I have a friend who has DID and I'm now wondering: is it a good thing to mask? Do you feel like you're forced to do it and that makes you hate it, or do you not mind?? @@princessthyemis It depends on the system and alter to be honest. Some feel closer to the one they mask like so they don’t feel as forced, some feel fat and very different which either makes it difficult to the point of impossible or very forced. For some of us we’ll end up fronting without the knowledge of who we are because of masking. We’re not answering for OP this is just our experience as a system.
@@princessthyemis we feel as though masking is the safest option when it comes to interacting with the psychiatrist because of bad experiences with her, as well as the mom because of various issues, but it's easier to let our guard down around certain people and be who each of us are, versus someone who has shown us that the mask is our safest option. thank you for asking, as well as the love. we're sending you our best wishes as well 💛✨
@@princessthyemis Another system checking in, though we don't have DID. For us, we also don't have a host, and so it's less masking as a particular person and more masking as the singlet other people assume we are. It's a lot like when people assume we're cisgender (many of us aren't). It hurts. It's being seen as someone you aren't, yet a lot of the time we don't feel comfortable or safe being genuine because we don't know how people will treat us (and if they'll even believe us when we say we're plural). That's not to say that everything is terrible, or that we can't have relationships. But there's a barrier, there's parts of who we are that other people don't know (again, similar to not being out as trans).

On the second watch-through, I got emotional when I heard Virgil sing "I'm already strong and tough" especially after realizing on the third watch-through that earlier in the song he sung "Trying to be strong and tough." I see a lot of people talking about the Virgil inspired character but there's one moment that I haven't seen many people talk about and it's at 1:14 where the Patton inspired character is looking at the camera saying "like me" in a begging way
He wants to be good, to not do anything wrong, and his hands' position reminds me of a prayer. He wants to be accepted, and (at least some) people will try to be perfect because they feel like they'll be accepted if they are.
The Logan-inspired one acting a little more mechanical did it for me too... Sometimes Logic can be very cold and methodical, so having the circuts displayed was a nice touch
I keep coming back to watch this again, the part where the purple one says "I'm already strong and tough" means so much to me. Clearly he's like Virgil, he's like your anxiety and insecurities I'm sure. But the fact that he was the first one to say that is so meaningful.

All of these lyrics are really really beautiful but that one really stood out to me. And the desperation on Patton's face during the "like me" part!! Whoa!! All of this is so gorgeous, and in a way, it's like a spiritual sequel to Recipe for Me--its message about authenticity is beautiful. I support you, Thomas, and I love seeing your work grow and change along with you-- you should never hide who you are and I'm so glad you have the creative freedom and wildly awesome vision to make something as amazing as this!!this!! Reading the comments and seeing how so many different people feel represented in this video makes me just- *excited flappy hands* I saw a lot of DID systems relating, and people with mental illnesses, someone was recently diagnosed with ADHD I love this community so much and while I was very close to tears by the video itself, the comments sent me over the edge Thomas, I really hope you know how much of a positive difference you make in this world and how many lives are better with you in it ❤️

I also deal with depression and anxiety. It truly took a long ass time for me to accept them at face value and not as "character flaws". Like a lot of people have already said the line (quoted by the representation of Virgil) "I'm already strong and tough" really resonated on that point.

