Has Vancouver Become Canada's Best City? | Returning After 10 Years

  • I wasn't expecting to be this impressed! Vancouver is Canada's 3rd largest city, has perpetually rainy and overcast weather and the most expensive real estate in the whole country! BUT.... it is 'NICE'. If you are looking for a very high caliber of living with nature right at your doorstep, Vancouver might just be the best fit for you if you are looking to live in Canada. I always had the opinion that Toronto was the best city, but the last 3 years have definitely changed things. Join me on a tour of this gorgeous city where I'll take you to downtown, a bikeride around the SeaWall, Chinatown and Granville Island. And let me know in the comments what your experience of Vancouver was! xx

    I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I am an affiliate for both companies, but I pay for my own policies.

    Love Vancouver , have been there many times and every time I go back I like it even more. Please make more videos about the different neighbourhoods in the city . There's a lack of old buildings in the city but there are lots of beautiful streets and neighbourhoods with a lot of character like Strathcona.

    visited all the main cities of Canada a couple of years ago and the impression was, Vancouver being the prettiest out of all but ridiculously expensive. Toronto was absolutely massive but didn't really make as much of an impression. Montreal, even though a bit smaller and on the colder side of Canada, there's something about that city I just love so much.

      @@rchilde1 The idea that cities have a soul is something perpetuated by the local tourism bureau. Montreal has better bakeries and better bread even in chain grocery stores. Vancouver has better coffee. Montreal has bigger, better and more festivals (not including the folk fest which is much bigger in Vancouver), museums, galleries and concerts, so many that you can get exhausted trying to go to them all. Vancouver has a better variety of things to do outdoors, so many that you can get exhausted trying to do them all. It’s better to be a dog owner in Vancouver unless you’re a renter. Vancouver has better shopping but if you’re in Montreal, you can go to New York to shop over the weekend.

    Hi Alina, you’ve made an amazing video of Vancouver, with many stunning shots of the downtown area, Stanley park, etc! I think you were holding a bel cafe cup…love their coffee. If you haven’t tried JJ Bean yet I’d highly recommend it, too.
    I’ve lived in Vancouver since the 90’s and still love it so much! I was born in the USSR and at age 6 we moved to Toronto, where I grew up. I travelled out west in my 20s, fell in love with BC and moved here a couple of years later. Have not looked back! I still visit family in TO and like the changes I’ve seen but YVR is home. Vancouver is a wreck tonight. Hundreds live on the streets, and cops are everywhere. Downtown reeks of desperation and piss. People dying from overdoses everyday, far more dangerous than Covid ever was. Good luck getting a decent place to live without 3 or 4 roommates. It's nice to pretend things are great but I honestly can't see what you're seeing. We have yet to break 20C and there are NO JOBS. Be a tourist. Bring Cash. Go outside the city for nice things. Living here is a different story.

It was a wonderful time in a fabulous city and it was always such great fun showing it off to those (and there were many) who came to visit. I'm now back comfortably residing in my home town of Halifax yet the memories of the friends I made and the wonderful times that I had in BC will always bring a smile to me of a time very well spent.

    Vancouver's secret is good Urban Planning. It is turning itself from a car centric city into a people centric city, by improving walkability, bikability, public transport, density, green infrastructure, and green spaces, etc. But I think still the suburban areas has some way to catch up with the urban core. I haven't been to Vancouver, but have analyzed the city.

    • @JayandSarah
      @JayandSarah ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you have never been here, you can't really know. The fact is, the urban planning not been very good at all. We still to this day lack a suitable rapid transit system and disasterous traffic problems. With the lack of affordability, people centric as you say, has not addressed the reality which is - people can't get out of their cars because transportation sucks and they can barely afford their cars for the most part due to ridiculous prices of housing pushing normal folks out to the edges of development with mortgages that with current interest rates will completely bankrupt large swaths of people.

