When Caleb did the Gamecube Gambit he reignited my love for the Gamecube, as it was my first console as a kid. and during that series i had gotten my childhood console back from my moms and started collecting all the games i used to have and play all the time. but shortly after he finished the series and sold a bit of his collection, i had to, realized those things have high value and cost some good money especially at the time, and i had to sadly do the same to get some things done for my family, it hurt a tiny bit to let some of my prize possessions or some of my most cherished games go but it was somthing that had to be done and he taught me that. i appreciate everything that guy has done and sure enough, it really helped my family when we were in a pinch, so maybe in the future when the Gamecube market isn’t so high, i’ll get those games back. but you know, Thank you bro and i never stopped watching since. and also Phoenix resale put me onto PGS and all you guys Gabbo, Mort, and everybody in LA or Arkansas or wherever Retro Rick lives, but you guys are seriously so dope and genuine i hope to run into you guys one day. First of all I love your guys channel but you can’t use some examples of generosity for his inner circle and “TH-cam” friends as a means to dismiss all the wrong he has done. By wrong, I’ve seen examples of him lying and lowballing grandmothers who are selling their grandchildren’s things just to get a slightly lower price on an already good score. It’s not ethical. That’s the morality people question. If I lied and took advantage of an elderly woman, but donated some games to my friends. Does that make it any better of what I was doing? No As an early fan of his during his beginning, that’s what put me off of the channel. I wouldn’t tolerate that if my friends did it, I won’t with a stranger. It is what it is. Just criticism for someone within the hobby of collecting.
First of all, let me start by love your channel, and it is one of the reasons why my wife goes to game chasing with and without me to build an awesome game collection. But I live in the same state, and his buy list and reseller network has almost totally ruined the local supply in Louisville . I no longer drive to Lexington as it is in his backyard . Is some of this just jealousy maybe but like he said people in elevators talk, he's a good person but bad for the gaming community as a whole.

The reason why people hate on Phoenix resale isn't because he is a reseller there are tons of other youtubers who do resell content that people don't hate on. People hate on him because he portrays himself as a collector that cares but then in his actions it shows that's not true. Even if that's not how it is in reality that's how it's perceived in videos.

I understand eventually selling the collection, when its settled, he's tried out the games, realized 'nah this one isn't for me' etc. Selling at the end of a hunt, isn't collecting. That isn't a collection as we understand it. That's inventory. Yeah it wasn't all of it, yeah I get most of the picks he sold (though he sold some bangers) but he should have let it sit to at least show 'I tried them and don't like them'. Also you can't blame us for thinking you sold them off when you title the video 'I'm selling my gamecube collection' many people see that, get P-O'ed and nope out of the video before fully counting. It was a sensationalist headline, which yeah I get it youtube, but also it was your secondary channel which I think is more niche anyway. I think everyone sells a collection eventually so its not surprising but to do it at the end was the issue. I get why people might say 'hey you did this thing, prices may have shot up - I'll take your word for it did at the time - and sold, when you said 'I'm collecting'. We were on a journey to share your nostalgia, and the end of it came off like it wasn't really about that. When you say 'your collecting the gamecube collection of your childhood dreams' well we don't assume child you intended to sell his games without playing them immediately after getting them. I don't even care if Caleb's channel is all about making money and he couldn't give two rips about games. Make the cash, capitalism is good. It was just my first series from him, and my understanding of the channel shifted when it ended. I was like 'oh this is JUST money making. Lame'. Like all the collecting channels flip and have side hustles, you basically have to unless you want to go broke doing this. But I unsubbed because I like channels that are doing this because they like the games, and I felt like you didn't really, and that might not be true but its how that video framed it to me. I think if you also kept up with the trying every game at the end of the video, it would have made your reasoning for selling the games go down better ("I tried it, realistically I'm probably not going to have time for it again, going to sell it to someone who will play it" would have gone down smoother, than us feeling like you did the series to sell them). Like I enjoyed Retro Ricks series of building collections for little money, but he was up front that it was a demonstration on how to flip your way to a collection, and its being sold / given away at the end. Basically the same thing, but framed differently. I say this with respect and constructive criticism. I don't want to add to the hate. Hating over that is dumb, but if you wanted a thought out response on why that video got a thumbs down and unsub from someone like me, there you go.

