Disclaimer: I am not an historian, I did some research about the names but I'm not claiming that it's 100% accurate for some of them.
    Pronunciation should still be accurate
I also haven't done the Archon quest yet so maybe there were a few more in there that I missed
Edit: oh my god I didn't expect the vid to explode like this, thank you for subscribing and liking the video it means a lot!

I just have one question: why Clorinde is pronounced with "i" instead of the "in" nasal sound?

    • @KomemosGI
      @KomemosGI  ปีที่แล้ว +31

@@Claushanga I'm not sure about that one to be fair, it might be one or the other the name is really old and I couldn't find any reliable source for the pronunciation. But it just sounds more logic as a french speaker to use the one closer to the English pronunciation in this case but I might be wrong

It wouldn’t make sence to say whole europe in my opinion bc it definitely is not whole of europe mainly french and a little bit of italien with dishes like the lasagna (and in the world quests there is also german but it has smth. to do with the abyss so thats why)
But yeah they have their own pronunciation but inspired by actual words and names from the region they are inspired by and in Fontaine it is mainly french (even if that wasn’t their intention)

Manet is French, they probably got the name from the surname of Édouard Manet. Arouet is also a French surname, probably from the surname of François-Marie Arouet. Boucicaut, real name Jean II Le Maingre, was a French military leader. Bruneau is a correct spelling as well but is usually used as a surname. Boileau similarly likely is from Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux. Mequignon probably comes from Auguste Eugène Méquignon. Moniotte is also a surname. As you can see a number of the NPC names are surnames of notable French figures which I think is pretty cool. Lilienne is French, but very uncommon...
I believe Freminet actually comes from diver Sieur Fréminet and not the painter Martin Fréminet
There are a number of others though that you were right about that aren't French. Like Liath and Blathine are Irish, Vaneigem is Dutch, and Virgil and Gracie are Latin, although Gracie is used in a lot of languages. There's also a couple that aren't real names.

it’s so inconsistent that back when there was that drama about the dub company that genshin uses for the english dub went under fire people straight up made a theory that if the company was rlly so shitty then maybe they were the reason all the sumeru names were so badly pronounced (cause maybe they have some hand in how they director directs the pronounciations). also localization in general i mean raiden’s signature’s name was supposed to be a reference to a famous sword in japan (Kusanagi no Tsurugi) but then got changed from Kusanagi no Inabikari to Engulfing Lightning which sounds cool but i miss the old version which couldve also been called Grasscutter’s Light in english or something and is IMO even cooler. For anyone curious, Christian De Neuvillette is one of the 3 main characters of Cyrano de Bergerac, a play by Edmond Rostand (haven't watched Cyrano with Peter DInklage but I really haven't heard much good about it). If you expect Cyrano to appear later, well don't, because you saw him! Cyrano is actually a surname, his true name being Savinien De Cyrano, and Ligniere IS a friend of Cyrano in the play. Their dialogue in the game is a ref to what happens in the play.
But we'll never get to play Savinien... unless he pulls a Rana?
As for other names, many like Arouet, and Manet are the surnames of old famous french people (Arouet is Voltaire's true surname, Boileau and Riqueti De Mirabeau are authors, Corneille a playwright, Boucicaut a businessman, Manet a painter, and Vaneigem a belgian writer). Also in Lyney's story quest, the person introducing him is Robert Houdin, known as Houdini!

Nah nope. I'm french. It has nothing to do with nobility. Everyone is called that way. The only time a non noble is not called that way it's as way to insult the person appearence by calling them by their statue (ex: "Pleutre" which is similar to calling someone as looking as disgusting as a homeless toad)
Demoiselle is old form of Mademoiselle (Ma Demoiselle). It's for young girls (under 30 yo). Madame (Ma Dame) is for older women be it married or not.
The usage of both in the current days:
Mademoiselle is still in use but mostly towards kids or teens (because the state decided to change and makes every girl be administratively be called Madame on papers regardless of their age). But it's still better to call a young woman Mademoiselle, (it's makes us feel not old lol)
Some people use a contracted form of it as "Mam'zelle" to catcall usually.
Madame is use just like Monsieur. But some times old people will call people 3 times younger than them as "Jeune fille" or "Jeune homme" (which mean Young lady/Young man)

@@narudayo5053 Ah, thank you very much! Yeah, that's kinda what I thought? Madame and Monsieur are basically like Missus and Mister in English, yeah? (I guess without the missus having to be married, lol. XD) And Mademoiselle is like Miss? (Although, we use Miss for any unmarried woman, regardless of age.) But I appreciate the clarification on Demoiselle! :D

Same thing you’ll see that in both madame and mademoiselle there is a « ma » before, it juste means « my ». So demoiselle is lady and mademoiselle is my lady sort of. It’s also the same with « monsieur » « mon » means my and « sieur » means sir (it’s just not used anymore in current french)

I see that many players forget that Fontaine has also some Ancient Greek names and mythology in it. Furina=Fury from Furies, Erinyes, Fortress of Meropide(it's from Meropis a fictional island by an Ancient Greek writer), Oceanids, etc.
