    The Type 054 family is a good tool for PLA maritime forces, hence becoming backbone for brown+green water tasks. Size, simplicity, availability, performance, all not outstanding, but decent.
    Actually, 4K ton to 5.5K ton displacement & 135 m to 150 m length, relatively multi-purpose warships seems to be ideal for current circumstances for most nations with coast lines. (Even newest surface warships, named FDI or FTI, for Marine National of France is in that category.)

    China systematically and methodically constructed a well purposed navy, the PLAN implores great versatility and IMO, the most potent surface to surface capability. Loved the discussion on the radar, the 054B will be integrated within the BG as you indicated, a support ship, the 052s and 55s will pickup the primary long range target search, acquisition, surveillance and fire control responsibilities, as will the carrier and aviation assets. I still believe they have substantial gaps in their naval based air defense and submarine force. The HQ 9/16 series just aren’t up to the task at hand, especially compared to the USN.

      The PLAN is a collection of ships, inexperienced and untried, still in development. The PLAN won't be a world class Navy until it has extended "combat service" (i.e. extended operational experience far from China's shores). The Chinese lack developmental experience ( comparing equipment and personnel against actual real world experience, then tweaking gear and training), but if the CCP survives the current economic tsunami and they give themselves some time, they might be able to sail a true "Blue Water" Navy.

    There is a limit to how fast you can go when using a towed array. If you go too fast, you degrade the ability of the sonar to detect underwater threats and put huge amounts of strain on the ship.which may lead to cracking as on RN towed array vessels.

  • @nostradamus2642
    @nostradamus2642 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    I don't understand why China still intends to build many more 054A while construction of 054B has already started. The late version of 054A with VDS and towed sonar array is a good ship for 1st island chain operation. Those YJ-83 may not be replaceable 1-for-1 with YJ-12 like in the DDG Shenzhen upgrade (16 x YJ-83 replaced by 16 x YJ-12) because the 054A displacement may only support 4 YJ-12.

      If it is a heavily modified 054A with a stretched hull and rearranged superstructure, then it can be moderately better than 054A/P. If it is an entirely new design, then it can be quite a bit better than 054A/P

    - Will thes steam turbine result in shorter range than a diesel engine?
    - I am a bit surprised that the Type 054B did not try to squeeze in a second helicopter to augment its anti-sub search capabilities. It would partially mitigate its lack of speed when escorting carriers.
    - It seems to me that this would be ideal to escort convoys, if it has the range. The PLA's greatest weakness (IMHO) has less to do with their equipment, but rather the Malacca Strait Dilemma.

      basic design of 054 variants started in the 1990's. First 054 started construction at end of 1999. Back then, gas turbine engine wasn't something PLA could count on. Even now, I don't know if the marine gas turbine used by PLAN is compact enough for 054 sized ship.

  • @lunchik2689
    @lunchik2689 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    All frigates have to slow down to use towed array sonars, this has nothing to do with diesels more to do with the drag of the array, frigates will sprint then cut power and drift when hunting subs if they want to minimise ship noise, gas turbines are better for this since they can get up to full power a lot quicker. The type 054A mounts its diesels on anti-vibration rafts which is how it achieves its noise reduction using diesels. Gas turbines are more energy dense but the ducting it needs to function eats into the above waterline space, so its swings and roundabouts wrt space efficiency. The main rationale for moving away from diesels is that they are limited in power output the 4 sets used in the 054A is what limits its size/displacement/speed and there aren't any medium speed diesels (low speed ones used on commercial shipping can be a lot more powerful but are inflexible when speed changes are required!) that are appreciably more powerful, i.e. to have a larger ship they need to move away from a diesel power plant. In short the conclusions may be correct but the rationale used to justify it is just hearsay!