I’ve always come to your videos when I’m having a hard time or especially questioning myself in who I’m attracted to and how I see myself with my gender. And this video speaks to me more than you think. Just like you, I have all these different pieces of me that don’t particularly fit with each other. But you’re always teaching and reassuring me to be okay with them and not to be afraid of how I feel and who I am. But I don't believe that this has any correlation to the Sides series, or really I don't think Thomas intended it to be a part of the canon. It is a clear color connection though.
Thomas has made a series of Instagram stories explaining the meaning of each of the colors which, even if roughly inspired by the Sides, are much different from them. I'll try to bring you a short summary of these, but you should definitely read the originals on his Instagram account. Red is the performer but also his fashionable sense, how he wants to be seen as a whole person, not just the character he performs and also how he also wants to feel fashionably pretty like anybody else. Yellow is the "Successful" facet, how he feels pushed to showcase his success to grow as a creator but at the same time he feels more like a liar in that sense because everything he makes he makes it for fun, not just for the numbers, so it's the facet he identifies less with. Green is his want to feel sexy and physically attractive, at least from time to time, how he fears he can't showcase that facet of himself because of the type of content he makes, so eventually has to hide it. Cyan: That's his internet persona, his happy, family-oriented, vlogger self as we see him in his videos, how he likes to be safe for any kids watching, but also feels he's a little too much encapsulated in that role and he would like to expand his range out of the family-oriented content at least sometimes. Blue represents his activist-self, how when he discusses important real-life topics, he wants to have all the facts straight and not speak out of emotions, as well as not forgetting the privilige he speaks from. Purple is a representation of mental illness and other darknesses he has to deal with, like he's mentioned anxiety and heartbreak in his content, but there are other things he's never discussed and he hopes if he ever discusses them it doesn't "mar" the way his audience view him online. These are VERY summarized explanations, go check his Instagram for the full texts, they're worth reading for a better understanding of the song and the video as well as of Thomas himself as a person.

Youguys this is why i love TS. He knows exactly what to say. Even if it's a cover of an already wonderful song. Thomas always finds a way to make something his own and show the world how to be thensekves I cant thank this man enough. Now show the world who you are." Sanders Sides has always been an inspriation to me. Some of my writing, and my understanding of myself and the world branches off of his show. Thomas, if you read this, you should know that you've always given me something when i needed it most. Your vines showed me how to find joy in a tough situations; your morality helped me work things out with myself and figure out my own morality; your figure of anxiety gave me the courage to stand up to myself and better figure out, understand, and work through my own anxiety; your creativity not only inspired me mentally, but showed me the curse that it can be if turned in the wrong direction. Roman and Remus have been a sort of yin and yang in my little world of me, they showed me how to better process things i think about. Logan, logic. Logic is one of the things my world revolves around and when i say that you have made an impact on my life through logic im not kidding in the slightest. Logan gave me a sense of control in my life. He showed me how to properly process my thoughts, how to prove that im still md, how to ground myself back down to earth. Thomas, you, your mind, and your characters have gotten me out of my own head and into mh head. Ive escaped panic attacks because of Logan's counting exersize. Ive found solutions for myself through my own morality, ive batteld deciet and knowing when or if its excusable. There are parts of my life where I would watch any one of your videos just to ground myself and even lower parts of my life where your words have literally kelt me from dying. All I have to sag here is thank you. Thank you for your work. Thank you for unknowingly being one of the biggest parts of my life, one of my idols, one of my most cared for people. Good sir, you deserve to be in a history book. Thank you for getting me through so many bad things. Its because of you that i can look people in the eyes at school, its because of you that i had the courage to go out for the school play and now im the scarecrow in the wizard of oz. This is absolutely amazing, Thomas‼️ I’m pretty sure it’s not just me seeing the Sanders Sides correlation (which is absolutely cool,) I had a realization I’d like to share. At 1:56, I find the placing of the Side colors significant. Is it? Probably not, but let me elaborate. Patton and Janus, or Morality and Deceit is at the mouth. Morality stands for morals, and truth. Deceit stands for deception or lies. Lies are often told from the mouth, as well as the truth. Really, just words in general. Virgil is on the left side of Thomas’s head. What else goes on in your head? Thoughts, which can sometimes be anxious. Anxiety, which is what Virgil represents, is in the left side of your brain. What side is Virgil on? He’s on the left. On the other side of Thomas’s head, you see Roman. Roman represents creativity, which is in the right side of your head. What else goes on in your head? Thoughts, which can be creative. Down to Thomas’s ears, on the left side, you have Logan. Logan represents logical thinking, which just happens to be in the left side of your brain. On the right side, you have Remus. Remus is also creativity, as established for the first time in DWIT, which makes his placing on Thomas correlate with the side of the brain where creativity lies. On the topic of Logan and Remus, where are they located? Thomas’s ear. Almost all thoughts are based on things you’ve heard, seen, etc. Some things heard could inspire Remus’s nature as intrusive thoughts. Compared to Logan, who uses his knowledge, which can also be from things you’ve heard. Let’s go back to Roman and Virgil. Another thing I think of when seeing them at Thomas’s head/eyes, specifically the eyes, is ways of seeing life. Virgil being pessimistic, and Roman being more optimistic. Roman isn’t exactly always optimistic, but you get what I’m saying. This was mainly inspired by FWSA and the whole talking to Nico thing. ANYGAYS! I am going to say it, when Virgil sings "Gotta keep them laughing" at 02:37 made me realize on how that is what anxiety does. Its not all about pain and darkness, ita about trying to keep everyone around you from noticing your anxiety by deflection. I love this representation. There are no words that could accurately describe how this made me feel. You should feel proud for doing this and helping so many people with there struggles. Thank you for helping me throughout middle school and high school with dealing with emotions. Going into college I will continue to watch and learn more about emotions.

