  • @christopherhartley6900
    @christopherhartley6900 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    "How can you pitch around him?"
    You can't walk him, you have to bowl to him, you only have 4 tactics to employ as a pace bowler to avoid being smacked around by a batsman who is on fire.
    1. Bowl 'Yorkers' these are fast deliveries which are angled at the batsman to not the ground just on or about his toes. This means that the batsman will have an extremely difficult time trying to get any leverage on the ball to get the elevation needed for a six, and will find it harder to hit the ball with sweet spot of the bat (called the middle), meaning they will also struggle to hit a four.
    2. Bowl the cricket equivalent of a change-up pitch in baseball, bowlers will have a variety of different delivers they practice, akin to a slider, knuckle ball, curve ball etc. For some bowlers in cricket the difference between their regular deliveries (akin to fast balls) and change-up variations might be 20 to 30 miles an hour. Some change-up type deliveries try to move the ball either toward or away from the batsmen in the air, this is called swing bowling. This is achieved by polishing one-sided of the ball, reducing the friction on that side as the ball passes through the air, the ball will arc towards the non-polished and slower moving side of the ball. A second type of change-up pitch is called a cutter, in this delivery the bowler rotates their wrist to the side as the deliver the ball, therefore giving the ball some sideways rotation as it is bowled, the hope is that that sideways movement will make the ball bounce away from straight-on motion.
    The final type of change-up type ball is a 'back-of-the-hand' delivery, this works by the bowler having his fingers infront of the ball when he bowls it, rather than behind as woruld be the case for all other deliveries. It is an extremely hard type of delivery to bowl accurately, but it has the benefit of being very hard for the batsmen to spot, and the ball will be travelling a lot slower than the batsmen expects of they do not spot the change-up.
    3. Try to change the angle of attack to the batsmen; a bowler can bowl from either the left or right side of the stumps, and can choose to bowl from tight to the stumps, or wider in the crease. The analogy here would be imagine a pitcher moving to pitch from somewhere other than the centre of the mound, such as the side, the hope would he that the new angle confuses the batsmen.
    4. Try to bowl as wide as you can whilst still bowling a legal delivery; this is much less effective in limited overs cricket (such as T20 and ODI) because the bowlers tolerance for what is a legal delivery is greatly reduced, with anything on the batsman's leg side being an automatic wide. The analogy here would be to try to through a strike at the very edge of the zone, rather than in middle.
    Each of these tactics countered by batsmen in a variety of ways as well.

    Baseball is a softball compared to cricket, The Ball does not pitch the grounds so it makes baseball easier to play, The ball speed of cricket is faster with cuts and swings. Yes, there are limitations to baseball runs so as another sport. But please mark my words if the ball hits you it could make serious damage sometimes fractures and death. The baseball bat swing is similarly based on set technique and timing but in cricket, you need techniques to play different ball lengths along with strength. and as a bowler, you must watch the batsman footwork and stance, that will help the batsman to stop making run or hitting the ball (4's or 6's). Both games are great but technically if you try out a cricket batsman with a baseball batsman you will realize cricket batsman will have an edge over the baseball batsman in terms of stikes which does mean that cricket batsman can hit frequent homerun compared to baseball ball batsman.
    Confusing but LOL some interesting facts, I would like to share, as I play both games but after all, everyone have its own opinion

    in cricket, as a bowler, you can't really bowl to avoid the batsman. If you bowl it too wide of the batsman, the umpire calls it a "wide", and the batting side gets an extra 1 run, and an EXTRA ball has to be bowled in the over. so if you continually bowl wide, the other team gets 1 run, and you have to bowl another ball, ad infinitum. so the only tactic as a bowler, is to bowl well, or bowl a "yorker". (which is a fast ball bowled at the batsman's feet and is therefore difficult to get any power on it). the bowler probably tried in that clip to bowl a few yorkers, but buggered it up and ended up being full tosses, which is the easiest type of ball to hit in cricket.

    Some really valid points when comparing these 2 sports - But what is an illegal pitch in baseball when it's targetted towards the body of the striker while in cricket a striker (batter) can be hit on his head/body and it's perfectly legal.. you can basically Target the body every single time and it's still legal.

