Someone mentioned it in the comments of another "Cabin in the Woods" reaction, and I never thought of it until they pointed it out... the bad guys in this movie miscast all of the sacrifices. Dana is the "whore," who was sleeping with her professor, dancing around in her underwear in front of an open window, etc. Jules is the fool, doing a strip tease and making out with a wolf head for the entertainment of others. Kurt is the scholar, since they mention that he's a sociology major with a 4.0 GPA. Holden is the jock, with his amazing catch in the street near the start, and his general physique when we see him through the mirror. Marty is the virgin, who they say made out with Jules once, and he gets all bashful and tries to play it off with a joke (plus, he's the resourceful "final girl" who survives and manages to save the day). The bad guys used hair dye and chemically treated weed and jumped through all these hoops to force the cast into these roles, and every stereotype they had to use was assigned to the wrong person. I thought it was a really neat take on it. So, I had to share it. 👋
_"Jules is the fool, doing a strip tease and making out with a wolf head for the entertainment of others."_ But she does that because they "program" her to act as "the whore", not because of how she usually acts since Dana and Marty think it's odd.
Also, who is to say it was Marty’s blood that was sacrificed. He lived and it could be his blood or the zombie’s blood or a mixture. Even if they had the right persons blood to stereotype, and Marty is the virgin, what if it wasn’t Marty’s blood and it would still fail. More food for thought.
The funny thing about the casting is that Franz Kranz was actually the most jacked member of the cast, and you can still tell even with the baggy clothes they have him wearing.
I am aware, mainly because my favorite rendition of Much Ado About Nothing is Whedon's from 2011 (sorry fans of iambic pentameter) which was made in 2 weeks over a break in the production of The Avengers. Watching Chris Hemsworth in his heroic speech here (before he gets pancaked by the hunger games forcefield lol) is no joke what got him the role as Thor. Well in Much Ado you see Claudio (Fran Kranz) shirtless for about 4 seconds and lordddd you could shred fine parmesan on that boy's sharp ass 8 pack.
Friendly reminder that Hemsworth wore a body suit in Thor to amplify his musculature to unreal levels. Hemsworth, while ripped, is not the absolute brick shithouse that Thor appears as in the MCU. They purposefully over exaggerated his body due to his godly nature and it's prudent to remember this. I know quite a few people who aspire to have that "Thor" physique and it's almost impossible for a regular Joe to attain that body.
This made me look up deadly unicorn folklore and yep, there are plenty of tales of unicorns straight up stabbing things to death with their horn. If a mythical creature exists, there's a story out there of it murdering everyone XD
The scenes with the guys in the control room were honestly my favourite parts of the film. I just love the contrast between the fairly generic horror movie shenanigans and the fairly mundane office-like environment trying to keep the narrative on track. Plus, Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water) and Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) have great comedic chemistry and get easily the funniest scenes in the film - the moment where they're speaking to "the harbinger" (the guy at the gas stop) over the speakerphone was the point where I knew I was going to love this film
This is very meta we the horror fans are the ancient gods .. The office people are the director the group of young adults are what horror fans want from a cast and the customers are the general audience Sourgerney is the producer watching it with this in mind makes it even more enjoyable
I love the title slamming on the screen with loud noise, cause usually they do that after a cold open of someone getting killed, and they do it here with two dudes discussing home renovation and shit mid-conversation
You missed it but the hair spray and them splitting up is because chemicals that were put into them to make them dumber, The best part is all the detail the fact that the orgainization isntead of picking the right people forced them into roles they were not suppose to be in means they were fucked from the start
That they are forced into the wrong roles is the funniest part to me. The introduction scene tells you who they all are, except Marty - his virgin status is revealed later
24:25 The joke is that he's saying "Zombies" and the "Zombie Redneck Torture Family" are distinct enough monsters from each other that it's like the difference between an elephant and an elephant seal. He's not saying that they just have a seal in storage with all the monsters lmao
In the original myths, unicorn was a very wild and dangerous creature, which is why the hunters had to cheat by using its weakness: the presence of a virgin maiden calms it down. A lot of fantasy creatures that are nowadays portrayed as nice and cutesy were mean motherfuckers who would kill you with zero hesitation (well, at least if you're a virgin woman you are safe from the unicorn lol.)
_"A lot of fantasy creatures that are nowadays portrayed as nice and cutesy were mean motherfuckers who would kill you with zero hesitation"_ Including genies and gnomes.
