    If it sounds easy, but it involves a 486-class machine, write off a whole evening anyway!
    It's always a wonderful domino effect of weird config file issues and driver fun.

    • @CanuckGod
      @CanuckGod 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's definitely nostalgic, though I can't recall whether it was fun nostalgia, or "beat your head repeatedly against the desk" nostalgia. Mid 90's teenage me would have probably answered the latter, though there was a sense of relief when you got config.sys and autoexec.bat playing nice with whatever you were trying to install.

    I loved this video. Yes, you forgot a few things, but you didn't hide it, and you figured it out faster than I would have 20 years ago. I started out with Windows 3.11 and Windows 95a, using Windows NT server 4.0. Those were such fun days. You actually had to think about what you were doing. Now the newer versions of Windows do it all for you. The early days were so much better in my opinion. Sure there was a bunch of stuff we didn't have, Google, youtube, smartphones, wireless networking, but it was just... fun. Seeing windows 3.11 again brought me right back to when I first saw it in about 1993 on an IBM ps/1 486sx. Thanks man!

    Most of these old ISA ethernet cards are NE2000 compatible, so trying the NE2000 driver usually works.

    Very nostalgic this. Windows 3.11 was the first OS I networked and connected to the internet. Before I discovered Linux. I recall my local ISP asking why I was not using Windows 95, but they copied Trumpet Winsock onto a floppy for me and it worked fine with my 14.4k modem

    • @CanuckGod
      @CanuckGod 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Only had 4 MB of RAM when I first got online in '96, so I kinda went back and forth between using Win95 and Win3.11, but Trumpet Winsock was a lifesaver :)

  • @ruadeil_zabelin

    I did windows 311 networking last week and it surprised me how easy it was. I had a 3com pci card, found the drivers online. Installed them in 3.11 and it worked first try! I had to enable smb1.0 on windows 10 and then I could access my files. It was amazing

    • @ruadeil_zabelin
      @ruadeil_zabelin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also to get it working on Windows 10 without a password you need to change a group policy setting (computer config -> administrative templates -> network -> lanman workstation -> Enable insecure guest logons).
      And ofcourse you have to add/install SMB1.0 under additional windows software.

    I have a networked Windows 98 machine on a crummy wireless card and yet Windows 3.1 has a batter time with DHCP than 98 does as my machine chokes up when trying to get it's ip. Setting the IP to static makes everything alot smoother

    Druaga1
    When you format a fresh hard disk, you should put the /S parameter on it, this will transfer whatever system you booted with as part of the format process.
    Another parameter for format is /V which prompts it to ask you for a volume label, like WEED!
    Also you can put /B to set aside space for the system files in case you are not sure that you want to actually copy them and space is tight.
    And /? will always give you the parameter help.

    I'm going to give you a huge ass protip on Windows 3.1/3.11 networking: Turn off PnP on your network card. It's not so much that Windows cannot use PnP, it is that a lot of ISA hardware has a really, really, REALLY hard time managing PnP settings. Windows 95 kind of fixes this, but I would still disable PnP for the network card. Most cards will have a setting in the driver config or card config to do this, then you'll manually assign an IRQ and IO Port.

    Windows 3.11 and 9x and even DOS can see linux samba shares (as long as there are no passwords), so if you make some sort of linux NAS you can transfert files to a new system with the intermediary linux computer (because newer computers can also browse linux samba shares). I'm using this with a raspberry pi at the moment and it works great

      Frozen yellow garden hose. Even better, the taps can only be done every 2.5 meters (or multiples thereof, like 5 or 7.5 or 10, but no less or no more) else the reflections from the taps can go into phase and totally screw your signal with echo.

      @CanuckGod 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was about to say the same thing; when I saw that, I was like "Umm... it's winipcfg". To be fair, at an earlier point, and since XP it's been ipconfig, and I only slightly remember there being a difference, but yeah, different command.

    • @simontay4851

      I wish XP and newer still had the winipcfg GUI program that 9x has. ipconfig is command line only. Clicking buttons in winipcfg to release/renew your IP is quicker than having to type it in command prompt.

    You should in theory be able to get it sharing with windows all the way up to Windows 10. You just need to re-enable SMB v1 in windows 10 (it was disabled by default due to massive security issues) and then you can use that. I doubt you would be able to get a newer version of SMB on to windows 3.11... You could also try something else like FTP? Would stop you needing a man in the middle computer and Explorer supports FTP since about Windows Vista (possibly even 98? I cant remember)
    I also think it's hilarious that people forget how long computers used to take to start up. I remember getting to work, turning on my computer and then going to make a coffee, have a chat, generally piss about and then return to my machine to watch it finish booting.

    Neat. You should be able to share all the way to Win10, but you'll probably need to re-enable SMB 1.0 Client in Win10 which was recently disabled for security reasons.
