@@BushyStallion And they would have to make Jade, Noob, Kintaro, and Shao Khan playable in MK2. They're cool in MK Trilogy but that game feels so wonky compared to MK2 and UMK3.
Vanilla MK3 is a finished product. You had story panels, bios, endings, the CPU was not so hard, the bosses were easy and accept some tricks. UMK3 is a mess. It has more characters, but the CPU was cheap, the arena rotation was bugged, no more story, versus screen endings and so on.
UMK3 is the better game but it's missing so much polish. It feels like they skipped all the QA. The new stages are super bland, most of the music just sucks (what even is that music on the blue portal stage?). I never noticed the stage rotation was off until you mentioned it. I've always looked down on MK3 (and UMK3) because of how far back the presentation is scaled back vs MK2 and even MK1. Presentation alone, MK3 feels like what MK2 should have been and MK2 feels like what MK3 should have been.
Isn't the repetitive stage looping caused by uppercutting the character unto the ceiling on the stages that allow that? If you don't do that then you get the full, proper stage rotation...right? Or am I remembering that incorrectly?
I believe it affects the rotation also, however, an uppercut is almost 25 percent damage so I’ll never not take the uppercutting chance if it’s there. Thanks for the comment 👊🏼

You know what's funny. This video reminded me of the first time I seen mk 3 which was in a magazine. They showed the character select screen but didn't have the names of any of the characters. UMK3 wins it for me. Not so much because of the "new characters" (all of them just being re-colored John Turk and Becky Gable), but rather the new mechanic, the one you've mentioned, jump punch and neutral jump kick combo starters. Although that actually rendered few characters useless against the ones with launchers (robots, Sheeva and Nightwolf are very easily re-launchable thus infinites against them are a common thing). Personally I didn't miss Scorpion in vanilla at all. Probably because Cyrax was supposed to be his replacement, with his moveset functioning exactly like Scorpion's would. Also, Scorpion is completely pointless addition to UMK3 since human Smoke plays exactly the same but is better in every aspect. Long story short, the best version of MK3 for me is the arcade UMK3 Plus.
I understand UMK3 is 'better' or 'more'. But I prefer MK3 because UMK3 stages in my opinion are crap and the rotation is bloody annoying. That's most definitely enough for me not to play it as much.

UMK3 was a big marketing scheme to help the coin-op industry along while people were wanting to play the big stuff at home (which is where the market was headed). This watered down MK IMO. They started becoming more vested in making baseline engine games and obfuscating whether the game is a a NEW game or just an upgrade. This was deliberate- you can throw MKT on there. I can go for days on the port licensing. MKDA/MKD/MKa went a similar route
UMK3 was made basically because some of us back in the day said: “Hey! where’s Scorpion and the other badass characters we saw in MK2 that are supposed to be staples in MK that you guys, for some reason, decided to leave out?”
Vanilla MK3 over UMK3. I only ever went to the arcades like once or twice a year for like birthday parties, so console ports were the majority of my experience. I had MK3 on Genesis and sunk tons of time into it and its lore. I never saw UMK3 in an arcade until years later, and by the time the Genesis port came out it was hard to get and I was playing more capcom fighters on Saturn. I also feel like I have a thing for the penultimate console ports of games - I prefer Genesis SSF2 over SSF2T and Genesis MK3 over UMK3 (even if the last iteration is better). MK3 moved the story forward with, oh shit, Kahn is bringing the fight to Earth - UMK3 felt like, hey, let's just do the SF thing and re-release the same game with some enhancements.
Mortal Kombat 3 will always be my favorite, but honestly, Mortal Kombat 2 is right up there for me because it just feels like the complete package. UMK3 kind of feels like an update or maybe even the first concept of DLC for its time. The jump-in combos, though... they seem to push the line of what's reasonably possible. I get that MK has never been about ultra-realism, but I guess everyone has their limits somewhere, lol.
I love vanilla MK3 much better. I like the attract mode storyboard and the endings too. The ai isn't cheap, and the level rotation on UMK3 makes no sense. You end up playing the same stages over and over.
MK3 is better the AI is less brutal for a start which makes the game more fun😅 UMK3 has cheap AI it may have more characters but doesn’t make it a better game 👍
The rotation of stages was odd. I don't think you need a code though. I think the new stages repeat once and then the original stages come up. Trilogy was all types of messed up in terms of stages.