Eh, some are but for me it was that he started his videos with the claim he was hunting for the “GameCube collection of his childhood dreams” when he was actually just building inventory. He didn’t want Pokemon box, he just wanted it in the thumbnail. The reselling part wasn’t, scummy, it was pretending he was accomplishing a childhood dream that was lame.
There’s no way actual mature adults are hating on Caleb, everything said in those comments sounds like a 12 year old crying because they’re jealous. How in the world would you think he was going to keep all those games, why keep expensive games that you’re never going to play? That’s just stupid! All it’s for is to make yourself feel better than others because you own some expensive game! It’s just dumb! Sell it and buy things you want or need, like food for your family! It’s TH-cam, everyone does things for views, be happy he’s being honest about what he’s doing!
I've been watching Caleb since basically day 1 and he's always come across as a gentleman and professional in his videos. Jealousy doesn't look good on anyone (for the haters out there).
To Chris regarding that 1 star review: I see your point of "i tried to make it right" and in your perspective you did, but look at it from his perspective: in the end the guy wanted to play guitar hero, and he spent probably a good stack of cash on the guitar (which was supposed to work) you gave him stuff which he didnt need/want of roughly equal monetary value. He left there without a working guitar, and the added burden of having to resell and ship stuff (and thus paying sellers fees) to recoup his losses.
Yeah I understand the "no refunds" policy, but if you sold something that was broken, just refund the guy. It's a different situation then returning something because you changed your mind
I think people dislike him because his tone of voice seems very condescending and even if it’s not true which I think he is just a nice guy , he can come across as just in it for the money not as a collector. The kind of guy that has a lot of money making videos showing off what he can buy and how much he can make from selling it for more. Other channels it’s fun to watch get excited to find games they want this guy seems to just be a show off even if he isn’t

I did something that I felt was wrong towards caleb. It ate me up and had to talk to him privately about it.. This is WILD that people would do that. Calebs a good dude. I was shocked about that video too! Good video and Calebs always up front. Glad hes receptive
6:33 - Caleb answers GameCube gambit controversy. Actually a solid & mature response. I was collecting Board Games during the pandemic and ended up with cool stuff but not all of them ended up being played. I think It is important to sell or give away the games you're not playing and have no nostalgia or value for. We can't take all our stuff to heaven. Might as well pass on stuff that's not in use anymore. Completely reframed my view of the situation. However I do think Caleb should have kept his collection for a year before curating it because there was an emotional response that fans of the series went through.

I have honestly gotten angry not because he resold stuff, it’s in his name, it was more the fact that he truly said when doing the GameCube collection that he stated that he felt his favorite console and he leaned on businesses to get it on games on the cheap which I felt it was fine for the collection but it feels worse when flipping so quickly. I’m happy to have met Caleb , I’m truly fine with him , it’s just how those expectations were there when he was doing those videos . I quickly get over this stuff and I’m not angry anymore but at that time, it was frustrating for me personally viewing it. I was happy to meet Riff and Caleb at Sege last year. Insecure people love to hate and judge others. I also noticed that people tend to blame others for their own shortcomings. They unload on you but really they are talking about themselves to make themselves feel better. I don’t game, collect games or resell games but I enjoy all your channels, I used to collect vintage bicycles. Own over 10 thousand of them through 2000-2010. Now I don’t own a single one. Then I started collecting vintage license plates and at one time I had over 17 thousand. Now my collection is curated down to about 1000 which is the heart of my collection. I do not know a hobby where people do not buy and sell to fund the hobby. Caleb might be buying and selling something else if it took off on him like games did. I was watching him before he went full bore on games. More power to him if he can enjoy his job and being self employed. He could be working for a shitty corporation and collecting a minuscule paycheck and hate life like a lot of the negative people do