    Ok the additional thing in cricket compared to baseball are the 'Overs'
    An Over has 6 balls - and the bowler / pitcher needs to complete a full over (6 balls) and only then the bowler is changed.
    So for the 3 forms of cricket:
    An ODI has 50 overs a side
    A T20 has 20 overs a side
    And a Test match - unlimited overs and both sides play 2 innings each, and the match can go on for a maximum of 5 days

    I like what you guys are doing - we're all sports fans here (I miss sports!). Cricket isn't 'baseball with brains', it's 'baseball with more variables' (and less ads). A match can last five days, with each player getting two 'at-bats' at most; a 'pitcher' and defensive team has to deal with the fact that 'foul-balls' are legitimate and adjust accordingly. I have no doubt that top-tier baseball players would make outstanding cricketers, and vice-versa - the skill-sets are the same. The difference between them is the difference between a battle, and a war. Since the pitch is a factor (with different bounce and pace, and changing in quality over the course of a match) cricket has a much more macro/strategic aspect - and that's not to mention the used ball changing with use (cricket ball being much much harder - might as well be made of concrete when it hits you). Fatigue and depth comes into play more often - you could liken it to the difference between a one-off B-ball game compared to a playoff series.

    I'd like to see Chris Gayle try baseball, he's got the build and his style of hitting straight down the ground in the V could carry over.
    Your strategy when a guy is batting like that is to let him get a 1 then try to keep his batting partner on strike, if you can get him to be there for 10-15 minutes without facing much he may lose it and play a bad shot.

  • @mediocrefunkybeat

    Generally speaking, a ball that doesn't bounce on the pitch is easier to hit than one that does and if it reaches the batter on the full, it's called a 'full-toss'. If it doesn't bounce and is above the batter's waist then it is an illegal ball (no-ball).

  • @brettrandell6507
    @brettrandell6507 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You have to go at the guy. The first ball you saw was called a wide. That means that the ball wasn't bowled where the batter could hit it, so the batting team was awarded 1 run, and the bowler had to bowl the ball again. A bowler had to bowl 6 balls in an over, so if you've been hit for 4 sixes in 4 balls, you've still got 2 balls to figure out how you're not going to go for any more runs!

    Great analysis guys. I actually played pro cricket too. I played against Gayle once, but fortunately for our side we got him out early.
    baseball and cricket are 2 very different sports. However, the fact that we have 360 degress to play with makes a huge huge difference. There also 9 fielders on the field. And they have to cover 360 degrees not 150 degrees (I might be wrong there), another advantage.
    The point about momentum makes a massive difference too. A Batter who is in the zone like Gayle here can keep pumping everything out the ground because he is in such great rhythm, unlike the stop start nature to baseball. In terms of field size I dont really know how big the baseball stadiums are, but I certainly would not compare hitting a 6 to a homerun. A homerun seems alot harder. In some games, over 120 balls or pitches, we could have 20 sixes. I doubt you would get the same statistic in baeball with pitches to homeruns.
    Bowling is interesting. There are ways to vary things up. You could just to slow the pitch down with some sort of cutter, you could vary the length, so either go for the head or go for the toes. Generally the yorker, where the ball pitches right next to the batsmens toes is regarded the best place to bowl when someone is smashing you out the park. However, it is hard to get that point accuracy right. And if you miss the "hole" by a tiny bit, the ball is in a perfect place for the batsmen to hit out the park again. In this example I didnt see them vary much on the line of the delivery. So your line could be towards the stumps, or wider away from the body. I have been to this ground a few times in Melbourne and the side lengths are very very small. So people tend not to like pushing the line fo the delivery too wide.
    From my experience, cricket batters tend to pick up baseball hitting easier than the other way around. I used to go to the cages a bit in Melbourne for fun. I personally was terrible but alot of my friends hit it alright. But pro baseballers would still be miles ahead. In terms of the bat, The surface area of a cricket bat is so much bigger. And again, you can get runs even if you mishit the ball. Baseball in my experience you have to hit the sweet spot to get any results. If you are off your mark by a little bit the ball hardly travels anywhere.
    2 Very different sports. I havent watched baseball much but the variations IMO are much more intricate. As the pitch ends up in a small box hitting area, that means the pitcher has to be so skilled to get variations right. Cricket, apart from down the wrong side (leg side), there are more variations possible, but hitting it for the batsmen is easier. Also in a team 5 people must bowl. I dont know how pitching works in baseball, but it seems a team can rely on 2/3 pitches who are top at their game. Cricket there is always at least 1-2 weak bowlers in a team who could get smashed. The game has changed alot in the last 15 years. And people want to see sixes and runs. Bowlers because of that have had it hard.