Played vanilla mk3 in arcades a lot to the point ppl watched me had it for mega drive then the ps1 like you was very annoyed scorpion was missing I do prefer vmk3 but boy I went crazy when my grandad bought me umk3 for Xmas after thinking I didn’t get it!!! Great memories with both
I agree with everything you said about the comparison. Although UMK3 will more than likely always be my favorite, MK3 is a solid game on its own. However, when it was initially released, i was VERY disappointed like so many others because of the absence of Scorpion, as he was my favorite character. Plus, i really didn't like the combo system because it was a new way of playing an MK game. I didn't play MK3 in the arcades very much, mainly because there were always crowds around the cabs. I didn't really get to experience MK3 much until i got it for SNES, and even then, i didn't like it because the difficulty was pretty damn hard. (At least until the cheats were released) Now, when UMK3 came out at the arcade, i was immediately drawn to it because of the marquee, and when i saw Scorpion, Reptile, Kitana , Mileena, Jade, Classic Sub Zero, and Ermac, i said "Allll right! (No pun intended) this is more like it! I loved playing UMK3 in the arcade. I made MANY trips to the mall and PX military store in FT. Meade over the course of 1996 to play it. Years later, im inclined to agree with you on so many points, from the stage rotation, the character story screens, and so on. I think UMK3 remains my favorite, more so because it was released at a time in my life that i absolutely loved. The nostalgia plays a MAJOR part in why UMK3 is my favorite. Great video bro.👊
I think both are good in their own right. I used to have UMK3 for the Saturn. The extra characters somehow don't make a huge difference and the SNES version of UMK3 at least has no animalities. Even if you add 50% more stuff and subtract 10% I cannot see that as an honest upgrade.
MK3 has its charm, mainly because it is its own thing and separate from the previous aesthetics. UMK3 seems to strip the art, like all the attract mode stuff and ending art, which is unfortunate because they apparently didn't shoot ending footage for the new characters. UMK3 at the same time, is both a watered down version of MK3 and improved version of MK3. It's MK2 characters in MK3, which maybe they were right, doesn't seem to fit. Also in UMK3, it takes two cycles of the new stages before you get the MK3 stages.
I understand what you mean about the run in vs jump in kombo, but it was added for a good reason. If run is the only way to somewhat properly get in close enough to do a combo, it negated the whole system because anyone could throw a projectile to defend and running becomes moot. I don't think there is one character in MK3 without a projectile.
My favorite has and always will be UMK3. However, I always appreciated vanilla MK3. It really is an in-between of MK2 and UMK3. Vanilla I feel requires more precise decision making with the lack of the jump-in combos and the ninjas that have teleporting moves, spears, pop-up combos. I actually prefer playing MK3 against begginers because it slows me down. Not that I'm good lol
I like both versions, buuuuuut, as I have said before, gameplay-wise I'll go either UMK3 or MKT (difficulty aside of course), but in presentation is Vanilla MK3, while it doesn't fix 100% the presentation, the Plus hack of UMK3 gives the game part of the flavor the standard UMK3 lost back in the day, however I have a very soft spot for Vanilla MK3 as it was the very 1st Mortal Kombat game I played, and one that I have a great memory of the ONLY time I got to play it on it's original arcade glory around in 2000 (yeah, it was great to find an original arcade machine) as funny enough, at that arcade place nobody managed to beat the game, and then on my single credit I had to play, I nailed the Master Tower (in UMK3 language is Master 2 or in MKT language... the Champion Tower) with Cyrax thanks to the knowledge that somehow I didn't lost after the short time I played the SNES version, not to mention that the difficulty overall is much more balanced compared to UMK3+Trilogy, the operator felt happy that someone managed to beat the game (heck, he admited he also played it here and there, but couldn't beat it, not even on Novice tower), so... yeah, the people who attempted to beat it on that final day for the machine, got hyped when I got to Motaro and then with Khan, but they really got the hype of joy when I won.
MK3 over UMK3 all day. Yeah, the extra characters are nice, but the AI was broken as hell and the nerfs to Kabal sucked. I don't know if I've ever beaten UMK3 with any characters other than Smoke and Sektor, cheesing the AI. I'm also a little biased because I saved up all summer as a 15 year old to get a PlayStation on launch and the PS1 version of MK3.
