After the three cackling witches disappeared, Kirk asks Spock for a comment.
Spock says, "Very bad poetry."
Funny every time.
My ex-wife, who hated science fiction and particularly Star Trek, actually enjoyed this episode.
Yes, this WAS the "Halloween show", originally broadcast a few days before Halloween, 1967.
I met Antoinette Bower (Sylvia) at a convention, she said this was one of her favorite roles. Great acting on her part. Looks like they were desperate in the props department. Sylvia & Koreb as they really were….a couple of cocktail shrimp from lunch with some pipe cleaners & blue fur glued on.
I LOVED the alien reveal in the end when I was a kid. I'd never seen a design so alien in science fiction before (much like I'd never seen a design as unique as the Enterprise).
"Don't let her touch the wand, Captain." Oh, _that's_ what we're calling it?
Robert Bloch is a FAMOUS writer who started off doing a lot of Lovecraftian writing (and interacted a bunch with Lovecraft). The note about these two aliens serving 'the Old Ones' is very much a Lovecraftian reference.
He did a lot of sci fi and weird fiction, and went on to write the screenplay for a small movie you may have heard of, Psycho.
IMHO Uhura would have been an excellent choice to take the command chair in this episode.
1000%
That would have been amazing and you are so right...literally the perfect moment for Uhura to have been in command.
Makes zero sense in any military command structure for a communication officer to take command of a ship.
You have to be of a command rank to take the chair. DeSalle is despite his red uni as you noted he used to have gold. That is an error to give him a red. Chekov wears gold too
@@generoberts9151 except Scotty wears red also. And Uhura is the same rank as Sulu, she should have been next, but it was a few years too soon.
@RLucas3000 Communication officers have an entirely different career path than the command career path.
In no military structure would a communication officer ever be eligible to take command of a ship.
"Bones.....Doc" 🤣
"Iron Maiden 🤟" 😂 Wasn't expecting that. The reference to the Old Ones was Robert Bloch's nod to his favorite writer, H.P. Lovecraft.
Sylvia and the Halloween episode. Bones looking for his next drink jokes never get old.
Robert Bloch - noted crime, horror and sci-fi/fantasy writer - notable works the novel Psycho
Another production note: in the final scene, the unsettling sounds of the dying creatures was that of baby alligators which, I'm sure, was specifically selected to trigger our primitive brain.
I instantly recognized this memorable sound when watching a documentary about alligators... 🐊
Karob's outfit was used on an episode, of all things, of Gilligan's Island.
They were both Paramount
This was Chekov’s first appearance on the show, hence his “I’m not that green” line and the insane wig. It was held back for Halloween.
Apparently Matt Jefferies was not initially fond of the split level Bridge because he knew it would complicate filming with the bulky cameras of the day. That said the Bridge was a complete set all around, but we just rarely got to see the starboard side beyond Spock’s station. Also the turbolift was originally supposed to be oriented directly behind the command chair, but the turbolift’s position was changed to offer a more dramatic view in the same frame as the command chair-and we see that numerous times throughout the series.
DREXLER told me that the viewscreen faces forward and not offset like was shown in that technical manual. Jefferies told him that.
Also notable as the episode where Kirk corrected himself on calling McCoy "Bones." In the dungeon, he cut himself short when saying Bones, and called him "Doc."
A bit of trivia about the wizard costume in this episode, it appeared in two other popular 1960's tv shows, Bob Denver wore it in a dream sequence in the Gilligan's Island episode "Lovey's Secret Admirer" and then it was seen in the Bewitched episode "Samantha's Bad Day In Salem"
The actor playing Jackson was the red shirt in the previous episode who stepped on the exploding rock on that planet with the giant lizard head computer.
uhura was suppose to be in charge of the bridge... since scotty spock and kirk was on the surface.. the suits wouldnt let roddenberry let her be in charge...
