OMG, Bert! I was in your video. That was me in the rainbow crocks, on the plane. You followed me out into FIA. I live in Oklahoma, and rotate every three weeks. I wish I would have seen you, I would have probably fan boyed out! Me and my wife LOVE your family so much. Thank you for sharing so much with us.
Everyone can breath now, Dads home! Mom is happy, life is happy, daughters are happy,the house is at peace n Garret is learning great things from Dad..in the every day... Balance is restored, once again..."Dad is home"!
Bert, thanks for sharing where the oil field workers would stay, eat, and the store. The look on Evelynn's face when Bert and Jessica were hugging was priceless.
There is also a Deadhorse Holler in Ky!! back in the day use to be the local beerjoint, and people would race cars there. The backwards car race was the best, cause the road was real curvy. Now there is not much there!
Dad, 3 brothers, my late husband, 2 sons all worked the Slope. The early 70s when things were just getting rolling we’re a whole different place from today. Still, it IS unique! Thanks for sharing what’s happening now!
Valdez -the terminus, such amazing memories when they didn’t even close Thompson Pass so I drove thru at midnight one January to pick up hubby at camp - with many monster-size trucks who prob didn’t even see me as they rebuilt the road…at 35 be.ow. The stories we could tell up here….
The scenery is phenomenal... prices are random. Some items are within range and others are sky high. Gas is about the same as CA. Loved being part of your trip! Thank you!
The difference is the cost of gas up there is all economics, in Cali it's all tax/socialism. Up in Prudhoe there's a legitimate reason for the price, in Cali it's just to line your champagne communist leaders pockets.
@@willcresson8776 it’s not socialism in California! Do you think if socialism, communism, humanism, or whatever other -ism there is in California, prices would be so high? It’s because California has for many decades been a ridiculously desirable place to live. At least on the coast. Perfect climate, for one. So they drive up the cost of living to ridiculously high rates to keep the rich there, drive the poor out, and make the middle class live on the fringes. Population control. Socialism is about equality for all with everybody just living comfortably and not much else. California is hardly the place.
I don't know why but I was so emotional watching this video....I know Jess was so happy and those kids pure plum attacked you when you got in the door...You are definitely inspirational and refreshing....
Bert, whoever it was that you met that said you guys are inspirational are spot on! Its a blessing to watch you and your family grow and share your lives with us Happy Peoples!
This family is definitely a blessing everyone I haven't met them personally but feels like we know them watching them and following them. It's awesome how they include their children. Their love for God is so evident. Such a blessing for sure. 😊
Well that brought back memories ! My wife and I have a photo in front of that store from a road trip up there in 2010. New Mexico to Deadhorse and back, 5 weeks and 10,000 miles. Gas was about the same, if I recall. Inside of the store hasn’t changed much either. Spent a couple days in Fairbanks, and of course visited the Santa Claus house in North Pole. My mom got one of the “square inch” deeds from her uncle back many decades ago. We found the park, and sent her a photo. Thank you for these videos, and god bless you and your family !
Such an interesting place. Surprised at the camps but probably shouldn't have been since it's so remote. Thanks for sharing your experiences! Glad you made it safely back home. 🙂
I worked up there on and off for 34 years. Started in 1979 and left the the last time in 2013. Also worked at a pump station for over 6 years working two weeks on two weeks off. All except my last six years of work were traveling away from home. Some jobs took me all over the state.
~~~ Bert ,, yes people wait to see your videos. And in every state people know your family picture. More people day\dream about moving to Alaska because of your family videos..Bert everyone LOVES you..
You are inspirational! What a testimony your life is because you don't try to proselyte. You just live normally and conviction speaks for itself. Thank you for your transparency and honesty.
Loved the 🎶music in this video and Bert sharing his time with us in Dead Horse...I miss your family like it was mine...I don't think you know how much we all love the Somers family you are truly a blessing to watch...especially while the world is going crazy the Somers bring us some "normalcy" ❤ ❤❤❤❤
Bert, Thanks for the Ride-a-long! Anywhere that you go, is a breath of fresh air! (Even if it's a "minute" getting away from the fires, floodings, hurricane, drive-bys and so and so on..
Oof, stuff is expensive there. Interesting how the "camp" is the only location to get a fresh meal. At least you were able to add your sticker to the wall 😁
Loved the tour. My husband used to work there. I have 2 brothers working there now. I kept looking at all the faces just in case they were in the crowd lol.