Lol, my friend's mother in law oiled her creaky front door when she was visiting for the holidays and my friend was so annoyed! 😂 When she told me, the first thing I said was, "Oh, no! Now you can't hear if an intruder comes in." 😅 Because thats why I like my doors creaky, too.
Uhh, speaking as an American, I'd say Chris Hemsworth's US accent is spot-on, especially for that kind of character. He specifically sounds like someone from the midwest, or maybe the southern parts of the country. :)
Saw you reacted to this and had to watch it immediately. Love this movie! It's so unpredictable, it really blindsides you, which is rare these days. The use of stereotypes and explaining them in a way that ties it all together was fantastic.
One of Josh Whedon's tricks as a storyteller is to march straight at a cliche', and then side step it and make fun of it while passing. You see a lot of that in Buffy.
4:05 If you like Jesse Williams, and haven't played it yet, check out the game Detroit: Become Human. He did the voice and mocap for a character and it looks almost exactly like him.
Fun fact! Sigourney Weaver says the sun comes up in __ minutes and the sacrifice will fail if they haven't killed off everyone but the final girl (aka the movie itself will suck because it didn't upkeep our expectations), that's how many minutes are actually left in the movie. We are the eternal gods, the audience either approving or booing. Extra fun fact, Drew Goddard mentioned they needed horror genre royalty for the Director and were really nervous if Sigourney would do it. She gladly not only accepted. apparently, at every chance possible, she asked where was the werewolf and when could she could hang out with the werewolf. You can see her gleefully holding hands with the werewolf as the crew take a group photo. There is pure fangirl joy in her face. K so the since we're the gods the movie is the most meta, loving deconstruction on horror movies (love the shout-out to J-horror). The director people you can interpose as a studio making a horror movie. They end up succumbing to their very own premise; just as they mocked the gang for ignoring the harbinger, they e x p l i c i t l y ignore the harbinger minutes later. The only year they failed before is mentioned to be 1993. That year's horror movie was The Faculty, which noticeably averted the American horror movie expectations. Now, not about the movie but about people: every female reactor I've seen is rightfully like 'wtf' with the male voyeurs waiting for to see tits. But I've heard male critics discuss the meta levels of Cabin in the Woods and how the cut to the voyeurs "was 100% on point" at capturing that 'true to life's experience growing up watching horror movies. 🤨 I mean there's the fact that we're meant to treat our gang exactly like horror movie characters, not like people to be empathized with but sacrificed for our entertainment cause it's not real. So there's consent in that it's a consenting actor. But my feelings regarding that noticable gender reaction difference is: 🤨. 😑.
Next up: Tucker & Dale vs. Evil Also The Exorcist. It turns fifty this year and it would be a fitting tribute to the director (William Friedkin). He passed away earlier this month.
I'd passed on Tucker & Dale many times, before someone who I trusted recommended it to me. Then I watched it and started designing myself a self-kicking butt. It's amazing.
Years ago I was recommended this movie when it was playing in cinemas and I loved it. Joss Whedon said it was a love letter to all horror movie fans and conventional tropes. The big guy that Dana was looking at in the lift (saw blades in head holding a sphere) was homage to Pinhead (nails in head holding a cube). On the off-chance that you're curious, there are videos on TH-cam that explore each monster listed on the whiteboard. And yay, the gem stayed on the whole time without falling off again :)
I love that you think Hemsworths American accent is terrible lol I'm American and always thought it sounded pretty good. So good I never even questioned whether he was American or not and was surprised to find out he's Australian
I saw this with my theatre group. We had just finished our stage production of Evil Dead: the Musical. The movie followed that show, funny enough, and we had a blast!
the wolf head was fake! apparently taxidermy was illegal wherever they filmed (I think Canada) in medieval lore, unicorns killed non-virgins that approached them :) thank you for reacting to this movie, its one of my favs! and I enjoyed your commentary
This movie really benefits from a 2nd watch. Once you get that it's a meta-commentary on horror movies. You catch a lot more of the subtle stuff they put in here. The popular theory is that *WE* are the ancient gods that the movie people are being sacrificed to. Horror movie fans are the gods to be appeased with the stereotypes.
25:02 - HELLRAISER homage. If you haven't yet seen it, especially the new one (2022) .. err .. hmm, not so sure if I'd recommend it, it's a bit of a rough ride ..
The point of the stereotypes was that they had to force the situation to happen by chemically altering the characters so they'd fit into the stereotypes. None of them actually were the types until the experiment runners messed with them.
My favorite part is how none of them are really the stereotypes they are supposed to be. Its fabricated or forced by the bad guys. its just a fun twist on a movie with a horror twist already haha.
