That was Donna Jean Godchaux, vocalist and wife of the keyboardist. She also sang at Muscle Shoals. She sang background on When a Man Loves a Woman by Percy Sledge in 1966 and Suspicious Minds by Elvis in 1969. She sang behind Boz Scaggs, Duane Allman, Neil Diamond, and Cher, among others.
Betty Cantor-Jackson did the audio mix for the GD during this period. They Dead were so ahead of the curve with women in charge of recorded sound and lighting (Candace Brightman) I saw Betty and Rhony Stanley (Owsley's ex) up in Napa tonight for Melvin Seals. I was watching all the young and old singing songs they learned from the live tapes made by the woman sitting in the corner, Betty. And Bro, do some Cornell 77. The Estimated Prophet, Dancing in the Streets and set two!
one unique thing about GD is that the live music was being mixed in real time with an amazing soundboad and crew, always located about 30 feet from the stage in the audience. For real
I’m enjoying this reaction, sitting here smoking a nice bowl, and I literally started laughing out loud when the camera settled on Donna and you yelled out “who she?” The way you said at that moment was just so effing funny. 😂
November 1977 was the first time I saw the Dead--Seneca College Field House. I was 19 (relatively late in discovering them). This album was fairly new and they played a lot from it. This song was the encore.
Can’t get enough live Dead. I saw them play all over the the Midwest from ‘76-‘95, and loved the ‘77-‘78 Era! Jam on with Jerry & the boys & Donna.✌️❤️🎶
This performance was an early one for "Terrapin", only the seventh public outing for he tune, per Dead Base, which is quite apparent judging from Jerry's enthusiasm while playing. This became one of the big, major songs for Heads at shows, and the lighting developed over the years, Thank You Candace, until at the end in 1995, it became a signature tune for Jerry and the band.
You nailed it with your assessment at the end man! The band was searching for the sound just as much we, the listeners ⚡ there are so many hidden gems within a song
Jerry is the lead guitarist, Bob is the rhythm guitarist That said, they developed an intertwined style where they each play lead and rhythm off what each other is doing Jerry leaves spaces for Bob to play his licks Bob might be the only rhythm guitarist alive to play lead guitar lines utilizing chords
Your love for the Dead is obvious but catching a show is the best way to experience them. Dark Star Orchestra is the closest tribute band in my opinion to capture the experience. They tour frequently, I recommend you catch a show.
I was at this show too - seen the Dead 100s of times (and their side gigs probably more) 71-82. Terrapin was a strange experience at first, but it was all Hunter - who brought it through. Capitol was a great venue - perfect size but John Scher was NO Bill Graham - John ran a strict house
Bob and Jerry would trade of song for song all night, If Bob opened Jerry closed and vice versa. Usually. Sometimes Phil or Brent get in the mix. All depends on what era. One of the reason the Dead have two drummers is because it take two to keep a beat. Usually drum and bass. This allowed Phil to get more creative with the bass.
Phil sings Bob sings Jerry sings and Brent sings. Even though Phil rarely sings he does. Brent sang quite a bit. Even the drummer, Mickey Hart sings a little bit with his own band. He never sang with the Grateful Dead though.
If you like bass guitar, at Dead concerts one could stand in the "Phil Zone" where the bass would rattle dem bones, it was sooo intense people would actually phase shift from dimension to dimension, flickering in and out of existence. Favorite Dead years: 1969, 1972,1973 1974, 1977, 78, 79, and 1989 for the vibe.
nice... Terrapin was always fun and they played it all the time - here is something just a bit "deeper" and dare I say DARKER.... this is "Lazy Lightnin' > Supplication" - from 1983 - there are no pictures to this video (none needed for those in the know) - the tune was developed when smack made it's way into our scene in the late 70's and they played this thru the mid 1980's and the last portion; the "Supplication" was played every now and again right up till Jerry passed away - (Bobby visits Supplication every now and then still) I saw it for the last time in Albany, NY in 1995 when they flirted with the melody for the last time - I saw some special nights when they would play this near the end of the 1st set and they would pair it with the tune "Deal" - so, in essence they would play Lazy lightning, Supplication, Deal /-/ spelling out L-S-D in the set list * yeah... Lazy Lightning, ya really get me HIGH - (yes, I was dosed at many of the shows I saw) since this video has no visuals I have added the words for you and keep in mind the scene at the time... this drug was moving from the very fringe of our scene into our psychedelic serenity - it destroyed a lot of good people but it was commentary (via song) on what they were seeing/experiencing all around them... here is a nice version for you to listen to LISTEN TO THIS ONE AS LOUD AS YOU CAN (trust) th-cam.com/video/SSodRCilRJE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8_OAVBH4XqLPXyn- Lazy Lightning (words by Barlow) Lazy lightnin' sleepy fire in your eyes it's like desire in disguise I keep on tryin' but I, I can't get through Lazy lightnin' I'd like to find the proper potion That's gonna capture your emotion You're right beside me but I, I can't get through You're a loop of lazy lightnin', just a loop of lazy lightnin' Must admit you're kinda frightnin' but you really get me high So exciting, when I hear your velvet thunder, You seem so near I start to wonder Would you come closer if, if I asked you to? Anyone know the story about the orchestration on the studio version ? I read recently that apparently the band was upset about some studio guys adding that on.
Bobby was constantly in the groove and lost at the same time, Jerry’s recreational substance choice was very evident back in this era, it was a shame it changed in the 80’s
Drummers!!! Bill Kreutzmann and Micky Hart are the percussionists. The bass player and keyboard player also sing. They take turns. "Cosmic Charlie". ✌️
Most I've fed the Dead to had previously just listened to their studio recordings of 4 or 5 songs played regularly on the radio. They are cookie cutter, for the record companies. Jerry made that very clear. It's not that they did not try to put out quality studio albums. The Dead were a live band, first and foremost. And they tailored their playing to the live audiences ... so we could get down and get funky.
🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 Really like to see you reacting to someone new for you Try "Ry Cooder" Live studio Song is 🎶prodigal son 🎵🎸🥁🎷 You gonna adore this song my friend Keep the good work Biz 👏 🙌 👍 👌 💪🏻 ✨️
My thoughts. Studio equals cookie cutter perfection. I find that boring. Live is raw warts and all and can give you extreme highs I can't get from studio recordings. Therefore I prefer live. Another note- have always thought Terrapin to be the ultimate concert song. Again, that's just me. Great thing about music is what it does for the individual.
77 offers a lot of 🔥 ,but terrapin is serious business 🤓❤….this ain’t in the in mix (ehh) 😁..even the studio version better than this hot mess! Terrapin is a major grateful food group for folks on a dead diet ( newer wolf bros w/ horns and strings for a later dive Tho!❤❤❤amazing work my friend 🫡✌️❤️
I can't say I love this more than say Euro 72 , but.... Blues for Allah , then this. not rock. not blue. Jazz ? G.D. music and who cares what it's 'labeled ' ? I near always prefer Live. be it even Diana Krall Paris or Opera ( try. ' La traviatta' with Anna Netrebko , blue ray has the captions - or just a 4 min U.t. selection , Netrebko. doing. 'Meine Lippen... ). or. broadway , the 10 th. Anniv of Les Miz'. essential listening and SOOOO great. Live is where it's at.
Terrapin is 2 months old here Terrapin made its debut 2/26/77