Although the fan favourites were pretty well missing on MK3, I still think MK3 is still better than UMK3. Not fleshed out as much, but more importantly, why is Scorpion’s Animality a penguin?? That’s just going too silly
In UMK3 after beating shao kahn you can choose yin yang and fight against ermac. lose one round out of 3 and then start a game again without having to add a credit. I once won 48 wins with a single credit. But in MK3 after beating Shao Kahn the game is game over. So I like one as much as the other but not for the same reasons. Mk3 is obviously a beautiful and good game!
Hard to say for me , now i havent played alot of mk3 lately but i know i aslo like the levels better in basic 3. On the other hand though more characters is a huge plus for umk3. Either way mk3 is the best mk imo.
I also prefer the original MK3 over UMK3. Why? Ultimate MK3 was not a finished game. Here are my biggest complaints about it: 1. Missing Items. UMK3 was missing so much... the story and artwork were all gone. The bios were gone except the 4 new characters. The new characters didn't even have a complete set of moves... many were missing Fatality, Friendship, Babality, and Animality finishing moves. Why?! Classic Sub-Zero only had 1 Fatality that literally did nothing but go to a black screen. Lame!! I could write more, but it would take forever. 2. Missing Stages. Yeah, I know they were all technically there, but you had to play through all of the new UMK3 stages TWICE before you'd ever have a chance of seeing an original MK3 stage again. The program never changed the rotation, and you started at the same stage every time. The new stages, to me, were so bland and boring! Shao Khan's Cave stage was my prime example. It was so dark and black everywhere, and when you got to the edges of the stage, you could easily see holes in the background art where things were left unfinished. 3. Computer AI. Yeah, I know many of the tricks to cheese the AI fighters into losing every single time, but UMK3 was just awful. My biggest complaint was the "rubber banding" it would do so often. If you ever got the upper hand in the fight, all you'd have to do is dance back and forth with your opponent until time ran out. As long as you didn't get too close, the AI would never attack you again. I could go on and on about the differences between both games, but I'd be typing all night. I prefer the original MK3 because I feel like more effort and heart was put into developing that game than it's newer release.
I couldn't imagine the amount of hours Ed Boon spent programming these games. From MK to UMK3, he basically was programming them for 4 years straight. These games nearly came out only one year after each other.
Like I mentioned on one of your MKT videos, the stage rotation gets messed up when you uppercut into the stage above...if you can somehow avoid that, you see many more stages. One of the more pointless additions to the series IMO.
I was pissed off about UMK3 coming out so soon after I had dropped $60-70 bucks on MK3 for the SNES, so I never played UMK3. The roster for UMK3 should’ve been MK3’s roster, but that’s water that’s long been under the bridge now.
Yes i didn't like the umk3 stages nearly as much as mk3. I have more nostalgia as well for mk3 and I purposely sold my basic arcade that didn't include it to get the deluxe cabinet.
MK3 is the real canon to the lore and i wasn't a big fan of the ninja designs in the expansion. Aside all that, MK3 just felt way different than the 2 and not in a good way.

I always loved reading the lore cards of the Mortal Kombat in the Arcade. Would usually do it after losing all my quarters 😅
MK3 is a fundamentally incomplete game. UMK3 is the real MK3.
UMK3 didn't even have original artwork, and some characters didn't have all the finishers. Technically MK3 was more complete.
What??! MK3 is a complete game. UMK3 is a side job.
UMK3 was made basically because some of us back in the day said: “Hey! where’s Scorpion and the other badass characters we saw in MK2 that are supposed to be staples in MK that you guys, for some reason, decided to leave out?”
Right! 😂
I love these videos man, feel like a kid in a candy 🍭 store!
Thanks dude, bring a toothbrush next time lol
It seems like the behind-the-scenes turmoil with the lawsuit had an impact on the MK3 product.
Well said Marc, all valid points and reasons why I like Vanilla more as well 👊🏼
@@BushyStallion 👊
On older consoles MK3. When it comes to the arcade, and the re-release on XBox live UMK3.
MK3 is better the AI is less brutal for a start which makes the game more fun😅 UMK3 has cheap AI it may have more characters but doesn’t make it a better game 👍
Mortal Kombat 3 for the win. Ultimate is decent for arcade , but the ports Vanilla is amazing on PS1 and Sega Genesis
What is that your arcade mode that allow to change vesions and play online?
It’s an Arcade1up Mortal Kombat 30th Anniversary cab.
I liked the bank because of the uppercut to the rooftop.
Man if they got Hasselhoff to play Sub that would have been awesome! Or Glacier from WCW.
Younger me: Omg I can't believe they released UMK3 just after I bought MK3!
