I have a little butane stove for emergencies and camping, but my house has a propane stove and furnace, so I'm good as long as the fuel lasts. Somewhere in the back of my shed I have a propane grill, a little BBQ and a couple of cans of Sterno with a little metal X to put on top for cooking. I find that camping equipment, such as USB charged lights, are very good for power outages. Jon in rural BC, Canada
I used a colmean fuel stove for years in my kitchen. The fuel used to be a lot cheaper but still goes a long way. No co2, but burns oxygen so keep a window open.
Last night when I was watching another video on canned fuel, I was wondering the same thing. Thank you for bringing this up, as it answers my question.
I have some Sterno Fuel in my preps. I also have some small chafing dishes on metal racks. You can use 3 or 4 tea light candles under the chafing dishes. Slow going for sure, but the candles will keep water hot for 2 hours. Hot enough for instant coffee and tea. Dollar Tree has packs of the tea light candles. A good investment in my opinion. Thank you, Chef Prepper. Another fantastic, down to Earth video from you. Keep them coming...you would not believe the mass majority of people who never think ahead.
Hello CharlotteCMGH, Those tea candles are very handy and a very good investment in my opinion too! We have a Tea Candle video coming out very soon! Thank you for watching and your kind words.
During the six days after a hurricane left us with downed wires and no electric, and before I learned all about Sterno type cans, cooking over candles and small wood burning table top grills, I had to shift for myself with coffee in the morning. Not ideal, but I put some drip grind (my normal coffee) into a jar with a cup of water and shook it for about two minutes. I then put it through a coffee filter. The coffee taste was fine, strength was fine, but of course, the coffee was cold. As it was the middle of summer and in the 90's, this was not the worst thing. But when my neighbor, who had gas fuel offered me a cup of coffee, I jumped on it. It was delicious. I promised myself that I would arrange to never be without a way to at least boil water for coffee and tea. I didn't even mind eating out of cans for that week. But I did miss a "normal" cup of coffee. So glad to learn all this stuff from online YT'ers. Campers already know this stuff, but there are always newbies to any craft or skill, so basic teaching of basic needs are always crucial. People say, "Everybody knows this already." No, they absolutely don't. Young people don't know it, and those who never had experience or were taught by someone, don't know it. Basic learning of life essentials are always needed. How else will anyone learn anything?
I was going to stock up on fuel cans like this but then I found that hand sanitizer was WAY cheaper and is ethanol instead of methanol. I picked up 8 gallons of it for $1.99 a gallon when it was on clearance after the lockdowns ended. It also has the added benefit of being able to be used as a sanitizer.
@@cmont5636 It works really well. It's 70% ethanol so it burns hot and no smell. I prefer to distill it off so that makes it 100% but I still prefer to temper it to around 80% as it burns longer and still hot. The other thing I like about it is that the liquid sanitizer makes for a good fire starter. Pile the kindling, pour a little sanitizer on and light it. Good and hot fire in no time and no residue so you can cook on it.
Thank you for your video. I have the old fashioned Coleman white gas stove and it's good to take it out at least once a year to use. Make sure all the gaskets are holding and all is good. The little two hole cast iron wood fueled cook stove just sits in the barn waiting, ... and waiting, ... lol But I'll tell you about the slickest heater cooker you'll ever make is with an old tobacco can that a roll of TB fits into snugly then soak the TP with Gas line de-icer, (Alcohol) and use the lid as a snuffer. I'll cut a couple of lids out of different sized cans to place on top of the TP and this works as a heat regulator. This unit will run for a long time. If the TP starts to turn black, it's out of fuel. This is a wet heat so be careful inside because it will make it rain. Have a great one and good luck.
Hello daval, Good idea Daval! Your stove could also probably be used as an emergency heater for a small area. I have experimented with a similar set up and want to again. Thank you for watching and sharing.!
I have some shortening a put in a no. 10 can and stuck about 5 stick candles in. It’s cheap and burns for a long while. I haven’t used it for cooking but I’m sure it’ll work just fine.
Thank you for the excellent demonstrations for alternative cooking. All of this was hard to explain just exactly how cooking with Sterno is done, safe, and affordable. The wine might lighten things up in the emergency scenario, too, God forbid!
Sterno just came out with a NEW CANNED HEAT ..called Sterno CAMPING WICK Canned heat .. HIGH HEAT OUTPUT ! ..it's a liquid fuel "POWER PAD TECHNOLOGY... Claims 6-hour run time per can ! Cost is around $3.80 -$4 a can .. available now at Walmart... I would love to see a test of these new Sterno liquid power wick fuel canisters?
I am happy with my Gas One which uses butane or propane but for a buck a can it would be wise to have a good second option. Where do you get the sterno quik for a buck? I always enjoy watching your show because unlike others, you put things to the test. Thank you!
Hello Lori D, I get them at local dollar stores. I haven't got any in the last month or so. If they haven't went up in price , they will soon! Thank you Lori D for watching.
These work, but the fu es are toxic, so you need to use either outside or near an open window. Not for indoor use. Check the Ready Hour brands. More money, but they are safe for indoor use.
great video.. on another video you showed 1 sterno took 26 minutres to boil.. theoritcally would 2 sternos decrease that time? have you tested for that?
When using your 4 can "stove" it is probably NOT a good idea to stack up other full fuel containers as "legs" for your grill, as they are likely to get hot enough to blow the lids off and cause some serious excitement in the kitchen area as you try to pull all that fuel fire out after the lids blew off and shot it all over the place.
anything liquid or even gel is bulky and heavy compared to some dry fuels. I have sterno, but would love to know how to DIY for the dry fuel tabs or just about the commercial ones.
so where do we get the fuel and the stove because i live in KY and ive never seen them around. second how do you turn it off to save whats left of it when youre done cooking because you would like to use it over again if you can if SHTF
I VE WISH IVE KNOWN ABOUT THESE CANNED HEAT WHAT A GODSEND I SPOTTED THEM AT MY LOCAL NORTH CAROLINA PIGGY WIGGLY GROCERY STORE $4 &5 IAM GOING TO BUY AT LEAST 15 OR MORE CANS FOR EMERGENCY COOKING AN HEAT THERE REALLY ARE ROCKET SCIENTIST ON EARTH 😂😂😂😂😂

😀👍Good Stuff, Great Tips......I didn't know you can use multiple cans close together like that.

I watched a video to the trade this. Have you used the hand sanitizer filled containers for fuel at least once I am wondering how it performs?

I am planning an updated version of testing various Sterno type fuels.
I use Green Haven biofuel liquid. Green, safe, odorless. I use a Trangia 25 to cook with

Hello cynb79,
You are welcome and thank you for watching!
I just watched another video where they recommend a carbon monoxide dector when using sterno inside. Do you recommend that?
Thank you very much 😊
Hello, NIKH
You are welcome! And thank you for watching.
anything liquid or even gel is bulky and heavy compared to some dry fuels. I have sterno, but would love to know how to DIY for the dry fuel tabs or just about the commercial ones.
I use liquid multi fuel stoves like Coleman, MSR, and my favorite Svea 123 and I kill the wild hogs around here for my pork and make my own bacon 🥓.
Where do you find $1 sterno cans please? The cheapest one I find on Amazon is $2/can!
so where do we get the fuel and the stove because i live in KY and ive never seen them around. second how do you turn it off to save whats left of it when youre done cooking because you would like to use it over again if you can if SHTF
I get the Quickflame from the Dollar General and sometimes Dollar Tree.
The Stove is available on Amazon and sometimes at Wal-Mart.
@@ChefPrepper thanks anyway, i finally found one at a Walmart
