  • You also have reporting deadlines. I mentioned one of the things funders want to see is are you a good bet to get the work done. Reporting deadlines, making those deadlines, those are one way you signal to your funder that you’re ready for “prime-time”, because you get your reports done on time. It demonstrates accountability. Right there, I said the one word I hope you’ll get out of the Uniform Guidance is the word “accountability”. This is one way you show that you’re accountable. It also shows that you can effectively implement your grant, because you’re able to get reports out and get them submitted on time. And it’s a great way to increase goodwill. Let me tell you this from an auditor’s perspective, when reports are consistently late, a couple of things go through our minds. One is that there’s really bad news and you don’t want to tell me. People hate to give bad news, so they’ll just delay sending those reports in, thinking that somehow, it’ll be better tomorrow. So, when I see reports that are late, I think, “Ooh, bad news. They don’t want to tell me something’s gone south.” Or, I think “Complete chaos. That things are so chaotic they can’t even get their reports produced, let alone reported on time.” So, this is more than reporting, when you miss those deadlines, it’s almost more of a symptom of a bigger problem. I always look at that and I don’t think that suddenly you can’t read a calendar, I think there are bigger problems in there, whenever I see organizations are late on their reporting deadlines.
