California and Arizona Railfanning

  • Watch in HD! As I've come back to Michigan for college, my father has again taken over responsibility for rail fanning in Southern California, and recently word came to him that an incredible 8 pack (yes, you heard me right, EIGHT) of Tier 4 Credit Units (Tier 3 ES44c4's produced for every new Tier 4 ET44c4 produced this year) was making its way across the Transcon. Without hesitation, he set off for the Seligman subdivision in hopes of catching the train, and managed to catch it at Kingman, Topock, Klinefelter, Essex, and Lavic!! Also featured in this video are other Tier 4 credit units, foreign power, and even a CSX train that I managed to catch while running errands here in Grand Rapids!

    Zacc, the shots of the 8 unit consist of fresh T4s were absolutely gorgeous! Just absolutely stunning to see.
    The newly painted orange and silver looks amazing together!
    BNSF orange is a fan favorite to me as a whole honestly.
    It’s also the fact you caught 2 8 unit consist trains in this video, not to leave out the CSX YN2 at the end.

    Great video! I love the long telephoto shots! The train with eight units pulling it doesn't seem all that long, though. Any idea why BNSF employed eight units? Please excuse my ignorance, but was this a power movement, or do these units require a break-in period, where they aren't used to pull a full load? Another thing: Please consider doing one of your telephoto shots at sunset, looking West off the I-40 bridge at Yucca, Arizona. Every time I pass over that bridge, I think how cool such a shot would look.

      When you see that many (6 to 12 units) on the head end, it always means some engines are being repositioned to other terminals. You can look at it as excess engines being a part of the train.

    How about a bunch of engines painted in retro ATSF colors? And singing that song in the commercial? Now that would impress me. Or seeing UP having a nice haul of new SP engines in retro colors.

    Does anyone know how many of the 8 units would still be needed if they took off all of the smog control dampeners off of all the diesel engines? How much more horsepower would a single unit have? Thanks.

    Ha; nothing says a BNSF train nowadays like an endless parade of J.B. Hunt, Swift, and Schneider 53-foot containers. (and for UP, Hub Group, UMAX, EMP, and Pacer Stacktrain.) Regardless, a great compilation with these brand-spanking new T4s.

      Kathy, on a good day you can see headlights at least 15 miles away in the desert. When we go out to the Needles subdivision and set up near Trojan, which is shown in this video, we can see trains all the way on the other side of Amboy near Cadiz. Certainly not going to see that on the East Coast!

      speaking of Needles, if anyone is railfanning in this area you must stay at this little motel in Needles right on old Route66. It has a perfect view of BNSF line from the second story. It is run by a freindly Indian family and is located a hundred yards west of I40 overpass on route66.

    How much is the coast of one BNSF ? Can i buy ?

    • @RailfanJunction
      @RailfanJunction  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Estimates 10 years ago were at least $2 million dollars per locomotive although I am sure that is much higher now with the cost of the Tier IV technology. If that number is still true, that was $16 million dollars worth of locomotives lashed together in one train. Oddly, nobody at BNSF was on hand to photograph or take video of it even though this would've been something of interest for publicity. When I talked to a BNSF film crew at Cajon Pass about 3 months later, they had no idea about that train and said they never know when new power is going to be sent out on trains. Seemed like a missed opportunity for some spectacular corporate shots but in the end it is all about running trains.
