Special Leaders on the UP

  • Over the past summer , Union Pacific trains have had several unique leading locomotives that have come in and out of the Los Angeles basin. This video is a compilation of these exceptional trains from spectacular settings all around the Southern California area. You will see rare leaders such as a KCSdeM SD70ACe, the Lackawanna heritage unit NS 1074, the CNW heritage unit UP 1995, a nowadays rare UP leader still carrying its SP paint, and rarest of all, a UP SD70ACe Tier IV.
    Ironically, the Tier IV ACes are the newest power on Union Pacific but due to their lack of reliability, they have been virtually non-existent in the SoCal area with the times that they have led in the past 9 months almost countable on one hand. Suffice it to say, a Tier IV ACe leader is a unique treat and RailfanJunction now has two videos showcasing this power!
    UP 3038, a Tier IV Ace leading train KG3LB, made for a remarkable chase from just south of Las Vegas, NV all the way through the High Desert of California with no other railfans in sight. Part of this exclusive chase shows it winding through Afton Canyon past the remains of a recent coal train derailment, with the scene shot with multiple cameras. The chase was especially exciting as we raced the train and clouds down to Daggett, only for there to be no green waiting for the train.
    After 3 hours of watching clouds build in and fully expecting the train to leave in shadows, a small hole in the cloud cover appeared. With a flashing yellow, the train quickly exited Union Pacific's LA&SL line and entered BNSF rails for a rare Tier IV ACe trip down Cajon Pass. Be sure to pay close attention to the plume of smoke coming from the train in the views from Bryman and Oro Grande- that smoke is spewing from what is supposed to be the latest in clean air technology to reduce locomotive pollution!

    Fabulous bit of what I'd call long-form/Zen railfanning here. Keeping up with UP 3038 must have been both a challenge and a blast. Kudos all around!

    11:34 The Erie Lackawanna ended up in conrail, which was split between NS and CSX. Care to explain why the U.P. has a heritage unit about it?

    I have a question, is the leader chosen when the train is put together or does that locomotive just happen to be the one that ended up in front ? Thanks for the awesome video.

      Thank you for taking the time to watch it! I am not an expert but my understanding is that each respective railroad has a power desk that calculates the requirement for each train in terms of horsepower and assigns whatever available power there is to a train to meet those needs. About 10 years ago, there was clearly someone at UP's power desk who had a bit of railfan inside of them because multiple times this person put 3 UP heritage units together to pull the KG1LA from Chicago down to Los Angeles. Of course that resulted in railfans chasing these trains all along the UP system and made for some spectacular shots. I seriously doubt that anyone gave it a second thought about whether to put UP 3038 on the point for the train in this video since it would only really be of interest for railfans but who really knows. It did make for a nice show. Certainly the other engines that led in this video just happened to be on the point by chance. For example, this was only the second time to my knowledge that the 1074 led into SoCal with there being multiple other times it trailed or was a DPU. Sometimes we get lucky as railfans, most of the time not.

    May I ask as to why there are different companies locomotives being used at the same time on the same train?

    10:30 UP borrow NS’s locomotives ?

    • @RailfanJunction
      @RailfanJunction  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes all of the time and vice versa. On any given day on the Yuma sub, you are bound to see trains with one or all of the locomotives being NS, CSX, KCS, CN or even BNSF. It could be power sharing such as the train that the Lackawanna heritage unit was on or actual detour trains. The train you mentioned was coming directly from Atlanta to Los Angeles and the NS power was just kept on at the interchange point rather than swapped out.

    Nice video! So, other than the smoking, are the problems with the SD70Ace T4's?

    • @RailfanJunction
      @RailfanJunction  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was the only one we have seen smoking like that. It got progressively worse as it went through the day. Other units have been pulled mid run due to oil and water leaks. Others get to LA and sit for sometimes over a week before going back out several times dead in consist. Apparently, most of the order was sent back to Muncie for bad bearings right after they were released but that is just a rumor. Unlike other brand new units that get put into heavy service immediately after being released, these still are very rare suggesting that they are not reliable but that is just an outsiders perspective.

    great stuff, great videography. I wasn't going to watch because of the length however I watch multiples of other rail fanning videos, so what's the difference?
    Are those adjoining lands accessible? Or are they all private? seems like a great place to take long walks and watch trains.
    Thanks for all your time and expense!