There is a significant subset of science fiction stories that take magic, rather than science, as their theme. So "Catspaw" is not really that odd, in that respect. I like this episode, and especially Antoinette Bower's great performance. When she gets angry and says that line about: "You will be swept away...your men, your ships...your WORLDS!!!" Still gives me chills, all these decades later!
@ 3:15 (right after the writer & director credits) Kirk: Leaving Assistant Chief Engineer DeSalle in charge... He apparently got the same incentive for a division change as Geordie La Forge (and another missed opportunity to put Uhura in the chair).
Chekov in the bad wig - an early in the 2nd season indicator - this is in fact the first episode in production this season but the air date was Oct. 27th.
Yes, and they were still working out his character. In this episode he is portrayed as something of an annoying twit.
1970s syndication had this shown as the first episode of season 2. They aired in PRODUCTION ORDER. Starting with the DVDs they used AIRDATE ORDER.
I love this episode. Although a few things about it are kind of humorous. One thing I love is how Kirk, McCoy, and Spock after the teaser beam down on top of a big rock. They then have to climb down off the rock. Couldn't the Transporter beam them down to the flat terrain surrounding the rock?! And according to Spock that was the exact spot that Jackson beamed up to the ship. And Spock is famous for his exactitude. So we can probably assume when he said that that we can take it literally. So a zombified Jackson when he called up to the ship to beam up actually took the time to climb up on a big rock before calling up to the ship to beam up??!! And why in his zombified state didn't he fall backwards off the rock before beaming up??!! And I love the original fx too. For those who think the original fx were subpar if you look closely in this episode the creators of the original fx, in a tiny bit of realism, even took the time to create a thin atmosphere around Pyrus 7 in all of the orbital shots. But your right about the turtlenecks! And Chapel wasn't a new arrival in season two. She was in a number of episodes of season one.
Fun fact: According to the series bible, Uhura was fourth in command of the Enterprise, so she should have been the one in the chair this episode. But because of network paranoia, she never actually got to run the ship. It was one of Roddenberry's irritants that some of the progressive ideas he wanted to implement could never go anywhere.
Shatner's delivery has nothing to do with the order of filming. He developed that delivery style during his theater days, and stuck to it through most of his career. He tends to fall into it at moments of high emotion or stress, but it's a performance style, not a personal reaction to anything going on off camera. Besides which, no production ever films in script sequence. That just isn't a thing. You have to film in whichever order is convenient, i.e., all the scenesand/or shots on one set/location are done at a time, then you move on to the next set/location, etc. So for exemple, all the scenes that were done in the dungeon would have been filmed at the same time, then they would have done all the scenes in the main hall, and so on. Likewise, you film all the shots in a scene that face in one direction, then you move the camera and film the scene again in another direction, and so on. It's why scenes that have a lot of characters can take a long time to film, because coverage of each character has to be done separately and then pieced together in editing.
Shatner said in an interview that he was in a play that people were leaving and started talking that way to “WILL...THEM... BACK...TO...THEIR...SEATS!”
Stylized directing was not encouraged in episodic network television at that time.
Hi, @WarpReactor....an addendum..
Did you notice the pendant Sylvia wore is the cat's collar? The close up of Sylvia focuses on that crystal pendant that is also on the black cat.
This is a truly terrible episode. They wanted to make a Halloween episode for sure. As season 2 progresses you will see them trying out a lot of stuff as cancellation rumors were always flying.
@Warp Reactor I'm being as have as I possibly can. 😂
I think Uhura is fourth in succession for command. Then Sulu. Then who knows? DeSalle is just standing the Officer Of The Watch. That's why he's in command this time. I like to think that we never see Uhura as Officer Of The Watch because her watches are so uneventful when she's in charge.
I think Pevney lingered on some shots for the audience to get a sense of what was happening. Like when Sulu is unlocking the shackles. You need time for the audience to see that he's like a zombie.
The way the line is delivered by Marcuse about testing the big three makes it seem, to me, that he wasn't testing them. Korob thought he could scare them off or tempt them. When it failed he needed to appear to be in control so he said Oh I was only testing you.