Having been to Barrow 26 times and having landed in Prudhoe a few times but never got off of the plane.....I am thankful to have The Man home back in the lower 48 and WAY closer to home! Greetings from Central Idaho and right now the land of the Big Smoky Everything.
Wow! Your video takes me all the way back to 1985 when I met a guy and moved up to Seattle. When I got there, we immediately got jobs at a cannery way up in Chignik! It took 3 planes to make it up there. I ended up coming back to Washington to wait for him because conditions were just too harsh for me. His whole family was in the fishing business. His niece was the wife of Dave Rundall, who was lost along with his whole crew from the Arctic Rose. Such memories!
that was so sweet, the last few minutes when you got home. i know the feeling of being back with the most important things in life. i liked being away doing my job, but i loved coming home even more.
Thanks for sharing. I was there the second week of January because I wanted to see a real Arctic Winter. I stayed at Brooks Camp and went to the store a few times, and walked from Brooks Camp to the Aurora one time. When I walked to the Aurora and back it was -38F with a -55F wind chill. Later in the day it was -36F but it got windier, so it was -67F with the windchill. I was just there as a tourist, and I loved it.
In the late 70s / early 80s, the store the bus went to on Wednesdays , was called ‘Childs’. It had lots of stuff, how giddy and excited we were to get on the weekly bus to Child’s !
I clearly enjoyed your video I got so involved that when you got in the door at home I had tears of happiness for you because I know what it's like to be away and come home to your family God bless you all 💖
So, my city self never even thought about what an oil field operation as far as staff/ daily living would look like. Thank you for showing us around. You learn something new every day!
Really interesting to see how the camp works! Thanks for the walk thru of the store - for where it is and what it is, the prices were about what I'd expect. I kinda think those canned cocktail nuts with that decent layer of dust on top were ever so slightly past their freshness date... 😄
Thanks for showing us the store. That was very cool. I also loved the look Evelyn gave you guys when you hugged. I felt the same way at her age. All I could do is smile.
Thanks mate. I went there as part of a cruise package with Princess Cruises. I must say, as an Aussie, it was Polar opposite to where I live, LITERALLY but an experience I’m SO tempted to do again. As a bike rider I still cherish the beanie and balaclava I bought in the store for our “Winters” in Australia. Lol. Thanks for letting me relive it.
The explanation of the oil fields and showing us what it looks like was so interesting. I had no idea that was what that area was like. So happy you shared, I learned a lot.
I really miss Barrow and Deadhorse. I lived in barrow for 10 years but my dad and brother would drive the ice road from barrow to deadhorse frequently. Most of my family has worked in deadhorse over the years.
You know you are far north when there are no trees! When we were in camp we looked forward to mail days - that's when you got a care package from home - something as simple as moose jerky or a box of candies made your final weeks of work bearable.
Thank you for going to the small store and showing us the prices. Even then Car heart. Then telling us how they keep warm. I have been wondering that for a while. Thanks for all your videos. I love your family.
Welded up there in the late 80’s early 90’s. Land of the midnight sun! Always worked with one or more people so when I had my hood down welding someone would be on the lookout to prevent a polar bear ambush.
Thank you for this, my cousin lives up there... And I appreciate people like you just thank you for sharing all of this .... Your channel with family members who aren't necessarily able to be up there to see their loved ones...
Happy Monday, SOMERS. I hope you are having a good day. September is coming up On Wednesday, and the fall season will get underway. Much love and support to you SOMERS. No idea of 'oil camp life' so that was an eye opener. Some beautiful and rugged country out of the plane windows. Interesting as I will never see it in real life. Dad was surely missed!
How can people afford to live? $34.00 for a bottle of Tide ($23.00), & a bottle of Downy($11.00). I couldn't afford to wash my clothes. Gas $5.98. A can of Pringles $11.00? Did I see that right? Those prices were steep. Kind of makes me want to adopt a family to send them snacks. How much was the Coke? Thank you Burt for showing us. You are so wonderful. Hello Jessica, Audrey, Evelyn, & Garret. So good to see you folks!
Prices are like that because of the cost of transporting the goods so far north. The end buyer winds up paying for shipping essentially or else the store wouldn’t be able to afford to stay open. Kind of the same reason gas/diesel is so expensive in Alaska. The people that are working the Alaskan oil fields are being paid very well for being so remote.
Prices are way higher in Alaska and Hawaii due to transport cost. It's an oil field town, it's just the workers and they are paid very well. That's why people are willing to do it, the money.
