McTomenay, Bruno, Mainoo and now even Casemiro all go up leaving a big gap in the middle. Casemiro is no longer a CDM he doesn't have the legs so goes up to pretend he is offering something. Ten hag was at fault because we can all see it and he had Collyer who has done well in pre-season. Bringing him on for Casemiro would have dramatically improved the legs and speed in that midfield, instead he brings McTomenay who's first instinct is to run to the opposite box. This manager is not learning from last season at all. All he talks about is attacking transition, United are poor in the defensive transition. Too many players who can't cover ground quickly and that man doesn't seem to get it
What’s good is that McTominay being sold opens the door for Collyer to break through. Mainoo really needs to be managed better because he looks burnt out.
Liverpool fan This is a great video. Didn't watch the game but from your analysis, I could tell why the game ended as it did. Please more of these type of videos
Honestly, I thought we played well. it's just silly mistakes and really bad decisions in the final third. Amad was awful in the 1st half. Bruno looks rushed everytime on the ball. He needs to calm down a bit. Rashford... I don't know what to say. couldn't beat his defender when he dribbled and made so many negative passes and holds on to the ball. Just shitty performance from the final third honestly. Maguire needs to deal with crosses better
the root problem actually is the midfield again. And is the exact same issue last season(Casemiro and Mainoo isolated far too often when United without the ball)
I think the frustration lies in having someone like De Ligt fit and ready to go and still persisting with Maguire. We just know De Ligt would have dealt with that ball into the box meaning no first goal for Brighton. I agree it’s better than last season you can see from the stats but ETH cannot continue to make these rookie errors 3 years into his tenure. Additionally, the subs and taking Bruno and Amad? We had 0 creativity towards the end of the game and he can’t keep making mistakes like that.
Man Utd made numerous mistakes during the course of the game and the lack of physicality in the midfield was highlighted as a weakness exploited during the latter stages of the game, However, Bruno and Mainoo are still struggling with match sharpness due to their lack of preseason involvement. Bruno and Mainoo in particular were going to struggle as the game went on. Zirkzee who was subbed on was also struggling with sharpness, Martinez had no preseason either. Maguire is only starting because De Ligt is not up to speed yet fitness-wise. Likewise Dalot and Mazraoui (Mazraoui had only 50 mins of preseason action before signing for United). Then there is Garnacho who is also struggling with sharpness. Making excuses isn't my intention but our football this season is quite demanding with the pressing and judging by key players not fully fit yet, we were always going to struggle. These signs were also noticeable against Fulham despite being the better side but not surprising these vulnerabilities were exploited by Brighton. We were unlucky to lose the game to Brighton and I expect us to be much better as the season progresses with players hitting the sharpness levels required. Although two players have me worried despite their involvement in the preseason - Rashford and Casemiro. I won't chastise Rashford but question his decision making which hinders the attack. Regarding Casemiro, there is nothing left to say about him, his legs are gone and ideally, should have been sold if the Saudi interest didn't cool off. Hopefully, some additions are made before the end of the window, especially in midfield.
Good analysis. First, Erik needs to field the players who have joined this transfer window. That means De Ligt for Mguire. That allows you to play high and keeps the midfield compact. In midfield Ugate for Casimero. Up front Zirkzee, Garnacho and Amad. Bruno needs to learn to stay in position because he runs everywhere he shouldn't be. Third, Ten Hag needs to stop feeling sorry for players.
If you look at casemiros first season with united his positional discipline was so much better than it has been last year and so far this season. The same reason amrabat looked so good those last 5 games was he stayed in his position in the team shape and was making good decisions with the ball but also protected our backline very well. Once we can move that backline forward and compact the field we will be very hard to break down.