This is the rare occasion when Kirk admits he's using his charm as a means to gain the advantage.
The episode that proves that even bad Star Trek isn't so very bad.
I remember this episode. The German title translates roughly to "the haunted house in space"
"The Old Ones" is a Lovecraft reference... even George RR Martin uses it, I think Stephen King too, they were ahead of their time for borrowing Lovecraft themes. EDIT: Air date: October 27, 1967, you called it
"what if the cat's the one in charge...?" -- Oh, well spotted.
(2:07) I guess that's sanity check for Kirk and Greg. Bones is fine, he's got all the laudanum in the world. (27:39) Also it's a staff, not a wand. And it's in good hands.😂
Α True Classic kinda like the Squire of Gothos in atmosphere and settings.
I liked this one better than when I was a kid. Even then I was thinking that they couldn't have found a less attractive female villain. 🤢
Chekov was cast to attract a younger female audience because he resembled Davy Jones from "The Monkeys" tv show.
First airing was 10/27/67 Happy Halloween.👻☠
Hello, @WarpReactor and friends!
I always thought this was a strange episode, kind of interesting but a bit weak on storyline. Those long shots I think were intended to increase suspense, but were actually an excuse for eating some time since the story was so limited. Where I think they could have added to the story and consequences would have been rounding out the threat of invasion, as Sylvia (is that Isis? 😉) seemed to have in mind. Clearly, this species would be prone to abuse their new physical reality to be cruel, despite having at least some individuals, such as Koreb, who were determined to be peaceful. Koreb recognized that fault in their beings, but that concept was really left hanging out with no real substance. I have to admit, I do love the insect/bird creatures shown once the veil was pulled back on these creatures.
I do like this episode...but I have reservations about it.
I really agree with you on this one.
Perhaps best to just say, "fascinating."
Thanks for Q's info on this one. Yeah, I always remembered it as a Halloween episode, to be watched just before going trick-or-treating when I was a kid.
Until Prodigy then,
LLAP & Vulc'n'Roll, my friend!
🖖🤘
Agree on all points especially the alien 'reveal' (definitely the strongest moment of the episode)!
Thank you for always being here, my friend!
Peace and Long Life!
Vulc 'N' Roll!
DeSalle becomes a regular in the fan series _Star Trek New Voyages._ And, credits to Navy beans, the fan actor is MUCH more charismatic.
In the infamous Blooper Reel, we are treated to Kelley breaking character when he is supposed to be stoned-faced, but cracks up when Shatner pulls one hand out from the manacle to scratch his crotch. In the scene where the controlled Scotty and Sulu first appear, Doohan stumbles down the steps and goes into a drunk routine. The scene where Kirk kicks the club out of McCoy's hand: apparently he wasn't ready for that maneuver because Kelley looks very angrily at Shatner.
I love this departure from usual Trek :)
What's good bro!? Naturally you'd remember Desalle from "The Squire of Gothos" be moved from navigator to asst chief engineer in a command position was interesting. Keep trekkin!
He was also in "This Side of Paradise", still in the gold shirt. That's where we first heard you nickname him "James Vanderbeek", Warp Reactor. I think he's good here, but I preferred both of the other episodes he was in!
@@sarahfullerton6894 I forgot about that when he showed McCoy those plants.
@@SBatts-vn1bd , yes, and, later, had the fight with Sulu!
iirc there is a scene in DS9 where Jake is at school, and the class subject on the computer is the intergalactic creatures.
Regarding the witches and their attire...televisions back then weren't very good with regard to resolution...so it didn't matter.
Just a note. That “…credits to navy beans” comment was an awkward attempt to update an old saying; “I’ll bet you NICKELS to navy beans…”. Unfortunately the update is clunky and doesn’t roll off the tongue like the original.
Robert Bloch who wrote this episode is a very popular scifi writer back in the day.
Most known for writing Psycho.
