    Full Run: 21:18 with world record just after.
    BTW I know we were talking about quantum computers and stuff but if at least every other comment in here isn't "O-oooooooooo AAAAE-A-A-I-A-U- JO-oooooooooooo AAE-O-A-A-U-U-A- E-eee-ee-eee AAAAE-A-E-I-E-A-JO-ooo-oo-oo-oo EEEEO-A-AAA-AAAAO" I'm going to be very disappointed.

    Speedrunning is a collaborative competition. Most runners are happy when other people run the same game as them and get good times, not when only they get a WR in isolation with secret strats. There's shared enthusiasm for the games and a desire to have everyone on an even playing field with knowledge.

    Oh a note on speedrunning being competitive. I think a lot of it has to do with speedrunning being a very varied thing, there´s a lot of ways to speedrun. Sharing strats and skips is a way to not only be a part of something you love, with other people that care for the same thing, but also a way to keep relevant even if you don´t have the fastest time "Shoutouts this this guy for finding that strat"-kind of thing.
    Also finding, and sharing cool stuff you find in a game encourages other people to pick up the same game, most runners want more people to be interested in the game they´re running, rather than being on top of a leaderboard all alone. Sorry for tldr material;)

    • @CarlSagan42

    • @mikakataja5783

      I think the key is in that this is solo performance vs team performance. When you speedrun, only you can mess it up. While in team games, you can always easily blame others, whether they deserve the blame or not. This along with being teamed up with people you do not know, and limited communication causes toxicity in community. I'm talking about both short messages being easily misunderstood in both tone and meaning. But also tolerance to criticism from people you don't know feeling worse than it would, coming from people you know and see face to face.

      +CarlSagan42 what i know/think i know: Quantum computing is not 1s or 0s but 1s, 0s or a quantum state of both. also quantum tunneling where 2 particles are somehow connected from any distance. and people for the longest time could compute but couldnt get the results because as soon as you looked the results changed. Almost like Schrödinger's cat. they found a way around that though. something about other dementions. Im studying for IT networking and have looked into it a little in my free time.

    The first time I saw this video, it made me attempt to fix my posture (I've done this a few other times too), but it slowly got worse again over the last few months. Then this shows up in my recommended videos and I think, "That was a good video. I'll watch it again." I completely forgot about the posture talk, so it helped again.

    Quantum Computing is actually not 1's and 0's,
    Quantum Computing is all about so called 'qubits', these can 'describe' any combination of a and b that satisfy |a²| + |b²| = 1, so it actually describes a '2 dimensional sphere' or the surface of a 'ball'. (They _can_ actually describe 1 and 0)
    So 1 qubit can have 'more' information than an array of bits.
    And the problem was to 'make' them as precise as needed and encoding them with the same precision.

      Actually if you plug the sun into the quadratic formula and then place that on a graph, the parabolic shape of the line would resemble the quantum physics that means that it is 0's and 1's, and in turn, steven hawking would have to be placed in the formula of the axis of symmetry(x=-b/2a) in order to find that x=13£.

    I'm not a speedrunner, but I'm involved in some other skill-intensive communities (sleight of hand, circus, chess), and all of these things are just so difficult and so isolating that communities form. Chess is competition - that's what you do. But the majority of what's happening in chess is all about teaching - any Grandmaster who isn't the tip-top of the world tournament scene can be found all over youtube and twitch sharing all of their tricks. I imagine the speedrunning community is built on the same kind of mutual passion....people want to share the trial and triumph of something they're passionate about.
    Guys in League of Legends just want to get kills.....

    • @CarlSagan42

    • @Coffe789
      @Coffe789 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +SirGeforce knowing the helpful mechanics of the game is all part of getting better as a speedrunner; it isn't an unfair advantage, it's a skill that they've learned.

    • @SirGeforce
      @SirGeforce 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Knowing of a glitch and thus beating the previous record without being better mechanically would not make me happy.

    • @exquisitecorpse4917
      @exquisitecorpse4917 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a really narrow view of speedrunning....first - there are no-glitch runs if you're a genuine purist (certain speedrunners ARE purists), but even the glitchiest run requires intense dedication to even approach a world record. What you're saying is the equivalent of "Professional basketball requires no talent - those guys are seven feet tall!" Being tall helps - no doubt - but it also helps to spend 20 years training with the best and the brightest.
      I wouldn't shrug off speedrunning as mere glitch exploitation with no game skill to back it up...Mario speedrunners genuinely ARE the best Mario players in the world.

    I think the reason the speedrunning community is so cool is because you guys are basically just trying to push the limits of what is possible.
    Think about it. Who could have imagined that people would be able to beat Ocarina of Time in the time it takes me to boil an egg? Or collect all 150 stars in Super Mario 64 in the time I could watch a short film?
    Competitive games oftentimes have toxic communities because the players feel that they are limited in what they can do by forces not in their control, i.e. Imbalanced heroes, cheap strats, stupid teammates, hackers, etc. They make excuses after excuses as to why they can't succeed, and it's always someone else's fault.
    One one side, you have a community that focuses on achieving the impossible and exploring endless possibilities. On the other, a community that focuses on copying the meta and drawing hard lines as to what is or isn't possible. That's why they're so different.

