I started building cuz i was depressed, and getting worse due to my own.....problems. I watched toy reviews and someone reviewed gunpla and i wanted to try out the hobby. I used it to keep my mind away from my pains, gave me a reason to feel accomplished again, and actually saved me from a more permanent solution. Most imporantly, gunpla brought me into a community that i wouldn’t give for the world.

Welcome to the madhouse! I recently turned 50! I've been building Gunpla for @ 15 years now, and models in general for @ 45 +/- years. The thing I love about Gunpla is that you can do pretty much anything with it. Right now, I'm in the acquisition stage of 2 themed builds:
      1) A "Magnificent Seven/Seven Samurai" mashup using MG kits and heavy customization.
      2) A Zeon Spec Ops team using MG kits with moderate-heavy customization. Now, if the RE/100 Zaku II Kai kits I pre-ordered would show up...

I just got the HG (1/144) MS-06S Char's Zaku II (Red Comet version) from Gundam The Origin, and I've been comparing it to the previous HG Zaku II kits (the oldest I have is from the dual kit boxing w/ the RX+79(G), from 1996 , while the newest is the MS-06Fz Kai from 2008), and this new kit is absolutely light years removed from the old kits. Truly a joy to build.

I *would* display my kits in funky poses but i lack the space especially as my two displays, currently, are HGUC kits of all MS from 0079 & Zeta.
0079 is complete barring potential Revive kits in the future while my Zeta collection is only missing 13 kits which are the purple Rick Dias, both Titans Mk2s, all 3 AEUG Mk2s + the Flying Armor & G-Defensor that the older two include, OG Hyaku-Shiki + the version with the Mega Bazooka, OG Qubeley & the four who don't have kits yet, those being the pink & grey Baund Docs, Bolinoak Samahn & Psyco 2.
The grey Baund Doc is likely to be P-Bandai making it only the 3rd MSZG exclusive alongside the AEUG GM 2 & pink Base Jabber. (Zeta variants don't count, one was referencing the 90s HG & the other is the ZZ version)

Started building 5 years ago, when I was 9. No rhyme nor reason. I just saw Toonami airing Gundam 00 and I asked my mom to buy me an AG Dynames just cuz I saw it in the shelves. That was my initial dive. I stopped for a few years after building 20+ HGs in my first year and got back into the swing of it yet again(currently at 20+, mostly MGs). Why you ask? Why spend so much money on plastic robots? Cuz they're fuckin awesome that's why. But that's not all. There is just something so zen and addicting about spending countless hours laboring on a badass looking robot full of awesome weapons and gimmicks while optionally listening to your favorite podcast/music. It's hard to describe what truly makes you fall in love with this hobby, but you know it when you feel it. Millions of people have millions of reasons why they do this, but all of them share one thing in common. They love the feeling of building something from nothing, and seeing it form something awesome.

I started building gunpla after seeing my friends builds and being heavily depressed and bored due being house bound for medical reasons.
She encouraged me to start out with an RG kit as I used to modify car engines and enjoy fiddly things.
2 years later, 70+ kits, a huge backlog and an expressive outlet for my mental and psychical problems.
I'm in a much better place with a new hobby that's replaced track drifting and gaming.
In some ways these little plastic robots saved me and even helped me when one of best friends died. They allowed me to switch off my brain and do something productive and relaxing.
I don't know how long I'll be with the hobby, but the community around it is mostly amazing and supportive (except when Bandai don't release something they like).
I often share my builds and get alot of positive FB, I think I've only ever got 1 of this "Tip" type comments on my 3rd build. It was panel lining and basic detailing which i now share it with any new builder as a way to extend build time and cheaply improve the finish if desired.

This video spoke to me, I recently just got Into the hobby and I saw all the amazing gbwc builds and was discouraged a little thinking I will never be that good. After listening I now know that as long as I continue to build and I do the best I can, all that matters is if I myself like it and not anyone else.