I disagree with your 2nd and 3rd points. The issue around mainoo being outwide was not so much the people he was linking with, there was many times we played out of the rondos, because brightons press wasnt that aggressive a lot of the game, and ppl like rashford and mount actually had to do a bit of individual brilliance to keep it. The issue isnt his link up partners, the issue is the progression intent. We should be progressing it more centrally, allowing mainoo options to link and carry, and allowing us options when attacking past brightons high line. The only potent attacks we had came from wide crosses back in, and these are the easiest attacks to defend. if we kept to more central progression, mainoo gets more space and players to operate off due to the lack fo a touchline and we produce more potent oppurtunities. Also in terms of mount hes not gonna hold up the ball, no, but hes key to winning the second balls in those situations and the press absolutely falls off a cliff when hes not involved. i dunno if when rasmus is back, we need to rotate the rw for bruno and play mount in the 10, but without mount, our press is basically pointless.
You shed light, same weakness with Mainoo against Fulham second half. Progression hits a halt and he slows down to begin buildup again from the defense. He also looks a bit knackered. Our progression of the ball needs to be sped up much faster and our defenders need to squeeze in a bit more attacking those central zones like you rightly mentioned.
I agree with all points made in the video, and they’re all valid but I think it’s overstating the actual effect the tactical flaws had on the game. Brighton were never really threatening, their first goal was a decent but fairly aimless cross that was defended awfully by Maguire, onana and Maz. Can be jotted down to a communication error and an unfamiliar backline teething maybe. The second goal was caused by Casemiro vacating the back post zone to go try start a counter and MDL not being match sharp enough to scan and notice the massive space. I really think Maguire, or MDL if he had more time to settle in notices the free men. Mctominay is a crutch that needs taking away so the team can heal, he was equally at fault for the goal as MDL but both were only in the position to fail in the first due to Casemiros decision making. He has to know his role and vacating the back post before ambling back towards the ball is inexcusable from someone of his experience. The less said about our wingers the better. Should have comfortably won if they had the disciple to stay onside and take the chances that came to them. I’m unconvinced the current system can ever work with our squad, Zirkzee is not a volume goal scorer, he’s been brought in to allow our wingers/bruno to thrive and to take advantage of the dynamic he brings you need a truly world class inside forward, a Son, Salah or Rashford of yesteryear. I think too much faith has been put in Rashford recapturing his form in front of goal, when the guy doesn’t even want to shoot this season and is going into his 9th prem season still completely incapable of keeping himself onside. Taking off Bruno if it was tactical choice was a particularly bizarre decision considering the game had just started to get exceptionally transitional, the game state he thrives in. You’re spot on about Mainoo being isolated, Brighton clued in from minute one that if he doesn’t have any passing lanes open to players who can actually control the ball in tight spaces that his body feints are exactly that, feints and allowed them to press him much more directly. He’s being asked to do things incredibly few cms are capable of and it’s unrealistic to expect a teeenager to give an 8/10 week in week out. Depth is desperately needed there too or the whole midfield dynamic needs changing if he dips in form or picks up a knock. Overall lots to be concerned with but the actual way we played today was quite satisfying and is light years ahead of what we saw last season
Fantastic post. Agree with it all. We are very reliant on wings for goals but whilst Rashford looks out of sorts (should have been sold and replaced imo), we do look like we have goals in us so am not concerned. Midfield looks a mess still from a defensive pov and general control of proceedings- and yes taking Maguire off didn’t help leadership wise. Midfield is where we need most of our investment.
We played in this manner against City, 1 win, 1 draw. So naturally, the fanbase started to have high hopes, high expectations. So a near miss against Fulham and a lose against Brighton feels disappointing. It's like the other managers have found out how to play against Ten hags 4222 like shape. Brighton were able to bypass MUFC press with clever passes from Steelman. Personally, I would like to see Zirkzee in starting 11 and also De Ligt. And a slight twist to game plan, during match time, to adjust. Have a plan B and C from the beginning. Ie. if Steelman keeps bypass our pressure, then adjust the gameplan.
Best analysis i have seen so far, there's a lack of explosiveness in utd midfield and second half the MF became tired which became more exposed when baleba came on which resulted in mainoo yellow card.utd struggle with ball carriers.utd don't have explosive ball carrying midfielders.