Not only is this true it is why they failed in the end. The fact they miscast all of the characters is why they failed to be successful. Dana is the scholar, Marty is the Virgin, Curt is the fool, Holden is the athlete and Jules is the whore. There is a small chance that Dana is the whore since she slept with her teacher but there is no good way to think Jules is the scholar so that is likely wrong.
Personally, I don't like student teacher relationships no matter the education level or maturity of both involved, since the power disparity will always make it creepy for me.
The movie Behind the Mask The rise of Leslie Vernon is a nother love letter to horror movies. It is similar to the movie Scream it also has non stop horror movie references throughout the entire movie.
30:07 Yes, Nine Inch Nails! My favorite band. :D (song is "Last") Watched this movie back then when it was released, didn't remember NIN was in the credits until I saw this reaction. ^^
oh. I was just about to start playing my newly purchased game. just as I was reloading the recommendations page one last time as the download was finishing up, this showed up. yeah I can... not play for another half hour.

Why wouldn't Unicorns be deadly? I bet they're horrible, like mermen. And holy shit, I've watched this movie over the years and never knew NIN was doing the song at the end!!!
Did you notice how the one worker said “you should talk Aquaman” referring to the guy obsession with the merman. Did you notice how the one worker said “you should talk Aquaman” referring to the guy obsession with the merman. I think those film wheels are like the movie Sinister & My question is, where they in a dome? They said earlier that that the plot was sold over and over and Marty wasn’t killed that hacking sound was Marty killing the zombie with a trowel. And finally WHY TF WOULD THEY PUT A BIG BUTTON THAT SAID PURGE THAT RELEASES THE MONSTERS
15:50 Hopefully someday you can watch this movie again with the right mindset, you don't seem to get the themes at play here in the film. Creepiness was the point. If you are someone who is going to come at me with "You don't care about creepy men watching girls without consent?" then don't bother, you don't get it either and I'll ignore you.
The movie is one huge 4th wall break. We (the viewers) are the great gods. We watch horror movies and require a sacrifice. Often the same "recipie" but with all crazy ways to die. And watching a japanese horror we expect child ghost for example. And if we don't get the sacrifices we expect we "destroy the world" (change channel)
I agree with your bird scene assessment. I know they kinda tip their hands early with the underground office scenes but I would rather have them not show the bird hitting the dome wall early. Then Hemsworth hitting it later would have been a nice surprise.
To be honest, I think showing the bird hitting the barrier makes the later scene better. If it were removed, then Curt hitting it during the jump would be a brief shock but little more than that. Including the earlier scene means we're aware of the barrier already, and thus raises the tension and dread when he tries to make the jump because we know he's toast (also the incredible bravado and hubris he shows makes the inevitability of his demise even funnier)
I've read the book, and while it's not high quality literature it's at least readable. _Battlefield Earth_ the movie is just an insult to the existence of brain cells. I forced myself to finish it just so I could say I did, but I still can't remember any of my childhood pet's names or the number 7 multiplication table.
I remember watching this in the cinima and we all hated the people controlling the whole thing and we wanted them dead as the film pushes them as the bad guys but at the end is a twist and we see that they where infarct the good guys doing what was needed to keep the world safe and in reality the kids where the bad guys as they allowed the world to be destroyed
Hey guys! What's your go to horror movie? Any new recs?
Apt Pupil has Ian McKellan playing a Nazi in hiding and is really creepy.
The Wicker Man (1973) - “The Citizen Kane of horror films” An absolute classic with Christopher Lee. My favourite horror film of all time
U should check out some cool horror anthology films, like VHS and Creepshow.
I have options, but it's a list a half hour long
The Thing. It's a standard when it comes to horror, is amazingly written, and has some of the best practical effects ever.
So genius!
_"Jules is the fool, doing a strip tease and making out with a wolf head for the entertainment of others."_
But she does that because they "program" her to act as "the whore", not because of how she usually acts since Dana and Marty think it's odd.
That's a good comment. I never really thought about the whole cast, only the few who acted out of character when the mist hit. That's great.
@nicsandnacs hey you should do another Finding Nemo reaction with any cuts in the movie would be great to see a full reaction 😊
It's funny that the guy playing the stoner was more ripped than the guy who plays Thor.
Also, he’s actually gone to Ivy League, so he ain’t dumb either.
Yep, that's why they had him wear baggy ass clothes.
There's just not enough movies where everyone dies, I love that ending. One of the best movies ever.
'How hard is it to kill 9 year olds?!'