      You make a lot of good points, a lot. You obviously have some experience in baseball. I appreciate that. I don’t know how easier one sport is to pick up if your a pro of the other but I don’t know if you can claim that baseball would be easier to bat in. As you mentioned there is a difference in hitting a ball and hitting it in fair territory. The field of play is much smaller and there are lots of fielders, like you said, so to hit it in a spot no one is, is very difficult. Fielding in cricket would be hands down harder. More area to cover. A batter can be up there for hours. In baseball the hitter only gets so many chances. On average about 4-5 pitchers are used by a team in baseball so that isn’t much different. The roster is 26 players and half are pitchers.

    Baseball hitters have an advantage over cricket batters in that every ball is a full toss, which is the easiest ball to hit in cricket. When the ball is bounced on the ground, a cricket batter has to judge the height, length and speed of the ball and figure out twenty different ways it is to be played. Whereas in baseball pretty much every shot is a pull shot which takes a lot of brain work out of it, see ball hit ball. But cricket batter has to figure out after the ball bounces whether to play a drive, glance, cut, pull, etc. etc. etc.

    You have to bowl in a zone. The zone is quite tight on the batters leg side and a bit wider on the batting side. Also you can't bounce or bowl it above the shoulders. If you do bowl outside the zone it is a wide, the batting side gets a run and bowler has to re-bowl the ball. This happened with the first ball of the video, as the ball was bowled too wide down the leg side .... the batting side got 1 run and the ball didn't count in the 12 ball total of his 50. When the bowler starts the over they have to bowl the whole over which is 6 valid balls.

    In cricket you need to play according to the pitch, the bowler, the ball, the field placement, the target, number of remaining wickets and context of the current game etc etc..the list goes on. It's not just about power hitting that causes greater chance of getting out! You will gradually understand.

    Trying to get a batsman out or minimise the risk of their attack, who's in good form, especially someone like Chris Gayle is difficult. Ways of countering this amongst other, is to have a bowler in your attack with a deeper bag of tricks than your regular guys. A bowler that can try and read the batsman. Try and pick up on his strong points... where he likes to hit... leg or off side. Have an array of deliveries in his arsenal when bowling. The slower ball is still one of the best tactics in cricket, but still quite underrated and under used. Then there's also field placing on the side of the captain and bowler. One way of messing with a batsman head is to move the field regularly. This has batsman thinking/guessing as to what his opponent is plotting. When in fact your doing nothing basically. A little reverse psychology. So cricket is a great game of fun stats, but more so wit. Hence the purest form is test cricket. Which the best are ultimately judged by.

  • @darrenwilson8042
    @darrenwilson8042 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Put simply you have to bowl at the wicket - if you go too wide its given as a wide - i.e. a run is scored regardless and the delivery has to be bowled again so a standard 6 ball over can be say 8 balls long if 2 wides are bowled. That gives more opportunities to score runs particularly in limited overs cricket. Also in T-Twenty or ODI cricket like the Big Bash a wide gives you a free hit which means that you cannot be caught or bowled out - any dismissal is void for that delivery hence the batsman can go after the delivery.
    Finally - in terms of changing bowlers ( or pitchers ) the eleven man squad is made up of specialists so a team will have bowlers, batsmen and a wicket keeper ( catcher ) - depending on the weather and type of pitch bowlers will vary between fast and/or spin bowlers. They tend to bowl in spells of say 4 to 6 overs because in the baking hot sun any more is impossible. There's no point in changing over after over as the captain is looking for a bowler to get into a groove - I am sure you have/will see videos where bowlers destroy teams in a few overs when they get into a rhythm then just like it was with Gayles awesome batting a bowler can instil fear in a team and cause a batting collapse.