I remember the 1st time I heard this. I was in high school 1978, and extremely high😅....the 70s, best music era ever!
Spring '77 tour was nothing but magic. Enjoy.
Music appreciation is a journey and we don't all have to be at the same point.
Saw them for the first time at the Providence RI stop on this tour.
The Dead is a band that takes some time and patience to understand and appreciate. They are beautiful musicians. Cheers bro.
Inspiration…move me brightly!
This was one of the greatest songs I saw live …love it Biz, thanks! Please keep “feeding The Dead”

Jerrys guitar tone IS beautiful.
You totally get it - there is so much going on, and the more you listen, the more you can get from it. It’s worth the effort, as you have discovered.
one unique thing about GD is that the live music was being mixed in real time with an amazing soundboad and crew, always located about 30 feet from the stage in the audience. For real
Been mellowing out to this for decades. Originally had this on 8-track. 😂
Thanks biz It is a vibe.
I’m enjoying this reaction, sitting here smoking a nice bowl, and I literally started laughing out loud when the camera settled on Donna and you yelled out “who she?” The way you said at that moment was just so effing funny. 😂

"The drummer" theres two HAHA lol they're great
I'm seeing Double 🍄🌁🌁🌁🍄
My all time favorite song, I get chills and tears every single time I hear it.
Robert Hunter called it his Baby 🍄🌁🌁🌁🍄
DONNA Jean GODCHAUX Joined the band in 72' till early 79' with her husband/Keith
Phil's bass playing is out of this world. He still plays with his Terrapin band in California and NY.
AKA as "Being in the Phil Zone"
Phil Lesh drops nukes on bass.
Bass Great! Lesh Phillin"
Rip Phil
Man, he has the best Dead reactions on TH-cam, period.
The Travis Bean!
You nailed it with your assessment at the end man! The band was searching for the sound just as much we, the listeners ⚡ there are so many hidden gems within a song
RIP Phil Bomb

