    I love the blue paint on the inside. It really makes the wood visible and yet it is very soft on the eyes.

    Should be mentioned to look for the ippc code when choosing which pallets to use. Anything stamped (HT,KD or DH) is safe, anything with a MB (methyl-bromide) is not. If the pallet is not stamped it should not be used. It wasn't until 2003 in the US that it became standard practice to not use arsenic in pressure treatment of even residential grade lumber. Not a guarantee that it could be unsafe, but with sanding and cutting you would definitely want to take some extra precautions. No troll, just adding some constructive info. Still a great build and one of my favorite channels. -Chris

    • @Iliketomakestuff
      @Iliketomakestuff  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +effreek It's definitely something you need to be aware of when working with pallets, but it's also one of those things that I can't mention every time I use them in a video. There has been quite a bit of discussion around it on TH-cam, so I didn't feel the need to rehash it. Generally though, I only grab them if they're marked HT (heat treated)

    Pretty cool, you could also use your X-carve to make the side panels with handle holes. This would give a possibility of intricate top curve shapes. And take away the need to chisel a straight line.

    Again a nice little project nicely achieved in a nice little video.
    I just noticed the potentially dangerous kickback effect at 0:35, I will think about it when I get my own cutting table O_O
    +I Like To Make Stuff Were you aware of that risk at the moment you used that sled ? I suppose this is related to the sled...

    • @Barrysworkshop
      @Barrysworkshop 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alexandre EYLER Good eye. That happened so quickly, I missed seeing it at first. Notice that Bob was wisely leaning out of harms way. :D
      There are two schools of thought on blade height. Bob has kept the blade just above the workpiece, with the idea that there's less dangerous blade sticking up to shear off appendages. With the blade lower, there's a bit more chance for kickback because the horizontal angles. The other school says to set it higher so that the leading edge is cutting closer to straight down and the trailing edge is closer to straight up, reducing kickback risk a bit. It's a trade-off, either way.

    • @AlexandreEYLER
      @AlexandreEYLER 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Barry's Workshop So there is no "best way" of doing it...
      In some videos I saw people recommending to set blade height never more than 3 millimeters higher than the workpiece.
      But some other "older" woodworkers prefer have the blade quite high...
      As you say, Bob was in a secure position, so I guess he knows the risk :)

    • @alsanova

      +Alexandre EYLER I noticed that as well, replayed few times, look like he's aware of it and kept himself out of the way? **zip!** table nice and clean, ready for next cut lol :D

      +jumpleadsx2 I'm a former cabinet maker with more hours on the tablesaw than I can count. I've been using the table saw both professionally and as a hobbyist for over 40 years. I say that not to impress you, but to let you know that I do have some experience with this topic. Please keep in mind that the section of the video you're discussing is sped up quite a lot. It's not as dangerous as it looks. Agreed - it looks like that edge Bob was trimming off shot out of there at extremely high speed, but I doubt that really was the case. With the jig placed against the fence, the waste being trimmed off has room to fall away from the blade as it's cut off. That rarely, if ever, leads to a piece of waste coming off the blade at high enough velocity to hurt anyone. I guess it could happen, but in over 40 years of using the tablesaw, I've never seen it happen. Kickback, on the other hand, is an extremely dangerous condition, and it is a very real thing - I've seen it first hand, and it's scary as hell to even witness, let alone experience. It happens, however, when the waste is trapped between the blade and an obstruction (like the fence or a jig) that forces it back into the blade, where it is then violently thrown back in the direction of the blade's rotation at high velocity. The jig Bob uses allows the waste to fall away from the blade - there's nothing else there to trap it or force it back into the blade. The video shows that the waste can get pulled backward (and that's quite common) but it's moving at such a low velocity that even if it did hit you, you may or may not even notice it. BUT! BUT! BUT! Having said all of that, you're all correct - stand to one side, out of "the line of fire" and you'll be much better off. Part of the training I got on the tablesaw when I first learned how to use it was just that - positioning yourself so that you're not in line with the piece being cut in case the worst happens. In essence, I'm saying that the jig Bob used is perfectly safe PROVIDED that you use common sense and follow the normal safety procedures that you would follow any other time you use the table saw. Time to be serious here - if you don't know what those procedures are, learn them. Take a woodworking course at a local community college or something. Classes are much cheaper than a trip to the emergency room (even if you have insurance) and you'll be taught how to use the tools safely. Plus, you'll have full access to a complete workshop - a win for everyone.

    I see a lot of people using spray lacquer because it dries fast. I like lacquer but I hate the fumes. lacquer thinner is volatile. it evaporates so fast its explosive. Shellac if thinned properly dries just as fast and the thinner is alcohol. Alcohol is a lot less explosive. the other advantage to shellac is shellac re-wets the previous application so when you are done you have a single layer not multiple layers. you need a compressor and a small spray gun. but if you already have a compressor all you need is a detail spray gun. Harbor Freight sells a pretty good HVLP detail gun for like $16

      +Usman Qamar You could build this project with about $100 in basic tools (hand plane, jig saw, hand saw, sand paper). His tools shown (table saw, band saw, miter saw, drill press, planer, belt sander) probably amount to about $3000 new. I felt the same way before I got started a year ago, thinking, "I'll never be able to get anything done unless I have all of these tools to start with." I finally decided to just get started and bought a used table saw. Over the past year I have collected all of the tools I need (from birthday presents, Christmas, or finding them used online), but I would have never imagined that they would have amassed so quickly! So don't feel discouraged, start somewhere!

    I'm working on a huge serving tray to give as a christmas present to my parents, it's about 1 meter long and the handles are just more curvy than the ones on the video. the only problem is that the only tools i have are a drill, a sander and a jigsaw so the thing took 6 hours already and i'm not even done

    Do you have the plans for the sled that you used at the beginning? I do not have a joiner and I have some reclaimed wood that I have been wanting to work with.

    hey Bob i think you and the rest of the TH-cam woodworkers should have a competition then get viewers to vote. that would be awesome to watch

    I'm making a tabletop out of pallets but the plan is for the table to be in hinges from the wall on one side and ropes on the other side to create a lot of space when folded up but I want a solid surface underneath the pallets to glue and nail them onto but I'm not sure what wood to use, if anyone could help I'd really appreciate it, much thanks

    I really like what you've done with the inside coloured faces but are you not bothered about the nail holes on the outside? Or is that just all part of the rustic look?

    can confirm that spray lacquer is very good on wood with a nice grain. used it on some oak that I had stuck together and turned on the lathe to make a shaft for a lamp. Looks shiny and smooth to the touch

    Bob, your videos are always such a pleasure to watch. Nice job. Great editing man. :) How is the arcade machine going?
    BTW, I love the new end card. Nice detail.

      +RetroWeld Thanks Douglas! I always appreciate the encouragement :) Arcade is going well, but it's a big project so it'll take a while to even get the first video for it finished. It's definitely moving along though (and taking up most of my shop)
      Thanks! My designer (who made my logo) is working on some new video assets for me, and that new end card is the first one.. I really like it!

    Nice job Bob! The wood looks so amazing at 4:00 it's sort of insane hahaha I'm totally doing this for craft fairs next summer. Keep the content coming, I'm hooked!

      +Rivertown Woodcraft Awesome! Go for it! When I've made them in the past, to sell, I've batched them which saves some time. For example, glue up 4 or 5 panels at once.. cut them all to size at once, cut the sides at once, etc. That just cuts down on setup/switching time. Good luck!

      +I Like To Make Stuff Totally, I need to get that sort of thing down before I start making stuff to sell. Thanks man!
