Three Dog Night is an amazing band with hits like Joy To The World, Mama Told Me Not to Come and many others Great Reaction and yes its an awesome song about being lonely!
Written by Harry Nilsson. You should check him out. Harry was an splendid songwriter/ singer. The Beatles stated he was one of their favorites. They individually worked with and regularly socialized with them.
Yes!!! Harry was brilliant. Lennon produced his album Pussy Cats during Lennon’s lost weekend period in LA. Got him into primal scream therapy, which unfortunately ruined Harry’s vocal chords for a time. Anyway Harry is one of my all time favorite songwriters.
He did a clever cover of the Beatles' "You Can't Do That" weaving in lyrics from many Beatles songs and ending it with the line "Strawberry Beatles Forever".
As a man who loves lyrics, when Brad started it drove him nuts when he couldn't figure out what a song was about. Now he can enjoy the wondering. That's a significant development in his ability to appreciate music. It's like he's adding new 'ways' to appreciate it so he can choose whatever 'way' suits the song.
Yep, He was absolutly loving the ambiguity of this one. He was owning the whole experince of appreciating it, in a way so at odds to how he use to be for anything pre-2000 that it is staggering.
Written by the great Harry Nilssen (who has a fabulous track record as a vocalist as well). That staccato piano riff came to him while listening to a busy signal on his phone.
That rhythmic single guitar note (or octave) just makes the song. Two can be as bad as one if you're in the wrong relationship. The meaning of this song couldn't really be any simpler.
I dedicated several sets of tires to this band over the years, considering how many miles I cruised just listening to Three Dog Night. They had such a cool groove back in the early 70s, which were my formative years, musically.
This song is about being single. "One is the loneliest number," because you're all alone, all by yourself. "Two can be as bad as one," because it's great while the relationship lasts, but no one ever knows the future, so we can't say for sure if we'll be with that person for the rest of our lives. Also, it's quite possible that the relationship can sour in subtle ways long before it ends, so that despite you being a duo, in reality, you're little more than two people living together. "No, is the saddest experience you'll ever know," needs very little explanation. Everyone has asked someone out at one time or another and gotten rejected. "Yes, it's the saddest experience you'll ever know," just reiterates that point, "because one is the loneliest number that you'll ever do,". In this context, "do" is essentially substituted for "be" or "have" as it is talking about being alone.
The "Yes" line was just confirming the previous "No" line. No is the saddest experience you'll ever know Yes, it's the saddest experience you'll ever know
This song was written and originally recorded by Harry Nilsson, a great song writer with possibly the best voice in modern history. His version is excellent, and I believe it is about being lonely with very little innuendo.
I suggest you don't over think this one. "It's just no good anymore since you went away"....they had been a couple (2) but now he was alone (1) and 1 is the loneliest number (way to live) that you'll ever do (live). And because bad relationships (2) can be bad hence the phrase "two can be as lonely as one". In that bad relationship you may ask don't you love me? and the answer "No" is the sadist experience you ever know. Yes, it's (the answer NO) is the saddest experience you'll ever know.
"Black & White" is my favorite from this outstanding group. "Old-fashioned Love Song" is another among my favorites list. The live version really gives a good look at each singer, too.
He doesn't say " 'No' IS the saddest experience" then " 'Yes' IS the saddest experience". What he actually says is " 'No' IS the saddest experience." Meaning being turned down and being alone. Then he re-states the same thing, "Yes, IT'S (meaning the 'no') the saddest experience".
Heard this as a kid when it came out and I always understood that he was confirming that no was the saddest by saying yes, No is the saddest experience
Three Dog Night was the greatest cover band in American history. This song, by Harry Nilsson, was done well by them, but the original by Harry just squeezes this out. Listen to Harry doing, "Without You", "I Guess The Lord Must Be In NY City", Harry's cover of "Everybody's Talking", "Without Her", and of course his popular "Coconut". My favorite Three Dog Night song is their cover of "Shambala", although B.W Stevenson's cover (who also wrote the song "My Maria) is the best cover. TDN cover of the song "Easy To Be Hard" from the musical "Hair" is also very good.
This is probably one of the first reaction videos were I’ve seen you hit the nail right on the head with understanding this song. Keep up the good work
I think this is the first time I've ever heard Brad express enthusiasm over a song. I'm glad it was this one, because this is one of my favorite songs, sung by one of my favorite vocalists, in one of my all time favorite groups! Don't know if you've already covered their Momma Told Me Not to Come, but their live video is really good as well as the studio version.
@@davester1432 .. True .. But love this Cover and arrangement .. Showcasing all three lead singer voices .. Just like Laura Nyro’s Stoney end .. Sounds 100 times better when covered by Linda Ronstadt than Barbara Streisand.. It boils down to opinions and ears .. We all like what we like ..
Hey! Brad and Lex! 3 Dog Night was one of the most perfect bands that ever graced the stage! They were my personal favorite! Their stage performance was sooo awesome, and the beautiful blend of each of their perfect voices was amazing. Not to mention they were a bunch of hotties! My favorite songs(really too many to mention) were Cory’s Try a Little Tenderness, Pieces of April, Cowboy, and Eli’s Comin! Must watch!!!
Brad - you're starting to bring your A-game to breaking down the lyrics. Very impressive. Lex - your innate connection to the rhythms and sounds of the song is the perfect complement to Brad's style of reaction. Together you guys are great. Thanks for posting this one.
Its a good song , I loved Shambala that was the first 45 I ever bought as a kid , me and my best friend walked to town and I got the record she got a box of mini reeses cups and we come back and played it on her small record player. I played it so much and remember at fairs them playing it too. Had some great songs and meanings to them , even as kid , got thier meanings
Basically, it's real simple...As many GREAT songs are. Two...Being in a relationship, can be just as bad...Lonely....As One...Being single and alone...It was a little bit bad while they were together, but he misses her just the same.
When he sings “One is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do“, he’s not talking about sexual activity. He’s singing about living your life alone. To live your life alone is the loneliest thing you can ever do.
This song came out when I was a child. It spoke to me even before I had experienced my first relationship with a girl. Whenever I had my heart broken I could listen to this song and it was like a warm hug that said I understand what you’re going through. One of those instant classics that sticks with you throughout your life.
Harry Nilsson was a great songwriter - and one of the greatest voices of the last century - who was almost cursed to be mostly remembered for his covers of other people's songs while other people had big hits with songs he wrote. Look into his stuff, especially his early albums and you will be rewarded.
I sat on a fold-out chair in the fourth row of the Hyatt regency ballroom in 1986 with about 50 other people and saw Three Dog Night do a show. Amazing artists and music with great friends!