I'm impressed that they could do it live. But the studio recording is a masterpiece.
Your love for the Dead is obvious but catching a show is the best way to experience them. Dark Star Orchestra is the closest tribute band in my opinion to capture the experience. They tour frequently, I recommend you catch a show.
The Dead will live!
Robert Hunter said that terrapin was his Baby 🍄🌁🌁🌁🍄

This is the only song of the Dead that I prefer the studio version. It is their most prog rock song.
Hopefully he had the SHLYRICS out for this one. Great “lyrics”
Phil sings Bob sings Jerry sings and Brent sings. Even though Phil rarely sings he does. Brent sang quite a bit. Even the drummer, Mickey Hart sings a little bit with his own band. He never sang with the Grateful Dead though.
DONNA JEAN!!!!! 5.9.77 "Sunrise". Donna perfection. There is no other. Shout out to Buffalo '77!!!!
Love you brother!!!!💙⚡️❤️
Got to listen to the album version. There are some 25 min live versions. Saw this tour, 4.5 hour concert
I always describe this song as Prog Dead. It's a masterpiece. This wasn't the whole song. Give a listen to the studio version too.
If you like bass guitar, at Dead concerts one could stand in the "Phil Zone" where the bass would rattle dem bones, it was sooo intense people would actually phase shift from dimension to dimension, flickering in and out of existence. Lazy Lightning (words by Barlow)
Lazy lightnin' sleepy fire in your eyes it's like desire in disguise
I keep on tryin' but I, I can't get through
Lazy lightnin' I'd like to find the proper potion
That's gonna capture your emotion
You're right beside me but I, I can't get through
You're a loop of lazy lightnin', just a loop of lazy lightnin'
Must admit you're kinda frightnin' but you really get me high
So exciting, when I hear your velvet thunder,
You seem so near I start to wonder
Would you come closer if, if I asked you to?
So inviting, the way you're messing with my reason
It's an exception but it's pleasing
Tell me a lie and I will swear, I'll swear it's true.
You're a loop of lazy lightnin' (Lazy lightnin')
Just a loop of lazy lightnin' (Lazy lightnin')
Must admit you're kinda frightening
Just a loop of lazy lightnin'
Put the fire in my eyes (Lightnin') Put the fire every time (Lightnin')
Put the fire in my heart (Lightnin') Well come on lazy lightning.
Just a loop of lazy lightning
Misty lightning, well you always electrify me
Someday I know you'll satisfy me
And all that lightnin' will be my lightnin' too.
My lightnin' too. (My lightnin' too)
Just a loop of lazy lightnin' (My lightnin' too)
My lightnin' too. (My lightnin' too)
Just a loop of lazy lightnin' (My lightnin' too)
My lightnin' too. (My lightnin' too)
Oh come on lazy lightnin' (My lightnin' too)
Supplication (words by Weir)
Well, dizzy ain't the word for the way that you're making me feel now
Well, I need some indication, girl, if all of this is real now, tell me girl now
Well, I've heard it said there's something wrong in my head, now
Got to help me, girl, now
Could it be infatuation or am I just being misled now?
Little bolt of inspiration way you strike me now
Sparking my imagination, got the lightning now
Cause me such excitation, got the lightning now
'bout to end my suffocation, come on strike me now
Little bolt of inspiration way you strike me now, she's back in my imagination
GOATS!!!
Terripen isn't just a song it's a ride
Epic
Lesh is more! 🐢✌💙

Anyone know the story about the orchestration on the studio version ? I read recently that apparently the band was upset about some studio guys adding that on.
Dead shows were symphonies…. I saw Terrapin numerous times in early 90’s….hard to name a favorite live song, but this and Wharf Rat are up there
I have the studio album. The first Dead album I bought. The studio version is long too. This song takes up all of side 2.
i think you meant "drumers". there are two of them. :-)
His job is to shed light, not to master
TS live is great but the LP version is my favorite.
Keep on truckin' 👍 I like your channel
ya gotta feed the Dead
Bobby was constantly in the groove and lost at the same time, Jerry’s recreational substance choice was very evident back in this era, it was a shame it changed in the 80’s
GOTTA DO SOMETHING FROM THE Jerry Garcia Band AT SHORELINE AMPHITHEATER!! PLEASE DO THE SONG ---DON’T LET GO---sorry about the yelling 😂
Drummers!!! Bill Kreutzmann and Micky Hart are the percussionists.
The bass player and keyboard player also sing. They take turns.
"Cosmic Charlie". ✌️

You gotta love pretty much everything from the 70s, minus Bobby on the slide guitar.

just my opinion... Donna Jean had her good moments, but her, a'hem, "contributions" have ruined sooooo many otherwise killer live songs for me.