When I first started this hobby 5 months ago I would watch videos from different GBWC's and just be in awe of how fantastic the builds are. I too would say to myself, "I will NEVER be that good!". But I remembered that these builders didn't get that good overnight. We all have to start somewhere.
I'm on my 9th build and I can see the progress I've made with each kit. Heck, I haven't done a straight build since building my first Gunpla because I want to challenge myself and get better each time I put a kit together. Gunpla is freedom!

All joking aside, I’m pretty sure I’ve told you this story before on the discord, but I credit you, your community, and this hobby as the main reason I’m alive right now. I was in a pretty dark place a bit over a year ago and then I got recommended one of your live streams, The RG Zeta Highlights to be exact, and that introduced me to your community. Everyone was so nice and supportive, and that social interaction with other people that were interested in similar things, people that I could joke around with and vent to, that really kept me sane. I don’t see many people outside of work and school so it’s nice to have the Gunpla community. Even Gundummies wouldn’t be around without the amazing Gunpla community. So thanks Jason. This was an amazing nine minutes of you pouring your heart, soul, and love for this hobby into a video. I dare say your love for this hobby surpasses that of Riku, you actually have a reason for it.

I built my first gunpla as a kid, thinking I was buying a cool toy from the '90s show. I was disappointed from a moment, discovering it had to be built. The pleasure I got from actually assembling it was immense though and it then became one of my favourite toys, because "I made it"
Growing up, I wanted to feel that again. That's why I build gunplas.

I remember my first gunpla, a Master Grade RX 78, at the age of 9. My dad and I thought it was a toy, but boy were we wrong. It was quite an experience cutting them out with a scissors, and I never even considered sanding or painting, and had to do it alone. Took 2 days to put it together. It's different to experience the hobby at such a young age, the impatience and lack of proper tools, while also not knowing where to obtain said tools, makes the hobby a lot less enjoyable, frustrating even considering the difficulty of the kit. The part about it being "your work" however, hits true at any age. Being the ignorant child I was, I treated the model kit like a toy, but it was because I liked what I had made, and it was short lived. If nothing else it taught me to be careful with things I liked to ensure they last longer. The frustration from my first kit ensured I didn't buy another kit until decades later when I learnt of different grades. My first HG was far more pleasant.

Hats off good sir! I just recently got into the hobby. To me building gunpla is the best experience I've ever had. The feeling is like the joy when you finally finish a big jigsaw puzzle. It's like having your own lego kit. It's like taking your firstever epic photograph using your newly bought camera. It's an experience so good, words will never be enough to describe it. Gunpla saved me from depression. While others strive to remove all the nubmarks and imperfections of their kits? I love them. To me it's like a battle scar. It's an achievement. Forget the negative things and all the criticisms. What matters is you are happy with what you do.

I started with a HGUC 1/144 scale Sazabi and it blew my mind how happy i was when it was finished. I couldn't believe how something from a tv screen turned into a living moving thing. I gotta say i never felt so accomplished making something. I sat back and could see it vividly flying around weightlessly in space during chars counterattack. I soon built a Zaku 2 FZ from stardust and a original Gouf. I was also blown way by how inexpensive they are. And even at there size they blow me way with detail.

I only recently started building Gunpla, I have 2 finished and working on my third. I used to play Warhammer but never quite liked building the Warhammer kits, Yet still had the itch from long ago to build model kits. I think the itch comes from me as a kid 30 years ago building lego and plastic model kits with my dad, And the itch never quite went away and Warhammer never quite managed to scratch it...
Then a few months ago a friend started building Gunpla kits and after looking at his stuff and talking about it for a ocuple of months, I got my first Gunpla kit, The Entry Grade Lah Gundam. And I fell in love with it, Quickly moved up to High Grades and am currently assembling the Gundam Aerial and got 2 more waiting for assembly, With a GM sitting on my desk next to the Lah Gundam.