    Vanoucer was my escape from crime ridden Seattle in the 90's. I was able to drive with my freinds and go to clubs, walk around the city, which is almost impossible in Seattle still.. The DTES on Hastings was always bad.. Some of my friends got hooked on drugs there. Some people r just predisposed to this I guess. But the whole city was not dangerous. There was street night life, prostitution, and all that lol. But it was safe to hang out in it back then. A 1 br in a highrise downtown was about $600/m. Many prostitutes lived in those. Life was good for them back then haha. Not to confuse with DTES people, those where gone mentally and they stayed in that area. Davie street was fun. Lots of clubs were there and nice affordable apts to live in. Check out documentary Hookers on Davie from 1984.. Just to get a feel how it was at night back then until about early 2000's when rents started going up and police started cleaning the nightlife to the point of extinction by now pretty much..

    Well, thanks for showing me a different side of Vancouver and your comparison to Toronto. I've been to both but not really. So my impressions were formed from very brief stopovers on route to somewhere else. I have a prairie dwellers dislike of the superiority of Vancouver, and the Toronto is Canada narrative fostered by the elites, and Canadian media. So, often these two centers just dismiss the rest of the country as somewhat irrelevant. So what I'm saying is preconceived notions definitely colored how I viewed both, and because I was in both for such short periods of time I didn't have time to explore, and have the preconception dispelled.
    As this video was similar in the manner to how you review ever where else you travel. I got to see Vancouver through your eyes and there is a lot to experience that is unique and good, and frankly not really known by me. You didn't hide the bad, but you put it into context. So as always, I enjoyed your video and presentation.

      I grew up in Saskatchewan so when I moved to Vancouver I was used to living in a place that was mostly ignored by the media in Canada. Back then nobody talked about Vancouver either. Almost everyone I knew from high school moved to Toronto. Then Vancouver went through several periods of growth. The city changed a lot. It was a good time to live there and observe it. You have to spend at least several weeks, or better still months, in any city to get to really know it. Most people only spend a few days visiting the major tourist attractions and that’s a shame because that’s not how locals experience it. You need to go to local parks, shop for groceries and take public transit. I visited Las Vegas this way several times. While everyone was at the casinos and shows I took the bus downtown and spoke to people waiting for the bus. I visited the university and an institute that studied desert plants, did some shopping at a local mall, talked to people on a picket line. I’m now in Montreal and so am in a better location to get to know Toronto and Ottawa better.

    I've lived here for 10 years. It's not uncommon for this kind of weather (cloudy/rainy/sunshine breaking through) all up and down the West Coast including down to San Diego. It's really not as bad as people make it out to be. I grew up and lived in NYC for 40 years. While I do miss days and days of summer sunshine, like in NY, the summers here are astounding! The best weather is going to be in July and August and sometimes early September. The sun starts to come out in April/May and then the June Gloom appears. It varies but the clouds roll in sometime by the second week of June and stay too long.
    There are a lot of TV and movies filmed in the area. One I’ve been watching on and off, Virgin River, is filmed nearby on Bowen Island.
    The prices for housing are high as they are in all the west coast cities. High housing prices drive homelessness. If you think about first, last and deposit being more than $6000, it’s hard to get in the door.
    I haven’t been to the Aquarium in a long time but they had a really interesting rainforest area in there with tiny monkeys. They used to have some sad Orca whales there and some Belugas. I don’t know what they have now.

I was photographing the city and found it fascinating to capture or video. Though you may come across the homeless in some areas, they do not bother you but do appreciated any act of kindness. They are people too. All big cities worldwide are producing their own hyper inflation (cost of living) compared to other smaller cities. As travellers, it will cost us more to visit big cities as well.
    Love your video work Alina. You made Toronto beautiful too, not to mention Montreal and Quebec!
    I have noticed some drone footage, is this stock video? I don't think just anyone can use drones in these cities.