I was born April 1954. I grew up with the Greatest Music In History. The 60s set the table for the 70s and the early 80s and we all thrived on the best bands ever making incredible music, before it all started to go Digital with forms of noise I refuse to call music. In the past when I heard a song on the radio I couldn’t wait to hear it again ASAP….. Today when I listen to the top 40 stations I usually think… I never want to hear that crap ever again. So funny watching you two, coming from a senior who went to their concerts back in the day when their songs were new. With ticket prices between six and eight dollars.

Brad & Lex, you'll love their "Shambala" and "Black & White" !!!! Three lead singers in this 70s hit machine!
Three Dog Night is not a rabbit hole, it's a full on cave system. They have a ton of hits in the 60s and 70s. One of my all time favorite groups
Written by Harry Nilsson after trying to make a call and kept getting the "Plink plink plink" of a busy signal and he said he felt he was all alone.
Three Dog Night is an amazing band with hits like Joy To The World, Mama Told Me Not to Come and many others Great Reaction and yes its an awesome song about being lonely!

Harry was an splendid songwriter/ singer.

Love Harry! So underrated and kinda forgotten…still one of the best singers of all times!
Harry was amazing
Yes!!! Harry was brilliant. Lennon produced his album Pussy Cats during Lennon’s lost weekend period in LA. Got him into primal scream therapy, which unfortunately ruined Harry’s vocal chords for a time. Anyway Harry is one of my all time favorite songwriters.

Thanks for the info. I think that Lennon said he was one of the greatest singers and songwriters he had ever heard.
I agree 100%, perfect song! Other hits are "Eli's Coming", "Easy to Be Hard", and "Celebrate".
I second all of those. Great choices.
SHAMBHALA
Black and White, Shambala.

Easy to Be Hard would be a great song for an ED commercial.

To quote a friend of mine... "I'd rather be alone, than with someone and wishing I was alone"
Totally agree.
It’s funny how their reactions or takes on lyrics are often way off target; they’re overthinking it.
@@TLAS Yes, early on they were always assuming certain words were metaphors for drugs
It's amazing that the guy who wrote this song (Harry Nilsson) is the same guy who sang "Put the lime in de coconut and drink em both down!"
And many more awesome songs
