveniences.... I love Ghibli but this film got graded on a curve.
Spider verse did the clubbing m8. Robbed af.
@@Kxray1 Agreed. The early Gwen portion alone was so impressive- converging emotion, music, ambience, color, and dialogue alongside beautiful animation...
@@imnotsqiddy but spider ver 2 is unfinished too
They definitely deserve it!😍
Congratulatios Miyasaki sensei and all the team.
Last year: Stop-motion animation
This year: Traditional 2D animation
Next year better be the newest animation style, like The Wild Robot.
I would love dreamworks winning again since inside out 2 seems more close to other pixar films rather toy story 4 case but im still optimistic if wild robot turns miss or hit.
Aside from being the best animator the world has ever seen and a genius, Myiazaki is a hero! Well deserved! The movie is utterly brilliant!
2D will always remain supreme & always aged better
They are such masters. The movies have emotional depth American cinema can’t ever achieve !
What are you talking about? DreamWorks has dozens of films that have emotional value, even Disney.
Emotional depth is different for everyone. Japanese masters the visual emotional depth and American masters the diagolue emotional depth.
Definitely they deserve it❤
Thanks Mr. Miyazaki and his team to give us those beautiful gifts of our life. Those beautiful films
I haven't watched this movie yet, but I have heard the mixed reputation. The younger generation (on their 20's, for example) don't understand the message and the older generation (over 40's) are deeply moved by it. Very interesting. Congrats for Studio Ghibli !
big win for 2d animation and for Studio Ghibli
미야자키 감독님 축하합니다! 당연한 결과입니다
I honestly never understood the arguments and complaints from everyone that _Across the Spider-Verse_ was "robbed” and should’ve won the Oscar over _Boy and the Heron_ it’s literally very reminiscent when the majority got upset and wanted _How to Train Your Dragon 2_ to win the Oscar over _Big Hero 6_ or _Puss in Boots: The Last Wish_ over _Del Toro’s Pinocchio._ Let me be real to the majority of you, their hasn’t been *ANY* animated sequel that has won the Oscar outside the _Toy Story_ franchise which won Best Animated Feature through _Toy Story 3-4._ While _Shrek, The Incredibles,_ and _Into the Spider-Verse_ won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, yet their sequels (Shrek 2, Incredibles 2, and now Across the Spider-Verse) who got nominated didn’t go on to win the Oscar with the _Incredibles 2_ losing to _Into the Spider-Verse,_ and now _Across the Spider-Verse_ losing to _The Boy and the Heron._
Secondly, I had a feeling _Across the Spider-Verse_ wasn’t going to win the Oscar because it didn’t win the Golden Globe and especially the BAFTA for Best Animated Feature which did hindered its chances of winning the Oscar, along with the fact 15 out of the 18 Animated films that won the BAFTA (except The LEGO Movie, Kubo and Klaus) wound up winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, so the BAFTA’s are 82%-83% when it comes to Animated films winning the Oscar, along with the fact the previous Oscar winners for Best Animated feature in the last 3 years also won a Golden Globe and especially the BAFTA respectively: _Soul, Encanto,_ and _Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio._
This is so awesome!
Well deserved to a master artist & visionary! 😊
I’m so happy for them! 🥰 I love the toy that he’s carrying ✨I want it too🥺
Congratulation Sensei Miyazaki, thank you for your fantastic works of decades!😊
WELL DESERVED WIN 🎉
Ahhhh im so proud of ghibli. Thats forever my childhood right there ♡
2d animated movies are the real thing🙌❤️
Absolutely deserved! ❤
I tip my hat to you Across the Spider-Verse, but as an anime lover/fan, I applaud Studio Ghibli for winning a second Oscar after literally 2 decades.
Much better than the other nominees, well deserved.
Before any of you shout out "SpiderMan: SpiderVerse was robbed," have you even seen The Boy And The Heron?
I love Miyazaki but The Boy and the Heron is not his best film
Across the Spider-Verse is deserving winner
@@dariussalepetru6770 Spiderman across The spiderverse didn't deserve the Oscar at all. The boy and The heron, Nimona and Robot dreams were far superior. Spiderman into The spiderverse had a great Animation, but at the same time it told us a great story and that gave it the Oscar in 2019, but the sequel Spideman across The spiderverse had a great Animation like the previous one, but it almost doesn't tell you anything about the story, the only good thing was the ending.
@@dariussalepetru6770Your opinion is legit because you've seen it. It's those who haven't seen it but still whine that it was robbed.
@@dariussalepetru6770 Your opinion is legitimate because you saw it. Those that have not seen it but shout that SpiderVerse was robbed have no reason to whine.
Excellent speech and congratulations 😀.
Congratulations to The Boy & The Heron joining a list that includes Shrek, Spirited Away, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Wall-E, UP, Toy Story 3, Frozen, Inside Out, Zootopia, Coco, Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse, Soul, & Encanto as the films the academy got right.
This is awesome! If anyone deserves another Oscar, it's Miyazaki 😀 I think this is a big win for animation in general. It's not often that a non Hollywood movie wins this category (even though they are usually great too!) animation should be taken more seriously because it is a beautiful art form ❤️ I hope we get to see less mainstream animated movies have as much of a chance as the blockbusters in this category 😊
Sensei Miyazaki, you are a living legend also with All The Team
How are there already idiots in the comment section? Have you watched the video? The COO said Miyazaki can't come because of his old age.
Also, Miyazaki didn't attend the last time he won because of a protest against US involvement in Iraq. Not because he didn't think he'd win.
He's Hayao Miyazaki for christ sake, He's the GOAT
Miyazaki sensei spent his life creating works to raise awareness of war, nuclear power, environmental pollution. That is his ultimate message that he wants people to see in his works
And thus, a temporary (hopefully permanent) end to Disney constantly winning has happened, we did it boys
I wonder if inside out 2 could win the next year but consider is a sequel that does have sorta similar plot i can them passing around of this. Maybe the wild robot or lord of the rings or even another international could win the next year
His 2nd Oscar win since Spirited Away
2nd anime movie to win and miyazaki got them both. Legend
This film went out award hunting
It’s disgusting to me how Many people are saying spiderverse should’ve won for animation when that animation was the product of major crunch and abuse of the animators due to massive rewrites that lord and miller did for the story (the original teaser for the movie shows a fully animated scene where miles falls through pav’s dimension and is then attacked by Spider-Man 2099, a scene that NEVER appears in the movie). Should the animators be praised? Yes, 100%. Do I want to see lord and miller getting rewarded for making a project that abused the mental health of multiple talented creators? *absolutely not*
You are acting like Japanese animation studios aren't crunch incarnate.
Spider-verse part 2 ( across the spiderverse) is very good and while i very much agree that the employers were treat terrible. The same stuff also applies in Anime work place's
@@buragi5441oh they are, MAPPA for example. but ive heard nothin about ghibli. that doesnt mean it DIDNT happen, but id rather the thing that i dont know if it had crunch or not 100% win, over the thing i KNOW had crunch and workplace abuse
Crunching is standard practice in Japan, hence why you don't hear about it much, they don't raise a sting because they just accept it.@@mr_blank4413
Across the spider verse is worst movie ever because scandals
Remember Academy: ANIMATION IS NOT JUST FOR CHILDREN
And funny because boy and the heron is rated pg-13
OMG well deserved ❤
Best animated movie last year. But im surprised that they didnt rob him this time
spiderverse left the chat
Un gran logro para Colombia!!!