    • @CarlSagan42
      @CarlSagan42  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Interesting perspective, thanks!

    • @theoreticallyinsane5
      @theoreticallyinsane5 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think there are a few other things worth considering, such as the fact that speedrunning is a personal challenge before anything else, so its really about personal betterment and not about beating the best.
      It's also worth mentioning that speedruns almost paradoxically require more patience than other things; not everyone can do the same thing in a row for hours sometimes without getting any results whatsoever and say they enjoyed themselves afterwards, so for the most part, good speedrunners seem to just be more laid back as people.
      Also, it's really pretty easy for someone to get into the community if they're interested, since you're basically walking up to them and saying, "Talk to me about your favorite subject and I will absorb it like a dry sponge." It's always good to see a community growing, and having it grow with your participation, as well as getting to rant about what you love, is really just good all around (I guess this falls under speedrunning being a niche community).

      TLDR; The Mario Maker and Speed Running communities are like an art gallery and its patrons. The League of Legends and CS:GO Communities are like a toddler being told he has to eat his broccoli if he wants his desert.
      I think it also has a lot to do with the dedication to the craft. Many artists admire another's work. It's similar to speed running and Mario Maker.
      In speed running it's the art of transitioning between scenes as quickly as possible using any method available in the game. It's more of an art and a science combined.
      In the Mario Maker community you have the traditional creative aspect paired with the gaming community. Add in the nostalgia of Mario from any youngsters development and you've got a community designed around design, and built to be supportive. Even the star system is used appropriately in Mario Maker.
      Games like league of legends and Counter Strike end up with bad communities because people that are unable to compete at the level they want to want to deter and demean others. They want to bring everyone to their level so that it's an "even" game. But skill and mechanics and practice are required and most people that play Mario Maker or do Speed Runs practise daily. This is not always the case with other genres of games.
      Along with the fact that Mario Maker and Speed Running are niche communities that rely on the community the way the community relies on them makes for a very symbiotic relationship of respect and cautious criticisms; directly in opposition to the other communities that are designed around being better than the next person (even a team-mate).
      And to not detract from the other replies, I really do agree with @TheoreticallyInsane and @MysteryMan; I've just phrased it for my personal perspective.

    I think the community is so good because of how small it is, everybody knows eachother and there isn't really room for toxicity. Also I think speedrunning or kaizo attracts a certain type of person who just have a love for the game itself, there isn't big bucks in Mario maker/speedrunning, and that seems to keep everything fairly pleasant and purely for fun.

    I think the communities of team based games are generally more toxic. people blame each other for every mistake and due to being anonymus everybody just does as he pleases, no matter if you're trolling or if you use really abusive language. I played a lot of league of legends and overwatch and always tried to keep it friendly but it doesn't matter how nice you are, if you have a bad game there is a good chance you're gonna get flamed ^^ mario maker community is probably better because it is all about your own skill. if you fck up, it's your own fault. you probably won't see this comment though :D love you carl

    On the whole quantum computing thing, it is a big deal because of the quantum laws.
    In theory what a quantum computer does is that instead of reading the electrical current flowing through the gates, it reads the state of the quantum particle itself. So you have two different possible states for it which is you "ones" and "zeros". But here comes the kicker.
    Because of the uncertainty principle within quantum laws a quantum particle can be in two different states at the same time. This means that in theory a single gate can be read as 1 and 0 at the same exact moment. Now this is what makes it truly insane, as you add gates to it, instead of being so you only get one operation per gate, you can have as many operations per gate as there are gates. So practically instead of counting gates bit and such with just "1,2,3,4..." you count them 2^x where x is the number of gates. And already chips with quantum theory in working when I last read (which was about 27 or so) were insanely quick still. The only problem is that they can sometimes quantum tunneling I think it is within the gates, creating a useless gate. There have been quantum computers two or three years ago with hundreds of gates but these had one purpose. If you have a grid with hundreds of thousands of different paths, which one is the most effective? That is what those were. But in theory if you were capable of reprogramming these route gates you could most likely within a few years get processing chips that rival our current ones in the number of gates... but destroy them in pure processing power. Let us just say that if you managed to get quantum computing, the problem wouldn't be "how many operations you have to do" but "how large is the operations you have to do and can you put em in several pieces to calculate several things at once". If you want a good example look at Google Chrome in activity handler. If we manage to create quantum computers, each of those instance with google chrome could see a quantum processing chip in such a manner that they have one chip each. Account with that the current speeds and you can see this is insane. Pair this with the frozen light memory drives being developed in Denmark last I heard of them, that are as quick as ram but up to pentabyte in storage... our computers are gonna see a extremely large jump in effectivity. There is a lot of these things with the future of it all... Like quantum mechanical spinning ethernet connections...
    I do understand if most of these things have already been said and understand it was a while ago, but I do hope you see this and get yourself some answers from this... Also sorry about the fucking book I just wrote here XD Have fun, GG and all that shit.
    OH ALSO!

    so basically instead of bits (0, 1) there are qubits which are 0s and 1s at the same time-like an electron is a particle and a wave at the same time-hence "quantum" computing referring to the quantum state. Therefore, it allows for faster computing instead of true or false trial by error which takes longer.

