Time for another coastal one folks, welcome to Aldbrough, which lies on the main road between Hornsea and Withernsea where the B1242 meets the B1238. The village - quite a size compared to many around it - is not the only settlement within Aldbrough parish, as it contains several small hamlets including Etherdwick, East Newton, Tansterne and Carlton. There’s also a deserted medieval village called Bewick, and a former hamlet called Ringborough, which has been mainly lost to coastal erosion.
The name Aldbrough has had many variations of spelling over the years. The suffix ‘brough’ or ‘burg’ is of Saxon-Norman origin and means castle or entrenchment, and the history of the area can be traced back to Roman times. Aldbrough was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Farming was particularly important in the area during the 18th and 19th centuries. Aldbrough’s commercial self sufficiency is still evident throughout the village today by the buildings which were once used as shops and craftsmen’s premises.
The majority of older buildings in the village date from between 1840 and 1880, and although constructed in the Victorian period, are of gorgerous Georgian-style architecture as brick and pantiles generally replaced more rustic materials. Aldbrough had the benefit of its very own brickworks too. And its on the coast, so that’s another reason to love it.