    Wow, I was born and raised in Vancouver and it has become a very unsafe, grossly expensive drug capital city of Canada. I don't feel you tapped into so many issues. Try renting a place there and get paid enough money to cover it. You have to work 3 jobs. There is no question that there is a boatload of beauty and diversity there, but honestly it is a very tough place for people to live there now. The beaches are now polluted, they have been for years, full of e-coli and you can't swim there anymore..... and parking? $8.00 an hour. The bike routes are pretty good, but traffic congestion is not good for anyone that wants to commute. I think you checked into the niceties of Van, but exercising alone will not save you there. Nice vid though on the surface, but you really should be careful because most attacks in that are are very random.

    Having moved to Vancouver 50 years ago, I have noticed a couple of good things. Number 1 - the rainy weather is actually improving. The last 10 years has seen less cloudy raining days in the 3 months of the year that is traditionally raining and uninterrupted sunny weather for 5 months during summer and fall. In fact the summers are becoming too hot and dry. This October was heavenly. Just an observation for those that still live by the dreary Vancouver myth. In fact, on average, Toronto gets about 25 hours of more sunshine than Vancouver in a year, except this year when it rained on and off all summer in Toronto.

    I lived in Vancouver for almost a year in 2009. I'm from Rio de Janeiro , Brazil, which is also a very expensive city , so i didn´t feel that much difference in that sense . I have to say that i fell in love with Vancouver, Its a beautiful city, we really feel a great connection with nature over there and the quality of life is something spectacular. When you are born in Rio de Janeiro you really know what poverty and violence is , you also know what is like to live in a city where public transport is a mess . And Vancouver , as others " frist world " cities , are the opposite of that . I cant wait to go back there and stay as much as i like !

    Thank you for this video Alina.. I lived in Vancouver most of my life and just recently moved to Montréal in November. There are positives and negatives to this city. I have watched it change dramatically over the years.
    Some pros and cons from my perspective below :
    Pros:
    -Beautiful setting with the mountains meeting the ocean. One of the most beautiful cities in world.
    -Close to nature, close to all the Gulf islands and Vancouver Island and lots of skiing in the winter/spring
    -some of the best restaurants and lots of variety
    - pretty decent cultural scene and lots to do entertainment wise
    - becoming more and more diverse ethnically which makes the city more interesting
    -good transit system
    -clean air , low pollution
    - lots of walkable and bikeable places
    - hiking through the Endowment lands trails(UBC) down to the beach (Spanish Banks)
    - hipster Main St or Commercial Drive with lots of restaurants and bars
    - improvements made to Chinatown, cool bars and restaurants
    Cons:
    - It's become incredibly expensive and unaffordable.There is a housing crisis. Even doctors and lawyers can't afford to buy a house in the city if they have a family. There is a shortage of teachers in the public school system because they can't afford to live in Vancouver.
    Rent , real estate and property tax is through the roof. If you are leasing commercial property and trying to run a small business everything is working against you. Artists and musicians (like myself ) are being driven out of the city due to the high cost living.
    -Insane drug and homeless problem. For a city this rich there is just no excuse for it. Years and years of corruption in provincial and municipal governments allowing foreign money to be laundered through the city is part of the cause and part of the housing crisis. I have been many places in the world ( including 3rd world countries) and Vancouver's drug problem is one of the worst if not the worst I've seen. But the city likes to try hide it and pretend it isn't there instead of tackle the problem head on.
    -No real culture to grab onto.. It's a younger city and while it is becoming more ethnically diverse, these cultures are quite separated from one another. So I would say its more of a mosaic than a melting pot of cultures, although there is some First Nations/ indigenous culture and Chinese culture that is ingrained. But the latter is slowly being erased from Chinatown.
    -Socially cold and cliquey.
    -its an absolutely terrible place to date as a single person.
    So many people too concerned with their image and social capital. If you aren't part of their clique you are out.
    -Rising crime and violence, racist attacks , random attacks . More and more entitled a-holes
    Ridiculous overdevelopment of ugly , crappy condos
    -Terrible drivers. People drive way too fast. Lots of bike lanes are unsafe.
    Just does not have the history, the cultural melting pot and the liveliness and social culture of cosmopolitan Montreal or big cities in the US and Europe.
    Thanks for letting me rant about Vancouver. :) We will see how Montreal goes. It was hit hard by the pandemic but the streets are lively again and filled with people.

