I'll give you this: You had that gun zeroed perfectly. For a stranger to take a cold bore shot and only miss the target by a smidge. The elevation was perfect.

I really appreciate when people with world class skills show that they can miss... but they learn from it. I follow that same mindset and it is so much more beneficial than whipping up excuses. Great video!

I love this challenge. I'm lucky to have a couple ranges that have targets out to 500, 1000 and 1773 yards. I do MOA shoots 200 to500 a few times a year. Plus I'm a marine that qualified with Iron sights out to 500 (that's for you Erik, LOL). This is very realistic and hopefully will help hunters know it's better to close the distance than wound an animal.

Eric, I really enjoy watching these videos. I have enjoyed shooting at long range for many years now, so I often think I could do as well as most of the guys on your videos. That's easy to say while I am sitting at my computer desk, but I am aware of reality. Shooting far with real accuracy isn't easy even with the finest equipment.
I'll be really honest... I can't say that I shoot moa groups consistently because I don't. Some days are good, and some are mediocre. That's how shooting is, but I am still proud of my ability as a shooter. I am 73 years old, and I have two Weatherby rifles that I "plink" with at targets as far as 1,200 yards in the local mountains. Both are just off-the-shelf rifles with 6.5x20 Leupold long range target scopes. We are not allowed to set up targets there, so we pick out a small target like a rock or a stick on a distant hillside, something small enough that it is hard to see in our scopes, and we shoot at it. Distances and angles change all the time, so it is always a challenge. Seriously, at my age, and with my equipment, minute of angle accuracy at long range is uncommon, but it happens far more often than one might expect. Generally speaking, I have minute-of-rock accuracy, and I'm darned proud of it.
My hunting rifles are not competition rifles. They aren't built for that, but they are very accurate, probably as accurate as many high-dollar custom rifles. Up in the local mountains I am in my element. I know that I am capable of shooting the distance and because I am shooting minute of rock accuracy, I am under no serious pressure. I am able to relax and let the bullets fly. Remember, people were shooting accurately long ago with guns we'd refer to as primitive today. You don't have to spend a fortune to be accurate at long range. You have to spend a fortune to compete at long range. There is a difference.

Excellent video and shooting emphasizing ethical shots on steel deer. I practice off a Bog Infinite tripod for Illinois deer @300yds on SMT target with CVA Cascade XT 450bm and BearCreekBallistics 240HV ammo on windy days. Last year harvested deer with heart shot @200yds frontal facing doe. Practice paper deer target hung on e tgt carrier and SMT has tgz deer image file so can see shot placement on tablet on firing line @ 300yds. Need to know your limit Passed on 180 class deer at 300yds because of 15mph gusting wind conditions.

I had a lot of fun taking this shot, don't remember too many shot where a single pull of the trigger was so much fun. And yes, the match jitters were real folks...for all three of us, lol.
Edit to add: I am looking for a place to try a shot as close to 880 yards as possible with a pistol...I want to try it and I will do it with irons if I can find a range that'll let me try.

I think this is my favorite 500 yard challenge. BTW - Check out the Wimberley gimbal head (google that exact combination of words) for the tripod. It's got an ARCA clamp (ARCA was invented for cameras). It allows you to set the vertical axis pivot on the centerline of the barrel. The barrel motion isn't an arc when you do that. I normally use mine for a 600 f4 camera lens but it's seen an AR and a bolt gun. It's pricey but what isn't these days.

  • @rustbucket9318
    @rustbucket9318 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Some very good tips in this video about how different shooters manipulate the weapon for their style and comfort. I am personally with halfmilesniper as I load the tripod a bit because it helps me keep the heartbeat motion down. I also like a few pounds on my trigger, I've never attempted any bench rest shooting and those ultra light triggers would throw me off I think.

You should be able to adjust the tripod's arca clamp tighter or looser to fit any arca or pic rail... push in on the lever lock and rotate the nut on the opposite side tighter or looser to fit any particular rail. May have to adjust that to accommodate any particular rail depending on if it's in or out of spec.

I did, bottomed out the adjustment and it still would not work. I’ll replace the clamp on the rifle.

I got my gen 2 tuner brake in day before yesterday and took my Ruger gen 2 .308 to the range. I was shooting AAC 150gr psp and rifle was shooting .75” groups at 100, adjusted the tuner a few times and now it’s consistently shooting .38” groups, I’m hooked on the tuner now and need more😂

Thanks for demonstrating again, why shooting at living creatures at a distance is inherently unethical. A target not an animal. Tuned target rifle, tripod, exact known distance, professional shooter, no wind, all the time in the world. Probable kill. Gut shot. Possible kill with a major difference in a heart / lung shot becoming a neck shot.

It’s not inherently unethical I dont feel. It’s all in what your used to. My typical whitetail shot is 280-360 yards and I’ve killed farther. I’ve shot several at that distance. I honestly last year had a bad shot but truthfully wasn’t my shooting skill. Had a rifle in a rest and I thought I was loosening the vise grip but was loosening the rail instead just as I squeezed the trigger the rifle pushed forward and I shot left and into liver. Not a big deal with a 28 Nosler but a miss in my mind. But yes adding another 150 yards or so to that is a whole other level and i will say i wouldn’t take a 500yd shot at any opportunity mostly because misses are not acceptable with me and wounds are even more unacceptable. But if it feels right I’m taking it without hesitation.

Its absolutely not unethical. Simply trying to prove a point that allot of hunters go further than they would normally to get the "monster" . It's absolutely not unethical. The lungs of a deer cover almost the entire front half of its body alone "short definition" buck feaver is real. But there are allot of people out there that can absolutely take the shit ethically with an actual hunting rifle. He really should atleast double if not tripple the size of the target if he wanted to completely prove the point to deer.

I’d absolutely love to try this challenge with my airgun. Assuming the weather was semi calm. Speaking of, you should try the shooter 1721 (Rick rehm) 500 yard challenge with your raw! It’s a lot of fun!

I usually get to say hi to @halfmilesniper in the livestreams and podcasts from Who_Tee-Who.
This was cool and yes, I would not take a 500 yard shot with a gun I don't know.
That being said, even with the rifles I do have, I am not shooting a deer past 300 yards, which is my comfort zone. Even with my 7 PRC, which has enough impact velocity to do the job at longer distances.