I think the thing that really pissef people off with phoenix resale was that he wasn’t transparent about the GameCube collection. After he sold off some of his collection people thought that he wasn’t genuine and what connected him to the regular audience was gone.
Literally the only negative comment I’ve had for Caleb was in his PlayStation Project series where he seemed to be “overacting” and not really being himself. Aside from that, the man has been genuine and a pioneer in the space and has brought a lot of joy to people. His content got me more into gaming than ever before. I hope the negativity doesn’t push you away from the genre, Caleb. I’d love to see more content when you’re able; both business and gaming related alike 👍
To Kris’s point about negative reviews, if there’s a ton I can see that hurting the business but when I look to shop, I go directly there to look for validity. Some of these reviews appear so one off that I could disregard; IE - wasn’t greeted in time, argued about returns, etc. A store experience is so subjective and when they write subjectively, I can personally bump the scores up in my mind
i bet these store owners hate caleb because he asks for discounts off games. margins in business are vital and these store owners have wiggle room when it comes to price but when resellers come in to buy a bunch of quality products and ask for a discount, they are essentially taking money from the store to increase their margins. i have seen a bunch of caleb's videos where he will ask for discounts even though he has a good margin at sticker price

Just watched the "hate" video spoken about in this interview. Hot damn it was.painful to watch, hating on videos for the thumbnail....... It feels like my comment section half the time. How people still don't understand that a thumbnail is to grab your attention and if you don't watch the video you won't get the context is beyond me. That video in particular though was a tough watch as it honestly just screams "I can do this better than him so why is he so successful" Kinda sucks for calleb though because he isn't the most natural guy in front of the camera (well be at least wasn't when he started out) and over time he went through the TH-cam grind and made a connection with people in one way or another and people now like him. If those guys were at the so Cal expo that would have been pretty 💀

Resellling is not my issue. But its more like when I see a TAS speedrun vs a real person speed running. Hope that clarifies it. More raw than scripted.
Having met Phoenix resale. I get it. He’s not a very approachable person. When me and my buddy met him, he was not happy to be around fans. The three times we approached him it was the same. I even came to him to get an autograph and he still was very unwelcoming… I’m sure he’s a nice guy to some people. But when fans create your living, I would expect that fans would get a little bit more appreciation.
Honestly I love Phoenix Resale. There’s some content that could almost he documentary level content; IE - there was a video where he traveled with a reseller on their day to day and the interview was fantastic; how he grew, how he hit hard times, how much he works, why he does what he does, how he thinks things through. To me, and this is my opinion, he could make a very Game Historian like, Money Positive docu-series. It’s an interesting topic for those who look at his business objectively

The car mechanic doesn't have to like his job, it's a job. This is a hobby first, most ppl enjoy their hobbies and want to expand their knowledge of everything in the hobby. It's so off-putting to dismiss everyone as "you're not better than me because you have actual passion and knowledge about the games we buy." That's not the argument, who is better. It's about so many ppl have lost out on having a special gaming experience or finding that rare game they had as a kid beause ppl who know nothing about the games are using our tools for joy as a money making scheme. For over 35 years, this has been the way we relax after a hard day, escape the constant medical pain I'm in, it's my entertainment, I'm a lifelong gamer. Not saying PR is scheming or a bad guy, I just strongly disagree with the passion for games part. If you don't care, then sell anything else that has similar profit margins. The physical items are worth more than just monetary, they're video games with an experience on them.

Store owners Caleb dealt with before don't like him now because he has become competition. Some are just like that. I find it hard to believe no on one in the room knows the reason. Probably because they don't want to accuse them of being jealous. Let me explain it to Caleb so he understands. Let's say I make a better app than him and it becomes much more successful. And so does my business. He would not like me. Now you can be a little more self aware.

I hate cause you guess can’t admit you messed up the market, games being resold by independent people has spiked, with everyone selling games-prices go up. If you guys would admit you had some involvement in affecting the market and apologized to the collectors who couldn’t afford full price games, I’d be good! Caleb is a smart man, I admit that. Honestly, probably smarter than all of you. He has people send games to him, doesn’t have to hunt. They literally will smile and be cordial in-person, and then they will turn around and bash the store online because of the one thing that wasn't exactly what they wanted. The unfortunate reality of that situation is the mantra of "You cannot please everybody." It sucks, but eventually, you realize it and keep moving forward. That customer will never be satisfied no matter what you do.
People need to understand that without resellers putting product up on Amazon and ebay that these games would be so much more expensive. Resellers actually help keep price down. Simple concept of supply and demand

There’s no way actual mature adults are hating on Caleb, everything said in those comments sounds like a 12 year old crying because they’re jealous. How in the world would you think he was going to keep all those games, why keep expensive games that you’re never going to play? That’s just stupid! All it’s for is to make yourself feel better than others because you own some expensive game! It’s just dumb! Sell it and buy things you want or need, like food for your family! It’s TH-cam, everyone does things for views, be happy he’s being honest about what he’s doing!