    2. Europe FREMM (2010s; 2012-current)
    France 6000tons, Italy 6700tons; both 32 VLS
    3. UK Type 26 frigate (2020s; 2022-2030)
    6900tons; 48 VLS
    4. U.S FFG(X) - Updated version of Italy's FREMM (2020s; 2022-2030)
    7300tons; 32 VLS
    1. Firstly for the flagship Europe's FREMM, the tonnage is slightly heavier due to the workload that France and Italy took on the Atlantic Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. 32 VLS are needed for grounded assault and anti-air needs in that settings. However, they don't need anything higher than that, because they are likely being covered by the fighter jets or the mission area has ground support.
    2. Second, for the UK type 26 frigate, due to the financial crisis the Brits are having, the number of ships built won't be high. As a result, in order to max out the attack capability, the number of VLS is increased to 48.
    3. Thirdly, for the U.S FFG(X), the force projection of the U.S fleets is still very huge, so the gross tonnage is the highest out of all frigates to fulfill the blue sea mission. However, the VLS won't be as high as the UK type because there is already enough fire support from other units in the fleet.
    4. In the end, for the Spain F110-class frigate, due to the nature of the geopolitics around Europe, Spain doesn't need that high of attack capability. So they only got 16 VLS, but there would be enough of the frigate in the future to distribute firepower evenly in the late 2020s. However, you can see that France and Italy filter out Spain from the FREMM program, and the Brits won't be building ships with Spain too. The defense policy and the measurement of Spain's military are designated going to be more isolated from NATO. France and Italy are isolating themselves(and discriminating the Spain of course.) as a group while the UK is not even the core power of NATO. The EU's military forces are falling apart. So I understand the route and choice that Spain is making.

    This is wierd. How is it possible to conceive an anti sub ship with diesel engines only and using them during ASW op? Electric motors should be a must for ASW operations at low speed and an alternative engine should be used for speedy manuvers (eg. gas turbine engine). The best ASW ships combine at least 2 types of engines including a silent electric type (FREM). Well it looks like the 54B will fix this prob of the 54A.

    To me it looks like the typical AESA radar spam and a missile and propulsion update. Unfortunately the current environment looks like China needs the numbers more than the quality so they are forced to mass produce current designs instead of developing next gen ones and we might not see it in a while, instead seeing more 054As and 052Ds.
    Whatever, at least we have a semi-insane simulator to have a feel of new ships! F94725D39299B5F0

      It's because of the recent hybrid engine and Full electric propulsion integrated system installed on 003 to be tested on the sea before it can be implemented on other warships.
      After the 003 propulsion system tested on sea then the Chinese can be convince that the system can now to be installed on type 054B which later will be on 052E and 055A with the future plan of 058.

    I consider this ship, like other chineese ships, is on the weak side as refer to the point of defense guns. For shore bombardment adopt a 100 mm that is weak for air defense, while the ideal for shore bombardmenter is the 127mm (eg. OTO MELARA w VOLCANO). For air defense the 76mm (eg. OTO MELARA RAPID) is better but it also should be used in combination with a certain amount of 30-35mm guns. This ship forgo the 76 for a 100 and has only one 30mm. The number of guns should be one 127 (for shore bombardment not for AA) a couple of 76 and two to four 30/35 (all specialized for AA and asimmetrical).

      It has only a 30 mm gun but with a fire rate of 10000-11000 rounds per minute and a muzzle speed over 3000.
      The gun itself is more capable than anything else there is. By a lot...
      The radars and firing controls we Will hopefully never know.

    Well ...if we look at Chinese today naval attitude I can say that is advancing in other words is catching up & slowly is closing the gab & of course the situation may get fairly worse in the near future !!! Because now china is organized & master strength & seriously attempting to become great , great power at least in the east !!! Have perhaps intensions in the future to conquered Asia !!! We can see of how quickly is building numerous naval war ships using workers fast by the hundreds enormous crowds compering as ants !!! Then what is the reason ??? Why she needs very many ??? Because she needs plenty of raw material & naval bases to guarantee her existence & of course AMERICA have to keep an eye of this development by staying constantly strong in the far east therefore to hold tight & check her advance !!!

      I am Chinese, and I am very happy to participate in your discussion.I think the first thing you should be concerned about is our shipbuilding capacity. We have 3,200 shipyards, 19 of which are very large. The construction of the new generation of technology upgrades for each ship has slowed down.In fact, it doesn't take much. Ten large shipyards can build 50 large surface ships at one time if they only need ships and aircraft carriers without any problems. For example, 052 series ships and 055 large ships with mature technology levelOr is it not a problem to build three at the same time according to the technology of the third aircraft carrierAll mature weapon systems can be installed on it.

    If China was confident about it's military capabilities and the strength of it's economy it would have done something tangible about all the Western leaders visiting Taiwan.
    The fact that China has done basically nothing shows that the leaders in Beijing have little confidence in the Chinese nation.

      This is called strategic determination in China. No matter what you think of it as cowardice or how it is, at least China has achieved the greatest results in the past conflicts at almost the best time. For example, in the border conflicts of 1962 and 1979, if Chinese policymakers really so-called 'lack of confidence in the Chinese nation', they can only say that you have completely equated China with Russia, This is the fundamental reason why countless Western viewpoints always backfire on China-related Affairs.