That line is easily my favourite. xD
This made me look up deadly unicorn folklore and yep, there are plenty of tales of unicorns straight up stabbing things to death with their horn. If a mythical creature exists, there's a story out there of it murdering everyone XD
I honestly am scared to search up any fairytale/mythical creatures now 😳
Rule 34.5.
Well since unicorn legends first came from Rinos it makes a lot of sense that there would be stories of charging unicorns.
Would have been more suiting if Bradley Whitford had been the one to go on to Shape of Water haha
I’m here for Marty. One of the best characters ever!
yes Indeed
This is very meta we the horror fans are the ancient gods .. The office people are the director the group of young adults are what horror fans want from a cast and the customers are the general audience Sourgerney is the producer watching it with this in mind makes it even more enjoyable
This is actually my favorite horror movie 😂 it’s such a unique premise (plus that final act alone is incredible) it’s so underrated
Act 3 is perfection 👌🏼 Such a fun movie!
I love the title slamming on the screen with loud noise, cause usually they do that after a cold open of someone getting killed, and they do it here with two dudes discussing home renovation and shit mid-conversation
You missed it but the hair spray and them splitting up is because chemicals that were put into them to make them dumber,
The best part is all the detail the fact that the orgainization isntead of picking the right people forced them into roles they were not suppose to be in means they were fucked from the start
Students having a crush on their teacher is ok.
Teachers having a crush on students is a no no.
_"A lot of fantasy creatures that are nowadays portrayed as nice and cutesy were mean motherfuckers who would kill you with zero hesitation"_
Including genies and gnomes.
Lol, my friend's mother in law oiled her creaky front door when she was visiting for the holidays and my friend was so annoyed! 😂 When she told me, the first thing I said was, "Oh, no! Now you can't hear if an intruder comes in." 😅 Because thats why I like my doors creaky, too.
so funny watching her realize it's a comedy/satire on horror cliches
It was definitely an experience 😂
Uhh, speaking as an American, I'd say Chris Hemsworth's US accent is spot-on, especially for that kind of character. He specifically sounds like someone from the midwest, or maybe the southern parts of the country. :)
Saw you reacted to this and had to watch it immediately. Love this movie! It's so unpredictable, it really blindsides you, which is rare these days.
The use of stereotypes and explaining them in a way that ties it all together was fantastic.
So glad to see you getting back into an upload rhythm! One of the best reactors.
All of the makeup and prosthetics are top notch. All of the best artists in Hollywood contributed. It’s a cool story.
I watch this every Halloween season, it's the perfect mix of creative horror and fun scares, great for the spooky time of year
One of Josh Whedon's tricks as a storyteller is to march straight at a cliche', and then side step it and make fun of it while passing. You see a lot of that in Buffy.
That Breakfast Club cut was masterful. 😂
Evil
Also The Exorcist. It turns fifty this year and it would be a fitting tribute to the director (William Friedkin). He passed away earlier this month.
+1 for Tucker and Dale, greatest movie I'd never heard of before watching.
I'd passed on Tucker & Dale many times, before someone who I trusted recommended it to me. Then I watched it and started designing myself a self-kicking butt. It's amazing.
If Sigourney Weaver was the one who asked me to die, I think I'd be okay with it
The hair and makeup are immaculate. ❤
Thanks 🩷
@@nicsandnacs you're welcome queen
Hi Nici It's great to see you , love the hair ! 💖 I love your reaction to this movie I just saw a 2 days ago !!!:)
Finallyyyy. I love your reactions.
the wolf head was fake! apparently taxidermy was illegal wherever they filmed (I think Canada)
in medieval lore, unicorns killed non-virgins that approached them :)
thank you for reacting to this movie, its one of my favs! and I enjoyed your commentary
Was super fun editing and rewatching it. The writing is perfect 🩷
I love your horror reactions ❤ thanks for the laughs 😂
Thanks 🩵
Just wanted to say that Breakfast Club edit made me straight up laugh. Well done.
As a horror fan this was hilarious. It's such a fun movie
its funny you mentioned hemsworths accent, the blonde actress is well known in New Zealand- just across the ditch as we say
Perfect timing! 😁 Fabulous makeup
Thanks 🩷🩷
They were all drugged for a while to act like stereotypes before went to the cabin
Fantastic deconstruction of the genre.🙏
Jesse Williams is also in this season of "Only Murders in the Building", a show I have a feeling you will enjoy (if you haven't seen it yet).
I don't find it strange there is a basement in every horror movie.
I find it strange none of them have lighting.