    although there is the advantage of hitting it anywhere, the bowling has much more variation which makes it pretty hard as well, but both sports have their own individual nuance, also the actual surface of the pitch makes a difference, depending on how it is curated a pitch can be more helpful for bowling or batting. also technically you can get around a batsman but that would be very hard to do, but yes there are certain strategies that can be used but they do not have a very high chance of working for an extended period of time and is tricky to execute.

    Cricket and Baseball are wildly different I get it from point of reference for new comers but that's it (I like both sports).
    This clip is from a T20 comp which is hit & giggle to purists with conditions usually wildly in favour of the batsmen ie friendly batting surfaces (wickets), it's tougher in Test cricket when wickets can have lethal bounce conducive to fast bowling &/or dusty spinning surfaces for slow bowling.. in those circumstances it can be hard for a Batter to get it off the square as we say (tough to score).

      You’re not totally wrong. You definitely need hand eye coordination in hitting baseballs. You need timing. These balls come in at 90 mph and faster and have spin. Strength always helps. This is why so many guys were doing steroids in the 80s and 90s. It gave them an advantage but it is not a necessity. It helps with homeruns. We’ve had several small guys win MVPs in the sport.

    hitting the ball to the right or to the left is not a reflex shot , as the flat side of the bat needs special maneuvering to hit shots in all directions of the cricket ground and with placements to bypass fielders for a 4 run for example . so i believe handling a cricket bat is not comparable to base ball bat .the real test would be a cricketer using a baseball bat and a baseball player using a cricket bat to test each others batting as a reversed roll .

  • @karanz151
    @karanz151 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't follow baseball at all. I'm a die hard cricket fan, however I don't believe any game is without brains. Any game that exists, only exists because a lot of brains have been put into it for it to become a game and hence people love it. Sure there are lot of things that we as commoners feel should be changed in any game but that doesn't mean the game is any less significant. This goes for cricket too. The game of cricket is flawed too in such a way that it usually gives batsman or the batting team more benefits and any rules that have changed over the years, most of them have benefited the batting team, while only some to the fielding team. And any cricket fan will agree to this.
    Now coming to the video, I believe you probably understand just the basics of cricket, probably only the superficial of basics.
    So just a few explanations... in cricket, it is mandatory to bounce the ball before it reaches the batsman/striker. If you directly bowl at batsman without bouncing the ball, it is still okay if it reaches the batsman below waist height. An example of this is at 7:00 in this video.
    However, if the bowler bowls directly at a batsman and if it is above waist height, then that is considered a no ball and a free hit. So a no ball means the batting team will get the runs whatever they score off that ball but the bowling team will have to bowl an extra ball. The free hit is a newer rule that has been around probably for last 10-15 years only. Free hit is awarded to the batting team as a punishment to the bowler bowling directly at the batsman and above waist height. So the delivery that follows example at 10:18, when the bowler bowled a no ball, it went for six. So the batting team gets 6 runs + 1 run for the no ball + free hit the following ball. On a free hit ball, the batsman can just go for it without worrying about the consequence of where the ball will land because in a free hit ball, the batsman cannot get out. The only way to get a batsman out in a free hit ball is via run out.
    So where the challenge lies in cricket is when the ball bounces. Now a bowler is either a fast bowler or a spin bowler. If he is a fast bowler, he can decide to bowl straight which means once the bowl bounces, it will keep going straight without deviation.
    Then there are swing fast bowlers, who can bowl in such a way that it deviates in the air whether towards or away from the batsman in order to create confusion.
    Then there are seam fast bowlers, who can bowl in such a way that the direction of the ball is straight until it bounces but can deviate and change direction after the bounce. Swing and seam bowling is not for everyone and not everyone can do it, only a handful of bowlers are able to do that.
    Fast bowlers can be tricky and pretend to ball fast but actually end up bowling slow.
    Also, the way you hold a ball while balling also matters because that determines the type of bounce you'll get. And obviously the batsman is unable to see how the ball is being held by the bowler.
    For fast bowlers, average speed that they bowl at is 80-90 mph. However, there are bowlers who have bowled faster than that with the highest speed recorded of Shoib Akhtar who bowled at 100.2 mph
    Spin bowling on the other hand, is slower balls at 40-60 mph and the bowlers can spin it either toward you or away from you after it bounces. But this is a story for another day
    No. of legal balls per over = 6. If there is any wide ball (a ball that goes on the opposite side of the batsman's stance so the first ball of this video is an example of that) or no ball then there is an extra ball included for each wide or no ball.
    Every over can only be bowled by 1 bowler. So he has to complete his 6 legal deliveries before it can be passed on to someone else.
    Because this is a limited overs cricket (where each side only gets 20 over = 20 x6 = 120 legal balls), each bowler can only bowl a maximum of 4 overs. So even if one bowler is successful in the day, he can only bowl 4x6 = 24 legal deliveries in total.
    A bowler cannot bowl 2 consecutive overs.
    So, usually what happens is in the initial overs a fast bowler balls (overs 1-6) due to field restrictions (again a story for another day), then between overs 7-16 spinners or medium-fast bowlers and then in the death overs 16-20 fast bowlers again. This is based on a basic strategy and in no way is followed in every game and it completely depends on the captain of the team how he chooses to divide up the overs between his bowlers based on whether they are ahead or behind in the game.
    So, all of this probably summaries may 1-2% of the rules/strategies of cricket.
    Hope this helps, any questions, please feel free to leave a comment.

