My Mamod Minor 2 and the smell of meths will forever remind me of Christmas 1958. It now sits in a cupboard, all polished up, but unable to run due to pin holes in the boiler after 66 years. A treasured possession. Thank you Mamod for all the happiness you gave so many over the years.
Between 1984 and 2004 I had 8 Mamod steam locos, about 2 dozen wagons and coaches as well as quite a bit of track (And, not to forget, the smallest of the steam engines). I visited the Mamod factory when it was in Slough. Owing to moves, first to the UK and then to Cyprus, I had to sell everything. I had a lot of fun with these locos, and I have good memories (especially of the 2 locos which I had converted to 0-6-0 wheel arrangement. They worked extremely well.
Me and my dad own a traction engine and steam lorry from mamod and luckily they both still can run. When they can't run, they'll still be kept as a treasured belonging to me. Thank you mamod for the fun we've had
Best birthday present I ever received. Got the TE1a for my 10th birthday. It is still in my garage and every so often I fire it up and it has a run on the patio. Sorry to see the demise of Mamod and I hope the workforce get fixed up soon!
Really gutted to hear this! I've had my TE1a since 1971 (runs on meth spirit - awesome smells!) and I restored it a couple of years ago. It is in prefect running order and looks almost new, and I hope to keep it running, most especially for my grandson (still one year old sadly) to enjoy when he is old enough, just like I did with my son, his dad. Thank you Mamod for enriching all stages of our lives with your amazing machines!
I had an SR1, way back in the 1970s, it was 2nd hand and how I loved that thing. I had it JUST so, and you could leave it steaming up with the cylinder block JUST nearly aligned, so the pressure would allow a tiny bit of steam just to edge the flywheel round and off it would go, apparently of its own volition.. This required METICULOUS maintenance of course.. May I wish you every success with saving this historic company. You may be able to get help from English Heritage or some such body, after all, there can't be many people of a certain age who DON'T remember with fondness one of these excellent and highly educational machines or glorious toys. ❤️🌟👍
Many happy memories of my Traction Engine. Fuelled by meths, I can still see my mum chasing me along the hall, stamping on the trail of burning fuel before it burned the carpet. Happy days.
Very sad news and a great loss to the steam world. It was such a good way for children to learn about steam power.back in the 70s I pestered my father to have the traction engine model, but I had to wait till he was sure I would not burn the house down!🤣 I still have the engine hear on the shelf🙂
@@teescottageguyproductions so they are moving to a new workshop? I understand that they had some trouble with the fuel tablets but didn't think the trouble was as big as that. I was planning on getting the other version of their steam car or the other traction engine trailer the next time I visited my dad
Restored an early traction engine a few years ago. Lovely thing, could not fire it and destroy the paint! Pride of place on display now in the dining room. What a very great shame it has come to an end, but absolute credit to you for trying so very hard.
I still have a Mamod Steam Traction engine from many many years ago along with the stamped and postmarked box it came in. It is my pride and joy. My wife said who are you going to leave to in your will? My reply was, I am not leaving it I am taking it with me !
A sad day , I have a collection of mamod steam units , my first one was a traction engine in 1975 , today I have 12 steam engines from mamod , but today the young are not interested the computer and games have taken over , 50 years of steam models running , I hope some one keeps it going ,
I can remember my Dad bringing home one of their traction engines back in 2004 that he was planning on giving my Grandpa as a special birthday gift. while he steamed the engine a few times my Grandpa was more interested in classic cars than steam engines so he ended up giving it to me as I was interested in steam power.
The government seems to have plenty of money to invest in foreign companies, small company like this should be looked after as a heritage and skills learning center. But hopefully you can manage to come back producing these fantastic models for another 75 years at least 😊 👍
Exactly right. Mamod is part of British heritage, therefore they're deserving of external help, either governmental or quango.. I think they must be made aware!
Sad to hear there will be no more Mamod after all these years. They were my favourite toy. I saved to buy some and the Traction engine and steam wagon were presents. I sometimes used a pint of meths over two days and after steaming cleaned them up before putting them back in the box. I still have them all except the Minor1 that I took apart to use the boiler in a ship TE1, SR1, SE3, ME3, SW1 and the 3 railway locomotives first made which I made a meths burner for. I did not like the fuel tablets. The twin cylinder engine was the last to be steamed. I should get them all in steam again
I have a te1 named garry and a sr1 and a te1a that i got on my birthday and they all stand strong to this day (edit cant forget the trailer and canopy)
I got a stationary twin engine for Xmass in the 1960 and still have her, I had numerous hours of enjoyment. Sad times to see it sleep - but Mamod will steam again. Thanks for the lovely toys
I had an s3 sold it at a steam rally to a dealer I’m sure there’s a way forward for you work from home and sell on line sir All the best thanks for trying to save a great product😊😊😊😮
I'd always wanted one when I was a child, I hope you can keep the brand going in some form, It's a shame that you are having to close due to your landlord greed and a stupid government policies
there must be some one out there that would buy the name and rights to this company , the name is part of the english language ,it stands with names like dinky, matchbox, lego ,etc
@@teescottageguyproductions No just a keepsake. In the 80s I wanted to sell it to by a guitar effect pedal & my dad told me a guy at his work wanted it so he took it to work & brought me home the cash. But when I was clearing the house following his death in 2004 I found it in a bag hidden in his wardrobe, clearly he felt I should keep it & had just given me the money. I’d like one day for my son to have it.
@ATVHOLICS oh wow that’s an amazing story. Yes absolutely keep it as a family heirloom! I got my first steam engine in 2017 when I was 10, my grandad found an old SE1 in the garage and we fired it up and he gave it to me. I still have it. Theres plenty of videos of it on my channel including of its recent restoration
Tragic sign of the times like stamp collecting and now probably coins , Ai and disposable non reparable non recyclable cars, overpopulated boring world we will have
I’d really love to but it’s over 3 hours away from where I am in Darlington so it’s a long journey. I might be able to but I doubt it. If I can’t a mate of mine is going to take some videos for me to use