I've been watching Caleb since basically day 1 and he's always come across as a gentleman and professional in his videos. Jealousy doesn't look good on anyone (for the haters out there).
To Chris regarding that 1 star review: I see your point of "i tried to make it right" and in your perspective you did, but look at it from his perspective: in the end the guy wanted to play guitar hero, and he spent probably a good stack of cash on the guitar (which was supposed to work) you gave him stuff which he didnt need/want of roughly equal monetary value. He left there without a working guitar, and the added burden of having to resell and ship stuff (and thus paying sellers fees) to recoup his losses.
Yeah I understand the "no refunds" policy, but if you sold something that was broken, just refund the guy. It's a different situation then returning something because you changed your mind

I think people dislike him because his tone of voice seems very condescending and even if it’s not true which I think he is just a nice guy , he can come across as just in it for the money not as a collector. The kind of guy that has a lot of money making videos showing off what he can buy and how much he can make from selling it for more. Other channels it’s fun to watch get excited to find games they want this guy seems to just be a show off even if he isn’t

I think It is important to sell or give away the games you're not playing and have no nostalgia or value for. We can't take all our stuff to heaven. Might as well pass on stuff that's not in use anymore.
Completely reframed my view of the situation. However I do think Caleb should have kept his collection for a year before curating it because there was an emotional response that fans of the series went through.

I have honestly gotten angry not because he resold stuff, it’s in his name, it was more the fact that he truly said when doing the GameCube collection that he stated that he felt his favorite console and he leaned on businesses to get it on games on the cheap which I felt it was fine for the collection but it feels worse when flipping so quickly. I’m happy to have met Caleb , I’m truly fine with him , it’s just how those expectations were there when he was doing those videos . I quickly get over this stuff and I’m not angry anymore but at that time, it was frustrating for me personally viewing it. I was happy to meet Riff and Caleb at Sege last year. Great video conversation guys.

Insecure people love to hate and judge others. I also noticed that people tend to blame others for their own shortcomings. They unload on you but really they are talking about themselves to make themselves feel better. I don’t game, collect games or resell games but I enjoy all your channels, I used to collect vintage bicycles. Own over 10 thousand of them through 2000-2010. Now I don’t own a single one. Then I started collecting vintage license plates and at one time I had over 17 thousand. Now my collection is curated down to about 1000 which is the heart of my collection. I do not know a hobby where people do not buy and sell to fund the hobby. Caleb might be buying and selling something else if it took off on him like games did. I was watching him before he went full bore on games. More power to him if he can enjoy his job and being self employed. He could be working for a shitty corporation and collecting a minuscule paycheck and hate life like a lot of the negative people do
Consumers are more likely to leave negative feedback than positive. We rarely call up a friend to tell them what a good day we had.

I think the thing that really pissef people off with phoenix resale was that he wasn’t transparent about the GameCube collection. After he sold off some of his collection people thought that he wasn’t genuine and what connected him to the regular audience was gone.

Literally the only negative comment I’ve had for Caleb was in his PlayStation Project series where he seemed to be “overacting” and not really being himself. Aside from that, the man has been genuine and a pioneer in the space and has brought a lot of joy to people. His content got me more into gaming than ever before.
I hope the negativity doesn’t push you away from the genre, Caleb. I’d love to see more content when you’re able; both business and gaming related alike 👍
To Kris’s point about negative reviews, if there’s a ton I can see that hurting the business but when I look to shop, I go directly there to look for validity. Some of these reviews appear so one off that I could disregard; IE - wasn’t greeted in time, argued about returns, etc. A store experience is so subjective and when they write subjectively, I can personally bump the scores up in my mind
People always hate people that have something they dont, just do you ignore the hate and make your money!
i bet these store owners hate caleb because he asks for discounts off games. margins in business are vital and these store owners have wiggle room when it comes to price but when resellers come in to buy a bunch of quality products and ask for a discount, they are essentially taking money from the store to increase their margins. i have seen a bunch of caleb's videos where he will ask for discounts even though he has a good margin at sticker price
The store owner can always say no to giving a discount.