It depends on the system and alter to be honest. Some feel closer to the one they mask like so they don’t feel as forced, some feel fat and very different which either makes it difficult to the point of impossible or very forced. For some of us we’ll end up fronting without the knowledge of who we are because of masking. We’re not answering for OP this is just our experience as a system.

For us, we also don't have a host, and so it's less masking as a particular person and more masking as the singlet other people assume we are. It's a lot like when people assume we're cisgender (many of us aren't). It hurts. It's being seen as someone you aren't, yet a lot of the time we don't feel comfortable or safe being genuine because we don't know how people will treat us (and if they'll even believe us when we say we're plural). That's not to say that everything is terrible, or that we can't have relationships. But there's a barrier, there's parts of who we are that other people don't know (again, similar to not being out as trans).

I see a lot of people talking about the Virgil inspired character but there's one moment that I haven't seen many people talk about and it's at 1:14 where the Patton inspired character is looking at the camera saying "like me" in a begging way

I noticed that, it’s like he’s the heart who has so much love to give and just wants to be loved/liked back
He wants to be good, to not do anything wrong, and his hands' position reminds me of a prayer. He wants to be accepted, and (at least some) people will try to be perfect because they feel like they'll be accepted if they are.
The Logan-inspired one acting a little more mechanical did it for me too...
Sometimes Logic can be very cold and methodical, so having the circuts displayed was a nice touch
I keep coming back to watch this again, the part where the purple one says "I'm already strong and tough" means so much to me. Clearly he's like Virgil, he's like your anxiety and insecurities I'm sure. But the fact that he was the first one to say that is so meaningful.
"Trying to be bold without causing a fuss" is SUCH a beautiful beautiful line, and attributing it to Virgil, oh my gosh🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭 That fits his character and personality SO WELL!!!!! All of these lyrics are really really beautiful but that one really stood out to me. And the desperation on Patton's face during the "like me" part!! Whoa!! All of this is so gorgeous, and in a way, it's like a spiritual sequel to Recipe for Me--its message about authenticity is beautiful. I’ve always come to your videos when I’m having a hard time or especially questioning myself in who I’m attracted to and how I see myself with my gender. And this video speaks to me more than you think.
Just like you, I have all these different pieces of me that don’t particularly fit with each other. But you’re always teaching and reassuring me to be okay with them and not to be afraid of how I feel and who I am.

But I don't believe that this has any correlation to the Sides series, or really I don't think Thomas intended it to be a part of the canon. It is a clear color connection though.
Thomas has made a series of Instagram stories explaining the meaning of each of the colors which, even if roughly inspired by the Sides, are much different from them. I'll try to bring you a short summary of these, but you should definitely read the originals on his Instagram account.
Red is the performer but also his fashionable sense, how he wants to be seen as a whole person, not just the character he performs and also how he also wants to feel fashionably pretty like anybody else.
Yellow is the "Successful" facet, how he feels pushed to showcase his success to grow as a creator but at the same time he feels more like a liar in that sense because everything he makes he makes it for fun, not just for the numbers, so it's the facet he identifies less with.
Green is his want to feel sexy and physically attractive, at least from time to time, how he fears he can't showcase that facet of himself because of the type of content he makes, so eventually has to hide it.
Cyan: That's his internet persona, his happy, family-oriented, vlogger self as we see him in his videos, how he likes to be safe for any kids watching, but also feels he's a little too much encapsulated in that role and he would like to expand his range out of the family-oriented content at least sometimes.
Blue represents his activist-self, how when he discusses important real-life topics, he wants to have all the facts straight and not speak out of emotions, as well as not forgetting the privilige he speaks from.
Purple is a representation of mental illness and other darknesses he has to deal with, like he's mentioned anxiety and heartbreak in his content, but there are other things he's never discussed and he hopes if he ever discusses them it doesn't "mar" the way his audience view him online.

