      @KINGSHITTHROAT 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's not a minor point though. They may not have gotten him if they drafted Melo and no Sheed, there's no ring.

    • @akshaysundru482
      @akshaysundru482 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@KINGSHITTHROAT No they would've got him still. Darko still won a ring with the Pistons, he wasn't traded for Sheed. Also Dumars wanted Sheed to fill a positional role lacking, one that Darko should've filled but wasn't. Melo had a different role to what Sheed filled for the Pistons.
      The Blazers were literally selling every player they had to start fresh, their talent simply wasn't good enough anymore to overlook their terrible reputation (Jail Blazers era). They traded him to Atlanta for basically nothing, and then Dumars did a three team with Ainge and Atlanta for Lindsey Hunter, Chucky Atkins and Bob Sura Zeljko Rebraca and two future first round picks. They filled a positional need and they created cap space in one move, so they'd likely still do it.

    • @elliemyers6435
      @elliemyers6435 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @mrslywwilliams313
      @mrslywwilliams313 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KINGSHITTHROAT not true. Joe DUMMars failed Carmelo Anthony. That trade for Rasheed Wallace came mid-season just before the deadline and had absolutely nothing to do with the second pick in the 2003 draft. Pistons still had plenty of bigs to support Rasheed Wallace and Tayshaun Prince. They had Corliss Williamson, Darvin Ham just to name a few. The deal for Rasheed Wallace was a four player trade to the Atlanta Hawks which were Bob Sura, Zeljko Rebraca, Chucky Atkins, and Lindsey Hunter. Then the Pistons' waived Lindsey Hunter then picked him up on injury reserve making it a three player trade deal instead.

      Apart from what others have said, I’d add that you’re looking at this with 20/20 hindsight bias.
      We know now, obviously, that Detroit beat the lakers. But nobody knew that back in 2003-2004. Remember, this is when Kobe and Shaq was joined by the glove and the mailman. People expected them to win it all, not the Detroit Pistons.
      So if Detroit (the underdogs) beat the lakers after drafting Carmelo, the whole story would be different. It might very well still be known as a defensive juggernaut team, but part of the spotlight will inevitably go to Carmelo for his offensive prowess.