Now in 2018 ive picked up some (far too many) new kits, a new airbrush, a new set of paints and im loving it more than i ever did before. I feel the time i took away from it, allowed me to figure out different techniques and the new kits i build are over 9000... times better. Ive even been redoing the paint and detail on my old kits which i used to think were great. Love this hobby

Some time ago me and my pal went on a small road trip in my state. When we got to our destination we stopped at a comic shop. As we were looking through the store he saw a gunpla on the shelf that kinda looked like a transformer and if I remember right it was a GM cold type. He was a bit hard pressed for cash and I had a suitable amount so I said go ahead man I got you. Time passes and he built it and was showing off the process and the finished product. As he was showing me his model I got hit with the feeling of, “…well… I wanna be included…” and soon after I went to my local hobby/game shop and looked for one to buy and build. I should note that neither of us actually have seen the show at that point. As I looked around I saw the Zaku II, it looked cool, the box was a thinner than most so it figured it was a simple build, and the mono eye looked endearing. And since then it’s been my favorite hobby of mine. I have roughly 40 of them with like 80% of em completed and growing.

I was poor growing up, so all the kits I was bought throughout my childhood whether it be gundam or zoids were bootleg or older models on a for sale bin. So I had a fear that if I bought a gundam model it’ll come out flimsy and not that great looking. But in 2014 when I bought my first ever gundam which was a master grade wing ver ka I got hooked I took my time and made it look nice. My second kit was the nu ver ka which started my addiction. I put Atleast 40 hours on it and I was happy. 6 years later here I am with a bunch of kits happy as can be. This hobby really took me out of my depression and sparked a new interest that I’m sure will never go away! Thanks for this video

I Started to build Gunpla just 2 years ago. More precisely July 27th 2016 with my first model being HG Wing Zero. The world of Gunpla and Gundam is so HUGE it definitely takes a newbie to catch up. Honestly, I have no idea how I didn't run into gunpla way earlier in my life. Really wish that was the case as I would have used my money just in this hobby and not in PC/Mobile games I would eventually stop playing forever. I had nothing to do besides studying, watching an occasional anime and taking care of my mom. The very same day I found about gunpla I bought the HG wing zero(yup boyz, CN wing era blah blah) in a rush because I was fascinated with the idea of building a toy figure. Ordered some basic tools from ebay and once I had everything and finished my first kit, I was amazed AF. Today I own half of the current RG line, All Wing MGs and some HGs. The gunpla community is one of the best out there, love seeing everybody's builds and custom kits. Gunpla cures depression too hehe!.

If I had to pinpoint my beginnings with Gunpla, it’d have to be with an article about the dismantling of the RX-78-2 statue in Odaiba that I read during my shift at a college radio station. Now, I’d known about Gundam beforehand, I remember seeing ads for Superior Defenders back when I was little, but somehow, this clicked with me. I wanted an RX-78-2 of my own. That’s how I found Gunpla, and a year or so later, I picked up a High Grade MK. II and put it together over the course of a Friday. I was just so struck by how cool it looked as it came together, how the foil stickers in the eyes gleamed when the light caught them just right, and I knew I had discovered something special. One year and six kits later, that rush of seeing a kit come together and enjoying how photogenic they are never gets old, and the community surrounding them is just so wonderful, I can’t see myself stopping anytime soon.

This is a helpful video, I came across Gunpla only a couple days ago and was immediately interested, but I did what I do with every potential hobby and I researched obsessively so I can build a reasonable roadmap of progression, in this case, ending at customized kits in dioramas and such.
Overwhelmed by the information I was taking in, how to most efficiently reach perfection, and worrying about failure I almost gave up (like I have done with so many potential hobbies in the past).
I just watched this and thought what the hell, threw my plan away, deleted all my bookmarks, bought a basic model tool kit, and a high-grade RX-87-2.
It's arriving in a few days and I cannot wait, the thought of butchering it has left me completely already.
    Thanks for the jump start.