How people still don't understand that a thumbnail is to grab your attention and if you don't watch the video you won't get the context is beyond me.
That video in particular though was a tough watch as it honestly just screams "I can do this better than him so why is he so successful"
Kinda sucks for calleb though because he isn't the most natural guy in front of the camera (well be at least wasn't when he started out) and over time he went through the TH-cam grind and made a connection with people in one way or another and people now like him.

Resellling is not my issue. But its more like when I see a TAS speedrun vs a real person speed running. Hope that clarifies it. More raw than scripted.

Having met Phoenix resale. I get it. He’s not a very approachable person. When me and my buddy met him, he was not happy to be around fans. The three times we approached him it was the same. I even came to him to get an autograph and he still was very unwelcoming… I’m sure he’s a nice guy to some people. But when fans create your living, I would expect that fans would get a little bit more appreciation.

Honestly I love Phoenix Resale. There’s some content that could almost he documentary level content; IE - there was a video where he traveled with a reseller on their day to day and the interview was fantastic; how he grew, how he hit hard times, how much he works, why he does what he does, how he thinks things through. To me, and this is my opinion, he could make a very Game Historian like, Money Positive docu-series. It’s an interesting topic for those who look at his business objectively

Caleb kept 56 of 141 Gamecube games. He didn't sell 40%, he kept 40% and sold 60%.
Yeah, he tries to minimize what he did. The only reason people gave him such good deals was because they didn't think it would be resold.
Him reselling his GC stuff is a shallow maneuver and reflects how little he actually cares for the community.

The car mechanic doesn't have to like his job, it's a job. This is a hobby first, most ppl enjoy their hobbies and want to expand their knowledge of everything in the hobby.
It's so off-putting to dismiss everyone as "you're not better than me because you have actual passion and knowledge about the games we buy." That's not the argument, who is better. It's about so many ppl have lost out on having a special gaming experience or finding that rare game they had as a kid beause ppl who know nothing about the games are using our tools for joy as a money making scheme. For over 35 years, this has been the way we relax after a hard day, escape the constant medical pain I'm in, it's my entertainment, I'm a lifelong gamer.
Not saying PR is scheming or a bad guy, I just strongly disagree with the passion for games part. If you don't care, then sell anything else that has similar profit margins. The physical items are worth more than just monetary, they're video games with an experience on them.

Store owners Caleb dealt with before don't like him now because he has become competition. Some are just like that. I find it hard to believe no on one in the room knows the reason. Probably because they don't want to accuse them of being jealous.
Let me explain it to Caleb so he understands. Let's say I make a better app than him and it becomes much more successful. And so does my business. He would not like me. Now you can be a little more self aware.

I hate cause you guess can’t admit you messed up the market, games being resold by independent people has spiked, with everyone selling games-prices go up. If you guys would admit you had some involvement in affecting the market and apologized to the collectors who couldn’t afford full price games, I’d be good! Caleb is a smart man, I admit that. Honestly, probably smarter than all of you. He has people send games to him, doesn’t have to hunt.
You guys have consistent sources, and now Riff with owning a convention center and hosting shows/etc you guys pretty much have a close monopoly on retro video games.

18:47 I completely understand why this would bother a store owner to see a two-faced customer like this. They literally will smile and be cordial in-person, and then they will turn around and bash the store online because of the one thing that wasn't exactly what they wanted. The unfortunate reality of that situation is the mantra of "You cannot please everybody." It sucks, but eventually, you realize it and keep moving forward. That customer will never be satisfied no matter what you do.
People need to understand that without resellers putting product up on Amazon and ebay that these games would be so much more expensive. Resellers actually help keep price down. Simple concept of supply and demand
