Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another reaction made possible by PATREON with Jean-Jacques Goldman "Quand la musique est bonne." Boy is the music good. Jean Jacques takes this nice rock song and throws in a little surprise. See me go bananas now!

A bit rough but quick translation of the lyrics:
And if I had been born in 17 in Leidenstadt
On the ruins of a battlefield
Would I have been better and worse than these people
      If I had been German?
Raised up in humiliation, hate and ignorance
      Fed with dreams of revenge
Would I have been one of these unlikely consciences,
Tears in the middle of a flood?
If I had grown up in Belfast’s docklands
Soldier of a Faith, of a caste
Would have I the strength, against all my people,
To betray, to offer a helping hand?
If I had been born White and rich in Johannesburg
Between the power and the fear
Would have I heard these cries carried by the wind
Nothing will ever be the same
We’ll never know what we’re really made of
      Hidden behind appearances
The soul of a brave, an accomplice or a persecutor
      The worst or the best?
Would we be of those who resist or sheep of a flock
If more than words were needed?
And if I had been born in 17 in Leidenstadt
On the ruins of a battlefield
Would I have been better and worse than these people
      If I had been German?
And let’s be spared, you and I, for a long time
Of having to choose a side

I heard you asking for links to songs. Well I'm a huge fan of Jean-Jacques Goldman since I've been 8 years old in 1982, so if i had to give you links there would be a tremendous bunch !
And in fact, I've fallen in love with his voice when i was just 1 year old ! In 1975, Jean-Jacques sang "Sister Jane" with his band "Taï Phong". Of course i didn't remember that but when i was 15, i bought an audio tape of what Jean-Jacques Goldman had done before becoming a renowned singer. On this tape there were his first singles that hadn't worked at the moment they came out (despite it sounded great) and a few titles he had recorded with "Taï Phong" and when i listened to "Sister Jane" i recognized it ! I went to my mom and asked her if she knew that song, she said "yes, of course, it was a hit in the 70's, but i don't remember who played it" and i said "It was Jean-Jacques Goldman !" we listened to it and she couldn't believe i remembered it, but i did !
I'm gonna give you a link to "Sister Jane" : th-cam.com/video/oJfuBnEHvXo/w-d-xo.html
And one to "Et l'on n'y peut rien" from his last album : th-cam.com/video/09zwFKuodOE/w-d-xo.html

8:10 "His catalog must be freaking amazing"
Well, as a French guy, I had heard a lot about Jean-Jacques Goldman growing up, on TV, on the radio, etc. But at some point I realized I knew his name but I had never really cared for his work. So I ended up looking for a playlist of his greatest hits. The playlist was 40 musics long, and I thought to myself "yeah, right, 40 songs... I'll be glad if I know 5 of them". Except when listening to the playlist, I realized I knew maybe 35 of them by heart, having heard them (and loved them) so much, but I had just never realized they were all from Jean-Jacques Goldman.
    The man is a legend.
Unfortunately for you, you can listen to his music and appreciate it, but you won't realize how beautiful some lyrics are. The song "Puisque tu pars" is an example of that, true French poetry that no translation would ever do justice to...

Just look for his repertoire, click on any title that inspires you. You can't go wrong with JJ.

He is a greart songwriter as well. His iconic song is in the trio Fredericks Goldman Jones in "À nos actes manqués". His absolute best with Carole Fredericks and Michael Jones. You need to react absolutely to that. I also like his solo hits "La vie par procuration", "Là bas", and Fredericks, Goldman, Jones hit "Né en 17 à Leidenstadt". But "À nos actes manqués" would win every time. It is based on zouk music

Donc pour les chanteurs à textes ou anciens (avant les 70's) ça ne l'intéressera pas. Il est bien précisé dans le descriptif de sa chaîne c'est "80's-90's to now".