I just started building Gunpla. I actually attempted to make one as a kid and it was to difficult for me at the time and so I gave up on it. But now being a grown adult I sought revenge for my younger self and I went out and got one to build. The process was almost therapeutic at times! I completely understand what you mean about forgetting the issues of the day and just being able to focus on your build. Since building that kit it inspired me to watch SEED which I actually enjoyed very much and am already planning my next builds. Spoilers they will probably all be SEED related lol but I think everyone should take a shot at one at some point in their life, It’s such a great hobby.

Just ordered my first kit, and have been really nervous about putting it together when it shows up. All I have is a basic hobby kit and Ive never done anything like this before. And I keep seeing videos about panel lining, top coating, etc and all the stuff you need to do those things, and felt like I was getting in over my head. Your video helped calm me down and remind me thats its all for fun and its okay to screw up. So thanks :)

This is great! I've been building for almost 6 months now and I'm currently on my 9th kit. I started by getting an HG Star Burning Gundam from Barnes & Noble because I had lost a bunch of anime figurines during several moves and was looking to start a collection again. Like you, I was surprised that the "toy" I purchased was actually a model. I had some wire cutters and used those because I didn't have anything else :) Nine builds in and I've made about every mistake you've mentiond LOL. What started on a whim is now an addiction - Best hobby ever!

bro you're hilarious, love your camera shots too!
For me, I started building gunpla because it was something I did when I was little (albeit not too much) and watching Gundam Build Fighters sparked that sort of nostalgia. That and seeing so many interesting takes on mobile suits that I'd known really made me wonder, "what can I do with that?". And I totally agree on the progress thing. It's not a pressing matter, you can take as much or as little of your time and you can see physical progress. I'm just a beginner with only a handful under my belt, but learning more and more about how to fine tune the art of making it the way you want is exhilarating.
    subbed!

Thank you for this video. I used to chip at my backlog just to take pictures of a mobile suit, post it on reddit and hopefully start a conversation with someone. I wasn't really building for me but rather for others to just see my work. As of late I've just been doing my thing and building the way I like, taking my time, enjoying the process and your video definitely helps cement that into my head. No matter the mistakes made, at the end of it....it's my build. Again, Thank you.

I started building at the start of December to give my self something to do other than sit at home doing fuck all on the internet and playing games. I was instantly hooked.
Now at the end of February I've finished nine kits, six HG's and three RG's and I have four MG's waiting for me in my private warehouse on Hobby Link Japan so I can get right back to building after I move flats in a few weeks.
This hobby has helped me get through some really rough patches in the last few months and I look forward to filling entire bookcases with theses things. The only thing I don't like about it is how hard and expensive it is to get kits in the UK, kits are massively marked-up and there are no physical stores to buy them from. I've only found one store in the entirety of London that sells the damned things.

Growing up I always enjoyed Legos and I loved Gundam growing up but I remember being intimidated by the kits. Now that I’m 22 I have a handful of kits and kits being shipped and I love building them, it’s a new therapy and I stop whatever I’m doing and build. I’ll put on some old episodes on TH-cam to watch while building or of the kit I’m building, just adds excitement. Sorta like watching your favorite TV show or movie with the toy of your favorite character like in all the old TV toy commercials or like in Toy Story. I haven’t gotten past HG kits yet because I haven’t decided which MG I want to tackle. I’ve subbed because of this video.