Great reaction, and I'm glad you enjoyed this episode, although I'm not sure why that lately, over the past few of your reactions, you keep implying that McCoy is s heavy drinker, when there's been nothing in any of the TOS episodes, which would indicate that to be a part of his character.
Yes, McCoy did make himself a mint julep on Omicron Seti 3, but I hardly think that was more than a one-time thing, while under the influence of the spores.
Exactly. While the good doctor enjoys his vices, there's no evidence that he's out of control with it. He can clearly handle his liquor and I certainly hope our reactor can see that there's more to McCoy than that.
"Bonnie-kin Bonnie-kin" Cats Tale TFO Star Trek Online
another great reaction. I never really picked up on the "Credits to Navy Beans" comment before, but I do have a follow-up trivia question for all, was this the first Trek episode to use the term "Credits"?
I don't recall this from Season 1.
Well, in "Mirror Mirror", although Season 2, as well, dark, "Mirror" universe Kirk tries to bribe our good, prime universe Spock from the brig. Part of that bribe was "credits"!
When I was a kid I didn’t get that line. Like why is he crediting Navy beans? Then later I figured it out.
and remember Catspaw is really S2 Episode 1
Kirk will always be the first to come to and the last to be knocked out.
This was a Halloween episode for the kids....probably 1968. Some TOS episodes are not good...this is one of them.
1967
AGREED.I NEVER liked this episode,at all.
@@user-be7tc2bd6ethe worst is THE ALTERNATIVE FACTOR. At least Spock’s Brain has hot chicks
@@kunserndsittizen2655 I don't even remember what that episode was about. But,I do remember Spock's Brain tho. LOL.
@@user-be7tc2bd6e where that guy Lazarus kept falling off the same cliff
When this first aired, and then in reruns, this episode always left me wanting. It's missing the oomph of a good plot. And the concept is already a bit old even by the second season of TOS, as you noted the crew has already come across aliens on more than one occasion that can make things appear and disappear, and mind-wipe the crew. And fights and effects always seemed a bit hokey.
close, 47 frequently appears on Star Trek. pay attention and look for it.
I never hated this episode. Actually there aren’t any that I do hate, that being said it’s not up there either. I still prefer TOS over TNG by a long shot. In fact I’ve only watched a couple of TNG episodes and the movies. To me from I have watched always felt like rehashes of TOS. A quick question for you. What did Spock discover in Kirk’s toilet. Answer- the captains log.
Try TNG from season 3 on
October 27 1967 it first aired
A cat changing into a woman. They'd never do that.
Not just you. The original planets look better. The new FX are occasionally better than the old, but mostly they just messed everything up.
Yeah this episode was always pretty wack but I've watched it dozens of times over the DECADES since the my childhood back in the late 70s. Still enjoyable to this day even though it's a completely goofball episode. There are a few TOS episodes that are pretty horrible and this is one of them. But strangely it's still enjoyable IMO.
Greetings! You just experienced one of the biggest drops in rank between two episodes in all of Star Trek. The Doomsday Machine is the #2 episode of the entire series, this one is *#75*. That's almost the bottom, and the lowest-ranking episode of Season 2. For me, the biggest problem with this episode is the supernatural element. Way too much fantasy for a science fiction series. About the only reason it's above the bottom is the acting performances by both the regular and guest cast - really good stuff here. And to think this was the first episode *produced* in Season 2.
One of THE worst and most embarrassingly-cringy Star Trek episides out there, IMO; right down in the muck with Plato's Stepchildren (all apologies to Alexander).
For me this is the weakest episode of Season 2. The true forms of Sylvia and Korob are just too eugh.
One of my least favorite episodes. Not a big Halloween fan. The ending reveal of what Korob and Sylvia really look like - pipe cleaners and ribbons from the supply store?? Really?? Are there any paper clips in there somewhere? 😂
Plus, for Sylvia, it's too bad they didn't have a giant bag of catnip, to make her kitty crazy.😂😅
The Halloween episode!!