    Chucking is not allowed in cricket, you can't bend your elbow more than 15 degree. So you have to bowl/pitch with straight arm. Keeping that in mind bowlers bowling over 90miles an hour is commendable. Nothing taking away from baseball. In baseball you can track the trajectory easily because ball doesn't bounce. On the other hand a baseball bat is round and hitting area is less which makes it hard to connect. It's more of a power and connect game in baseball but in cricket you have to play with your brain. You can't swing around and get ways in cricket.
    Both games are awesome and we should respect both the games.
    It's the pitch(playing area at the centre) which makes cricket more interesting. Pitch with grass on it makes it bowler friendly because they will get extra bounce out of it. If grass is shaved off from pitch, bounce becomes even and it's easier to track trajectory which makes batting easy.
    So yes it's more of a brain game in cricket compared to baseball.

    Chris Gayle has probably been the best player over the last 10 years at hitting sixes and you are right that it is very difficult to bowl to a batsman when they are hitting the ball as well as Gayle is here. There are a couple of strategies that the bowlers could try.
    There is a type of ball called a 'yorker' which is a ball that bounces at the batsman's toes which makes hit hard for the batsman to get under the ball and hit for six, most of the time bowlers will bowl yorkers at the stumps and if the batsman misses he will likely be out but sometimes bowlers will bowl a wide yorker which would be hard for the batsman to reach but unlikely to take a wicket. 12:50 is an example of a yorker on this video. Lasith Malinga from Sri Lanka has been the best at bowling yorkers for a long time, this is a video of him th-cam.com/video/SZWsLWW5tnY/w-d-xo.html
    Bowlers will also bowl variations to try and out smart the batsman, fast bowlers will vary their pace to try and deceive the batsmen, fast bowlers are usually 80-90mph and they may drop down to around 70mph for slower balls. Spin bowlers will bowl balls that spin, balls that don't spin and some spinners can bowl balls that spin the opposite direction to the way they usually spin the ball. Bowlers may also change which side of the stumps they bowl from or bowl from different points along the crease to change the angle to the batsmen.
    Teams may also try and keep the in from batsman away from the strike which may upset his rhythm.
    In cricket both ends of the pitch are bowled from, 6 balls (1 over) from one side and then they switch and bowl 6 balls from the other side. You are not allowed to change the bowler half way through an over unless the bowler is unable to complete the over because of injury. Bowlers are not allowed to bowl consecutive overs.