I think this is the best and most encouraging video on gunpla :-) I started building my first kits this year and so far managed only to build 3 hg kits because I struggled with starting as well. I'm a designer by profession and therefore struggle a lot with perfectionism as a kind of profession based illness ;-). But accepting upfront that it is the process of building that counts more than the outcome helped me to start. I started with the mindset of practising and finding out whether I like it or not. I'll probably never jump on the airbrush waggon, that is too much effort if you don't have that much time but just the joy of building and maybe a bit of shading and panellinig does the trick for me. And honestly I don't even care what others think about my models or skills or lack of skills. It's brain off, joy on. Keep or start building everyone :-)

I'm an artist, so I feel about gunpla the same way I feel about my drawings. There's a satisfaction to seeing your work come together in a complete whole, whether it's a huge drawing you spent upwards of 3 weeks on, or a MG Sazabi ver ka that looks amazing when you're all done. You can post the drawing online and put the Sazabi on your desk and every time you look at it, you think "I did that. This thing is the result of my hard work and effort, and I'm proud." That's what I enjoy so much about Gunpla. Great video (though I view the offering of "tips" from other more experienced builders a lot more positively than you seem to.)

    • @BadGunpla1
      @BadGunpla1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Oh no doubt, tips are important. Half of my videos offer tips in some fashion, for that matter. It’s all about delivery - “have you tried x? It does this thing and it’s really cool” tips are way more effective compared to “Why didn’t you do x? You should have done x instead reeee” tips. Maybe a video on constructive criticism might be worthwhile? 🤔
Glad you enjoyed the message of the video! Maybe pop into the Discord sometime and share you art? We’d love to see it!

I think I'm starting to become like you in some ways. I've been working in a warehouse that ships out all kinds of drains for 3 years now, and been doing the same thing since then (go to work for 8 hours, come back home, get on the internet or gaming, eat, wash, and sleep), and during that time I got an upgrade for my bedroom, a nice TV stand, and an adjustable standing desk. It's gotten to a point where I just wanna accomplish something, and figured I go back to making models again, this time doing Gundam. But I've seen all kinds of tutorials on how to build gunpla, or how to add weathering or painting all together, with all kinds of things that you need to get, and it's just overwhelming. But this video you shared shown a new light to me, and I feel confident that I can now start doing it without worry of it being perfect. I'm planning on getting an astray red frame this week (cause I'm kinda a sucker for giant mechs with katanas) and see how I do.
Also my apologies for being a bit disorganized with my thoughts, but I just had to share it with you.

Quarantine got me into the hobby, and I started off by building both a really good kit, the HG Sword Impulse, and a (by consensus, cause I think its fine) really bad kit, being the Banshee Ver.Ka, and I've loved every minute since. I think that idea that every build is uniquely yours is really important because when you look at a shelf full of stuff you've built, it feels much more satisfying knowing that you've made every single thing there, as compared to normal figures that too me always seemed a bit "hollow"

I went and picked up my first gunpla because of this video, the HG model of char's Zaku II. It was only $20, and it was crazy satisfying to see come together (even getting those tiny stickers on with a stolen pair of my girlfriend's tweezers was satisfying). I figure I'm going to practice panel lining on my next kit, so i've ordered an HG gundam vidar and two liner pens, one grey and one black. If i'm satisfied with the result i'm going straight for the rg Tallgeese and rg Sazabi next! Thank you so much for this video!

I built gunpla before Master Grades were produced. In the last few years I took the hobby seriously and only built Master Grade Gundam models. When I would get off work I would use my spare time to build/paint/prepping rather than playing video games. Gunpla is said to be good for the brain! Now I share my work on Instagram (same name as this youtube ID). I love that gunpla has no expectations, no borders, and no "correct" way of modelling (unless you kitbash of course it will be different).

But I never let that stop me and anyone reading this should not let that stop you either!!! Like what was said this is "your model kit" and what you do with it is up to you. I started with a Wing Zero model whose grade I can't remember. I basically started by building hand grenades, and if my ongoing Frame Arms Hresvelgr Ater kitbash is any indicator, I started as I meant to go on. It's a challenge for me, a way to own the engineering and tinkering I'm so proud of and that I make a living on. When I think I've lost control of it, having something to build and prove to myself that no, I'm still the one who can solve problems, is really important.