There’s a reason we finished 8th last season then the last season of Olé and Ralf. Even mid table clubs have more pace and power in the middle of the park than us. Arnold and Murtugh really screwed us all over signing Casimiro on the verge of decline for such a stupid amount of money and wages.
Mainoo is not match for you can just see it. Not surprised though and we’ve got a 60+ game season ahead of us. I’d be worried we haven’t got a Mainoo back up.
@@MrSmiley9849 he’s a teen. How can anyone say he is or isn’t a match with it being this early in buss career? He’s exhausted and should never have gone to the Euros with England. @@kwl189 Yes, I meant match fit. It’s not a knock on him as a player. Wow! Pythagoras is a ManUtd fan??? With your analytical and tactical knowledge I know its hurting you having to watch the Red Devils week in week out. Prays out to you brother!
I believe the people saying he should start this person or that, are speaking from a point of little perspective. We don’t know the player’s situation behind the scenes. If this was a result well into the season, then I’d be concerned. All is well for now 🙏
Which players are people speaking of? At the moment I don’t think anyone can question his lineup it’s just a shame he’s still having to start a Casemiro
@@ThePythagorasPerspective ive seen some fans demanding zirkzee starts, but I believe his fitness is not all there yet. Ten hag has stated that they not only want zirkzee to drop and play with the wingers, but to also find himself at the end of their attacking chances.
Interesting analysis Do you think that if we wanted to bring the most out of Maino we need to start sancho and mazroui on the left ? And do you think that ugatree will solve man united problem in cdm? And do you think that the cb partnership of deligt and lesandro will allow us to play higher line . Therefore , tightening the space in midfield and improve out press structure?
Sancho and Maz are more better for link up yes, although there won’t be penetration with that pairing so you gain one thing and lose another. Ugarte brings legs but is positionally chaotic so not ideal fix. De Ligt and Licha on paper should give United a higher line as will a fit Yoro.
that match proved ten hag's incompetence. He's the guy takes man united to the 4th place as the best possible scenario. He's not the guy to bring back the glory. Furthermore, i believe ineos are keeping him to use him as a scapegoat
I think Ugarte by default improves the midfield by being younger and hungry than Casemiro but I still think we will see positional error and lack of build up control
The pressing and play from back was great, that's the only positive I can take. They need to play like this the whole game and not revert to type. Utd dominated possession overall against a Brighton that is good in that exactly. Those are the only small positives I'll take, although small.
I love this channel but im unsure if Zirkzee for mount was the right decision. Perhaps we had more attacking chances but we lost the control we had in the first half, even though we went 1 nil down. Perhaps it was down to a tiring double pivot aswell though.
Good point but I think bringing in Zirkzee and also keeping a tiring Casemiro on, meant we were physically getting weaker from a defensive POV. Double whammy.
@@ThePythagorasPerspective Agreed. As you said in the video, we cannot keep the intensity in midfield and we lose our control of games regularly. If we had more athleticism in midfield from the start or in replacements for Mainoo and Casimiro, bringing Zirkzee on would give us a more dynamic attack without the loss of control.
Mainoo and Casemiro should not be playing more than 65mins as Casemiro is old and slow while Mainoo is not fast and has stamina issues as he is still young!
If united scored that second goal brighton would have been dowm and out united would have got even more chances on counterattack so we were even more unlucky
does any of our midfielders just want to sit in front of our centre backs. it seems mainoo and casemiro like to attack just as much as our attackers. the manager needs to tell both midfielders just to sit and dont move. we have 4 forwards, push 1 FB up and keep the rest back 325 essentially
Around the 14 minute, Rashford stood with both his hands on both knees, bent forward. This after a failed attack. That right there speaks of utter laziness or exhaustion from m him. How is it possible that he is already tired after 14 minutes? Harry Maguire lost the ball high up in attack. Instead of returning to his normal center back position, he stood there, totally out of position. Center Backs should never start a running attack. A long pass attack, yes! Also Ten Hag post match the Fulham game was ask, 'what areas do you think needs working on?" His response, "Everything was perfect!" How the hell? United, at home, barely beats Fulham scoring the winning goal in the 83 minute, I think. Either Ten Hag is incompetent or he is seriously struggling to express himself in the English language.
