- Harmony Gold is (in some ways) responsible for more anime than you might expect. Let people like things.
Unless those things are these Robotech Defenders kits. They're pretty not great.
(Note: there's a slight audio blip at the 9:00 mark, which was not caught prior to the go-live. Seems like a DaVinci issue, since the issue isn't in the timeline and there's no edits at that point that could have caused it. I love the software, but it does have a few quirks...sorry friends!)

Oh I have little issue with Robotech back when it game out, 'cept for when it contradicts itself for no reason. My problem is with Harmony Gold in the *present* specifically, though the most recent arrangement with Big West will finally allow the rest of Macross to break into the west properly.

Glad to see a video focused on the model kits. I recently began buying these kits for the sole purpose of beefing out my Southern cross section of my robotech display.
As a kid of the 80's this was fun. Also you just don't even know how much we all loved Robotech and wanted more of it. For a short time it really was just as popular as Star Wars.
I don't really hate Robotech per se, I just hate Harmony Gold, for everything they've done to cling on to Robotech and draw blood from a stone.
Not to mention completely block the rest of Macross from coming to the west

Although born in the USA, I grew up overseas in south east Asia during the 1980s, so was on the front line of all these anime models series coming out. It was an amazing time. Was surprised to see them rebranded when I got back to the states, but was still happy to get the models for awhile. However the Japanese storylines are superior to the US ones.

So I still have one of the Robotech Defender kits still holding up since I got it in mid 80s. The kit you where showing in this video so at a IPMS show back in july and it was selling for around 60 since no one is doing this type of mold anymore. I commend you on making this video. I remember eps 1 of Robotech being broadcast on ABC at 7:30am on a saturday just before all the other cartoon kick in.

A few points of contradiction - Revell might have been first to *use* Robotech for their "Defenders" models, but Matchbox was the ultimate original "owner" of the Robotech name, for similar anime toys. Matchbox reached an "agreement" with Harmony Gold to share the name for the American cartoon series. Matchbox had already grabbed the toy "license" from Takatoku Japan to sell Macross toys in the US. Matchbox never received any reboxed VF - 1 "Valkyrie" transforming fighter jets, not any of the molds to make them. Mb planned on making their own larger version of the VF-1, as they had the other toys coming in from Takatoku. Matchbox got outsmarted by Hasbro when they also "bought" the "rights" to several Takatoku toy lines to merge into their"Transformers" universe ; including Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Diaclone, Dorvack, along with the Convertors, and "Mini cons" toys. Hasbro beat Matchbox to market with their Transformers "Jetfire" redress of the Macross VF - 1S "Hikaru Ichigo custom" and this blocked any plans by Matchbox to make their own lookalike transforming VF - 1 toy, with their own tooling and molds already started they simply removed or reduced the transforming mechanisms and made a fixed shape airplane toy to fit the 3 3/4" scale of the action figures.
As for Harmony Gold... many "fans" hate them either for butchering Macross, or for "barring" further Macross anime / products from reaching the markets they controlled (esp. North America). Carl Maček is often singled out for his production of "Robotech", but think of what his alternatives actually were : Sit on Macross and continue to sell a few video tapes of the series - or mash it together with something that would pay for conversion to English : *syndication* . Unfortunately Minmay's songs were licensed mostly separately, so American audiences got they same few repeatative songs converted to English. Carl Macek did the best with what Harmony Gold gave him, he didn't run the company, he didn't sign the "rights" deals with Tatsunoko Productions (on behalf of Studio Nue/Artland and Big West prod.) - Carl just made a show that many Americans still love, because it would use more that all the material Harmony Gold had sitting around doing next to nothing. It is Ahmed and Frank Agrama that signed those deals and run Harmony Gold, that had till two years ago sued everyone and anyone that tried bringing any Macross to America - direct your anger where it is due, not at Carl, who is dead and gone.