Wow, those prices out there were pretty high. The ones you showed us are double the prices they are here in Tennessee. Glad you had a good and safe trip too! Its always nice to get back home and to the family again.
3 are referred to as "hotels", everything else is referred to as "camp", the 3 hotels are owned by T.J., owner of Ice services. I was their loader operator there at SA10, the borough building by the water plant. Been running equipment on lease for 14 years, seen some nasty winters, moved countless metric tons of snow..."pennies from heaven" as I call it. Glad you made the trip, the haul road is a killer trip if you make the time to camp along the way...some of the best scenery next to Sitka and Valdez
I have subscribed to your channel, it's quite interesting sir. Well done showing us that watch your channel how life is in Alaska. Thanks for sharing your story.
Shopped that store when I made a road trip to AK via the AlCan highway back in 2016. They do have everything! The store clerk's hometown turned out to be less than 100 miles from my own (I'm from Montana)!
Cool video, I was up there in 2018 brought back a few memories we road up on motorcycles and put our feet in the Beaufort Sea/Arctic Ocean. Yes we saw that anyone we came in contact with in Deadhorse was very friendly. Take care....
Alaska is such a B-E-A-UTIFUL place, a land of wonders... Hi happy people's! Hope you all are having an awesome day. Thanks for showing your videos❤️. I brought a North face Jacket coat with a thin lining, it was $280. Buy another coat over the jacket to stay warmer. The pricing overall wasn’t out of the normal too much. In the states we can go bargain shopping but I see there are NO options there. However, can you order online for shopping deals?
Greetings!😁. Wow....those rugged mountains covered with that snow was just Awesome!😲. The shirt you bought is cute😁, the pink hat is pretty, the puzzle is cool (I love putting together puzzles)😁....bought my daughters so many puzzles and now puzzles for my grandchildren too!😁🥰, and the stuff animal is adorable!😁. Glad you made it back home safe! God Bless y’all family and all your followers!🥰
Interesting video ,those happy peoples were right you guys are inspirational . Those snow covered mountains looked awesome , and Evelyns face at the end was priceless .
It was breathtaking to see the ice and snow Mountains from the airplane window. The camp seems depressing hope folks enjoy their time there. Because there is inly a few who get to see that area! Glad you home! ♥️
They set up similar camps out here in West Texas. They call them "Man Camps" out here. They do it here because there isn't alot of available housing out here in many of the smaller towns close to where much of the fields are operating.
the views from the plane of the mountains were so beautiful made my day!
The snow on the mountain was awesome. Evelyn’s look when you & Jessica were hugging…. Priceless. 🤣
I laughed out loud when I saw her face 🤣😂Agree that it was priceless!
Yeah I was cracking like crazy with her look too hahhahaha
The gifts were a hit! I loved seeing Evelyn's face watching You and Jessica cuddle upon arrival home. 😎😇👍🙏🏻❣️🤗
Holy moly to the prices in that store and the gas prices! Glad you got back home safely Bert!
Gotta remember everything is trucked in or flown in Prudhoe bay is kind of a logistical nightmare compared to like Anchorage
When you work the slope, you gladly pay those prices .
My mom remembers being in Deadhorse, AK when she worked the oil fields. I asked my mom about it the other day.
Camps are very Common. I did live in a place in Sk Canada we didn't have camps . If you have no camps you get a housing allowance .
Camp environment is a serious problem particularly for native women in North Dakota. Not nearly as regulated as Prudoe appears to be.
So precious When the kids hugged Burt when he came home ❤️❤️❤️.:. And how much he loves his family
I love Ice Road Truckers. I think the motto for Deadhorse is "A Town that far with no bar"
I got a good laugh at Evelyn's face when you and Jessica were hugging!
Love seeing these Rural parts of Alaska. So interesting. Thank You for sharing.
Those snow-capped mountains when seen from the air remined me of oragami.
Thanks for showing your videos❤️. I brought a North face Jacket coat with a thin lining, it was $280. Buy another coat over the jacket to stay warmer. The pricing overall wasn’t out of the normal too much. In the states we can go bargain shopping but I see there are NO options there. However, can you order online for shopping deals?
Always fun to see a video from your family. Thanks for sharing about Alaska!
They set up similar camps out here in West Texas. They call them "Man Camps" out here. They do it here because there isn't alot of available housing out here in many of the smaller towns close to where much of the fields are operating.