Gilmour iq wise and milner physically bullied maino till 65 mins . And then baleba came in and made maino twerk and expose baddddd . Maino is not a midfield who is athletic, pace or covers grounds . He's more of a press resistance cm who likes the space and calms down with the tempo . Rather ugarte man utd need a controller 6 who can sweep too to avoid maino getting exposed so much at 19 years of age .
Ten hang seems to forget Martinez maguire pairing has always completely failed.... Those two doest work for reasons I can't explain.... He shouldn't try that pairing against Liverpool or man u will b messed up
Unpopular opinion but Bruno is both a strength and weakness. The defense needed strengthening and now midfield. We ain't winning things for 2 more seasons.
@@ThePythagorasPerspective The midfield needs an overhaul. 2-3 players minimum, then there is wingers. This seems like a never ending loop at united. We are cursed
@@ThePythagorasPerspective amad had keys of this game. He missed two crucial passes that would have been goals for sure. One for bruno/rash (that he finally passed late waaay back of rash) and one for zirkze run, but chose not to pass at all. I just hope these guys are wake in post match video reviews and learn
We was the better team and felt we were very unlucky to loose especially when compared to how arsenal were lucky to get 3 points. 2 offside goals and amad missing a clear chance we paid the price for it in the end. missing rasmus and choosing not to start zirkzee is ruining our chances of finishing games early imo
nah united were worse. xg, shots on target, were all better. Last 25 minutes were just pure pressure from Brighton that led to the 2nd goal. United midfield was completely dominated by a 38 year old james milner and billy gilmour a 5'6 tiny midfielder.
@MonsterhunterFTWWTF I do agree that their was a period where Brighton were controlling the game but no team dominates the full 90 as for the shots on target and XG I feel the stats don't represent the game fully because offside goals count towards neither xg or shots on target
welbeck 34, milner 38, veltman 32, dunk 33, it amazes me how brighton outplayed united with very old players in their team. maybe tenhag isnt that good. maybe its time for him to go
@@cameronjones8641 two years already, same thing happened against brighton last season, outplayed by lallana welbeck groß. i support tenhag, but its frustrating getting outmatched by lesser/older players
@hanif-pl5hd Now that I can agree with. There's no point calling for his head but am 100% on your side when we've got millions of pounds worth of talent and we can't beat a team that only 1 or two players would get near our squad.
lol I was at the game, mainoo and billy gilmour best players on the pitch easily, Barely lost the ball too and won 80% of his duels easily, regained possession in their half, won tackles in our box, mainoo’s performance only dropped off a bit when baleba came on.
We haven't seen any real glory for 10 years. We are becoming a relic, a shadow of power and strength. Let's hope this ENEOS project bears fruit in the next 2-3 years. 🤞🏼
Dalot and Mazraoui actually had the better of the Brighton wide players. Midfield was the issue. There was still loads of space to exploit, Casemiro being leggy and Mainoo not blessed with pace and power renders the United midfield easy to attack
Our midfield and defenders cannot run. Casemiro fucking slow, Mainoo not that fast too. They can't even battle with a 39 years old Millner.. Mainoo néed to stop dribbling in shit areas. Simple and early pass to release others. Brighton players diligently closing down all our players. When we have chance to counter they're able to track back and tackle as they can sprint faster than us. We are lacking in speed, stamina and composure to score.
Seeing as Pedro was their best player and then the impact Baleba/Enciso made off the bench it was clear we lost momentum because of the middle. We won the battle out wide
Hopefully we can have more of this type of format during the season

Which players are people speaking of? At the moment I don’t think anyone can question his lineup it’s just a shame he’s still having to start a Casemiro
@@ThePythagorasPerspective ive seen some fans demanding zirkzee starts, but I believe his fitness is not all there yet. Ten hag has stated that they not only want zirkzee to drop and play with the wingers, but to also find himself at the end of their attacking chances.