      You should have seen Vancouver's single scene in the early 1980's. It was beyond "sexually electric", the "beautiful people" were everywhere, and people expressed the high-energy "social atmosphere" in their driving, among other things, if a road-sign said 'slow ahead', most people accelerated like a banshee as if the highways department didn't know what they were talking about. Eventually the young adult society burnt itself out by 1990, I see that era and the 60's & 70's drug culture that came before it, Vancouver was known as "Haight-Ashbury North" in those days, as being one of the reasons Vancouver's European-Canadian culture has deteriorated in recent decades.

    I lived in Vancouver for three decades. It is indeed a clean and beautiful city and a wonderful place if you want to spend time outdoors. The shopping and restaurants are good too. But I’m in Montreal now where there’s so much more to do and so many more interesting cities I can travel to by train from here. Since I have friends and family on the west coast I can go back anytime to visit and still have all the benefits of living in Montreal. If my choice was only between Vancouver and Toronto though, Vancouver would be the winner. The Stanley Park sea wall is overrated. Next time you’re in Vancouver check out False Creek from Cambie then all the way to UBC including trails through Pacific Spirit Park.

    • @davidmarshall718
      @davidmarshall718 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was born in and lived my first 20 years in Vancouver, I am now age 60, I am not a city person but have lived in Calgary and Edmonton too. I prefer the hinterland of British Columbia and Western Alberta. I don't know how you can say the sea-wall is over-rated, it is as least as good as any ocean-side urban walkway in the world. And yes the Pacific Northwest is remote and rainy, but our only big-city neighbor Seattle USA has a lot going for it, similar to Vancouver in many ways, but very entrepreneurial and inventive, home base of Boeing, Microsoft, and Amazon.

    • @polishtheday
      @polishtheday 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidmarshall718 I like Seattle. And Portland, San Diego. But they’re not Canadian cities. When I said that the seawall was overrated I was thinking of all the other places to walk, bike, skateboard, etc., like the path you can take from Yaletown, over one of the bridges then along the shore up to Kits Beach and with a detour go all the way to Wreck Beach when the tide is out. Or one to the network of trails in Pacific Spirit Park or the North Shore. There are so many trails on the latter that even if you go every week it will take you at least a couple of years to do them all. The seawall is good for a nice walk if you live in the West End but is often full of tourists.

    • @davidmarshall718

      @@polishtheday ---- so exactly what are all these "interesting" Canadian cities you can visit by train from Montreal? Ottawa, Quebec, and Toronto.......... When I visited Toronto the one and only time in my life in 1990 for 2 weeks, I was never so glad to get out of a place............

    • @polishtheday
      @polishtheday 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davidmarshall718 I like to shop and people watch, eat and take walks in parks. I’m not interested in tourist attractions. Coffee is more important than alcohol. Others may have different definitions of what’s interesting.
      Toronto is good for shopping - everything from high end to secondhand. The coffee is better than in Montreal but not as good as in Vancouver. It has some nice beaches and little older neighbourhoods not far from downtown. The next time I’m there I want to visit the Bata Shoe Museum.
      Ottawa is wonderful in the summer. I like to visit Hog’s Back Park or just sit and have coffee on a patio downtown or west of downtown on Wellington, visit yarn and pottery shops and try different out of the way restaurants. The next time I’m there I want to visit the Glebe and go to Whole Foods.
      You can visit New York, Boston, Halifax and other places by train from Montreal.

    Just south of you, but close, are the San Juan islands. The site of site of The Pig War of 1859. The US and UK almost went to war when a Canadian farmer's pig was shot by an American farmer when ownership of the islands was still disputed. It is all National Park now. US and British troops stationed on the island during the US Civil War partied and drank alot then. It is the only US national park that flies a British flag, over the site of the Royal Marines camp.
