    I first watched this in 2018 and before I had ever made a tray. After watching 3 times and seeing the wonderful reaction from his mother, I made one as a test unit, gave it to a dear friend as a gift and she loved it. Then made a tray with all the different colors as a memorial to our daughter who we lost to cancer. Since that time I have made many trays in this style and different styles. Some were gifts, some sold, but it was this video that taught me and pushed me on to make them and increase my woodworking abilities. Thank you so much Michael.

    I loved the end of the video. So cute with your mother saying thank you. That comment made the made the serving tray project so rewarding. Great serving tray too! I am going to make a similar project for my sister!

    Nice design well done. The last couple of minutes of the video is perhaps not the only reason we do this stuff, but it is right up near the top. How come everybody's scrap always looks so much better then mine?

      yeah same all the stuff i can get is rotten

    • @MichaelAlm
      @MichaelAlm  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! And I agree its really nice to gift your work. As for the scrap, I go by the cabinet shops in my city and hunt through the scrap bins pretty frequently. It tends to be a lot of thin strips, but they’re great for projects like this.

    Awesome colours - Love it!
    Just a tip - when making the handle - drill the 2 far sides with the forstner bits then use a jigsaw and finish up with some sanding - will be much faster!

      Yeah, the music is an annoying distraction. It adds nothing to an otherwise good video.

    • @Raichelli
      @Raichelli 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is annoying is people like you taking time to write a negative comment! FYI if you didn't know you have a volume control on your computer , use it if the music bothers you!

  • @Slovenianwoodworker

    Nice looking tray. Nice colors.
    I hope handles will hold long time.
    Due the grain direction and size it's possible to brake.
    Any way nice work. Cheers

    • @MichaelAlm
      @MichaelAlm  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Slovenian Woodworker thank you! I totally agree about the handles, they aren’t super strong. But i figure if the survive me tossing them around while sanding and gluing, then they should last for a bit. Thanks for watching

      Michael Alm That often is good test. It if survive my handling as I'm not that gentle guy therfore it will survive normal use top:-)

      Adding some biscuits to the end joints would strengthen the handles. Just throwing that out there for others to benefit if they attempt such a project. Love the graduated color choice.

    One minor suggestion, put some dowels or do some king of joinery for the bottom. With just glue it won’t be a lifetime gift it will get 10ish Year’s give or take , depending on the care it gets . But with dowels or screws hidden by plugs will last a lot longer

    I would love to make a tray like this or even a butcher block cutting board, but I don't have all of the fancy woodworking equipment that you do here. I also have a kitchen cart that I picked up online. I want to refinish it and either make a new butcher block top for it or sand down the one thats on it since its damaged. I hoped to use it for extra counter space and for chopping veggies and things. I wish there was a place that people like me could go and rent woodworking equipment. BTW, what kind of oil did you put on the wood???

    • @MichaelAlm
      @MichaelAlm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. I know it's a challenge to get your hands on equipment. It's taken mw 12 years to collect the tools in my shop. The oil is mineral oil. It's food safe and you can buy it at the grocery store.

    An absolutely stunning tray. However I would be a tiny be worried about the handles being held on with just wood glue. Is it strong enough to hold a pot of tea and everything that goes with it, after the tray has been washed and wiped down a few times. Or did you use screws to secure the handles, but it wasn’t in the video. I’m a mum and a worrywart I’m afraid.