Sanders Sides has always been an inspriation to me. Some of my writing, and my understanding of myself and the world branches off of his show.
Thomas, if you read this, you should know that you've always given me something when i needed it most. Your vines showed me how to find joy in a tough situations; your morality helped me work things out with myself and figure out my own morality; your figure of anxiety gave me the courage to stand up to myself and better figure out, understand, and work through my own anxiety; your creativity not only inspired me mentally, but showed me the curse that it can be if turned in the wrong direction. Roman and Remus have been a sort of yin and yang in my little world of me, they showed me how to better process things i think about. Logan, logic. Logic is one of the things my world revolves around and when i say that you have made an impact on my life through logic im not kidding in the slightest. Logan gave me a sense of control in my life. He showed me how to properly process my thoughts, how to prove that im still md, how to ground myself back down to earth. Thomas, you, your mind, and your characters have gotten me out of my own head and into mh head. Ive escaped panic attacks because of Logan's counting exersize. Ive found solutions for myself through my own morality, ive batteld deciet and knowing when or if its excusable.
There are parts of my life where I would watch any one of your videos just to ground myself and even lower parts of my life where your words have literally kelt me from dying.
All I have to sag here is thank you. Thank you for your work. Thank you for unknowingly being one of the biggest parts of my life, one of my idols, one of my most cared for people. Good sir, you deserve to be in a history book.

Ive had so much trouble figuring out myself because I feel pressured to fit into the mold society expects of me. I feel like an imposter in my own skin most of the time. This is absolutely amazing, Thomas‼️ I’m pretty sure it’s not just me seeing the Sanders Sides correlation (which is absolutely cool,) I had a realization I’d like to share.
At 1:56, I find the placing of the Side colors significant. Is it? Probably not, but let me elaborate.
Patton and Janus, or Morality and Deceit is at the mouth. Morality stands for morals, and truth. Deceit stands for deception or lies. Lies are often told from the mouth, as well as the truth. Really, just words in general.
Virgil is on the left side of Thomas’s head. What else goes on in your head? Thoughts, which can sometimes be anxious. Anxiety, which is what Virgil represents, is in the left side of your brain. What side is Virgil on? He’s on the left.
On the other side of Thomas’s head, you see Roman. Roman represents creativity, which is in the right side of your head. What else goes on in your head? Thoughts, which can be creative.
Down to Thomas’s ears, on the left side, you have Logan. Logan represents logical thinking, which just happens to be in the left side of your brain.
On the right side, you have Remus. Remus is also creativity, as established for the first time in DWIT, which makes his placing on Thomas correlate with the side of the brain where creativity lies.
On the topic of Logan and Remus, where are they located? Thomas’s ear. Almost all thoughts are based on things you’ve heard, seen, etc. Some things heard could inspire Remus’s nature as intrusive thoughts. Compared to Logan, who uses his knowledge, which can also be from things you’ve heard.
Let’s go back to Roman and Virgil. Another thing I think of when seeing them at Thomas’s head/eyes, specifically the eyes, is ways of seeing life. Virgil being pessimistic, and Roman being more optimistic. Roman isn’t exactly always optimistic, but you get what I’m saying. This was mainly inspired by FWSA and the whole talking to Nico thing.

I am going to say it, when Virgil sings "Gotta keep them laughing" at 02:37 made me realize on how that is what anxiety does. Its not all about pain and darkness, ita about trying to keep everyone around you from noticing your anxiety by deflection.
I love this representation. There are no words that could accurately describe how this made me feel. You should feel proud for doing this and helping so many people with there struggles.
Thank you for helping me throughout middle school and high school with dealing with emotions. Going into college I will continue to watch and learn more about emotions.