That’s a brilliant story. The smell of Meths burning always brings back memories for me too
Thank you for doing everything you could to keep this iconic brand going.
Another sad day for British engineering.

Every school should have bought one and kept them going
Another great video James albeit a sad one.
It's such a sad state of affairs for all steam enthusiast.
I have several Mamod models and enjoy them all.
Thanks!! Yeah it’s a very sad time

Very sad 😪
I've got two Mamods, I had a lot of fun with them when I was a kid.
Sorry to hear that. Thank you for trying.
Exelant video
It's a real shame ain't it
Tis an end of an era
I was shocked when i saw the announcement
Yeah it’s a big shame
Such a pity.... I hope that one day you will be able to produce these models again.... 🙂
Yeah it’s an awful situation
How very sad to see the end of Mamod Steam Models.

I'm sorry to hear this sad news, James. You tried hard to save it.
I’m not involved with Mamod I’m just an enthusiast but yes they’ve tried so hard
@@teescottageguyproductions It's a terrible shame.
I'm pretty sure the one I had was the SP 3. ( late 60's) UK . So sad now I sold it for $ 5 Australia in about 1973.
It was a stupid mistake.
I had one of the single cylinder static engines in the 1970's, spent hours running it. Such a shame a classic name may disappear
Oh wow!
Sorry to see your company pushed out by external forces!!
It’s not my company but yes it’s incredibly sad
Should have found new premises, and if the workers who had to walk to work didn’t want to tough .wouldnt be that difficult to find new workers .
Perhaps something could be arranged with Stewart, or Hemingway?
How sad wonderful toys
there must be some one out there that would buy the name and rights to this company , the name is part of the english language ,it stands with names like dinky, matchbox, lego ,etc
I don’t know, as far as I know they aren’t going to sell the brand or company
Does this day take place every year?
The open day? Not anymore now they’ve closed
Very sad that this company came to an end.
Yes indeed it is
I have a TE1 from 50+ years ago. Where do I get parts?
Mamod still have a parts website and parts are available from other companies like Milbury
My uncle bought me the steam roller for my birthday in the 1970s & left the price tag on it - £7.25
Oh wow that’s amazing!

@ATVHOLICS that’s brilliant! Do you still run it?
