This has been in the works since last year’s December but things just kept getting in the way and in the end I had to do most of it during my summer break (hahahahah)
This animatic takes place before Jiang cheng and Wei Wuxian had their fight : )) Song is from the Prince of Egypt musical
I hope you enjoy : ) I find Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian’s brotherly bond very tragic, and the fact that they never truly reconciled in the book makes me even sadder.
FAQ
What’s MDZS?
MoDaoZuShi, or The grandmaster of demonic cultivation is a Chinese BL Webnovel. Wei Wuxian, a demonic cultivator feared and hated by millions was killed 13 years prior to the main story and summoned back to life due to mysterious reasons!
This animatic portrays the rocky relationship between him and his brother.
There are english translations online and different adaptations of it including a Donghua, comic, and live action drama. It’s definitely worth a read :D
How did you make this?
I used a combination of Clip studio paint and After affects for this animatic. Before that I made a rough draft of it in Storyboard Pro (which I will post soon : ) )
Is this accurate to the book?
Hmmmm! No!! I definitely designed the cave to be a lot more dramatic than it probably is in the book but well…I want to make this animatic as dramatic as possible
Wasn’t the sword sealed?
It indeed is…but Jiang Cheng doesn’t know this and assumed that Wei Wuxian’s sword isn’t sealed (meaning he thought Wei Wuxian can still unsheathe it himself) because Wei Wuxian is still alive isn’t he? : ))))

The fact that WWX looks like he's getting into it, then the minute JC goes "like this never happened" his honest smile drops. JC wants to save JUST WWX, but WWX isn't willing to let the Wens all die... When he realizes JC isn't going to help save them, help do the right thing, he knows he can't take this offer
The problem is, how is saving the wens the right thing if you see the whole story, he never told JC what he debt to the wens and the why he help them. It was for a debt and he as think he lose all, he stay with them. JC have his other side of the "do the right thing" that is get rid of them, those who destroy everything even if they're not directly involved, but at some point they were part of it.
so both have the "right thing" in hands and at the same time, is the wrong thing for the other...
@@Takanosenpai wrroooong. jc knew they had a debt to the wens bc wq and wn sheltered them right after the fall of lotus pier, AND wn retrieved the dead bodies of jfm and yzy, knowing that it risked their lives if they were caught. The dafan wens never had anything to do with what wen ruohan did
@@Takanosenpai the ones WWX sheltered were an innocent group who exclusively practiced medicine, and it’s even mentioned in the donghua that they were healing and saving members of the Sunshot campaign rather than siding with the other Wens. And besides which, they were mostly helpless elderly people and children who couldn’t have been involved anyway. So even if you disregard JC’s personal debts to them (he knew some of them, as stated by the comment above mine), WWX was literally fighting against the genocide of an innocent group of people. JC knew they were innocents and said it didn’t matter, that WWX should just look out for himself and their own clan. WWX sided with the innocent against the masses knowing it was suicide, I’d say that’s as “right thing” as it gets.
Ooh my gosh I love how this focuses so much on how desperate JC actually is to save his bro! I feel like jc's love for wwx isn't talked about enough. He just doesn't wanna lose his brother and his only friend, yet he still got pushed away. Aghh the angst😭

@@RHY5IE in a way, he was still pushed away as Wei Wuxian decided against going with Jiang Cheng and leaving the Wen remnants. Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng were raised as brothers and for Wei Wuxian to refuse going with his ‘brother’ for people he was hardly close with would lead Jiang Cheng to feel extreme hurt and betrayal. In my opinion, both Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian hurt eachother and could’ve handled things better, but NEITHER of them are innocent in the destruction of their relationship at all.
@@user-yr7sg6vk2z i wasnt saying it was jcs fault entirely, i was calling out to **op** that they were completely ignoring that jc literally told wwx to let that bunch of old people, kids etc die for just having the name wen even tho they literally saved him and wwx. and for what? did we watch the same series? sure i think they both couldve communicated and done better but it certainly wasnt wwx and jcs faults equally but ok sure 😶🙄
@@RHY5IE a) op never said anything about the Wens, they were just focusing on Jiang Chengs perspective in the situation b) nobody said that it was their faults equally, and if anything, it almost seems that you are trying to villanise one character more than the other, mainly because you hold a bias. It is purely up to the readers interpretation on who is more at fault with the destruction of their relationship. You could give a point and somebody could say “but he did that because…” and it could just repeat

I think people sometimes forget that jc was desperate in trying to save wwx too and frankly I think you encaptured the desperation that jc was feeling while also encapturing the regret that wwx feels when he pushes jc away bcz he cant/refuses to tell jc why hes pushing him away once more

God I love this
When JC offered out Suibian it was so heartbreaking, he was offering something that WWX could never have and he didn't even know it. And I love the little microexpression WWX does when JC says 'like this never happened' because he does want to join him, however forgetting this goes against all his values and he can't do that either. In the end, he doesn't want to hurt JC, but he has to because he wants to keep the core exchange a secret and he can't leave without revealing it so instead he makes it seem like he made the choice when really, the choice had been made for him as soon as he gave his core to JC. In the end, it leaves painful confusion and misunderstanding because of half truths and lies that WWX never thought would lead up to it ending up like this.