Interesting analysis
Do you think that if we wanted to bring the most out of Maino we need to start sancho and mazroui on the left ?
And do you think that ugatree will solve man united problem in cdm?
And do you think that the cb partnership of deligt and lesandro will allow us to play higher line . Therefore , tightening the space in midfield and improve out press structure?
Sancho and Maz are more better for link up yes, although there won’t be penetration with that pairing so you gain one thing and lose another.
Ugarte brings legs but is positionally chaotic so not ideal fix.
De Ligt and Licha on paper should give United a higher line as will a fit Yoro.
@ThePythagorasPerspective plz more of this, I'm a utd fan aswell.
that match proved ten hag's incompetence. He's the guy takes man united to the 4th place as the best possible scenario. He's not the guy to bring back the glory. Furthermore, i believe ineos are keeping him to use him as a scapegoat
Plausible
I feel the Fullbacks prevented a 3 or 4 goal margin for Brighton. They worked their socks off
Yep they put in a real shift
Sick breakdown
Rashford has stopped developing, stop giving fat contracts on the drop of hat. It is the root of evil at Utd.
Totally agree
pls make more contents like this
Will do!
Do you think Ugarte will improve the midfield?
Or another DM?
Anyway, I love your channel. 🔥
I think Ugarte by default improves the midfield by being younger and hungry than Casemiro but I still think we will see positional error and lack of build up control
hopefully this signing of ugarte can help with covering that ground Casemiro can’t
We have so many options for AM but no DMs. Still iritats me why we signed Mount instead of a proper DM last season; like Baleba or Lavia
Agreed
The pressing and play from back was great, that's the only positive I can take. They need to play like this the whole game and not revert to type. Utd dominated possession overall against a Brighton that is good in that exactly. Those are the only small positives I'll take, although small.
I thought we dealt with their danger men out wide well but didn’t show the same competence in central regions
I thought the job of the new set piece coach was coaching the set piece. lol
Sack him 😅
I love this channel but im unsure if Zirkzee for mount was the right decision.
Going forward, i feel Ugarte and Mount should be our midfield partnership and allow Mainoo come in later on
you should keep this content on the main channel imo
It ruins our algorithm. Hence we needed a new platform.
Love this
Thanks Rafi
Casemiero was more to the left because Rashford was the least involved in the press and general defense
That might be the case but there was no threat down that side bar Minteh which Dalot had already locked off.
Mainoo and Casemiro should not be playing more than 65mins as Casemiro is old and slow while Mainoo is not fast and has stamina issues as he is still young!
Bad combo
@@ThePythagorasPerspectiveToby Collyer should have been introduced in the 70th min for either of them.
I agree with the fact that brigthon deserved the win it was a bit back and forth tho
Ever so slightly. It was a 55/45 type of game. United could easily have won it too.
@@ThePythagorasPerspective exactly
If united scored that second goal brighton would have been dowm and out united would have got even more chances on counterattack so we were even more unlucky
@@anishwinger I agree unfortunate but we move
does any of our midfielders just want to sit in front of our centre backs. it seems mainoo and casemiro like to attack just as much as our attackers. the manager needs to tell both midfielders just to sit and dont move. we have 4 forwards, push 1 FB up and keep the rest back 325 essentially
Mixture of poor discipline and poor tactics
Apt title should be "How Ten Hag broke United's game"
As a fellow United fan and a Moroccan, please stop saying MaTzraoui, his name is pronounced exactly as it reads
I need to stop doing this 😓
What do you use to analyze this bro
Tactics board
Thanks bro
His lack of standards will come back to haunt him eventually
I liked the forma!
Thanks bud
Gilmour iq wise and milner physically bullied maino till 65 mins . And then baleba came in and made maino twerk and expose baddddd . Maino is not a midfield who is athletic, pace or covers grounds . He's more of a press resistance cm who likes the space and calms down with the tempo . Rather ugarte man utd need a controller 6 who can sweep too to avoid maino getting exposed so much at 19 years of age .
Yup he needs an athletic CDM next to him
Collyer and Mainoo or Collyer and Casemiro should pair in midfield until Ugarte arrives!