Older me: MK3 is better
@@HeeHawDonkey-w9f Scorpion was my favourite character and I had MK3, aka the only MK he wasn't in. Haha
Same lol
Every MK character has projectiles. So I think you're on the money.
@@lancepage1914 Pretty sure. So the UMK3 combo change was to allow for even more aggressive play, letting people jump over and in to punish.
MK3 put Kano & Sonya (the two least popular characters at that time) and took out the most popular popular ones.
Mk3 for me, played a lot more of it vs UMK3.
Nice 👍🏼
35:28 Appearing/Disappearing Net? lol
Looked like it lol
13:45 when did Ray Liotta become a software designer?
It's Not The Actor 🤣
In UMK3 after beating shao kahn you can choose yin yang and fight against ermac. lose one round out of 3 and then start a game again without having to add a credit. I once won 48 wins with a single credit. But in MK3 after beating Shao Kahn the game is game over. So I like one as much as the other but not for the same reasons. Mk3 is obviously a beautiful and good game!
I played UMK3 for fun with my brothers. I would choose UMK3 because it had more character.
I dare you to play MK 3 on game boy…maybe try to beat it with Sindel lol
What about MK2 vs U/MK3?
Raiden was such a heel (pro wrestling talk) , in the first MK but that changed starting with MK 2
Yeah he was a bad guy in the first one also, a fact many don’t realize also..
UMK3.
If only we got UMK2, it would be the greatest MK game ever, free.
UMK2? Hmmm, that sounds like a great idea actually 👊🏼
Hard to say for me , now i havent played alot of mk3 lately but i know i aslo like the levels better in basic 3. On the other hand though more characters is a huge plus for umk3. Either way mk3 is the best mk imo.
I like both, for many reasons
so true, mk3 felt easier; i would give up playing UMK3 and eventually killed the series for me….jade
Scorpion is only one you could of had and even stuck with aesthetic and have No Mask version with that Skull in all its glory
I also prefer the original MK3 over UMK3. Why? Ultimate MK3 was not a finished game. Here are my biggest complaints about it:
Ideally, if they waited an released UMK3 1 year or 2 later and had the content of trilogy, it would've had serious hype maybe
I couldn't imagine the amount of hours Ed Boon spent programming these games. From MK to UMK3, he basically was programming them for 4 years straight. These games nearly came out only one year after each other.
That’s a good point 👊🏼
i just wish that they never took off sub zeros mask for mk3😢
UMK3 by a mile for me.
MK3 all the way for me!
UMK3 because they added the characters who were missing. This was DLC before DLC. Lol
SF really hammered that home.
Umk3 of course
Like I mentioned on one of your MKT videos, the stage rotation gets messed up when you uppercut into the stage above...if you can somehow avoid that, you see many more stages. One of the more pointless additions to the series IMO.
I was pissed off about UMK3 coming out so soon after I had dropped $60-70 bucks on MK3 for the SNES, so I never played UMK3. The roster for UMK3 should’ve been MK3’s roster, but that’s water that’s long been under the bridge now.
Damn that’s how much the carts were back in the the mid 90s? Same price as today for games ?
Ever played through Super Street Fighter 2 turbo arcade? It's a great version, and Ultimate MK3 for me personally without a doubt for the extra chars
Both very hard but very AWESOME games 👊🏼
UMK3 by far!
Jade was the reason I stopped trying the game solo
Lol she’s made many people rage trust me, myself included lol
I agree 100% Darril. I think the same
The original MK3 stages were definitely better!
14:00 Looking like a Death Row Records album cover 😂
😂😂 the design team, I’ll never look at that screen the same anymore lol
Yes i didn't like the umk3 stages nearly as much as mk3. I have more nostalgia as well for mk3 and I purposely sold my basic arcade that didn't include it to get the deluxe cabinet.
couldnt tell ya which i like better all I got is the first 2 and umk3 😆
MK3 is the real canon to the lore and i wasn't a big fan of the ninja designs in the expansion. Aside all that, MK3 just felt way different than the 2 and not in a good way.
Snes version of UMK3 had Rain
Naaaaaaah it lacks a lot of stages and super fast, also the music for some reason bugs me off in the version
Greeting my Canadian MK bro. Can I get a "FINISH HIM!" on Trudeau? Or you going with a "Mercy"?
He should’ve been finished a long time ago… 🫡
@BushyStallion the bell tower is a quite a long drop, but he finally hit bottom!