Hell yeah! Another great video. Watching Voltron and Robotech helped me become the person that I am today by incurring my ridiculous backlog/debt and anime knowledge that I have! Wait a minute....
I saw a bunch of Robotech on DVD when I was little. Already being into Transformers and fighter jets in general I was mesmerised by what were essentially F-14 Tomcats that could turn into giant robots and in between

It would be interesting to see a video about the years of unjustified lawsuits harmony gold has with the battletech and other franchises, going so far as to sue them over designs that harmony gold no longer has the rights to. As this video seems to gloss over why people dislike them with the nondescript blanket statement of online toxicity. But hearing about how the TV show actually together was very interesting.

While BadGunpla did indeed "gloss over" the sometimes ridiculous lawsuits Harmony Gold has filed over the years, to be fair it would take a "business insider" to describe half of them or what they were about. The HG lawsuit against Battletech was especially stupid, as you mentioned it was for mech designs outside of Harmony Gold's license, and they had once had agreed to allow Battletech to use a few others. Same goes for the eventual lawsuit against FASA games - they once worked with HG, only to get burned later. On the other hand - Harmony Gold *did* (and now does again) have "exclusive license" for Super Dimension Fortress Macross outside of Japan / Asia - someone trying to bring Macross anime or products to North America or Europe was in direct violation of that licensing agreement with Tatsunoko Productions (who it had been argued should never held "subsidiary" licensing rights in the first place, all those "rights" belong to Big West on behalf of Studio Nue - see how complicated it gets?). Harmony Gold had a duty to protect what was in writing as their "licensing rights", where they went far wrong was suing over things beyond what was written - like international distribution of further Macross series, or other licensees using "Macross". All of that is definitely beyond the scope of things discussed in this video. And also immaterial now with the "new" clarifications handed down by Big West productions "renewal" of Harmony Gold's licensing agreement - Mainly that any series produced *after* Super Dimension Fortress Macross is to be made available "world wide", and that Sony can work with Harmony Gold on a "live action" Robotech movie, also to be available "world wide" (including Japan).
My only REAL issue with Harmony Gold is that, because of them, we missed out on having Super Robot Wars Alpha on the Dreamcast in the US.
Also, being scummy abusers of our legal system. That's never okay.

Robotech was the first anime I ever watched, before I could even walk. I’m glad it exists, if for no other reason than being my gateway into this wild world of giant robots.
Nice! I also enjoy watching Robotech on DVD and without Robotech or Macross with their transforming mechs, we would've not have the later Gundam series like Zeta (my favorite) and Wing.

While I do agree that Harmony Gold played a major role in influencing Anime in the west- I still have a hard time with them as they locked Macross and its sequels/spinoffs from coming over proper due to their stubbornness to let the franchise go and their inability to DO anything with the said IPs.

Great stuff Jason. I grew up in these days. And I personally like both, the ROBOTECH side and the individual source anime.
My dad was the one that introduced me to robotech, I kind of saw a Robotech is a dead franchise because Harmony gold was just sitting on it and doing nothing with it, at least until sony stepped in and got big west and harmony gold to finally come to an agreement.

NGL, frickin' love Robotech for what it is. Robotech is one of the reasons Anime flourished in the west after all.

Robotecha biggest sin in “true anime” fans eyes is that it was successful. Pretty much all anime at that time translated for the states(and all the stuff that came in the 70s) was “adapted” to American audiences. Honestly Robotech, for all it’s faults, at least kept a lot of the themes of the series it adapted. They also didn’t shy away from death. Characters died in Robotech which was and honestly still is unheard of animated shows for “kids”.

One of the model companies released under the GoBots license cyclone battle armor and the second version of The Valkyrie the cyclone battle armor was labeled as cycle and the second version of the valkyrie was leader one now how they got away with that licensing is beyond me
Monogram had the Mospeada Ride Armor model they called Cy-kill. The Legioss fighter model was labeled Leader-1. It has nothing to do with the Valkyrie. It's called a Legioss.

Robotech is my childhood, although as a child I was really confused while watching the last 2 parts since they looked totally different from the first part. Everything make sense now.