Agreed he should have come on
ETH must pick a squad on merit and not otherwise, we have enough artillery to beat any team but he deliberately picks the wrong guys every game😂😂😂😂
Toby Collyer ‼️‼️‼️
Can’t believe he didn’t come on for Casemiro
Ten hang seems to forget Martinez maguire pairing has always completely failed.... Those two doest work for reasons I can't explain.... He shouldn't try that pairing against Liverpool or man u will b messed up
Unpopular opinion but Bruno is both a strength and weakness. The defense needed strengthening and now midfield. We ain't winning things for 2 more seasons.
Bruno isn’t the right player for a possession based style imo
@@ThePythagorasPerspective The midfield needs an overhaul. 2-3 players minimum, then there is wingers. This seems like a never ending loop at united. We are cursed
Lol @@ThePythagorasPerspective
Pythag is a yanited fan?😂❤
I dont get why we aren't playing Harry Amass at left back? Play Garnacho left wing.
Amass would be a better fit for the inverted wingers down the left
game stopped again in wings.. like it has stopped last 4 years.
No dribbles past opponent
poor passes
passes backwards
..
Especially down the left
@@ThePythagorasPerspective amad had keys of this game. He missed two crucial passes that would have been goals for sure.
One for bruno/rash (that he finally passed late waaay back of rash)
and one for zirkze run, but chose not to pass at all.
I just hope these guys are wake in post match video reviews and learn
Hopefully ugarte and the 18year old cdm . Would take on the job for Manchester
Please do for Chiesa
Why remove Bruno for mc tominay instead of case for mc tominay
No idea.
Ok casemiro is old enough he would change but there is no creativity in our attacking
Positioning is shit from Man Utd players.
welbeck 34, milner 38, veltman 32, dunk 33, it amazes me how brighton outplayed united with very old players in their team. maybe tenhag isnt that good. maybe its time for him to go
Two games in. Wind your neck in!
@hanif-pl5hd We have to show patience this time as frustrating as it is. This year to push for 4th and next year to challenge the top 3. Nothing less.
lol I was at the game, mainoo and billy gilmour best players on the pitch easily, Barely lost the ball too and won 80% of his duels easily, regained possession in their half, won tackles in our box, mainoo’s performance only dropped off a bit when baleba came on.
Mainoo will always stand out for United but I felt we made it very hard for him today
Glory Glory man utd
We haven't seen any real glory for 10 years. We are becoming a relic, a shadow of power and strength. Let's hope this ENEOS project bears fruit in the next 2-3 years. 🤞🏼
@@cameronjones8641 everything ineos done at this time is great..and it's a positive for United future..i always optimistic for United bro
This old ass players gotta go
You people will do everything but blame tactics for that shitty performance
Explain...
You make clips of it as if it was hard assigment hahahaha
Dalot was poor. He alows crosses into the box by jokeying
Defensively I don’t think he was that bad
Dalot and Mazraoui actually had the better of the Brighton wide players. Midfield was the issue. There was still loads of space to exploit, Casemiro being leggy and Mainoo not blessed with pace and power renders the United midfield easy to attack
Do barca vs athletic
Only caught last 30 minutes. I’ll cover future Barca games vs big rivals
Ten hag is confused just like I am confused in football manager
Midfield tactics seem beyond him at this stage
They aren't. He knows far more about it than you. @@ThePythagorasPerspective
A far cry from the Ince Keane duo of 1994.
I’m probably never gonna see Man Utd win the prem before i die and I’m 23 😭💔
Have faith it’ll happen once the INEOs era kicks in to gear I hope
@@ThePythagorasPerspective hopefully🙏🏿, because i never got to fully experience those glory days
@@Stephenheaven7I did, it was amazing 👏🏼
Stop making noise bro. You’re saying they broke United’s midfield because they won. They didn’t play shit
Seeing as Pedro was their best player and then the impact Baleba/Enciso made off the bench it was clear we lost momentum because of the middle. We won the battle out wide