You're makeup looks so beautiful! 😍
Thanks 🩷 using white eyeliner for the first time. Definitely sisters not twins haha
6:30 not a goddamn person wants THAT PoS car. I wouldn't lock it either. XD
YES I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE
Have Europeans lost the concept of satire and irony? How are you not grasping the film? My god!
That NIN song is on the "Broken" EP. A must have.
:D (song is "Last")
Watched this movie back then when it was released, didn't remember NIN was in the credits until I saw this reaction. ^^
I’m with you on the Austin Powers thing, every time
I can admire movies that hack at the foundational tropes. 😊
Yay! I knew you’d like it
Love the vid!
I love a good Nicole reaction! Cheers!
All other horror movies can be tied this movie, if you think about it
oh. I was just about to start playing my newly purchased game. just as I was reloading the recommendations page one last time as the download was finishing up, this showed up. yeah I can... not play for another half hour.
Haha appreciate the support 😂 enjoy your new game ☺️
NIN live was the craziest light show I've ever watched in my life.
Out of this world 😍
I can't believe you hadn't seen "Cabin in the Woods" yet. Wild.
I feel like she's missing some details of the movie...like when they split up, she couldn't understand why they would decide to do that.

Not a simulation
Another movie with a sick NiN track - The Crow (watch just before Halloween 😉)
one of the best movies of modern horror
Great movie! I love it
He finally see the Merman Lol :D
Close up an personal wich is better then seeing. It on any kind of screen or monitor because in person you can really get a good look at it.
There's a lot more to this movie than you think, you should check out a video explaining this movie.
Why wouldn't Unicorns be deadly? I bet they're horrible, like mermen. And holy shit, I've watched this movie over the years and never knew NIN was doing the song at the end!!!
There was a killer unicorn in Supernatural aswell.
prequel for this movie would be nice
That’s true why does a Nordic god have an Australian accent 😂😂😂
Did you notice how the one worker said “you should talk Aquaman” referring to the guy obsession with the merman.
Did you notice how the one worker said “you should talk Aquaman” referring to the guy obsession with the merman.
I think those film wheels are like the movie Sinister
&
My question is, where they in a dome?
They said earlier that that the plot was sold over and over and Marty wasn’t killed that hacking sound was Marty killing the zombie with a trowel.
And finally WHY TF WOULD THEY PUT A BIG BUTTON THAT SAID PURGE THAT RELEASES THE MONSTERS
15:50
Hopefully someday you can watch this movie again with the right mindset, you don't seem to get the themes at play here in the film. Creepiness was the point.
If you are someone who is going to come at me with "You don't care about creepy men watching girls without consent?" then don't bother, you don't get it either and I'll ignore you.
That unicorn was a funny as hell conceit to throw into this wild movie! Never look at a unicorn the same way again.
This movie competes with Tucker and Dale vs Evil for my favorite comedy-horror.
A unicorn would only do that to someone who was evil
From their in-universe/canon perspective, why would you have a "RELEASE ALL MONSTERS AT ONCE" button? Like why? Lmao
I adore this movie. Please do Silent Hill, I've asked sooo many horror movie commentary channels do it and no one will =(
11:01 foreshadowing 😂
You should watch red white and royal blue! It’s a romcom and it’s so cute! I’d love to see your reaction to it
Watched it the minute it came out and loved it 🩷 I may have rewatched it a couple more times since 😂
I agree with your bird scene assessment.
I don't know anything about makeup, but for what it's worth, I think yours looks impressively pretty in every video
Seriously, you were salivating over seeing a guy naked but then criticize a joke sex scene!? Messed up!!!!
You should watch girl in the bassement next
girl we just want your reaction of the movie.
Dutch angle: horror movies and Battlefield Earth
I've read the book, and while it's not high quality literature it's at least readable. _Battlefield Earth_ the movie is just an insult to the existence of brain cells. I forced myself to finish it just so I could say I did, but I still can't remember any of my childhood pet's names or the number 7 multiplication table.
I love this horror!
Great reactions as always
omg your reaction is fantastic
I remember watching this in the cinima and we all hated the people controlling the whole thing and we wanted them dead as the film pushes them as the bad guys but at the end is a twist and we see that they where infarct the good guys doing what was needed to keep the world safe and in reality the kids where the bad guys as they allowed the world to be destroyed
I don't swoon over Jessie Williams. But I'm queer. So, there's that. ✌🤓🏳🌈
Twilight...Vampires that twinkle in the sunlight...cmon.
the ADHD was strong this reaction LOL