Oh my gosh, I remember watching your monster animatic and being blown away, so when I got this in my recommended I never clicked faster. This is really amazing! I always felt like Jiang Cheng and Wei their relationship was one of the more underrated parts of the story.

The bit after the song? W wwx slumping down in despair cause he’s just pushed away the last remaining person in his family and jc crying at the entrance because he failed and now his brother will die and he will actually be all alone? Heartbreaking. Great work

I keep coming back to this to rewatch it. I love how Wei Wuxian’s demeanor changes when Jiang Cheng insinuates that what WW can be absolved by ignoring what he did.
Abandoned my assignment for this since I couldn’t put this video aside.
Jiang Cheng caught me off guard when he was about to strike Wen Ning, BUT THANKFULLY WEI WUXIAN BUTT IN. I love how the focus is on the Yunmeng Prides, and the lyrics fit with each of them. Beautiful animatic, as always !
I saw the thumbnail and I immediately knew that I had to drop everything to watch this
JC is the type of person who would do everything for the people he loves while WX is the type who will always does what he thinks is right. I think that JC really wanted to help his brother, but his duty to the rest of his people- what remained of them- is also holding him back.
I think one of the reason JC resent WWX so much is because he can't save him, he can't save his brother, the only family he had left at the time, when WWX turned away from him and the whole world, he couldn't do anything about it. he hated his brother for not staying by him like he had promised.

Wow this is just incredible! Once I heard this song I automatically thought of JC and WWX but wasn't able to picture exactly how I would draw it out and therefore decided to start working on a WWX focused animatic with Footprints on the Sand. It's so cool seeing your take with this song, and it really goes above and beyond with your expressions etc. Also, my heart

Thank you for Some Fucking Nuance in this fandom! The relationship between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian is so complicated and tragic, and I think you captured it beautifully. Jiang Cheng loves his brother. They have very different moral compasses (Jiang Cheng prioritises the people close to him, willing to let other people suffer if it means what little is left of his family is safe, which makes a lot of sense when you consider he watched most of his family slaughtered), while Wei Wuxian cares about people in the more universal, traditionally heroic sense of the word. He can’t abandon a group of innocents to be hurt. He won’t. Neither of them is evil, both are looking at it from different vantage points.
The love is there. The love and the care are there, but they aren’t enough to change the outcome.
This song just fits so well with Jiang cheng and Wei Wuxian.

The way the camera moves and the acting is so well done it makes me remember how animators have to embody all jobs in film at the same time, which you did amazing at! There are a lot of fans who forget that the two of them really did love each other.
The absolute raw facial expressions, I felt my guts just twisting and and my heart sinking, absolute wonderful job. Their bond is so tragic and you really nailed all the aspects of how much they reach out only to shove each other away :,O

This is amazing!!! My heart keeps breaking and so many tears! I love ur art style. Wish I could draw!!! Also the song ikanaide reminds me of the longing lan Zhan would have waiting for Wei ying. I would listen to that song before I got into mzds and now every time I listen to it all I can think of is lan Zhan waiting for Wei ying in gusu. Playing there song and trying to reach out to Wei ying but not being able to. Seeing his beloved walk away with his demonic cultivation. Not being able to save him, watching as the world cursed the person he loved. Not being able to express how hurt he was by wei ying’s death and continuing to live. Just ugh!
Watching this before getting into MDZS then after getting into it and understanding what’s going on hits so much harder 😭

this is AMAZING
I want to start by saying that I seriously love your art style so much?? I don´t know how to explain it but it does something to my heart and I cannot look away!! Secondly, I want to say that dear lord this HURT but I LOVED it! The choice of the song was perfect and the way that you used the scene and themselves to portray each line was simply STUNNING, you made every delivery absolutely perfect.
I feel like we as a fandom talk about many things in the story, but one of the few that are barely talked about is JC´s love for WWX, which I find a shame because I find the tragedy and falling apart of the yunmeng twin heroes to be such an important part of the story and something that was so important to themselves as well. It is almost like they were not aware of how much they loved each other, so willing to sacrifice themselves for the other. Their story is not talked about often and when it does it is usually to throws hatred at JC, stepping over his love for WWX like it never existed. SO THANK YOU!! thank you for making this and thank you for sharing it because it truthfully touched my heart in such a strong way.. thank you for bringing light into JC´s side of the story as well, I love this so much❤️