    I think the reason that the mario maker community is so pleasant is a combination of 2 things. A) It's a game that appeals to an older audience, because it has a nostalgia kick to us. B) It's typically something that takes a sizable amount of skill to play, so the age group is older. Sure, there's levels like the classical mario levels, but if that's all you played day in and day out, it's not something that would appeal to the younger audience.

  • @benhearsum7274

    I think there's a bunch of things that makes the speedrunning and Mario Maker communities different from LoL and other games.
    While speedrunning is competitive, it's not a shooter or other multiplayer game where you are _actively_ competing against others in real time. I think that having someone beat you in real time is way more frustrating than someone beating your record.
    Another big difference is that these communities are really interested in finding tricks, glitches, and other interesting things about games. It's not just about playing and winning, it's about seeing what's possible. You can enjoy the latter part even if you suck. These communities remind me of the old hacker/phreaker communities who often just wanted to push the limits of what's possible with technology. This is VERY different than other games where the focus is really just on winning.
    I think a lot of the speedrunning and Mario Maker communities are much more connected than other games. The fact that they are smaller communities than you see in an MMO helps (think of the Mario Maker community as an MMO guild rather than the entire game). Twitch also makes a huge difference. It's much more difficult to be a dick to something who is actively entertaining (and educating, in your case!) you.

    Just a side comment on quantum computing. 1. We can't keep the "computer" running for long enough to do anything relevant yet. 2. This wont be for everyday use. For browsing the internet and writing papers a regular processor will still be faster. It's the large scale simulations and supercomputer processes that will be made orders of magnitude faster.

    The difficulty with quantum computing lies in how unbelievably sensitive quantum computers are to interference. This sensitivity is an unavoidable fact of physics. In order to carry out the computation correctly, the wavefunction has to explore the state space you're interested in, with zero interaction with the outside environment. The bigger the computation, the more qubits you need, which in turn means more elements in your system, and the more likely the system is to have a random interaction that breaks the computation.
    I've often thought of the sensitivity of some wavefunctions like soap bubbles-you can manipulate them to an extent, gently push them and guide them, even stretch them a little-but they'll pop (collapse) eventually, and once they do, you have to start from the beginning again.
    There are quantum error detection/correction methods, just like there are in regular computers, but unfortunately, the most common kind of classical error correction-redundancy-is fundamentally impossible due to quantum mechanics and the no-cloning theorem.
    So not only are quantum computers exponentially more sensitive to errors than classical computers, errors are more difficult to detect and correct! That gives you an idea of the difficulty involved.
    The most recent advance was hailed as a milestone, and it was definitely progress. But it's the kind of incremental progress that is typical in science. I don't think we'll be having quantum computers on our desktops, or even our factories, any time soon.

    The basic idea from what I get of quantum computers as well is the fact that a lot of information can be written in the spin of an electron. So instead of requiring whole loops in circuits to generate a value, you'd need just one electron. This obviously means that you can process and hold a whooolllllle lot more information in a smaller space then you ever could with electricity.

    +Carlsagan42 I think the reason speedrun communities are more friendly than "competitive" game communities (League, et al) is because a speed run is the player against the game, rather than other people. There's a lot of crowdsourcing as people test the game's limits and that builds the comaradery

    on quantum computing, the biggest struggle is error correcting. the best analogy i've heard is that quantum computing is like an analog dial, lets say you want to set the dial to 5 its really hard to set it at exactly 5 and that leads to errors in your computation which get worse and worse as you do millions of computations. So what a lot of quantum info guys are working on is trying to error correct without having to reset the dial every time essentially.

    So, the idea behind quantum computers is not that they can do what normal computers cannot, but that they can do crazy parallel processing. Where a bit in a classical computer is either a 0 or a 1, a qbit in a quantum computer is a superposition between states. That means that, for instance, if you're looking for the prime factorisation of a big number (say in an encryption), instead of trying out all options one by one, you can try them all at once, and with a reasonable certainty get an answer that is correct. When last I heard, a few years ago, they had managed to factorise 21.
    The only qbit I've ever seen a video of (the video was by Veritasium, v=zNzzGgr2mhk) was implemented as the spin of a single electron around a phosphorus atom, in a silicone transistor that conducted or didn't conduct electricity depending on the spin.
