- We finally reach the end of the road in Prudhoe Bay Alaska. Our little caravan of Winnebago Revel 4x4's has finally made it. We have experienced wind, rain, snow, missing people, fires, nature, and wildlife. I think J.R.R. Tolkien says it best, " A Journey you do on your own, and adventure is best experienced with others." Hi John. You have to do the tour to go all the way to the Arctic Ocean to jump in due to security concerns but you can explore Prudhoe bay and see most of the things in the camp itself.

My trip to Alaska from the UK was in July 1995 and I loved the almost constant daylight, but not the mosquitos. But what stunned me were the high temps! So even in November, you can get beautiful days too. It was also good too see a bit of wildlife still existing beside all that machinery and the jarring presence of Man.

I forgot it was funny seeing the guys getting into the cold water. That’s like the polar bear club there! Lol! The wild life that was awesome seeing. That buffet looked good too! Out here no buffets are open but one. Since since Covid. I miss eating at buffets. One day they will all open up again in Vegas.
Yes that was is incredibly cold! But very few experience the opportunity to do that. The food up there was amazing!!!

24 years ago, my friend and former colleague wanted me to go with him to Predunce bay as a senior site manager and senior engineer to build incinerators and oil filtration equipment. Laugh, however, I had signed a contract just before that to build similar equipment in the Bering Sea oil fields. Was an important experience in my life, where I learned a lot, because at that time the company Flour Daniel, had made many mistakes, which we had to eliminate on site. Building a 60" pipeline and flare gas line in the winter is not so easy. We needed big truck cranes, 500 ton crane, is not so small. The roads, worst roads, you could only drive heavy vehicles in the winter. Laugh, our " official car", was an Ural truck and in addition 4 x 400 liter tanks, the engine was never turned off. Lach, good food and lots of vodka kept us warm. Was a very nice time, very great people, Russians, Americans and Germans, we built the big ones. Is past and I hope one understands each other in the future again, as in the past.

The beginning shots sweeping across the vast Alaskan landscape, looking from centerline back really does speak to the inner reminiscence of not only you, but your fellow travelers as well. Then to see the camera pan to the front we get a strong sense that we’re now focusing on what lies ahead having paid homage to the path already traveled, further reinforced by the fade in from black which feels a lot like one’s eyes opening up to take in what lies before them, which in this case is the transition to a van not moving. Stasis. And Jim, we really need to discuss your choice to not use the tent hold-down chords. Given the wind, it’s pretty much a necessity.
Are those small things along the road some sort of odd-looking light that only comes up five feet or so? I can’t understand why such a thing would be used. Are they just reflectors? I’ve never seen something like them in use so I don’t know what they are.
I love that you’ve been able to see so much wildlife in this video after having gone without for so long. Do you have bats up there to feast on your State Bird the mosquito? Seems to me that they’d love to have the unlimited food source up there.
I heard one of your fellow travelers say, “It’s not salty at all, weird.” I would have never guessed that the Arctic Ocean would be any less salty than any other ocean. I know that freshwater floats on top of salt water. Is there a glacier or freshwater stream near that location that could account for the lack of salinity? I’ve been miles off the coast of Washington/Oregon where the Columbia dumps into the Pacific and dipped a cup into the “ocean” and drank fresh water from the Columbia. It’s an odd quirk of water.
I’m actually not at all surprised by the good food at the end of the Dalton Highway. Every General knows that troops march on their stomachs. If they’re well fed they’ll do better. Same goes for big business like oil. Keep the workers content when it comes to food, and they’ll still gripe and complain, but they won’t walk off the work site. $8.63 a gallon for Diesel is truly painful. We’re at $5.00 right now here in southern Missouri.
It was great seeing the block heater plug-ins there in the parking lot. I had to use them in Minot every winter, and even here in Missouri for a few weeks when we’re down in the single digits so that my 7.3-liter diesel will actually start. I had this clueless kid come up to me in Seattle enquiring about the plug sticking out of the front of my pickup. I told him that it was my electric plug-in, which technically isn’t a lie. He thought my pickup was battery-powered. I just chuckled and let him go on believing that.
I loved seeing that it was 60 degrees up there at 8 pm.
I loved the J.R.R. Tolkien quote. What makes one curious is whether or not new roads are being put in somewhere in Alaska to get people to places they’ve never been before? It’s such an expansive State that has the least amount of roads. Seems to me that more of it ought to be explored.
You’ve put together a fantastic series you two. I’m proud of you for all that you’ve achieved in it.
We didn't have our tent stakes with us since it was just a dummy tent! We put rocks in there but it was absolutely not enough. Those are reflectors on the side of the road to mark the edges during near whiteout conditions. When the wind and snow are blowing it is an absolute necessity. We have them many places throughout the state to help travelers stay on the road.
We wish we had bats but they don't exist up here. I am pretty sure it is due to the cold but couldn't say for sure. They would definitely have plenty to feast on during the summer months even if it was just a short migration north. I would guess maybe it has to do with Ice melt. Maybe that water floats on top and is what refreezes in the winter?
We were actually expecting the fuel prices up there to be a little higher. We are well above 5.00 in most of the towns and as you get more remote the prices just continue to go higher. We have a 40 gallon tank now so we can pick and choose where we stop for fuel a little bit more.
We were so lucky with the weather up there. Made the experience even better for those traveling up. They have talked about adding some additional roads but I don't know if it will ever happen. The cost and risk to the environment is much greater than the value to most places I think. We hope you have a great week Brian!

We slowed things down for people who generally travel at a much faster pace and that changed how they were able to experience this great state.

Good evening, The Revel has held up perfectly in all of the terrains we have taken it through. We have no intention of trading it out anytime soon. We have really really enjoyed the mods we have done to it but they are not all necessary depending on how you plan to use the van.

Those are reflective markers that help you see the edge of the road in a near whiteout snowstorm.

What are the rods along the highway ? what is their purpose?
I am guessing you are talking about the markers for the side of the road. When we have heavy snow and wind it allows you to see where the edge of the road is in near white out conditions.
